Fascinating watch. As time has marched on, it really shows that this man was truly the backbone, the foundation of The Black Crowes' sound. So vastly underrated as a songwriter and as a guitar player.
In the universe of all rock and blues guitarist, you're right but what is clear is how Rich was influenced by Keith Richards and the open tunings. The riffs are full and distinctive much like a notable stones song - brown sugar, all down the line, can't you hear me knocking etc....Eventually, Rich will be up there with all the greats who influence other guitarists.
A Gibson ES-345 through an Orange head and cab??? This is pretty much a dream rig. Simple, dirty enough to be mean without losing the notes, and not too much up high. It helps that RR is butter smooth.
i read Tom Petty's biography years ago, and when they asked him about open 'G' tuning, for writing songs, he replied that when you tune to open 'G', every single thing you play, Keith Richards has already BEEN there. Rich proves that this is not necessarily the case....awesome clip.
Hysterical how many otherwise outstanding bar room or amateur guitarists won't get near it! They're scared to death ! of what I don't know! fear of not knowing what to do at first?
not even close to true. Floyd has written in open G. so has led zep. so have many others. so did mick jagger(sway comes to mind). Petty did fine in standard. the rest of us should decide for ourselves.
Makes you really appreciate what Marc does. It's amazing how empty a song that Rich has as the bones, but has empty patches, and how Marc fleshes out the rest. That Sting Me lick is still one of the baddest ass riffs ever.
Every single note that pours out of that red guitar is pure rock n roll !! Really magical watching him play the Sting me riff, Rich taste and musical sensibility are the foundation of the Black Crowes.
Open G has so much been the sound i naturally love since always... first with the Stones and then with Rich. But Rich is pushing it way more far. With much more diversity. So happy he is still playing this way for everything that is coming ! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I hope you're catching them in Europe, Arnaud! We caught our first two Magpie shows of this year on July 20th and 21st. I miss the girls' lovely voices and stage presence, as well as Nico....but I gotta say, the stripped-down six-piece band is lean, mean, and nasty! In the best possible way!!!
Saw their first tour Shake your Money Maker saw him solo when Crowes were broke up and saw the 30 Anniversury reunion show for Shake Your Money Maker. I love the Black Crowes Music and love their open G tunes just like I like the Stones Open G songs.
Wish he had done Thorn in My Pride and Soul Singin. I'd like to add those to my BC list of songs. Rich Robinson is the one that got me playing open G and really getting used to it. Very soulful guitarist.
Totally agree, Lucas. Rich's soul and personality pour out through his guitar, and the result is amazing. Great player. I think Soul Singing is in open F, so Rich probably didn't want to switch out guitars!
Same here with Open G. It opens up so much more creativity because it's just difficult to hit a sour note. No matter what you play, it just seems to work. More intuitive, I guess.
Thank you Rich , Your playing has so much soul and emotion to it . I’m learning one of my favorites “ thorn in my pride “ glad your video popped up. ✌🏻
Thank You Rick Robinson for unselfishly sharing your guitar techinques Love You and Your brothers Music. Saw you guys in Flagstaff AZ Ya'll are awesome Well worth going to see again Thanks Guitar Extreme for providing this to other Guitarist beginners and profession alike. My brother and I grew up reading your Magazines
Rich I enjoyed seeing you front row at Jones Beach with The Magpie Salute. I missed seeing you this year in Hartford with the Crowes. Thanks for your time and the guitar lessons, I’ve watched it a hundred times and will at least a hundred more. Keep rocking man, you got killer riffs.
Joe Perry made me want to play. Rich Robinson showed me how. I dissected SYMM and learned every song. southern harmony, same thing. Now with Magpie, I get a kick out of the acoustic performances. His songs sing themselves.
Rich sounds so good on every amp or guitar you give him. (Even on an amp like that.) Such a great player, one of the best with his own style. The BC has been my all time favorite band but now I'm looking forward to catching a Magpie Salute show somewhere in Europe! He is a master of open G, pushing it further than good old Keef. (By the way who the f..k can push "dislike" on this???)
Andrew Pie Grande He ususally blends the EL84 sound of an Vox AC30 HW with an EL34 based Reason Amps which is hw boutique amp made in the US. Over his carreer he plays many different amps as he is a sound nerd!
