Just got my SunJoe Dethatcher today and boy does it work great! Your videos helped make my decision to buy it. Looking forward to what it can do for my lawn.
I just got my Sunjoe Scarifier today so I immediately called off work so I could put it together and do my front and back yard both ways lolol It took me 4 hours but I kind of think I can use this for now on, instead of Aerating. It took up alot of thatch just like my old sunjoe dethatcher but this scarifier works great. I probably could of not bought a new one and just bought a scarifier blade off amazon but I was not sure if the new model scarifier blade would fit on the old model. Now I have two sun joe machines and I am completely satisfied. I fertilized afterwards with some Scotts Triple Action. My grass was already fabulous in the front yard, now thanks to this Sunjoe Scarifier It should be perfect. Thanks again.
Hello, I have a question. Is it possible to burn your grass with Scott's Triple Action. I have Kentucky Bluegrass and I scarified my grass to get out thatch then I cut it very low. It currently is not burnt, however it looks a lot less green and I cannot determine if it is from fertilizer or grass being cut so low or the reason snow Cleveland just got ? Also if it’s burnt but not dead what can I do to get Kentucky bluegrass back the way it was.
there is always a chance for fertilizer or weed killer burn. I find if you use more than 1.25lbs of N per 1000 sq ft it leave s you susceptible for a burning
Pest and Lawn Ginja thanks, some days went by since I sent you that question, the grass just looked real bad from the beating it took when scarified my lawn, looks like it’s own the come back now 😂😂
Hey man, thank you for sharing your knowledge through these videos. My SunJoe arrived from Amazon today so once the rain moves out (Seattle area) gonna give it a go even though I'm about a month behind. Glad it performed well for you in this test. I figure if I can get two seasons out of the SunJoe it'll pay for itself instead or renting a heavy power rake. Dug the saw action too, way to be resourceful!
when manually thatch raking, I sometimes wet the lawn briefly to make the thatch sticky. it causes the smaller, looser pieces of dead grass to clump with the other thatch better and I get more up per pass.
I have a Sun Joe Scarifier now for 3 years and paid only 98 dollars for a new one on ebay and love it. My yard is small so it works great for me. You just want to make sure you have the right cord I think mine is 12 ga.Great video.
:) Ok, I pretty much lost it at 3:18 of this vid.....It was the Mountain Background!!!! Wow, it's amazing to consider that a neighborhood exists with such a beautiful view. Now (back to the Pest and Lawn Care info :). Thanks so much for this, very clear, concise and informative. Subscribed, and not just because of the lovely Mountain View :)
Purchased the Sun Joe through your Amazon affiliate link. Thanks for your mini-review - it convinced me to get one. Greenworks dethatcher won't be available until late August of this year according to the manufacturer, so went with the Sun Joe instead. Looking forward to your full review. Thanks!
Ginja, I found a use for the Sunjoe clippings bag, well actually just the frame. Without the clippings bag, the clippings seem to bunch up inside the Sunjoe until there is enough to overcome the flap spring, then it pushes out a pile, closes and starts accumulating again. This causes uneven contact with the lawn. I took the clippings bag off the frame, put the frame on the Sunjoe and bent it down close to the ground. Now the clipping door stays open enough to allow the clippings to come out evenly and the blades maintain better contact with the lawn.
From Indiana new to caring for my yard uou are easy to follow, intelligent, and pleasing to the eye will follow your info and see what I end up with this year.... wish me luck
I just bought and used a SunJoe on my lawn. It has a mix of zoysia and other grasses. That little machine didi an amazing job. I just dropped 25 pounds of new seed in my front yard and I am anxious to ssee what this will look like in coming months. Thanks for a great video!
@@pestandlawnginja The SunJoe works very good was able to dethatch almost a 1/2 acre in 4 hours . Now all that needs done is to scarify the lawn then overseed . I like that the SunJoe is a 2 in 1 tool thanks for sharing your videos - we will definitely keep watching!
Everybody hates that bag but I actually like it, the section of my yard that I bought it for, I call the way back is actually surrounded on three sides by woods and that’s where my mulch pile is so it’s no problem to empty it on each pass yes it takes time but not all that much, love your vids bro
Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.
I purchased the Sunjoe a couple months ago & when I scarified my front lawn (~2000 sq') I filled two 85 gallon yard waste dumpsters packed full of thatch; I had it set at (0) & I need to go over the lawn again deeper & overseed as you did! I will probably use compost from the local recycling garden center because it's ~$40.00 a cubic yard. On a side note, I live in a transition zone "Kansas" & have cool & warm season grasses in the lawn, the Bermuda runners gave me a hard time in that they would wrap around the scarifier shaft. Thanks for the vid!!
