Best Backpack Sprayer? Flowzone Tornado and typhoon 2V vs chapin 24v battery powered
Today we do review and comparison of the flowzone backpack sprayers tornado and typhoon 2v vs the chapin 24v batter powered backpack sprayer.
In the end we discover the chapin 24v battery powered backpack sprayer has a runtime of 2 hours, sprays between .12 and .2 gallons per minute. Runs between 35 and 40psi and the charge time is 4 hours It does well for the casual user. It tends to be shipped without the hoses tightened down and it has several design flaws.
Best Backpack Sprayer? Flowzone Tornado and typhoon 2V vs chapin 24v battery powered
The flowzone backpack sprayer tornado
-2 hour run time
- 2 pump speeds. Low 45psi High 60psi
- fully charges in 2.5 hours
- pump is rated for 200 hours.
Does great spraying herbicide, pesticides, water and may other liquids.
The typhoon 2v is a beast. The V stands for variable pump. Which means you can choose how much water comes through the pump.
Here are the ratings
- 3.5 hour spray time
- variable pump from .12psi to 115psi (.12 gpm to 1.12gpm)
- pump life 1000 hours
- batter charges in 1 hour
There is no comparison between the Flowzone models and Chapin. Design is superior and you can repair the backpack yourself. Flowzone allows you to order any part on the backpack.
The typhoon 2v could just be the best backpack sprayer on the market. I was able to fully customize mine and put a 1-3gpm rainhead nozzle on mine and spray just like the professionals I couldn't be happier.
This backpack can altered with a boom sprayer, rainhead, fan head, cone head. You can also customize it due to the fact it has quick connects. Weather your spraying pest control, herbicide, non selective herbicides like glyphosate or roundup, or water you'll be happy.

Pest and Lawn Ginja thank you for this
What kind of grass is on that lawn
Kentucky Bluegrass
You're welcome Ralph
Could this tip replace the ortho hose end sprayer? I know the ortho does 2+ GPM but math is our friend. I'm just sick of dragging 500ft of hose around my one outside spigot house for 7k sqft yard.
I use my flow zone v2 for commercial pest control, I consider it my most essential tool, even over my B&G, with its low psi setting I can even use it indoors and cover my entry points, get around large buildings quickly, with out dealing with a long hose and with out straining my body during every single treatment.
The only problem I had so far was the battery showed me full power when in fact it was dead, the trick is to push the button on the battery a few time’s back to back and the second or third time it’ll show the power level indicator bars drop to the actual battery level.
great feedback! I too have had the battery indicator issues with multiple sprayers.
I think you sold me on a Flowzone Tornado. Was looking at an affordable battery powered one but wasn't liking the reviews on the low end Chapins that were in my price range. I like that the FZ is serviceable enough to be able to replace individual parts if need be.
It's a game changer Nick. Part breaks and you can fix it. simple as that. Want to upgrade the wand, you can!
It's impossible to use a pump sprayer while supporting a beer so I switched to a Strom electric sprayer and life is good.
Good call 👊😂
Where can I purchase the nozzle from or do you know what parts they use..
It's in the description of the video
What website did you order your flow zone from? Thanks
its in the description of the video. amazon is cheapest right now.
"Oh I'm sorry did my pin get in the way of your ass? Lose 5 lbs right now!"
👊😂 YES hahaha
My only issue is how can you train me if you didn’t send me one to train on🤷🏼♂️
You make a great point! 😂😂😂
Great comparison, was just getting ready to purchase a Chapin, but now I have to seriously look at the $118. Flowzone
Well worth it! 2 speeds and better straps and layout
Where do you see it for $118?
An excellent video, thank you. My Chaplin died after a year, which is a great shame as I really enjoyed working with it. The design is seriously, seriously flawed. I am actually surprised that such a poor design could make it to market.
Thanks for your feedback. its a great sprayer. lots of good options out there to upgrade from the chapin
News update: Amazon doesn't have them. OUT OF STOCK. DAMN Their website is FZSPRAY.COM You have to keep reloading their page... They sell their sprayers thru their website for $25 more than Amazon when they had them, and Walmart...urgh
Sorry to hear. I posted all links in the description of the video. Deals come and go on amazon. Chances are they'll be back.
