  • This is one of the most fascinating and detailed Near Death Experiences. Eben Alexander, MD, was an academic neurosurgeon for over 25 years, including 15 years at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital, and Harvard Medical School in Boston. In 2008, he experienced a profound Near-Death Experience (NDE) during a week-long coma from an inexplicable brain infection. This experience completely transformed his worldview. He shares it with us today and answers questions about things he saw and experienced - some of which are beyond comprehension. He is the author of the New York Times #1 bestseller Proof of Heaven, The Map of Heaven and Living in a Mindful Universe. This is episode 68 #nde #ebenalexander #neardeathexperience

    Awesome interview!!
Dr Alexander, as one of the world’s top Neuroscientists (and surgeons), cared for my brother Tony in Boston in the 90’s. My brother and our family came to know him as an unusually down to earth, humble and caring man even before the transformative NDE he’s telling of here. To the naysayers, the only thing he may be guilty of is having child like enthusiasm as he shares the details of his life altering experiences. He is an exceptional person of exceptional character. Thank you, Heather for another incredible interview 🎉!!!

I never get tired of hearing Eben's story. It's so calming and healing. I especially like that the people were dancing! That's evidence that dancing and the music Eben described are divine and very human. Eben described these souls as being between lives. Since the universe, and the worlds, are infinite, then these worlds could be compared to stages where we may play a role. We don the appropriate costumes (bodies) and fulfill whatever purpose we have.

I would love Dr Alexander to discuss his experience and the research findings of his peers with Ricky Gervais. Ricky seems staunchly wedded to the view that on the contrary, science is incontrovertible in its proof that life/consciousness ceases at death.

I so appreciate all of this! I go on nature walks often, and it is amazing, to say the least, what comes through as immediate insights into life as conveyed through feelings. Just now, I came up with a analogy to describe these conveyances.
The analogy relates to music in that, when one or more rhythms or beats are played fast enough, we experience that rhythmic information as pitch and harmony. We do not hear the underlying rhythmic information of that pitch and harmony as the discrete beats from which they are constructed. Analogously, when insights and immediate knowing are conveyed through feeling, it is that our consciousness is listening to a harmony that contains a vast amount of wisdom and pieces of awareness. The overall flow these pieces of insight and wisdom are interpreted as feelings. As with the harmony produced from the individual rhythms we hear, we cannot, very well at all, reduce the feelings to absolutely discrete insights which are conveyable with language. The awareness, as encapsulated in the feelings, stands on its own and is a BEAUTIFUL series of moments!
Thank you for having Eben on. He communicates some of the MOST important messages very well!

@@stevew1487 The concept I had used to make the analogy involves our involuntary perception of pitch and harmony as a consequence of *any* repeating pattern of rhythmic information.
"Rhythmic information" is anything that produces high and then low air pressure variations somewhere in space over some amount of time. Maybe it's an audio speaker displacing back and forth to play music, or the membrane of a drum reverberating up and down after having been struck, or human vocal chords vibrating back and forth to produce speech or to sing.
These moving parts each exert force on the nearby air and produce an extremely large number of high and then low changes in the air pressure near to the surface of their movement. Back and forth, back and forth, 100s 1,000s and 10,000s times a second (depending on the type of sounds involved). If these changing pressures of air eventually reach your ear (by propagation through the air ), and IF these changes include any *simple and repeating* pattern of pressure variation, you involuntarily interpret this repeating "rhythmic information" of the sound as being of a certain pitch or having a certain harmony (depending on the complexity of the pattern). The harmony we hear in any music in as little as even a second contains vasts amounts of rhythmic information.
This is to say that whenever you are listening to *any* music, there is a pattern of variation of air pressure that you involuntarily experience as the various harmonies and pitches within the music. We do not hear the individual high and low pressure regions of the air as they touch upon our eardrums. That is, we do not hear the raw "rhythmic information" of the music. Rather, we naturally and involuntarily interpret that rhythmic information as pitch and harmony.
My original intent in using that analogy was to draw an association of our experience of harmony as derived from the raw rhythmic information of music to our experience of feelings as derived from communications with the divine. In the case of music, we cannot and do not write down or granularize, in some other way, the raw pressure variations of air that lead to the experience of harmony. That raw rhythmic information which both describes and defines the music is encapsulated and conveyed to us as we *experience* the harmony. The experience of the harmony is where the meaning is. Likewise, a vast amount of wisdom and insight are encapsulated and conveyed to us as feelings. The feelings conveyed is where the meaning is. It is not possible to reduce these feelings to words and still retain their meaning. The experience of these feelings stand on their own.

@@shortlessonshardquestions8105 Thanks for the detailed explanation. Music is an interesting analogy because the emotion it stirs, if it's elevating music, is not only beyond words, but can mirror the harmony of our own inner being, and I think intuitive inspiration is also harmonizing in that it brings the harmony of the deeper part of ourselves of which we may not normally be aware to the surface and pushes aside the surface superficial thoughts that often have their base in disharmony.
I guess you could say music is harmony flowing from the outside in and intuition is harmony flowing from the inside out. Are you a musician?

I have concerns that some (quite a lot actually) of Dr. Eben's statements contradict biblical teachings. While I don't doubt his personal experiences, I do question his ability to interpret and make sense of them, particularly given his unorthodox meditation practices. As a result, I approach his claims with a healthy dose of skepticism.
