Very helpful video, thank you. Two things: after adding hydraulic fluid and raising/lowering the roof 3 times, I needed to add additional fluid. Roof works perfectly now. Second thing is the copper washer on the bolt to the reservoir - really easy to drop, be careful.
Great video. Seems so simple now. Hoping fluid id my problem. Can't believe some people are so rude to call it 'unwatchable'. Thank you for taking the time.
hkmgb22111 Thanks, given the opportunity I would have made the music softer. Changing the fluid once a year did the trick for me, until it no longer worked. I didn’t have an obvious fluid leak, but definitely a faulty seal. I tried rebuilding them with a $40 eBay kit, but that was a tedious project. I would send the hydraulics out to be rebuilt. Good luck!
Mine just started to struggle to open recently. Halted the operation and closed it. Next day there was fluid on the garage floor. Thought it was an oil leak until I checked your video. It now appears that the fluid is possibly a leak from the hydraulic system for the top. Prolly a technician repair as I feel that some tubing or seal has failed. Video has given me confidence to at least change that fluid myself. Thank you. 1999 Carrera 4S 68,500 miles Deep Blue
So simply changing the old fluid improves performance? Wow. Mine works okay right now, but it has a bit of a bounce while it's being lowered - last 10%. If I put it up and lower again, no bounce.@@ewmp3
Thanks for the video. The problem I have is that after finding a significant puddle of clear colored oil my convertible top is not moving at all from the closed position. If I could figure out how to manually put it in the service position I could trouble soot it from there. Anyone have this same issue?
What is that round stain on the top? My 996 soft top has the same mark in the same spot. At first, I thought the previous owner had left a hot cup of coffee up there, but now I'm not so sure.
That is a good question. It was like that when I purchased it and I don’t think it is the original top. I wonder if it lines up with something circular when top is down. I usually only take it out when I can have the top down, so it never really bothered me. I have a hard top for the colder months.
When you're just trying to find information to make a repair, loud/percussive music, drone shots, long interludes all make for REALLY difficult distractions. Thanks for taking the time/effort to make the video nonetheless.
mike hart I understand that the music was a bit much. It was the first video I’ve ever posted. If something on the video was obscured and you have a question about it, please let me know.
CLUB 996 I have a 1999 996 the top covery windows go down but then stops and get stuck and just click click from the relays .. wont move top beyond intial release.. I'm trying... to figure out what's going on..

Thank you for demonstration!!! Help me a lot .
Vey nice... I have a similar issue with my C2S 997 Gen 2.... Feel able to tackle now. Thanks!
I just replaced my fluid and now works perfectly!!
good vid man
i have the same problem but mine is a leak from one of the hydrolic ramps.i have to take it out and change the seals
Thanks, I hope your repair is successful.
I’m sorry, I missed the initial problem. Your narration is so useful- you must surely be masking other ambient sounds with your music.
The initial problem was that the roof would not open or close without me physically assisting it.
Sorry about the music. That is a common complaint.

Clint Hightower Thanks Clint. I have enjoyed many of your videos as well.

How'd you remove the cable from the ball pin? I can't seem to figure out the trick.
Pull it straight off

C Gavin It was my first ever UA-cam video and I’ve come to realize that music was a bit much. Sorry. I hope you’re able to repair your top.
I prefer scotch over ginger ale normally... 😜
The new fluid looks insipid and flavorless!
Thanks a lot it worked!!!!!!!!! :D (^: ( :
Music spoils this and positioning of camera in some shots obscures what you are doing .

Unwatchable music to annoying.
I’m sorry you found it unwatchable. Trust me when I tell you that it is even more unwatchable without the music.
