Raw beef laab is definitely #1 for me. My late father learned to make this from his Lao friend. Growing up, we (siblings) loved it, raw and all with sticky rice.
Sa bai dee Khao jee is a laung pabang breakfast, that my mom eats all the time with the jel bong. An yes their is a few types of jet bong also too. Great video Seo
Love this! My parents are Lao but me and my brother were born and grew up in the UK where we were bought up on this food. Makes me miss my mums food so much! I've never had or heard of Khao Jee before in the way in your video. To me Khao Jee is Lao for 'bread'
In Laos you can have it everywhere in some street stalls, but only grilled on open fire. Khao Jee has two meanings, Khao - rice / Jee - grill, and "bread". I had never seen fried ones like these. Should be Khao Jeune then...
You remind me of an Asian version of chef Alton Brown with how informative you are in the ingredients and process! I'm laotian raised by my grandmother (and my appreciation for her cooking came later in life unfortunately) so your videos help a lot in recreating her dishes. Thank you! 🙏❤
Lao food is so good!! And often healthy!! Yep sticky rice, Khaow Niao, is a staple! So good with spicy sauce too (if you don't necessarily eat fish or meat)❤❤❤
Esan Thai/Lao calls Lao food theirs because Esan is Lao root. Sorry, your Thai government don't want you to know so it isn't written in your history books because Thai government fear of retaliate.
@@gracedara8183 Hear hear! The Thaification system was an aggressive campaign in the Isaan region from the start of the 20th century. Majority of them are educated but their arrogance is what makes them backwards.
This vid brings back memories of childhood! My aunt would always make Khao Jee and Nam Khao for the Fourth of July. Family parties aren't complete without Thum Mak Hoong. My grandma makes Gaeng Nor Mai at least once a month, but I don't like bamboo shoots, so I usually don't eat it. I haven't tried Larb Diip, but it sounds interesting. Is Thom Khem similar to Gai Palo? My family is ethnically Chinese, but my parents and grandparents lived in Laos and Thailand before coming to the states, so I get my foods and cultures mixed up sometimes.
Lol I just wrote an essay explaining my ethnicity and culture in the comment section. Plus Asian American representation 🤣 Thanks for sharing! It's cool to read!
Michelle welcome to the world, I guess. There’s tons to explore and don’t be mislead by the generalisation of ‘asian’, ‘middle eastern’ or even a single term that covers an entire country. Many regions have their own unique culture and cuisines
Omg!! Love Lao food😊I'm picture of myself make a ball of khao neow in my hand and dipping in papaya salad padeak dressing on the video with you. This is #1 dish of Laos people y'all don't wanna miss😍😍😍
Lao's papaya salad are very similar to what I've ate in vietnam, but we eat them with white rice. I love Laos food more than Thai, Thai are on the sweet side, Lao's food are more flavorful and spicy.🤤🤤
when I visited Lao family in the US, they were complaining i am not Lao enough for not able to eat spicy food. and I was like, even in Laos, we don't eat that much spicy!!!!!
OMG so goooooood yummmm, I love to cook Lao food but I cant find Padaek anywhere.. I'm located in Germany and it's quite a pain to find good ingredients like this sometimes. T_T
I love every dish you brought up in the video. I only could wish that this Covid-19 thingy will be over so that I could hop in a car driving all the way from Phnom Penh to Champasak just for that Kaeng Nor Mai.

Fish+rice husk+salt leave in the clay jars to be fermented for several months, you have the same in Philippines? Amazing. Vietnamese they have fish sauce, and that is something else. The Tom Khem is not definitely of Lao origin.

Wow, I didn't realize how similar Thai and Laos cuisine is (and also the overlap in vocabulary between the two languages)!
Don't be surprised . We used to be the same country in China " Sip Song Pana "