Strom is the same as flozone exactly. I love the sprayer and highly recommend it.
Very cool
I'll pass on the Flowzone sprayers. I'm not going to put faith in a company that has only been making sprayers for the last 2 years. Maybe when they get a track record for durability, I will give one a chance.
Valid point. That's why I got referrals first.
I just replaced a 4 gal backpack with the flowzone 2.5 gal. Calibrated to 1/2 gal / k² ft with the correct TeeJet nozzle, using 60 psi setting. Used it today, really pleased. Can do 5 K² ft with it and much lighter than using the 4 gal pack...
That's awesome Gordon! Way to get calibrated!
Funny, I ask the clerks in the store about which products sell and not get returned but the result is a puzzled look from them.
😂😂😂😂 happens to the best of us
Figures I bought a new Chapin two days ago. :-(. Thanks for the video
You'll do well with the chapin! Just watch my latest review
I bought the Chapin two weeks ago. Thought I was keeping up with the Ginga's. Haha
It's still a great sprayer if you treat it right! be sure to watch my updated chapin sprayer video
Great video(s)!! They have helped me out a lot.
If you ever get a chance, please do a comparison between this Flowzone Typhoon 2v and the Milwaukee sprayer. They look similar with adjustable PSI. The Milwaukee is a little more expensive but cost of ownership may be less because you can switch the tanks but use the same pump. Plus I already own a bunch of Milwaukee tools and batteries. 😉
I've had a few requests like this one. I may just bite the bullet. You guys are killing me on expenses hahaha
@@pestandlawnginja ill buy it used off you when yer done.
Mine lasted 2 months with light use. Straps became frayed and had to get a new pump. Got mine from Greentouch Industries. Same product( Strom Sprayer), good thing was they warrantied it. Love it when it works. Hope it lasts more than my Sprayers Plus Electric. Not even a season.
Great feedback Shane! Thanks for letting us know
What kind of tip do you like for spot spraying vs blanket spraying a whole area ?
I’ve seen A LOT of your videos and I think this is the most excited I’ve ever seen you 😂
I've been trying to solve this problem, using a rain head sprayer nozzle on a backpack sprayer. I just haven't come across a backpack that would put out enough psi! So stoked
"This thing just feels good in your hand" As you're pulling the sheath back from the tip....I swear you do it on purpose lol
No comment 😂😂😂😂
Or “you’re only as good as your pump”. No truer words...
@@randygreen007 😂😂😂
Thanks for the review, I just order a Typhoon v2. My elbow is going to thank me for the 1.17 acres I got to spray!
You'll love it! Way better than tennis elbow
Firstly.
only mostly
I've been using my Flowzone Typhoon for months, love that stupid thing! The issue I had to contend with was the trigger assembly getting debris in it and it wouldn't stop dripping. (Mine was a hand me down at work, god knows what the hell the previous owner used it for. Probably used it for sand blasting...)
Great feedback. I get that from any sprayer I use. The plastic wands don't always get all the crud out and the buildup kills it. sucks. #lawncarenutproblems
I just got a Strom sprayer, it's the same exact sprayer as the Tornado, but with the Typhoon wand. Absolutely love it.
That's great feedback!
Anyone fool around with the Milwaukee sprayer yet?
yes it is really expensive have some issues with pump being in the tank
I will be very soon
My 4 sons battery powered sprayer would be comparable to the flowzones and worth looking at. Been using it this year, great
That name has come up a few times! I'll have to check them out
That's what I have. Can confirm long battery life and variable speed pump allows for the 4000 sq ft load out with easy calcs. Customer service is excellent.
I'm a pressure washing guy I do soft washing roofs. My question is with I be able to connect my J Rod tips to the Flowzone sprayer? And does it work with Bleach
I've seen a few guys hookup rods and extentions to the unit. it can handle it. as for the bleach you're better off calling them direct. it's something I've never tried!
Hi, I am simply not sure any of the 'pressure washer' nozzles can give you a wide enough angle to spray efficiently. This is why there is TeeJet. There is a video of guy converting this to TeeJet nozzles. Then you will have all the flexibility you need. GPM, angle, droplet size, drift control, endless options.
