For more security you can try the plates/reeds you remove in other now blank positions to see if they're a match for the key in them.
Yes I did think about that, but I don’t have enough spare reeds (or, frankly, the patience!) to get ones that fit the key. Also I’m quite aware that a determined thief will not be stopped by an extra few reeds.
