Do you have a particular band or song that was the soundtrack of an important time in your life, and brings that chapter back to mind whenever you hear it? Yeah, me too. ;-) Also, please check out The Junk Drawer playlist for some excerpts from my first attempt at making this video!

Weirdly enough, I have the soundtrack of the spirit animated movie from 2002 and I listened to that so much growing up so it's extremely nostalgic and makes me feel warm and at home 🏡 💿

It's remarkable that you chose this Dream Theater album, because it is in fact one that reminds me intensely of a certain time in my life: an 18-month period of long weekly commutes, a four hour trip one way, traveling from the middle of Germany to the deep south, the Black Forest. I used to start the train ride with some lighter prog, mostly Porcupine Tree, and then get into something heavier. So it often happened that the last part of the trip coincided with the final notes of this album -- I think I still know "The Count of Tuscany" inside and out. I will always remember seeing the mountains and fields in the summer, the snow-laden roofs in the small towns in the winter, while listening to that slightly mysterious story. The whole experience of working this far from my home at the time is now deeply ingrained and connected with certain albums, this definitely being one of them.

waldwuffel, thanks for sharing your memories of your long weekly commutes to the Black Forest. You’ve done a great job painting lovely images for us, and it is cool to know that there are very specific albums that provided the soundtrack of those scenic journeys. I’ve definitely never had a four-hour commute to my job, but I have to imagine that taking a train through Germany would be one of the best ways to do it! Thanks for the comment.

My earliest memories are my dad picking me up from pre-school and he would be blasting Van Halen while I'd sing along in the backseat. I started my own CD collection in middle school and it was cool to see the console in my dad's old car filled with his CDs and the new CDs I started collecting. Those will always have a special place in my heart and that's why today definitely hit hard. RIP Eddie ❤️

Peter, thanks very much for sharing your memory of you and your Dad jamming out in the car - it is a blessing to have that, I'm sure. The image of a pre-schooler singing Van Halen in the back seat puts a smile on my face.
I'm with you on the EVH news. Gutted. My first VH album was "Women and Children First", and even though all these years have passed, my mental image of Eddie has always been him as a young man in those days - fiery, energetic, dynamic, mischievous. A memory like that keeps him somewhat "immortal" in my mind, which makes the news of his passing that much harder to process.
He definitely left his mark and will be remembered.

Hi there Gaslamp. Been quite some time. Loved this video, although that's not a surprise, I love all videos music related. Being an avid vinyl collector I also love the packaging and artwork aspects of record releases. Also I'm a big Frank fan and that record was one I have thought would be a great release on vinyl. Anyway great idea for the video and glad to see more of these types of topics as content.
    All the best.

Thanks so much, David! Always great to see your name float through here. Hope you're doing well. On your comment about Yellow Shark on vinyl, I checked, and didn't realize that Yellow Shark was never released on vinyl. I would have thought otherwise. I have "Broadway the Hard Way" on vinyl, which doesn't pre-date Yellow Shark by *that* much, so I'm surprised by this. It's too bad: Given how much extra stuff they packed into the CD packaging, I'm sure the vinyl would have been superlative. Take care.

I have a whole Spotify Playlist where I add Songs that I found incidentally at night and moved me. I believe this Playlist will become a Soundtrack for a long Episode of my life. I started this Playlist 7 years ago and only the Songs that I really liked for weeks after adding them are staying on the Playlist. I'm listening this Playlist all the time.
From childhood and youth I have many Songs, too. For example one Green Day album, some Dire Straits Songs, a wild mixture of old stuff and Emo / Punk / Metal.

The first DVD I ever bought was “... Nothing Like the Sun” by Sting, partly because it was digitally recorded, mixed and distributed, and partly because the double LP fit on a single CD and was cheaper. The Soul Cages was a better album, though, in my opinion.
A lot of music of the late 80s and early 90s reminds me of college and the first few years of my first job. I listened to music a lot back then - Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Sting, Billy Joel, The Cure, R.E.M., and many Australian indie bands (I was living there at the time - no longer).