It's all subjective really. For this reason I enjoy the adjustable cone nozzles. I do agree there are several nozzles that can be retro fit that work very well
Which nozzle is the best for foliar apps and which is better for soil that will fit my tornado? Or can I use the two nozzles it comes with and if so, which one for each app?
any nozzle works great for foliar herbicide apps. Its all about the calibration. If you can get 1 gpm out of the tornado my blue rainbird nozzle is awesome. If not I would focus on using the cone sprayer.
For me that special nozzle you made would be good for when I am applying those products that, as you said, needs to get to the soil level, like insecticides or those N-Ext products. Does this company make the nozzle for the general public or is just a local thing?
The nozzle I have was made my gnc, lesco misled them too with the blue head. Link in the description
Why have that custom nozzle right on the end of the pistol and not on a quick-connect wand with like a 45-degree bend right at the end of it? Seems like you’d spray yourself more with the pistol?
@@TrippKnightly Have you ever seen those lawn companies spray lawns (True Green etc.)? If so, it's the same concept. They spray side to side fairly quickly and it would be more work/difficult to do that if the nozzle is at the end of a 24" or longer wand.
3st
nothing wrong with that!
Hey pest and lawn Ginja do you over lap to your foot step when you are spraying liquid fert with weed killer ?
yes, first step off the wet edge is 4 ft and the steps after are 6ft
And wetness is the essence of beauty...
Yes it is!
Great now i gotta buy a flowzone with money i dont have.
What is this a school for ants?
Hahaha 👊😂 I feel you!
Fantastic review... so helpful. Just ordered the Typhoon!
Glad it was helpful! I love these sprayers still
Flowzone looks exactly like a strom
chris hinckle was just about to say that
Same company ? Or licensed to manufacture?
I've heard that a few times. I'm not sure if there is a direct association
@@pestandlawnginja Flow Zone says that the Strom is a Chinese copy. Call them and ask...
That thumbnail was pure perfection 😁. I was thinking about getting into liquid this is some really good info. Thanks for another awesome video Ginja!
Thanks! It was such a fun project
Where did you get the quick connect to fit the blue tip? I have the cycloneb2v. Does it have enough pressure?
@@aerator12 Someone local made it up for him, but you can probably go to a big box store and find the parts to make this tip yourself. I have a side business doing roof and exterior cleaning and i make all types of stuff like that.
Amazon doesn't have the Tornado available right now but I did feast my eyes on the Cyclone!
crazy!!!!
What about my4sons.... I just picked up this sprayer and it's the cats a$$ baby
👊😂
Do you like My4Sons? I hear they are great machine too ...but now I am in quandary about this typhoon too... shed not big enough for tons of stuff unless I put on addition???? Hmmm.
Very exciting demo. Good products are hard to find. So much easier to make the purchase if you see it I. Action and your endorsement is solid 👍🏻
Thanks! It was fun and challenging
Price??? What??? $499 on Amazon??? Too rich for this kid... If you use it 30 times a year... Ya... Then I might consider it... Once or twice does not justify this kind of expense...
good point on the usage. i love it since i use it almost daily.
I own a flowzone and love it. I heard they are made in the same factory as the stroms. At half the price. Granted they have their 100psi ones in the $200+ price range.
Few comments on that. I dont know the answer.
Awesome information! Thanks once again Ginja! You're the best!!
Thanks elaine! This was fun
Those flow zones are JUNK, just sit them out on the curb and I'll swing by and pick them up! Great review!
😂😂😂😂😂 comment of the day!
I had to read sdw comment twice!!!!! NAILED IT!!!
What about hand pump back sprayer for the home guys that only used there sprayer a couple times a year that don't want to add on another battery system?
I prefer the matabi
How often should lawns be mowed ? To what height ? Is it better to bag, or mulch ? Thanks, love the channel !
Great question. The answer is it all depends on your lawn goals. If you want to keep it short, below 2" I suggest mowing 2 to 3x per week. If you want to stay at 3" or above I recommend every 5 days. If you mow frequently mulching is recommended. If you're taking more than .25" off the top I recommend bagging.
Excellent, thanks.
Every one I look at says .43 to .67 gpm I cant find the 1gpm one. What's up
its the typhoon 2 or 2v that has those ratings.
Will it blend🤣 love it used to watch those videos back in the day! Your blender reminded me. Good review!
