We did this last year and it was AMAZING! So I have to share a story....My Grandfather loved the old west and dreamed of being a Cowboy. In his later years he was a modest ranch hand. We would watch old John Wayne movies together and when watching Rio Bravo we would sing a particular song from the film together. He has long since past but on our trip to Yellowstone I couldn't help but think of him and how much he would have loved it there.....especially the cook out. As my family and I were eating dinner my Grandfather drifted into my mind and started to tear up when (no joke) the Singing Cowboy started sining the song from Rio Bravo. Well....I lost it. My girls once understanding why gave me some sweet cuddles as my wife held my hand. I will never forget that experience and that wonderful place.
Thank you Mat and Cheryl for all your hard and thoughtful work. Your videos and advice made that trip one of a lifetime and we tell anyone we come across who is interested in visiting Yellowstone to check you all out first and foremost

That is such a sweet story. Thanks for sharing. I'm so glad Yellowstone was everything you hoped it would be. Hope you make it back here again.

We are so glad that we discovered your channel before we went to Yellowstone. You recommended doing this in one of your videos and we were lucky enough to have secured some spots and have done this before the flooding.
What a great experience!!! We were at Roosevelt Lodge around maybe 1pm and saw them get the food ready to bring out to the cookout.
The steak was very good as well as the coffee! It was raining lightly when we were there, so I guess our experience was slightly different than yours, but it was still a great experience.
Oh, and when we went, you can only eat at the Roosevelt Lodge if you are staying in one of their cabins.. We went hoping to have lunch but there was a sign at the door that said that at this time, they will only be welcoming diners who were staying with them at their cabins.

Thanks for the update on the Roosevelt Lodge. I'm sorry you didn't get to eat there. Sound like you got a great experience at the cookout though. Such a fun thing to do : )

Sadly, it was cancelled for this year because of the floods. I remember how excited we all were when we all made our reservations. But thanks to your video we can imagine what it would have been like. We are still going this September and will enjoy many other adventures. Thanks for all your tips.

Matt is there right now and says it's beautiful but I'm sorry the cook out won't happen this year. September should be a great time to be there

@@WereintheRockies Yes, we are very excited about our trip. We now get to stay two different places in the park since we had to cancel Gardiner.

@@WereintheRockies I checked today, and after labor day [my arrival, coincidentally, is the DAY AFTER the holiday] both the cookout and the trail ride are closed.

Planning a 2023 trip right now! Loving your guide. We have a family of 5 - is it just me or yellowstone lodging (non-camping) isn't really built for large families? Am I missing something? I do see Canyon Village has a 1 King & 1 Queen plus sleeper sofa for sleeping 6 but its also 900+ a night. Yikes! Doesn't seem like many family options which is surprising.

Thank you for purchasing our guide! Lodging for larger families can be challenging, sorry about that.

How soon do you make a reservation for this lodge? I was trying to make a reservation but seems that all dates are booked already.

That is so disappointing. Matt is in Yellowstone right now and he says it's really nice there right now. Are you going to reschedule your trip?

@@WereintheRockies Unfortunately that's not possible. Maybe next time. We were supposed to enter through rhe north eastern entrance and fokus on Lamar Valley on this trip, but now we are going to visit friends in Green River, Wy instead.