I was very skeptical of the Sun joe scarifier/dethatcher when I purchased it but I couldn't believe the results, mowed it low, ran the scarifier, raked, overseeded and put some peat moss down with my Landzie peat moss spreader, Scotts starter fertilizer, watered everyday, twice a day and ten days later, beautiful full lawn!!
Haha I was literally commenting the exact same thing thinking is that even real then your comment was in the background lol would say saved me a job but I’ve wrote a lot more now...
Dude I thought everyone was bsing about the bag filling up so fast.. it's crazy how much thatch this machine gets up! Beyond pleased with this purchase.. it was my first time scarifying :)
@@pestandlawnginja Yes it is lol! I had huge clumps all over my lawn.. I can tell it has not been done since the lawn was established. I'm hoping one pass is enough (i know 2-3 is more ideal) because it is hard work and I need to overseed while it's still cool.
Sorry you had to do things the hard way but I appreciate this video. I don't have the tools yet so I have to do it the hard way. Now I see someone do it my way. Very helpful. Thank you
I have the greenworks, edition. Yes it is! If it had a battery, I would have torn all my grass out, and pissed the wife off, but the cord takes some of the fun out of it.
Really enjoy your videos, your a natural, learning alot, im a Professional handi man, know carpentry, plumbing, remodeling very well, but 45 years homeowner , same lawn, all crab grass and weeds by august.
Before using the dethatcher/scarifier machine, try spraying the underside with a Silicone spray. Thus will prevent soil and cuttings build up, making cleanup easier.
Look at him, standing there all handsome with a whole Bob Ross painting in the background. Stunning! Anyway, I'd be all for the SunJoe if it were cordless. Love from Detroit.
Oh my goodness, 7:40 that backdrop! Incredible. So I’m going to be overseeding with a mix of creeping red fescue, perennial rye and kbg up here in Ontario. What setting do you suggest the scarifier be at for that mix?
You don’t need to worry about surfactant when using Tenacity as a pre emergent. Love these videos, enjoy seeing how people in other areas manage their lawns.
When putting down either peat moss or Miracle grow with my hand I use the back of a metal rake to smooth and even out those products on the lawn when using that method you can get rid of the clumps too without having to go back over the lawn saving time in the process
Love your channel! And I'm glad someone's doing a review of these suspiciously lightweight and inexpensive tools. One quibble: based on the label for Tenacity, you should not be adding a surfactant to the tank when you intend to use it as a pre-emergent. It's supposed to go into the soil rather than sticking to the grass blades.
I was just about to post this. When you use tenacity as a pre-emergent you do not want to use a surfactant. Pre-emergent is a soil based application and post emergent is a foliar application.
Picked up the SunJoe and oh man... it revealed how bad the lawn is at my new house. If you are ever in the Denver area and you want an even bigger challenge, I have a 60 year old white dog turd. I'm trying to be patient, taking all your advice. Love the channel.
So.. the single line stich is the front of the bag. loop stiching is the back. Face the front to you pick off any small string debris from the right side. Then pull the end of the string on the right hand side. If it looks like you're undoing a slip knot then you're doing it right my friend 😂. Learned that back in highschool when I inhaled more grass then I cut if you know what I mean 😉. One of those why do feet stink and noses run conversations.
Yes, it’s important to always use the right tool for the job. When you cut along the seam of a bag, you need a rip saw. When cutting through the seam, use a crosscut saw. You’re welcome. Screwdrivers will also work, but saws are best.
Great channel! Something I find that works to get seed down to soil when overseeding.. Provided the lawn is bone dry, get a super long garden hose, install a nozzle of some kind and turn on the water to fill (and weight) the hose. Take the entire length of the filled (heavy) hose, and drag it over the lawn after you have spread the seed. It will act like a giant comb, and help the seed fall from the blades down into soil. Definitely works for seed, not sure about the peat moss (which I have also done by hand, that's a job!). Also, I have the Sunjoe, still works well on year 2. The scarifier is where it's at, mine has a power rake/tine attachment, but it's too gentle. I go 5 mins at a time, small breaks in between, never overheated for me. Cheers from Canada
I see what you're saying about the hose. sounds like that would do the trick. the tine dethatcher IMO is not a dethatcher but more of a debris comber. That's why I like it.
