Wanted to clear something up that wasn’t mentioned in the video. I did attempt to find some proper GPU drivers for this, however any attempt at installing them would throw the machine into a boot loop. I was skeptical on tinkering with it due to the unstable nature of the install and assumed what Nobara tossed at me with the update tool was the best I was going to get. So with that in mind and all the other issues i ran into with installing Nobara I threw in the towel and assumed that there wasn’t really much further I could do. (Dumb way of thinking) I’m not all that educated on Linux so down the line I’ll probably revisit this (with a fixed screen haha) with some of the feedback y’all left below. Cheers
These ancient legendary computers that are still lucky enough to be functional in 2024 really deserve a calm peaceful retirement of retro PC games from the PS2 era and old NES/Genesis ROMs
And then people complain that 11 makes technological garbage 🙄... Literally that laptop is from my year of birth, honestly it is surprising that it still works well and is not the ones that are unsoldered the video card
You were playing without graphics drivers on Nobrara bruh Looks like software rendering to me Latest Minecraft this can run on hardware is probably 1.16.5 as it still supports OpenGL 2, which was dropped 1.17 and onwards. Also make sure to install the correct drivers and not the latest ones
I figured something like that had to be going on. Off camera I was fishing around for drivers but at that point it seemed like anything would break the install. Full disclosure by the end I was basically at my limit with it and just figured it just wasn’t supported. I’ll try it out again sometime down the road.
It says "NV94" in the F3 menu, but in my experience software rendering would be something including llvmpipe edit: Ok no it was definitely not using the gpu
This feels like a bringus studios video but I love that. Keep up the good work and I hope you gain a larger audiance, I will watch your journey with great interest
The 8400 GS desktop graphics card was sold as late as 2015 but this laptop has the better 9800 version. The funny thing is that even my 2004 ATI card that I bought in 2017 was faster than my 8400 GS for Roblox at the time so I kept using it as my main until 2021.
Bazzite was the way to go for sure because the image that valve offers for SteamOS currently is their old SteamOS 2 version which is based on Debian 8 from 2015. You likely wouldnt be able to get steam installed or running on that thing but they are updating and releasing SteamOS 3 soon.
literally the first couple of minutes made me think this was close to a bringus studios vid. until i saw bringus studios mentioned lol. hella cool vid tho :D
What Chrome Gadget remix are you using? I would like to listen to the full music. lol Also, great video. I was using a Dell T8100 with 4GB DDR2 with Linux Mint sometime ago. It was great on ClassiCube and basic web browsing.

Thank you! Definitely inspired by his videos and it was for sure one of my favorite ones to make. Easily one of my favorite creators to really catch fire in the last year or so.
That bottom of the laptop brought me some nostalgic memories! I got a 2nd hand Asus ROG G60VX back in 2010, for 450 bucks, which at the time was a STEAL for a truly gaming capable laptop! I think it had a 2Ghz Core2, which I later upgraded to a 2.9Ghz model (remember laptops with swappable CPUs, guys?), and a GTX 260M 1GB. The subwoofer looking bit was just closed plastic mold, and the typical DIY cooling hack was to saw that biatch open and place a plastic grid on it. Worked well! The lil' lappy served me well as a school and travel/lan party tool (I got desktop PC as well), until I sold it to some Overwatch kid in 2017 for like 150 bucks.
...Oh, and I think you might've been running Linux WITHOUT any GPU drivers! Common rookie mistake really. I bet some older distro, like Linux Mint version could've worked better. It's based on Ubuntu, and it kinda got big ~2014, when the Windows XP's support ended. This sorta old hardware would be right up its alley.
Started the video putting the laptop at the bottom makes me feel sick I feel like that is to much weight to put on top of a laptop. Edit: 4:20 I guess I had a reason to feel uneasy about it. It hurts to see the damage to the screen.
Vulkan (which modern Linux uses to effectively translate DirectX works optimally with, at least minimum, Geforce 930MX i think. 1030 works well too. Below that... you can only pray OpenGL works wonders or use it just to watch downloaded movies, typing, and reading.... and oh, emulators.
my best bet would be that you had no drivers installed for your integrated graphics and was running on basic graphics cause ain't no way it can't run terraria unless it has that terrible hd graphics
Another commenter pointed out that the machine was likely rendering in software mode. Which would make perfect sense with how poor light games such as L4D2 ran. Unfortunately any driver I installed onto the machine that wasn’t through the update tool Nobara provides bricked the install and threw it into a boot loop. I’ll definitely revisit this machine in a later video with some upgraded parts (and a fixed display lol) and see if that’ll help straighten out the instabilities.
One should try: First: Doom 1. Then : Doom on skulltag. And after: GZDoom. And finally: Doom 2016. These bench marks many aspects of old and should be compatible with a modern but highly optimized game.
SteamOS 3 in my mind is one of those "wait and see" projects. It has potential to beat Windows in handheld gaming, but I'm concerned for other environments since Linux is still firmly niche.
I’ve worked with old nVidia before, and honestly? Debian Sid, run X11 and not Wayland, and install Steam on there. Problem is a Sid install is slightly more complicated, but it’ll get you a slight bit more out of your poor laptop.
KDE Plasma is quite a heavy desktop environment, you should've installed something lighter like XFCE or smth also regarding real SteamOS, pretty sure they will release SteamOS 3 soon
Hi happy new year!!! I have same problem. Steamos didnt install because no nvme. Arch works great and ubuntu too in half life 1 more than 240 fps in some places. I use windows 10 and im stressed about it. Maybe ill come back to linux. Mine is asus x501a with pentium and hd2000 gpu and samsung ssd. dont use Bazzite, this Distro will use the Privative Driver and that GPU is too old and not supported, you should use the Opensource version like Noevau or an older privative version of it. :/ Nvidia Sucks on Linux saddly
I wonder how well it could run using a pre 1.13 version of minecraft. Vulkanmod might help as well. I would also turn down the render distance to see if that helps.

your laptop was already bad when it was new ? i mean, you're running l4d2 at like 3fps It's a game from 2009, and it was already running very well back then (source engine old). Your laptop was released in 2012. So, wtf ? I had my first laptop around 2008 and i was running these games fine, i was even running crysis (in ultra low at 20fps, but still xD) And it's not even liek it seems it was cheap, it seems it was worth 1250$ o.o Are you sure you installed the drivers for your GPU or something ?
