      @@RileyHutt I became Pepe’s caretaker 11 years ago when he was found as a wild fledgling, and ever since then he has been living a very happy, carefree life. Even though he has adopted me as his surrogate bird friend, he lets me know that he is of higher rank than me by bossing me around by pecking me if I attempt to touch his stuff and my stuff too! Introducing another finch this late in his life could be hazardous considering how extremely territorial he is. • @fradsou
      @fradsou  5 років тому +3

      As you have noticed with your 2 finches, they can be very skittish. Pepe was also like that for several years. I’ve been Pepe’s caretaker for 10+ years, and so over that time he has grown accustomed to my presence and therefore not afraid of me. His behavior in the videos is actually that of his own making. I really haven’t done anything special to alter his natural wild instincts or to make him do anything special on command. When he is in his territorial mood, he won’t let me touch his stuff, which is pretty much everything in his room - lol. I do spend lots of time in his room, and so when he feels like bonding with me, he will come near me or preen and nap on me on his own accord. In general, birds have unique personalities, and so the amount of time it takes for them to not be fearful of you varies, but eventually the more time you spend with them, the more comfortable they will be around you, giving others the impression that you trained them! Best wishes to your finches in getting familiar with you over time, and thanks for watching Pepe’s video! :)

      Pepe has been living with me for 10+ years, and as you may have noticed from his videos, he is living a very happy life. Introducing another finch this late in his life could be hazardous considering how extremely territorial he is. His pecks sometimes leave a welt on me, and I can only imagine how much they would hurt another finch! I adopted him when he was found as a wild fledgling, which is why I think his wild instincts are intact, especially in regard to building several nests for his own comfort and safety even though there isn’t any kind of predatory threat in his room. I am so fortunate that he has adopted me as his surrogate bird friend, and I want to have him continue living his super happy, carefree and stress free life without any territorial disputes. Thanks for watching and loving Pepe! :))

      I’ve had Pepe for 10+ years, which is way up there in age for a zebra finch! He is set in his ways and accustomed to having his room all to himself. He is also extremely territorial, which is why I have no plans to disrupt his very happy and stress free life by introducing another finch especially at this late stage in his life. @@verona7881 I spend lots of time in Pepe’s room especially since my main computer is in it. I also do all my guitar practicing in there, plus I read books and play chess in there. Being a social bird, Pepe gets a lot of time to interact with me, which is why I think he has adopted me as his surrogate bird friend because not a day passes without him coming on me to take a nap or just preen, and also reminding me on a regular basis that he is of higher rank than me by bossing me around by pecking me if I attempt to touch his stuff and my stuff too! Pepe hasn’t exhibited any signs that are typical of lonely birds such as plucking their feathers, showing a complete lack of interest in preening, eating or building numerous nests or just being plain inactive and aloof. Instead, over the last 10+ years, as documented in his videos, Pepe has shown signs of being an extremely happy bird on a daily basis by merrily chirping his day away while building numerous nests, eating his millet seed, grit and greens, taking at least 2 baths a day and sunbathing in the direct sunlight several times a day; and of course socializing with me on a daily basis! @@Hero.S In the beginning Pepe was also very skittish! He would fly away every time I approached him, kind of like what your male finch is doing. One thing about finches is that they do have unique personalities and comfort zones as to when they will interact with you, which explains why your male and female finches are behaving differently towards you. In my case Pepe (a wild finch), it was several years before he got used to me, so much so that he is now no longer afraid of me, and interacts with me and also doesn’t hesitate to boss me around as documented in his videos. Eventually, the more time you spend with your male finch, the more comfortable he will get with your presence, to the point of not being afraid of you. Best wishes to you and your finches! :)
