Eric, you helped me buy my first milsurp at Moss Pawn years ago. You showed me a Mosin 91/30 and I bought it for $120.00...you and Barry were there then. I still have the rifle, it shoots good and I'm keeping it

The online sellers have had a huge impact on surplus prices. I am an old timer and I remember buying mosins for $59. Sadly I remember 7.62.39 crates of ammo for $39. 😭

I believe they came with all the accessories as well, cleaning kits, oil bottles, ammo pouches, and slings. At the same time you could get crates of 8mm for $79. Seems like 100 years ago with todays prices.
I remember seeing crates of mosins sold at the gun shows for $25 per rifle. I remember seeing crates of sks's sold for $75 per rifle. Unfortunately I was too young to take advantage of that back then. I guess I should have begged my parents to get me a crate of sks's and about 5k rounds of ammo for about 20 years worth of Christmas and birthday presents.

Bought on in like 93-94 for 150.00! The tuna can ammo 40.00. Since have sold it. But you won’t see that today!

My father, being from the Ukraine, was against anything "Communist" and I never got to get an SKS or an AK, when younger, when living at home! I could kick myself for all the ones I missed and stayed away from. Purchasing and then getting rid of, after, and then the price went "up!" lol! Unbelievable...

I’ve only ever wished to be born earlier for one reason: the heyday of MilSurps. I’m 31 and got introduced to the wonderful world of cosmoline at age 12. Unfortunately that was already the time period when supplies started drying up and prices started going up.
Same dude. I'm 32 and missed on the cheap AK's since my dad wasn't into then like me. I then missed all on my own when given the opportunity at a SGL or SLR AK-74s.
There would be a hell of a lot better surplus if there wasn’t a ban on full auto...

They are no longer milsurps. They're collector's guns now and command collector prices.
Exactly this. Once you get to the point where you need to spend way more than $300 to get anything worthwhile, the hobby is over, they are now collectibles. Even in the mid 2010’s, I was able to stroll into my LGS with $200 or so and be able to walk out with a cool milsurp. Auctions these days are also terrible. VZ24’s now going for over $750? Forget about it.

No they're not. SKSes are not suddenly good rifles. They made hundreds of millions of Mosins. They are valuable because people think they're valuable. It's a bubble.

You guys nailed this one. I remember back in the late 70's into the early 80's going to a local flea market and seeing a barrel or two of milsurp rifles from around the world. They ranged from about $25-$50 if I recall. They're all long gone.
Me watching this at 21 years old being stuck with this when 10-20 years ago I could've had almost everything I wanted within a few years of collecting is very disheartening.
You guys bring back a lot of fond memories. Back in the 80's ,I was able to get Mosins for 49.99$ ,Enfields for 59.99$,and real German Mausers for 79.99$ at K-mart of all places! I cut down the stocks and free floated the barrels myself using nothing more than common hand tools and sandpaper. I'm not a collector, so I modified most of the rifles to use. I've lost track of all of the deer that I killed with mil-surp rifles. The best season that comes to mind, I got 5 in a very short time. 3 with a 8x57 mauser,1 with a Enfield 303,and 1 with a 7.62x54R Mosin. All with iron sights and watered down US made soft point ammo. Not a single deer moved out of it's tracks when I pulled the trigger. I really miss those days and wish that I had all of the guns back. I even had a real FN Hi-Power 9mm and a real Russian AK 47.Hind sight really is 20/20! Keep up the great work guys and I'll see you on the flip side 👍

We need to open up importation instead of restrictions being put on dumb parts. There are so many guns in America floating around a milsurp is the last thing a bad guy will want to go stick up a corner store.
In 2017 I bought a non-working No5, Mk1, for $250. After putting it back together correctly, checked by a gunsmith, I was offered $2,000 by a local gun shop. This is NOT for sale for a really long time.
There will be more surplus I think, but it will primarily be parts kits of whatever isn't banned from import. Bolt actions, and semi's from 50+ year ago are almost all gone.
Another point is that all modern rifles are made full auto, and until/unless the full auto ban ever gets lifted, we're not going to see surplus M16s, M4s, or surplus AKs with 922r. So all of the current military issue stuff won't be available "surplus" in the US.
That and they seem to be leaving piles of them for our enemies to enjoy.