The last tiller I used was gas powered and many years ago↝↝>share4.photo/eCultivator?ㅊ10 I got the SMALL one (11 inch) and it is VERY powerful. It takes all my strength to keep it "on track" but I mean this in a good way. I am very pleased with how powerful it is. I am only using it to resurface my lawn and to put in a garden in the backyard. Assembly instructions were a little bit confusing, but not impossible to figure out. My main complaints are minor. I think the "power connector" is a bit loose, but I imagine this is a safety feature. The tiller "kicks" a lot, so it has the potential to "fly away" and a lose connector might aid in preventing problems. Second quibble is the "connectors" for the wheels. They are just screws, so they tend to "unscrew" after even a little bit of use and the wheels fall off. Perhaps another type of connector would be better...? Other than that, excellent quality for the price. Saved me hours of work. Thank you!
I've had the sunjoe for about 4 years. Works really well. I think the control lever in the video was not installed right because mine is not floppy like that. I agree, the small bag is dumb and have thought about trying to make a bigger one. I drilled a hole in the flap and tied some cord to the handle bar to keep it open so the clumps of debris could come out freely. When the door is down the debris tends to stay in there and build up. Mark your sprinkler heads because it will chew them up and bust the tops. After a few times using mine, I sharpened the scarifier blades with a grinder so that it could truly cut down into the ground. It will pull up so much crap, so be prepared for a lot of taking and bagging. Also live in Utah.
Love your videos. Learning a ton. Question....do you need to dethatch first before scarifying? Or can I go straight to the scarifier? In other words, which attachment would I use first?
Just bought one of these bad boys thanks to you. I have an acre but will just take my time and do sections while I attack my grubs with some nematodes.
I used to use a spade to edge my 440'+ of sidewalks! I finally bought a Polan Twist & Edge. (Broke after 2 seasons) Went back to using a spade but getting older, it's a tough job. So I went to Ace Hardware and bought me a manual edger (Truper 32100 Tru Tough Rotary Lawn Edger with Dual Wheel and Ash Handle, 48-Inch). Still a tough job but once you do it the first time it's easier each time after. My Grandfather used one and showed me how nearly 45 years ago. Very surprised and shocked to see him using shears!
@@SSArt98 manual edging is so tiresome! I used one for two years while our string edger was out of service. I recommended looking into blade edgers and not string. That might provide the durability you're looking at about 1/10 the manual labor
@@SSArt98 I also personally dislike the mud the manual rotary edger kicks up and smudges on the sidewalk. Makes the job look bad to me. Just had to add that haha
I recently stumbled across your channel and enjoy watching and trying to learn something. Watching this video i noticed my favorite mountain in the background. Love mount timp. I hope i learn enough to do a better job with my lawn
Just bought and used the Sun joe dethatcher and scarfier. It worked great the only issue I have is it spreads crab grass seeds. You might want to put down a pre-emergent prior to using it.
Thanks for this video. After watching a few of your videos I've realized that my simple approach to caring for my lawn is the reason it looks like shit every year! I need to level my lumpy lawn because my kids trip all the time, but I also need to seed, dethatch, and fertilize. In terms of sequence do you recommend mowing, then dethatch / scarify, fertilize, seed, then top dress / level? Thanks for the videos! Keep up the good work!
Exactly what I wanted to know but was afraid to ask. I thought you might say only posers and dilettantes use lawn sweepers! I have a DR pull behind (not a power one; I think it's made by Agri-Fab) lawn sweeper and I love it. I used my brand new Greenworks dethatcher (which is really a low power rake?) this afternoon and used a blower to move the dead grass. I almost abandoned the project. I did a second section this evening and used the lawn sweeper. No comparison. It's not perfect, but it gets the job done. There is no way I am blowing or hand raking the 27K square feet I'm trying to renovate on my own!
@@FrenchieFrench1555 just like the pull along dethatchers have to put weight over the wheels , and most people set them up with the bin dragging it has to be up in the air for leverage against the wheel
I'm torn. I think overall yes because you get the scarifier. This might sound dumb but I liked the upper handle better on the green works. I'll do an official review once I get a chance to use the dethatcher on the sun Joe.
I laughed this entire video. This project is probably the average homeowner’s experience that doesn’t have the right materials. Nonetheless, we just keep improvising. 😂
I'm actually at the point where I understand everything I needed to do in this video. I purchased my Sun Joe last year from your recommendation and I did a detract in the spring. So now we're at spring again, I must say I do not see the mess I had last year. This spring is too work on thickness. So I'll be using the other part, my tenacity and Jonathan Greene seed. Plus the Peet moss last year I did straw and dirt cause I started new. Our temp is in the low 60s last few days and tomorrow 80 evening in the 40 to 50 degree. Last week I did my first cut down and a good racking. So this weekend the goal is to do all this.. we shall see... Thank you again.
