Noticed your clock on the iMac started at 9:39am and ended at 2:05pm. Took roughly 4 and half hours to remove him from that single 6 second clip! That’s total dedication!
Miguel de Aguirre I was wondering if Mocha would work! Thanks for the tip, I’ll have to try that. For this project though i wouldn’t be able to use it though because I can’t get Mocha Track data to come back into AE no matter what I try. Even tech support couldn’t help me make it work. Hopefully the newer versions of AE have fixed it for me
You are an absolute wizard. I was always so hesitant to use Content Aware because I never believed it could tackle shots like this. But you took a pretty damn complex shot and killed it in comp. Thank you SO MUCH for this tut! Will definitely use this for reference
Haha thanks man! I appreciate that. Glad it could help you out. Wanted to make this video because I knew people would either assume it wouldn’t work on complex shots, or get frustrated when it didn’t work perfectly like they expected it too. Sometimes it just takes time learning how something works to know how to use it to your full advantage ya know
Late to the party but this video helped me a lot. I use to be afraid to touch After Effects but your video just gave me the courage and confidence to want to play around in it more.
I saw your comment about masking. If you’re still wondering this video will explain a bit of that process: ua-cam.com/video/MSPvD0vkRBM/v-deo.html Doing a precise mask is helpful, but not critical. More importantly, you need to keep as much of the original background as possible when removing in photoshop. Don’t just press content aware in Ps and call it done. If you have more of the background from another frame, use that to remove the object. If not then clone it and rebuild it very precisely, and make sure to remove areas you may have painted over the original background.
A very nice job. The only other recommendation I would suggest is pre-denoising the clip/s, then reintroducing noise or grain after the FX have been done.
Been watcNice tutorialng your vids for a good few weeks now, learning new sNice tutorialt each day. my worksoftow has improved so much since watcNice tutorialng
Thanks! Glad it helped, it was confusing for me too at first. If you really want to dive deep into reference layers check out the second part of that tutorial: ua-cam.com/video/MSPvD0vkRBM/v-deo.html
I was watching your video and went to subscribe, expecting to see at least 100K subs, then I saw you only had 397 subs! That blew my mind! You are so talented and the video was very well done! Keep up the great work and I hope to see you at 1,000 subscribers soon!
How. In. The. World!!! How is even possible you have only 191 subs?!? I land in this video and im like "Oh good, a very big AE UA-camr, maybe 500k or so..." Men, this is really high quality. That about reference frame wasn't even mentioned in other tutorials. Good luck and see you when you have a million subs
Haha yea understandable, but trust me - once you get the hang of photoshop you’ll realize how much potential it has for making your life easier, even in the video world. Might make a video about this because photoshop knowledge has really come in handy throughout the years
very nice tutorial. I had and idea though which may remove your use of the secondary tracking and null object. instead of just rotoscoping the cameraman for the content aware fill, maybe try doing the same thing to a chunk of the audience where ghosting may occur. so that ghosting can happen further out that you can remove with a mask. then rotoscope the audience's heads back in.
FANTASTIC TRICK AND TUTORIAL OVER ALL! Any way you can break down the middle part of the video from copying many refs to how to open those refs into photoshop please? I am having a hard time finding the files for my project using your same techniques. THANKS SO MUCH!!
Hey, I will try to break that down more in a future video, but just for clarity, are you referring to the part at 4:14 where I export a few more stills to help remove Jesse in photoshop?
Yes, that is correct. No need to go into detail how to remove something in photoshop. Just the creating references, how to save and use. It wasn't working for me when I was trying it, so I think I messed up somewhere along the way. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
@@CodyPyper , sadly still getting stuck. You can email me if you'd like if that makes it easier, instead of doing a whole video. I completely understand the production life and juggling time with projects.
Hi Cody Pyper, that's a really amazing tutorial. I am actually facing a problem. So, I basically want to remove a power extension from the shot but the problem is, we use smoke as its a music video. After effects can't fill the area because of changes in texture. I hope you understand my question.
Thanks! And yes I think I know what you mean, the best way to fill it will be a mix of using AE Content Aware fill, and then taking some pieces to overlay over top of where AE messed up. Either creating clones in photoshop or in AE, you'll have to manually create and track some of the fixes on there. It's really tough but short of recreating something in a 3d environment, it's the best way I know how to do it!
Thank you so much, I’m learning tNice tutorials in quarantine and you made it very simple I really appreciate it, thank you for going over every little
Damn ur good, subbed + notif bell. Crazy how the youtube algorithm only shows me hot knife videos when this is what im trying to watch. Keep it going :)
Nicely Done! Quick question f anyone knows... Can you create different more than one reference frame at different points in the timeline so if the video changes drastically, the content aware has more to work with? I have tried this but maybe I'm missing something or it's not possible. Thank you!
Thanks man! And yes you absolutely can. That’s actually the best way to do it in my opinion. Here’s another tutorial I made breaking that process down: ua-cam.com/video/MSPvD0vkRBM/v-deo.html
In addition to that tutorial here’s a quick note that helped me tremendously when I’ve worked with clips that change drastically: you may want to break it up into sections instead of doing one long fill layer. Maybe at different points where a big change happens, so the content aware fill is filling in similar data inside of each section. Does that make sense?
@@CodyPyper Of course you made a tutorial breaking down that exact thing. Ha. Thank you! Your example was the best I've seen explaining the process too.
You can do it that way if it’s a big clip, might be easier to keep it organized. But in the past I’ve kept it in the same comp and just worked left to right and changed the work area to only create the fill layer for each small section at a time
In this video I go into it a little deeper: ua-cam.com/video/MSPvD0vkRBM/v-deo.html But I have a video coming out soon that might also help clear that up!

Thank you so much
Cool, and nicely presented! However, I have footage that changes light too much, and so far photoshops content aware fill works much better. It seems AE won't check each frame. Am I missing something? [Edit]: Fixed it, reference frames did the trick. As you said :D
Thanks man! If you're having trouble, there are two newer videos I released that go into a lot more detail: ua-cam.com/video/MSPvD0vkRBM/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/efQg0RABrL8/v-deo.html If these don't help, feel free to reach out with a specific question!
Great tutorial and explanation...how long did it take for you to complete this project? How much RAM did you have installed your computer to work in After Effects in real time...or reduce quality to 1/4 or 1/8 for smooth playback?

Yea! Hope I was helpful for you, let me know if you still need me to explain step 3 further. The idea is shown at 9:41 in this tutorial: ua-cam.com/video/MSPvD0vkRBM/v-deo.html In the video I used a reference frame, but it can be done with any still frame.