🤣🤣🤣 same
pretty cool with the rain nozzle but man it would suck to have to refill every 4k. skid sprayer for pro work plz.
Totally agree. Right machine for the job
How wide of a spray should you do on the flowzone with your blue attachment form left to right. With you hand when spraying
I commonly do 6ft
Hey Ginga, compare the Milwaukee M18 back pack sprayer to o the Flowzone Typhoon back pack sprayer. Which one would you go with?
If it's in the budget to buy all the extra accessories the Milwaukee is a beast
@@pestandlawnginja I'm looking for a multi head boom spray head that could spray a wide path
The last i saw chapin made one and so did jatco
the boom that is. you could attach it to this sprayer no problem
Nice I can finally sit in bed, open the window and spray my 2 acres from bed.
Very nice!
My wife would kill me if I used our Blendtec pitcher outside. Lol
sssshhhhh don't tell on me hahaha
I need a good spray tip for a flozone storm 2.5 back pack sprayer anyone ?
great question! testing mine out too. I commonly use the cone sprayer and dial it in. has the most consistent spray out of all them the tips in my opinion. Other than that I love my jerry rigged 1gpm nozzle. doesn't do well with fiberous materials like sea kelp or humates unless they've been refined
Dang. The Typhoon is out of stock. I just left your link man. I guess so many of us are home and going lawn crazy out running the supply and demand chain with this covid19. Dang. I may get an "available" Chapin. That would be like getting my first bike and its a 600, knowing well i need a 1200 bike for this 300 lb frame.
What do you think of the Ryobi electric sprayer compared to the chapin? Let me know. Ryobi and chapin are in stock in my area (Atlanta) and I have other Ryobi tools. Thanks.
My Chapin lasted 2 hrs and then the battery wouldn’t charge.
sheesh
Can you spray bleach through the flow zone. Want to use for soft washing houses
No pump won't last and metal parts of flo zone will corrode
Will the rain head (blue nozzle) spray very far?
Not at all. About as far as you can see in the thumbnail
Looks like a nice sprayer but one question - Will it blend??
LMAO
I purchased the Cyclone 2.5. Typhoon was difficult to source. But I think the Cyclone will be a good fit for my residential needs (liquid herbicide for weed control). I have a Stihl gas powered fogger for shrub and tree plantings.
Why do you emphasize on 1 GPM so much ? is that important ?
Thats the time saver. before it was taking me 3minutes per 1000 sq ft to put down the appropriate amount of liquid. now it takes me 50 seconds because the sprayer does 1 gallon per 50 seconds. So over a 3000 sqft area, it used to take me 9 minutes and now it takes me 2min 30 seconds. for a guy that doesn't have a lot of time, or someone like me who will service 20 homes per day that time savings is huge.
Nice but I gotta go with the Chapin. It uses Black and Decker batteries, and I have a lot of B&D tools and batteries already so. $99 at Walmart...wish I could get it tool-only without the battery so it could be even cheaper! oh and lack of a back pad and strap issues both are easily fixed for cheap.
Sup brother good video keep it going
Thanks Ricky bobby!
I need a sprayer to water my garden, or some other alternative because my garden is not near a water source. Any ideas? How would a sprayer work for watering a garden?
Now that would be a battle royal in a water gun fight
he had a blast!
Hey, have you tested out the new Yard Mastery backpack sprayer?? Would love your insight on it.
I have not had the pleasure
@@pestandlawnginja
You gotta get him to send you one! It looks amazing to me. 🤩
can i use the tornado to spray sealer on brick?
it would work. you'd want to pre mix it in a seperate bucket
Hello - Thx for the great Video - I have pump sprayers now and I pump with my right hand and hold the wand with my left - I noticed on the Typhoon the hose comes out of the right side - In your opinion is there enough hose length to go around the back of the unit and spray with the wand in my left hand? - I can't find any specs on how long the spray hose is - Thx
I've done that and for me there was enough room. you can also get your own hose and modify it worst case scenario.
@@pestandlawnginja Thank you for the update
I bought the flow zone typhoon last spring. It definitely a solid machine as you say.
My problem is knowing whether or not I am getting the proper amount of herbicide down.
I'm really looking forward to your future videos.
