Great video. After watching this, I'm even more impressed by the work of Katherine Johnson and the other NASA mathematicians. The cover and paper tracing/smoothing was exceptional. Thumbs up.
Well said, Phyllis. The Saturn V, with all its height and mass and foundational strength, just to get the tiny payload at the top all the way to the moon, is an apt metaphor for the space program itself. So many unsung heroes like Johnson behind the scenes, contributing their skills and knowledge and labor, adding to the anonymous foundation that would eventually allow the astronauts to reach out and touch the moon. Every piece is important, but the ratio between the names we know and the ones we don't is still so lopsided. Johnson and her peers are heroes, just the same. Thanks for the comment!

Gaslamp ASMR I watched the whole video, and wow, what a magical book that must have been for you as a child. I had a few different space-related books as a kid - mostly similar to the solar system material in this one - but nothing so exploration-centric. This book has so much great info! Thanks again for all the work that went into this video.
Thanks Jack. Yep, lots of great info here, and it was pretty evocative for my young mind. I'm so glad that I still have it around, despite its lamentable condition. Better copies are for sale around the internet, tho!
I do have to say, I am incredibly impressed by the level of effort and detail put into this book that was meant to just be a promotional item for Gulf Oil. I haven’t heard of a company in recent years releasing a promotional book for any public event, much less one this packed with photos, illustrations, and written content that stays on topic and doesn’t obviously promote the publishing company (of course, Gulf Oil would have benefited from a sustained space program as they would likely have been one of the fuel suppliers).
Great point, and I agree. Chalk it up to the "moon mania" that held the public's attention at that time. It would have driven a lot of demand for material like this, and kudos to Gulf for taking this book in the direction it did. It certainly inspired me, and I assume many others.

Also for the life of me, I cannot find the Galaxia font. Maybe it’s called something different now. I read that it was created specifically for the book by Willian (not William) Reed, And searching that turns up nothing either. It looks very familiar like a variant of Futura, not the sleek Futura, which was actually used on the plaque that says ‘we came in peace’, but the one that looks more like this.
Hey GF, it's funny you mention this, because I searched for this font as well, as I wanted to use it in the thumbnail. The current font(s) called Gallaxia are not the same, as you found. I searched on other circular, geometric space/futuristic and 70s/retro fonts, but came up dry. It's too bad. That typeface would made a great font. Somebody should get on that!

I *love* ASMR involving books, tapping, tracing, and old tech/history/recollections/musings on the past. It also helps that your voice is incredibly relaxing and tingly. Yeah, same here. I didn't start with the Yeti, but using it with my phone saved me so much time in editing, that it has been my go-to rig for some time now. Agreed on the binaural - the Yeti's stereo mode provides enough "space" for what I've been doing. Thanks for the comment!

Watching this a second time. You should make more book videos :-) On that note, I wonder if learning wouldnt be easier with ASMR videos. I at least learnt a lot from this video and enjoyed the process.
Hello there. So glad that you enjoyed the video, and I do enjoy flipping through books, particularly ones that mean something to me. I try to be sensitive about copyright, which might be why I haven't done book videos more often. But I do find that flipping pages in a book can be alternately meditative or educational (many times both!), depending on what I'm trying to get out of the experience. Thanks for the comment.
As usual, right from the start the video is great! Reminds me of when I was really young and would pretend my favorite stuffed animal and I were in space. Thanks for bringing back some good memories.
Some of my favorite triggers here, thank you so much. I've just read "The Right Stuff" a few months ago, which of course ends before the moon landings and is mostly concerned with the personalities of early test pilots and astronauts. But it's still cool to recognize some of the program names and a few technical details. I'll properly watch this one tomorrow instead of just listening to the audio.

Agreed, Kendall. I'm in the same "easy to please" category. From a world-building perspective, S7 is one of my favorite seasons. I've been loving the jigsaw puzzle of the different planets and the time dilation relationships. And I really enjoyed the Octavia/Diyoza/Hope and Gabriel/Echo/Hope stuff this season. And no, I don't see how they'll finish everything up in a satisfying way in just a final episode. We'll see what they do. (fingers crossed)

It is true that the journey here has been small, but most would probably argue that every UA-camr has exactly the subs and the views that they deserve, based on their style and their consistency and the work they put in. I know I have many things working against me in that regard, so I try to focus on the community here, which I feel is amazing. I'm lucky that all of you are here. That said, it is interesting to observe the hand of the mysterious "UA-cam algorithm" at work. For example, the average views/week on this channel has not increased in over 3 years, since July 2017, even though the subs have increased over 6X in that same time frame. I'm an engineer, so I live in a world in which cause and effect are fairly easily understood. I don't get how those two factors can be so seemingly disconnected from each other. It is almost as if the view traffic is being "capped" by some other factor. I've thought about making a Junk Drawer video on this topic, using some graphs from SocialBlade. Might be interesting. Sadly the US will not be the first country putting a permanent base on the moon. Judging from recent efforts, it may be China. Thanks for this video. It reminds me how basic and insultingly dumbed-down scientific books directed at our youth are these days. NASA is doing a pretty good job these days reaching out to kids, though. My son got a boarding pass for the Mars mission and status updates on the Perseverance rover touching be deployed on Mars this week. He's very excited about the robotic aspect of it all.