Thanks Rich for the lesson - Very valuable for a TBC fan like me. The first 2 TCR albums are among absolute favs of all times. Unfortunately, I stopped following TBC with the followup "3 snakes" album. I get it, you wanna evolve and all, but drifting more towards The Dead and away from Stones vibe did not cut it for me anymore - but hey thats my problem. And please get over the dirty band issues ...
remember watching them live open up for ZZ top just before the crows got kicked off the tour by miller beer as was a miller beer sponsored tour and crows guitarist would bottle neck live with a jack Daniels bottle and that s conflicting advertisement 2 different alcohol company's crows were asked to change that or not do it they kept doing it were replaced early at start of tour i was lucky see them was a killer show
out of sheer arrogance and disdain for a musician, the world has not heard a collection of unpublished songs from one of the greatest legends of rock history alongside one of the great bands of the 1990s and 2000s.
It's called a Varitone switch, each position essentially adds a different amount of resistance to the signal giving multiple tonal options, and it'll do that on any pickup selection.
If you don’t include Marc’s parts and just let Rich’s rhythms flow the song will still sound biblical x ( Marc is a hell of guitarist tho love both of em)
Rich is the engine that drove their sound but Marc Ford was like high octane gas. Those two were probably my all time favorite rhythm and lead combo not named Bob & Jerry
Southern harmony one of the greatest albums ever.
Yessss
People don’t talk enough about Rich’s songwriting genius!! ❤
My personal favorite guitar player. “Sting me” part is so sick
Such a solid rhythm player just awesome the backbone of black crowes
Fascinating watch. As time has marched on, it really shows that this man was truly the backbone, the foundation of The Black Crowes' sound. So vastly underrated as a songwriter and as a guitar player.
So true
You're everywhere Ian lol..we clearly have good taste lol
Oh bullshit it’s one of the most accomplished and highly rated guitarist ever that’s not a complement is an ignorant comment
How the fuck do you figure underrated??? It's fuckin Rich Robinson??? What is underrated about The Black Crowes??? Are you stupid or somethin?
In the universe of all rock and blues guitarist, you're right but what is clear is how Rich was influenced by Keith Richards and the open tunings. The riffs are full and distinctive much like a notable stones song - brown sugar, all down the line, can't you hear me knocking etc....Eventually, Rich will be up there with all the greats who influence other guitarists.

He's playing through a harmonizer, possibly a detune also, I clearly hear it
Hats off to you dear brother, guitar saved my life as did music and at the age of 43 I'm learning your guitar parts and loving it.
I feel that.
good for you brother !!!!
i read Tom Petty's biography years ago, and when they asked him about open 'G' tuning, for writing songs, he replied that when you tune to open 'G', every single thing you play, Keith Richards has already BEEN there.

Ed White ironically Rich proves this is actually the case!
@@jamescassidy3995 lol indeed and it's a good thing to go where Keith has been, it's always good
Ed White couldn’t agree more
not even close to true. Floyd has written in open G. so has led zep. so have many others. so did mick jagger(sway comes to mind). Petty did fine in standard. the rest of us should decide for ourselves.
Sting me is easily a top 20 rock guitar riff. That shit stirs the soul.
Well said it's astounding how good it is.
Yep this dumb world will never accept that TBC are sooo underrated definitely one of the bests of the 90s
@@thefakengx3839 and of all time! Definitely the 90s
Top 20??! lmfao no
The intro riff took me a WHILE to figure out the timing. It’s sneaky weird until it clicks.
One of the few great glimpses of a true artist.❤
His riffs are so good!
Makes you really appreciate what Marc does. It's amazing how empty a song that Rich has as the bones, but has empty patches, and how Marc fleshes out the rest. That Sting Me lick is still one of the baddest ass riffs ever.
There so much sass and attitude in Rich Robinson’s guitar playing. I love it. Great video!
For those who love Rich’s playing this video is like the holy grail!
I concur, love his playing.
Rosetta Stone
Every single note that pours out of that red guitar is pure rock n roll !! Really magical watching him play the Sting me riff, Rich taste and musical sensibility are the foundation of the Black Crowes.
Rich’s music has been warming my soul since 89. #guitargod
He makes it look so easy. No wonder why all those Crowes songs are so great. Looking forward to the new Magpie albums & live shows!
This just shows, that Rich is the heart & soul of the Crowes!! A Talented Genius!!
Open G has so much been the sound i naturally love since always... first with the Stones and then with Rich. But Rich is pushing it way more far. With much more diversity. So happy he is still playing this way for everything that is coming ! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Saw him last night with The Magpie Salute---he killed, awesome show!
Savage guitar and sublime player. Love this guy.
Man!! Truly a guy u want to sit down and play guitar with!!
Humble Teacher
He mastered open g tuning with all those chords. He’s a great guitarist and songwriter
Man.... Sting me riff is awesome... jaw dropped
On the 8th day, God said let there be a killer riff. And ‘Sting Me’ was created. 3:10. Covid watching in Hawaii 10/15/20 😷🤙🏼
Rich Robinson has been a massive contributor to Rock n Roll with pure heart and soul - nothing but love Rich
Saw their first tour Shake your Money Maker saw him solo when Crowes were broke up and saw the 30 Anniversury reunion show for Shake Your Money Maker. I love the Black Crowes Music and love their open G tunes just like I like the Stones Open G songs.