Great feedback! It's all about knowing how to calibrate. I'll be sure to do a good video on sprayer calibration
ua-cam.com/video/98Yy6J6h7GM/v-deo.html&t=1012 I've been binging the Ginga's videos and used this one to calibrate mine. I find I still overspray because of inexperience between my pace and the overlap.
I use the same video, agree with the pace and overlap, plus I tend to hit areas a little too long. One thing that's helped me is to use some herbicides at 75% strength (particularly tenacity), it usually takes a 2nd app anyways and this way the grass doesn't turn white.
I've used other sprayers but the flow zone is almost a low psi pressure washer.
I loved it when spot spraying but need help in the blanket spraying. Looking forward to the lesson.
The rainhead nozzle is a game changer in the lawn spraying arena. It will allow me to show you guys proper technique
Ginja! Great video. I think I need a backpack sprayer now, but I have one question- is it ok to use one sprayer for all of the different uses? Like can I use it for Tenacity, Mikropak, and insect control? I assume I at least would need to rinse it out in between really well. Can you apply Tenacity and Mikropak at the same time?
The mikropak and tenacity can be applied at the same time. So much you can do with these high end sprayers. I would do the flowzone typhoon 2v or the Milwaukee. It's about time we did a followup video for you Dennis.
@@pestandlawnginja Anytime! It's looking pretty good now, the weeds are still there but they are thinning out. I'm thinking of biting the bullet and putting down some Tenacity hoping that it holds up. Everything is nice and green either way now.

Would you recommend using this blue tip to put down prodiamine wdg?
As long as you mix the prodiamine in a jar first then put it in the tank it will work great
@@pestandlawnginja thank you so much for your quick response! Greatly appreciated. is there a reason you’d mix it outside the tank instead of mixing it inside the tank? Not questioning your method just trying to learn.
Can you do a video of you actually assembling the nozzle. I tried to put the parts together but I can’t get it to spray a fan
happy to help. are you speaking of the nozzle? If so which one? The nozzle in the thumbnail is for a rainhead spray, then the nozzles that come with the unit all have different patterns, one is a cone, the other a fan.
@@pestandlawnginja Hey Ginja, I’m speaking about the blue rain head nozzle. I assembled mines but it doesn’t spray like yours so I figured let me watch you assemble your so I can do it correctly. Thanks

yes
Would you still say the Flowzones are top notch? Looking at upgrading from my crappy Greenwood pump backpack. 10k sqft lawn.
They are top notch when you get into the typhoon series. Keep in mind ALL battery operated sprayers have issues. The major issues I find is the battery indicator doesn't work and the interior filter falls off. I use a hose clamp to fix that issue.
Big differences in price between the Chapin and the Flowzone. Flowzone is 499$ Chapin less than half of it.
Field King MAX or Petra tools is a much better bargain.
flowzone comes in at $350
Sir , could bayer advanced complete insect killer for soil and turf hurt new grass?? I over seeded on 8.11.19. It’s meant for all grass. I just don’t know if it’ll hurt the newer grass.
Most likely not. I dont like to apply anything other than a fish emulsion fertilizer within the first 90 days of seeding
Flowzone! Cool!
It was a blast
How did you calculate 1.12 gpm on the 115 PSI max setting? I have a flowzone spec sheet and it says the typhoon v2's high speed is 0.634 gpm at 115psi. The sheet's high speed columns have next to it in parenthesis (dead head). Not sure what that means. Do you? Just trying to understand how I'm misinterpreting the data sheet! Awesome video. You were stoked!
I calculated the volume by using a cup and a timer. best way to do it and figure out what reality is. It legitimately pushes 1.12 gpm all day. my technicians love it because of the volume it pushes. I have no clue what dead head means LOL. you can also hack these pumps to push them even further if you wanted to. I find the 1.12 gpm is a tad fast for most people. We have 5 of them at our office and the guys absolutely love them.
Well I did a thing... I ordered the Flowzone Typhoon 2V! It was a bit pricey and I literally stared at my screen for 2 hours thinking about it. My fiancee is going to be mad when she sees it, and will ask how much I spent on it... I'll say it was on sale for only $50 dear. I used your link so hopefully it supports you! :) It's hard for me to spend that much, but I look at it this way --- if it brings you happiness/fun then buy it.. you don't work every day to look at a bank account grow and it's not like I'm buying drugs. Now if I've never put down liquid fertilizer before, is it pretty safe if I stick to a low amount? I understand doing the measurements of a product based on square footage of my lawn, but I do not really understand how you're suppose to know how much water to use? If my lawn is ~5,100 sq ft, do I mix it with 3 gallons, 4 gallons etc.?