    • @GaslampASMR
      @GaslampASMR  3 роки тому

Thanks for the comment, HBJ. Your second statement implies that you listened to more music back in those days than you do now. This is also true for me. Do you ever think about why that is? I know a couple guys from work (my age) who are "all in" on music as their hobby, and always seem to be listening to and talking about music, etc, but my own listening tapered way off as I got older. Why did you slow down?

    • @HunchbackJack
      @HunchbackJack 3 роки тому

@@GaslampASMR that's a really great question, and one I've considered often. In my own case, I think there are three main factors:
      1. I moved from Australia to the US in my late 20s, and so no longer hang out with the friends I listened to music with.
      2. My wife and I share many interests, but music isn't one of them; we are from different countries/cultures, and don't share a common personal musical history.
      3. Many of the musicians I listened to during my formative years are no longer with us (or are no longer active), and I never found new bands to replace them.
How do you listen to music, these days? How do you discover new bands/songs to listen to? I'm interested to hear your take.

When you were talking about bands that you were into during a certain period of time (like the Indigo Girls), I thought of couple of bands that I was heavily into during the early 2000s. Between 2002 and 2005, I was really into a prog rock band called Spock's Beard. I was also into a family band from Ireland called The Corrs. I'm not really into either one of them now but when I do listen to SB or The Corrs now, I always think of that time period in the early 2000s. It was part of the soundtrack of that time for me. By the way, I really miss your videos. I hope you're doing well and that you'll be back soon.

Great video and reminded me of a time when I was much younger when I used to go through my Dad's CD collection and flip through the booklets. Can't think of how many of them I damaged inadvertently trying to put them back in the plastic holder properly.
Streaming is the most convenient way to do anything these days, especially when I don't drive so rely on using my phone to play all of my music. But I do miss appreciating my physical music library and the artwork that goes along with it. It's just not the same.

LOL, yes, your comment about damage is so relatable! Never had those problems with vinyl, I'll tell ya! [

I really love how deliberate you are with things you love. I don't think I've ever quite listened to music the way you do (though as a singer, I do enjoy figuring out my own harmonies to songs, so maybe it's similar).
And I saw Once on Broadway! It was lovely 🥰

Thanks Viscaria. If you’re good at figuring out those harmonies, then I’m jealous of your ear! I *love* harmony, but my ear is more strongly wired for melody. But back in the days when I had a daily commute, I would try to sing along with the harmony parts that I would hear, with very spotty results. lol
Cool that you saw the stage version of Once! I’ve always been curious how well it tracked to the movie, since the movie is so simple, from a plot and structure standpoint. It wouldn’t be hard to put the exact movie on the stage, scene-for-scene.

Growing up in the 90s and 00s, I started consuming music in a time when CDs were the primary format of music consumption. I was barely aware of any other way to listen to music. Even my concept of digital music was that it was music ripped from a CD.
I've personally never been a fan of the plastic jewel cases. They're so fragile and cheap-feeling, and I have plenty that have cracks in them or the hinges are totally broken. I did enjoy the occasional cardboard/paper CD packaging as well, and it does make them feel more like vinyl records. However my OCD never liked the fact that some CDs on the shelf were plastic and some of them were paper.
I think I recently got rid of a lot of my old CDs, or at least packed them away somewhere deep in a closet. I much prefer my vinyl collection, and I don't recall the last time I bought a CD.. I think I've only bought digital and vinyl in the last 8 years or so, except for the occasional time when I wanted to buy something at a show and they only had CDs.
My home audio setup is made up of a 90s Pioneer receiver and a more modern record player, and there are no CD players in sight. I haven't even owned a computer with a CD drive in a long time, so I have a detachable USB CD drive just on the off chance that I need to rip the music from a CD. I will say the one thing keeping compact disks alive for me is my car! It's too new to have a cassette player but too old or perhaps too much of a base model, to have an auxiliary cable. So, I'm stuck with CDs in my car at least.
Also my parents have that Pearl Jam - Vitalogy album and I always thought the packaging was pretty cool! I saw them live quite a while ago (2009 maybe?) and they definitely put on a good show, although I've never been a huge fan.