Thanks Rich❤
Pure gold from Mr. Robinson. Every time he pass through London I keep going to his concerts.
Remember when SHMC came out , I don't think I picked up my Tele for about a year(thinking Rich stole my ideas)......That album blew me away.:-)
It holds up so well too.
I cut alot of grass to that record.....on tape!!
the guitar stylings of RR ...a rare and up close glimpse into his open G riffing!!
What an unbelievable player!
I never get tired of watching you play. Love the Black Crows! Will see you live soon!
Crowesbase is where you should look
Same here with Open G. It opens up so much more creativity because it's just difficult to hit a sour note. No matter what you play, it just seems to work. More intuitive, I guess.
Thorn he does with a capo on the 4th. Soul Singing is in open F. Two songs I love to play. Such cool licks.
Can't wait for August
Hey thanx Chief !
Love the last song Jealous again,
it's good to see you play it live,
so I can see all your work in there .. . Rock on
Been trying to figure out sting me forever, thanks Rich
A master guitar player.
Rolling Stones meets the Allman Brothers....In my top 5 BLACK CROWES BABY!
More like the Faces
So smooth my brother!

Golden!!!!!
Nice ax brother I love you went open G man sounds so good.
I love you!!! Thank you! Awesome
We need more of this... less of what we got now... more of this vibe...
Awesome always loved his tone and open tuning riffs
Brutally under rated
Brilliant!!
You've always had a great guitar tone... always
@2.45 “we can part the sea...on a good day” almost ✌🏼
Beauty ❤
Very talented
Cool tune.
Espetacular!
Joe Perry made me want to play. Rich Robinson showed me how. I dissected SYMM and learned every song. southern harmony, same thing. Now with Magpie, I get a kick out of the acoustic performances. His songs sing themselves.
Worthy!
Rich and Robin are the best. Thankful for their music!
the guitar lessons are free, annoying brother who will try to take all the credit is extra. thanks Rich!
The soul of the Crowes...
Rich sounds so good on every amp or guitar you give him. (Even on an amp like that.) Such a great player, one of the best with his own style. @ Andris Bigfoot: "who the f..k can push 'dislike' on this?"
Chris lol?
maybe :D
"Even on an amp like that" Is that a diss on Orange amps?
Nope, just a diss on certain Orange models. Dual Terror and OR50 great, TH30 and OR15 meh... Rich is a Vox guy, we all know that :)
Andrew Pie Grande He ususally blends the EL84 sound of an Vox AC30 HW with an EL34 based Reason Amps which is hw boutique amp made in the US. Over his carreer he plays many different amps as he is a sound nerd!
Danka!!!
Underrated - Joe Cool.
FANTASTIC!!! I love that song and I have the Ceaseless Sight record which RULES
Too COOL! Thanks
Awesome
Muah! Thanks for sharing xo
look at that guy omg makes it look all easy and shit like hes sitting at home jamming with his brotha
MORE!!!
This video made my day!!!
I do love a good 345
Hell yeah

I miss The Magpie Salute ... please return Rich. I’m sure u will get sick of playing jealous again in 2020
mr. personality as always
Haa
He doesn’t need to be. Honestly I think it’s cool Because his brother you can’t shut him up. He’s the perfect ying to Chris’s yang
Is that you Chris?
The modern day Jimmy page what a player
Is that the same ES he sent to StewMac not too long ago for new vintage style tuners?
I can almost guarantee it is...
No, This is a 345
what song is that at 3:24
Angel Martinez It’s “Sting Me,” from their second album “The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion.”
For.. the... wind!!!!
Marcus King could do with watching the Sting Me portion of this. :-)
BBL 😂😂😂
haha dude you are absolutely correct. Listening to As the crow flies play that song is painful
Anybody know what the chicken head knob does? Is it a pickup blender?
It's called a Varitone switch, each position essentially adds a different amount of resistance to the signal giving multiple tonal options, and it'll do that on any pickup selection.
Funny that the he plays is in open g and I just happen to be in open g playing some classic stones like brown sugar and start me up.
존나 멋지군
Wow, he didn't change his guitar once during this clip.
3:02
Sting em’ , just jab em’ mate.
6 people thought they were getting a Radiohead tutorial.
Is that Orange a or15?
A red guitar in front of the Orange amp hurts my eyes lol.
Let's get to work...
Rich ain't a virtuoso, but he has feel, soul and knack for melodies in open tunings.
