One: I would like to hang on to the security cable and keep from losing that cap. Two: Install a groove in the cap so the spring pin, it stays in position without locking so I don't have to keep opening the trunk. Three: The lock will happen when twisting the cap from outside (again without opening the boot!) COOL!!
When he puts the gas cap back on, he pulls back the pin first from inside the trunk - but do you have to? Is the pin really strong enough to stop a grown man from just twisting it off anyway? Anyone who has actually bought and installed this pin - how do you like it?
How do we reclock the gas cap so it's exactly straight? You cannot turn the filler neck to do this. The only reason I'd go for a popup cap is that all the twist ons are crooked.
Yes. The trunk lock is the true "lock" on the gas cap, since you can't access the lock mechanism for the cap without opening the trunk. That said, remote trunk releases are available, both cable and electric. Added value of electric: Most remote power door lock retromods include a remote that has a trunk release capability (explicitly) or an Aux button. CJ Pony Parts has the electric for 1967-1970 (Bill even does a video on installing this one), and cable for 1964-1966 (and 1967-1970, I believe), and Scott Drake DOES make an electric kit for 1964-1966 (but you have to look elsewhere at the moment for it, just as currently only a two button remote electric and remote door lock kit is available for the 1964- car at CJ Pony Parts... I'm sure they'll have it if people start requesting it, though). Also, in answer to the question folks seem to want to ask, YES, you can retrain your ring, but only be fabing an extra piece and it's a bit more finicky. You can relocate the pull to the left middle screw hole, but it will be offset (which is bad and good). It's bad because it means you have to come in at an angle, which means you need to fab a guide pipe; a metal straw, cut to length, passing through the body, the filler pipe flange at that hole and glued very carefully can do the job. It's good because the angle means that the retention ring is not in the way of the lock bar where it pins the gas cap, though it will still be a bit finicky. Oh, and make sure you get some grease into the guide pipe to make sure it slides nice and smoothly; the spring will keep it snug, you want it easy to pull in and out. I'd suggest people trial fit it (without reaming out the hole for the guide pipe, which is meant to simply insure that it goes in at the right angle) to see if you're satisfied by how tight it'll be to the filler pipe, as it WILL be tight going in from that side, at least on the cars I've seen (and on our '65)
This is really cool! I've got a 1968 Mustang GT/CS with the deluxe gas cap (flip-down) and I've looked all over for locking options without any luck. Do you know of a locking kit for the flip-down gas caps? Or do you have any recommendations for locking that style of cap?
Ryan Wade For the 69 flip down you can get a generic locking cap and put it behind the flip down, you just need to remove the spring loaded cap on the lid of the flip down. Should work on the 68 as well.
I think we’re safe in the knowledge most people these days wouldn’t know that’s the gas cap!!
I just found that out by watching this video, and I'm an idiot because that's my future car right there.
@Joziah Royce No one cares

"make sure the emblem is straight" - yep it isnt 😂

Wish you guys would show more of the finished product on the car and see it working
Now do I have to pop the trunk every time I get gas?
