Condolences to Tom Lorig's friends and family, but as another 78-year-old, I'd be willing to bet that this is some version of how he hoped he'd go. When you get to that age, you're very aware of the truth staring you in the face at the end of your life and you start to worry about becoming incapacitated. Anyone I talk to in their 70s and 80s has the same fears. No one wants to end up bedridden or vegetative - or just losing their independence. He was probably in great shape and had some more good years ahead of him, but there's always that fear - and I can promise you that we all hope that the end will be quick. And best of all, he died in a place he loved doing what he loved. Sad and stunning for those he left behind, yes, but don't we all wish we could go that way...

For sure. Go fast, go where you love, go happy. All we hope for as humans. RIP Ranger Lorig. 😢

From what I read. Yellowstone needs a human management plan, not so much a bison management plan.
Condolences to the ranger Tom Lorig's family. I'm sure he loved his job , being in such grandeur every day.

I’m saddened by the news of Ranger Lorig’s passing. Usually when we hear about a line-of-duty death in the NPS, it’s in law enforcement or search/rescue. I can’t think of another case of an interpretive ranger losing their life while working, though I’m guessing it must have happened before at some point.

Many of these tourist towns have made it impossible for workers to live within 60 miles of work. Moab, Sun Valley and Jackson Hole are just a few.

Thank you for this great update. I'm so sorry to hear of the death of this amazing park ranger who must've had stories to tell from his decades of NPS service. These rangers are so special, it's a big loss for our parks. And thanks for the unbiased reporting of the "flying flag" situation....it can be taken many ways, and honestly---who knows. It may have stemmed from a flapping flag causing a distraction from the view, rather than some other politically-based thing that we all seem to want to jump on nowadays. Well done. Oh, and the grizzly bears....wow!!! That mama has her paws full.

Stayed in Victor last Friday, Saturday and Sunday night (it was already booked before I knew of the “mudslide” that had happened Thursday. The hotel staff let me know of the detour as I had checked in…. (And said it should be open by the next day) Later that night the entire road collapsed. It took 2 hours each way to and from the Tetons national park…… I feel very bad for the locals in Victor that have to commute to Jackson. I had to deal with it for 2 days only. It’s a beautiful drive but doubled the commute time to the park.

The National Park Service (NPS) denied claims that park officials at Denali National Park ordered a construction crew to not fly the American flag over Memorial Day weekend. The claim appears to have originated from a report by Alaska Watchman, a conservative news outlet, which cited an anonymous construction worker.May 27, 2567 BE

I think you'd find most SAR personnel, who are often volunteers, would be against that. There are many debates going back at least 20 years and rescue costs. To my knowledge, some ordinary rescues like helivacs are in fact billed (often $50,000) while NH has had a system for a decade that decides if your rescue is free, or billed to you because you set yourself up for failure.