Hi there Mason! Thanks for the comment - I always appreciate your thoughtful responses here.
Your journey is very interesting. Given the era you grew up, as you mentioned, it is fascinating to me that you now split your musical time and investments between vinyl and digital. Two very different worlds, one from way before “your time” (your formative years as a music fan), and one from way after. Looks like you’ve let your enthusiasm lead you in whatever directions resonate with you the most, and didn’t limit your options. Good for you.
Agreed with you on the impression of jewel cases. Not only were the hinges a problem, but the four little tabs on the underside of the front limited how thick a booklet could be slid under them. Aside from the “hi-tech, space age” format itself (oooh, a shiny disc, read by a LASER!), everything else about the package felt “lesser than” back in the mid-80’s.
Now that you mention it, I realize that I very seldom play any of my CDs anymore either. Certainly, if I want to listen to something while I’m working at home, I’ll dial something up on Spotify real quick. If I’m not in the mood to wear the headphones, then I might throw some vinyl on and have it playing low in the background. Always dancing between convenience and nostalgia.
      Thanks again, Mason!

Eight minutes in and I have to pause the video there. I used to do the same as you did - I would sit and look at the artwork and read the liner notes while the record was playing. Great, great times.
The internet is obviously great and all that but it has killed a lot things that were great in life and for me, one of those was records and record shops. I used to spend any money I had on records and CDs and would spend ages in there just browsing. I’ve fallen into the Spotify thing now where it’s too easy to flick through the songs. I’m rambling when I should be sleeping! As you were, Gaslamp...

    • @GaslampASMR
      @GaslampASMR  3 роки тому +1

Hey BB, I think I hit on this topic a bit more in the outtake video in The Junk Drawer, but I agree - the shift from physical media to digital streaming corresponds directly to a change in all of us from "music owners" to "music listeners" (in a general sense, of course).
When you had to walk in to a music store and trade your hard-earned money for an album, you had "skin in the game". When you went to a friend's house and saw their albums, you were seeing those albums and those bands that your friend cared enough about to buy and own. That transaction was a statement of loyalty and fandom, in a sense - a statement of commitment that connected you to that artist in a small way.
We do the Spotify thing too. We have a family account and everybody in the family can listen to their favorite stuff and find new bands. It's actually a pretty powerful and compelling tool (although as a musician myself, I do think the artist compensation model could use some work). But I think it also contributes to the sense of music being somewhat "disposable" in the modern world, rather than creative work that should have intrinsic value.
Again, I'm speaking very generally here. I know some people still buy music. I even bought the latest Unleash the Archers album from Bandcamp a few weeks ago (although not in physical form), partially to support the band and partially so I could easily get MP3 files to play in my car. But there's no denying there's been a ton of change as music fans in a single lifetime. I wonder, for the kids growing up today, how different their music consumption experience might be 40 years from now.
      Thanks for the comment!

Hello again Gaslamp. I was just re-watching this video and it reminded me that I wanted to mention something in my original comment regarding the photo of Frank on the front cover of The Yellow Shark that you make note of. You mention how it always stopped you in your tacks and I have to agree. There have been some great portraits of Frank over the years as well as great shots of him with band mates on front covers.....I think of the Apostrophe cover or Joe's Garage, Sheik Yerbouti, Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar etc.....the Yellow Shark ranks right up among the best and I suppose now looking at it in retrospect it's fairly haunting and maybe it was Frank's goodbye to us all?
As you probably know it was Record Store Day this past Saturday and yes I got up at a ridiculous hour and stood in line. I picked up Zappa's You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Sampler on vinyl among a number of others. Haven't cracked the seal yet but looking forward to giving it a spin.
    Have a great day.