I have a video on the green works. the biggest difference is the sun joe sits lower and has the scarifier. I personally would wait for the sun joe to come back in stock and prices will be lower. The covid issue has caused the demand issue with 3rd party vendors.
Geez, I feel like when I got the GW dethatcher for around $80 in 2018 was a major bargain now. Wish I had the scarifier like the SJ, but not at that price!
@@pestandlawnginja i just ordered one on Amazon...129.00 or less.. is that the same model or did I get A). Wrong model. B.) A very good deal with Free shipping
My thoughts on your seed bag... 😯 I mean, how to open your bag. I deal with bags like this all the time. 1. Ignore the long, left piece you were tugging on. You'll fight with that for hours. 2. Cut the short end of string. The one on the right side with the label facing you. 3. Find the single thread and pull it. Hope this helps someone. Thanks for your videos! You really make it simple for a beginner like me.
They do! Not these brands, but I know Allett Mowers has a cartridge based system with all sorts of functions. They are based in the UK. Not sure who the competing US based company would be. Definitely some more $$$ though.
This was a very rewarding video. I thank you for your wisdom. As lawn freak myself I was having this problem and I didnt have a clue how to fix it. I neeeeed these tools.
@@pestandlawnginja done and done. I hope my lawn will bounce back. I recruited my friend to help me to rake. The leaf blower!!? what and amazing idea, made the clean up that much quicker.
come on now ...#1 mow the grass short #2 start near the house and work away from it so the extension cord stays behind you #3 use your lawn mower to pick up everything you dug out of the lawn ! the scarifier also works great to loose up you vegetable gardens soil before you plant seeds ... its one sweet machine - no need for gas or tune ups and it quickly pays for it self instead of renting one
Just found this guy. Altra shoes and the Wasatch front in the background gave away the he is from Utah. Love the video. Trying to decide if i should buy a scarifier.
They ought to make a two in one seed and moss drop spreader that is pull along that way you're not stepping on the seed and the moss clumps get broken up as it passes through a grated bottom. There would also be a paddle wheel on the moss side.
That would be cool! They have devices called slit seeders that drop the seed as you dig the rut. work very well. This device will do 80% to 90% of the commercial machines in my opion. You do have to put in more work but this is my number one pick for a home owner to have.
Great video as always. I have the Greenworks and use it for overseeding pretty much exactly as you did. I bought one of those steel mesh rollers to put the peat moss down. Does a great job and saves some peat moss. Do you think the greenworks will be O K for overseeding since it doesn't cut the soil as deeply as the scarifier?
I really like your channel, great job on the lawn. Tip "work away from the power source when using corded tools". Much less fiddling with the power cord.
@@pestandlawnginja one more thing buddy, I make it a habit whenever I dethatch a lawn I ALWAYS run the mower over the lawn to pick up more thatch, that may have been left behind.
thanks for the tips. and tips back, to open these kind bags sealed with rope, it's always single rope side and double rope side. facing the sigle rope side, tear it from the right-hand side. give a try
I just purchased the Sunjoe My grandson operated it we did D thatching both directions but we found debris causing a back up behind the shield. I took a couple of those large paper clips the squeeze ones and position them up high to force the door open a couple of inches off of the ground and it stops from clogging up behind when you’re pushing.
Great video. I have the sunjoe machine; it does what it says it will do. My only negative is the stupid electrical chord that is often a hasard that you must avoid to run on top off.
Enjoyed your videos. I purchased, and would recommend, the Honda Rototiller that has a number of alternative attachments. The Honda is expensive but for thatching is far far stronger than that weak SunJoe. The scarifier is called and aerator. It is not what it could, or should, be but it works to cut slits through the grass into the soil. What I like is the Honda is one tool that can do three or four different jobs. I have limited space in my garage. And, I really don't want a tool shed in my back yard.
Loving your videos. My lawns (in UK England) need some TLC and I'm buying a Raker/Scarifier tomorrow. We've had a few hot weeks without rain but we've got rain coming tomorrow night and then sunshine and showers for a couple of weeks so now seems like the right time. Tip: Use sun-block on your neck. Thanks me when you're older 😉