I mix a minimum 1 gallon of water per 1000 sq ft. 2 gallons if you wanted to be super safe. it's a great product.
Ok, what one of the 2 would you recommend for about a 3000 sq.ft. Single Residential use? The typhoon 2V variable or cyclone 2V variable.
Both great choices. The typhoon will let you spray at 1gpm and for me I prefer the time savings and the ease of calibration.

That Typhoon is an animal. Gun is built like a pressure washer. You could wash a car with that thing, literally. Cool video, thanks. 👍✌
Soo true!!!!
Will it work with an atomizer tip?
no clue! only one way to find out!
We have to be total lawn nerds to get off on backpack sprayers but who cares I love it. Ginja Jr has a great dad to learn from. I'm sold. Been eyeing and eyeing and looking and looking online for a backpack sprayer and this one sounds like it. Totally sold. Now to on to justifying in my mind to buy the thing. While I am no pro but I want it. Toys for lawn geeks. LOL Honestly, this lawn thing is really fun. It's certainly a challenge. I find myself talking to my lawn? Ok now there you go, you have everything you need, just grow. I'm not going crazy am I. LOL
I've been using it now for a week. It's still pretty cool. I can spray so fast. Makes me happy.
The Ginja boy shows up to a water gun fight with a 4 gallon backpack sprayer standing 43' away from all victims....
Hes savage 😂😂😂
i know you like the Flowzone, but i was wondering if you have ever tried the Milwaukee? I am in the market for a sprayer, and i'm already vested in the Milwaukee system, so tool only is cheaper. If you can get your hands on one can you do a comparison video?
Happy to do a video. I've got super limited experience with the Milwaukee unit. I've put it on but no real world experience. Conceptually it's a great idea
Awesome video! Ty! Question though, is it compatible for spraying SH (chlorine/ bleach) for soft washing a roof? I'm a pressure cleaner and am looking for a solution to soak my roofs instead of the hand pump
as long as it doesn't clump I would say yes. you may want to call the manufacturer to make sure there won't be an adverse chemical reaction to the seals.
I own a flow zone cyclone that I absolutely love! I also assembled two extra tips. A teejet 80° and a 110° flat fan tips and it is amazing for spraying my yard. Build your own tips following the article at pestgeekpodcast.com/blog/flowzone-backpack-sprayer-tip-hack-teejet/
That's a great reference! Thanks for posting
I just got my first backpack sprayer it is a Ryobi. Anxious to use it again, but I probably will not get to because it was so effective in getting the job done the first time. I also used Roundup 365 on my weeds in my driveway and there is absolutely nothing growing in my Gravel Drive
nice!!!! I'm sure you''ll find some use for it.
Ginja, the FlowZone sprayers don't have internal agitators. How would you approach spraying triclopyr ester for treating a bad case of Lespedeza with one of them? The label recommends constant agitation during application.
This might sound a little weird but I shake my back. The only backpack sprayer I've owned with an agitator was the matabi pump sprayers. pretty decent little sprayer.
For spreading herbicide, wouldn't you want finer droplets for the plant leaves to absorb quicker? I can see the bigger droplets are good for spreading fertilizer that is meant for the soil anyways.
Great observation. It all depends on the spray rate. I'm only spraying at 1gal per minute per 1000ft2. There is truth that a finer mist would be ideal to stick better to the leaf. At the rate I'm spraying it still works great. On our professional trucks I spray at 2 gallons per minute per 1000ft2 with a similar nozzle.
You just sold me on a FlowZone. Spent all morning reading crappy reviews on the Chapin. Buy once, cry once!
You'll love it. its way better than the chapin.
WOW quality packs indeed , quality video quality calibration quality quality quality . here hereb . Where is that bell thingies I cant miss anymore of your videos . too much to learn to little time . WOW the typhoon is " Really really really ridiculously good-looking” .
LOL love the quote Erf!!! Glad to have you around