Hi there David, good to see you again. Yes, I do wonder if that is a "goodbye" look on The Yellow Shark cover. I listened to "Broadway the Hard Way" yesterday, and had forgotten that FZ had voter registration services set up on most of the US dates of the 1988 tour. With the 2020 election upon us, and knowing FZ's opinions on things like voter turnout, I wonder if his look in that photo is actually saying, "I've done all I can. The rest is up to you."
Listening to any of those 1988 recordings is a little bittersweet for me, because my college buddies and I all wanted to head to Chicago for one of the shows in March of that year, but the tickets were already sold out by the time we found out about the tour. There was supposed to have been a second leg of US dates after the Europe leg, but the band famously / unfortunately melted down before they occurred, and the tour was cancelled. We never had another chance to see FZ live. Have you ever seen him?
I actually forgot all about Record Store Day this year. I looked it up, and saw that the sampler you bought is a newly mastered version of the sampler for RSD2020, on heavy red/yellow vinyl!!! That's super-cool. I'll bet it looks and sounds great. I see it also includes Montana from Vol 2 (Helsinki), which is probably my favorite Zappa band lineup. Vol 2 is like "Roxy and Elsewhere" on steroids. Just fantastic.
I still remember that the wait times in between the new volumes of "You Can't Do That..." were unbearably long at the time. Of the six volumes, I'm a lot more familiar with 1 and 2, as my listening had already started to shift to other things by the time the collection finished in mid-1992. But the first two volumes were on heavy rotation for me when they came out in 1988.
Thanks for the comment, David! Always fun to chat music.

@@GaslampASMR Hello again.....been 2 years......how the hell did that happen? What a crazy time. Anyway yes that re-mastered version on yellow/red vinyl does indeed sound great.
I have wondered for years if coloured vinyl loses something in the quality but so far I haven't run into anything that I would say is lesser quality due to coloured vinyl.
Anyway I wanted to mention that I know it's been some time since you have posted any content but when I need to just chill out and relax there are a couple videos you've done that work.....of course your 2 vinyl related videos, your CD video, the radio show video with the envelope from the Security Guard listener and your Technics SL 1200 video.
I have to say 2 Septembers ago my 40 year old Rega Planar II finally conked out and I had had enough of fixing it so I ran out to a Toronto landmark Bay Bloor Radio and bought the Technics SL 1200 GR and couldn't be happier! I put a Grado Black cartridge on it and have been in heaven ever since.
What an outstanding turntable.......absolutely love it!!

I haven't spent a great deal of time with Tool, although everything I've ever heard from them has been stellar. Long ago, my brother made me a mix tape (yes, an actual tape) of some of his favorite heavy music (which he called his "Easy Listening Hits Vol 1"), and "Stinkfist" and "Eulogy" were part of that collection. Both awesome songs. I dig the somewhat eerie vibe.

Two classics. I know I didn't really talk about the Yes album since it was just a counterexample that I needed for the intro, but it was a cool "first cd" to own. The music on that album always seemed so crisp and different to me at the time, and owning it in digital clarity was icing on the cake.

@@GaslampASMR .yes it was crystal clear for sure... A completely new band a new sound with the same name. the first CD I ever got was the ryko disc of Frank Zappa we're only in it for the money. What I did not know is that while the original album was from 1967, Zappa had Chad Wackerman and Arthur Barrow completely re-record the drum and bass parts on the entire album in 1984 and so those sounds were absolutely crystal clear, and the remix of the other instruments was very good.. and with no internet, and I may be wrong but I don't remember reading the words drums and bass re-recorded in 1984 in the liner notes my 13 yr old mind was blown. I had heard Zappa was a genius and that I absolutely had to listen to him, which is why I bought this album... Never hearing any of his music, and you can imagine the mix of hearing him is a genius and was light years ahead of everyone.. my first compact disc, and not knowing that the rhythm tracks were completely re-recorded in 1984.. I literally did not know the truth until hearing the original album on UA-cam and how different they were... I encourage you to listen to a song from the original and a song from the 1984 release and put yourself in my shoes. I love your videos and you've influenced me to make my own. Would be great if you could subscribe thanks