Thanks Diego. Been abusing the machine as much as possible to make sure I give it a proper review
That's great feedback!

@@dwaynewood1795 super stoked it worked out well for you. 1/2 acre in 4 hours is smokin fast. Well done.

It works so well!
I bought a sun joe because of this video and I’m amazed by how well it works.
That's awesome Jason!
From one ginja to another, I can't wait to do this to my lawn. The weeds have overtaken and I have to do something! Thanks for the video.

@@edubb2491 sweet!
You just dethatched. Why put down peat moss? It is so difficult to wet it out and is anti- microbial.
I feel that compost is overall a better choice over the peat moss. Well done. That's a lot of thatch
Thanks for the great information, gorgeous background , love the mountains. Awesome.
You're welcome P Ney! Have a great night. Thanks for commenting
Its a dark horse for sure!

@@pestandlawnginja Yes it is lol! I had huge clumps all over my lawn.. I can tell it has not been done since the lawn was established. I'm hoping one pass is enough (i know 2-3 is more ideal) because it is hard work and I need to overseed while it's still cool.
It is hard work! Just glad we got the sun Joe on our side
Start from the house and work your way away from the house, then you won't mess with running over the cord.

Just did my house, too. Solid advice. This is the way.

Thanks for the feedback Robert! Glad you're finding value!
Before using the dethatcher/scarifier machine, try spraying the underside with a Silicone spray. Thus will prevent soil and cuttings build up, making cleanup easier.
Great info . Thank you
have you tried doing that for under mower and get good results?
Yes. But keep reapplying periodically

Do the lowest setting.

You don’t need to worry about surfactant when using Tenacity as a pre emergent. Love these videos, enjoy seeing how people in other areas manage their lawns.

3:23 That view is amazing! I've never been out west :(
we are super spoiled with all the amazing mountains here.
If it's Utah, all I can say is: It's not worth it!!! :)
When putting down either peat moss or Miracle grow with my hand I use the back of a metal rake to smooth and even out those products on the lawn when using that method you can get rid of the clumps too without having to go back over the lawn saving time in the process
Great feedback! Thank you
cant you just use a drop spreader? wont this be much easier and effective
Fair assessment. Really appreciate you watching and commenting.
Hey Joshua! Thanks for the comment. Sounds like a stinky job hahaha.
So.. the single line stich is the front of the bag. loop stiching is the back.
I get lost on the bag 😂. Thanks for the education
@@pestandlawnginja same here. And anytime brother.

I have the Sunjoe and my neighbor wants to borrow it now after seeing what it did for my yard. I got it for $99.00 on Amazon 5 years ago.
Tell him to get a refurbished one for $85.
@@thecappy Nah, he's a good guy. I might do it for him when he is gone next week.
Rad! It's my single favorite device for lawn lovers to own.
Yes, it’s important to always use the right tool for the job. When you cut along the seam of a bag, you need a rip saw. When cutting through the seam, use a crosscut saw. You’re welcome. Screwdrivers will also work, but saws are best.
Love me a good saw
Thank you!
very cool
Pest and Lawn Ginja were
Daniela Zuc.
Also live in Utah.
interesting! So far I've not had any issues with sprinkler heads. great feedback!
@@pestandlawnginja Getting ready for that spring thaw Ginja?
Love your videos. Learning a ton. Question....do you need to dethatch first before scarifying? Or can I go straight to the scarifier? In other words, which attachment would I use first?
I prefer to use the dethatcher first. Gets rid of the fluffy debris. The thatch is dense and heavier.
Just bought one of these bad boys thanks to you. I have an acre but will just take my time and do sections while I attack my grubs with some nematodes.

I used to use a spade to edge my 440'+ of sidewalks! I finally bought a Polan Twist & Edge. (Broke after 2 seasons)
Went back to using a spade but getting older, it's a tough job.

Thanks and you're welcome!!! You'll do great. Just focus on one thing at a time.
I grabbed this unit based on your reviews and examples. I'm gonna give it a run this fall and over seed after scarifying. Keep it up!

I had a lawn sweeper, it never worked
@@FrenchieFrench1555 yah, i've heard that more than once. seems you have to get the really expensive ones to make a difference

Thank you for doing that review on SunJoe. I think for the money there is better value for Sun Joe over the Greenworks. 👍

So true!

I have a video on the green works. the biggest difference is the sun joe sits lower and has the scarifier. I personally would wait for the sun joe to come back in stock and prices will be lower. The covid issue has caused the demand issue with 3rd party vendors.