Only rifles and machine guns, though. Pistols and Shotguns should still be good for the civilian market.
I wasnt interested in milsurp's until i got older and became more interested in firearms for their history as well as the engineering and craftsmanship behind them. They are, in some ways, more than simply a tool to perform a task. To me, they are beautiful and interesting for many reasons and I enjoy looking at them as much as I do shooting them. Unfortunately my interest in firearms evolved at a time where affording the ones ive always wanted is becoming less and less feasible. That's okay, though. In the end im thankful that I have the chance to own any firearms, especially the modern ones we have access to today.
I remember getting a 91/30 and tin of ammo for less than 2 bills. Those were the days.
In like 88 or so, You could still find M1Garand for 150-200. Then in the early 90’s find places like Dunham’s sell all kinds of rifles for under 79.99. I see it coming to an end. We will never see an M4 for sale, Since we just left a ton of surplus behind! And this flows to anything from MRE’s to helmets. Now I see hand me down type stuff once and a while. I know two in home history museums and it’s pretty cool to learn about some of these items. Today you really have to dig at flea markets and pawn shops.
There’s plenty of m4 and m16a4 surplus uppers around
I bought a Polish Wz29 rifle recently and found the first owners information in the buttplate with the sold price. $80 in 1987. If only he knew how much it was worth now…
I remember the days when mosins were $70 and crates of 880 rounds were about $60. You could get an SKS for about $150
It breaks my heart hearing how I missed the golden age of surplus. As a young collector I can tell you for sure... The price of surplus is breaking my balls man! I can't even keep up, the guns I want just keep climbing sky high. Back in the day I would of probably had them all by how much I've spent.
Brother I couldn't agree more with you. The reason why I got into surplus because they were cheap to shoot as a broke college student. If I would have gotten in the game much sooner, I would have purchased a Russian SKS, M44 and Swiss K31. At the price these rifles are currently going for, I think we are well past the golden age of surplus.

@@gizmosgadgets4146 it's only going to get worse man! I saw my first SKS at a gun show when I was 13 for like $89 mint. I bought my first SKS at 18 for $350.. still a good deal compared to today though. All the surplus I own is insane compared to when I was in middle school learning about it lol

When I was young, it was always fun to go to the various department stores, and see Tables of Milsurps of all kinds, priced from less than $10. up to maybe $20. Hundreds of them all laid out, and waiting to be bought. Then there are the Anti Tank Rifles, Mortars, etc that were on the market for incredibly low prices. (Delivered to your Door in the time before idiocy)
I believe my 03 is a bannerman. The barrel is the newest part at 1918, the receiver is 05, the bolt is something in the middle as are the sights. It’s still full of cosmoline.
Here in Canada the surplus market has been dry for years. K31 were $299 a few years ago...now people try and sell them for 1k-1500. Even 91/30's are 400+.
What year was a k31 300?

Import bans is likely what has also contributed to the issue. There are still plenty of AKs, SKS, and Mosin out there sitting in warehouses and in Russia, they are being converted in legal shotguns to sell to the civilian populace. I have heard that South Korea has a lot of old M1 Carbines gathering dust. If it weren’t for the import bans, we likely would have still had affordable milsurps.
It was on the news not so many years ago that south Korea was going to send us back almost a million m1 garands given to them by the U.S. govt. At that time a garand in really good condition was going for $800+. But then Secretary of state hildabeast blocked their return. Flooding the market with hundreds of thousands of unissued rifles still in cosmolene would've tanked the prices, and I'd have bought quite a few if they got under $400.
Yes, when Classic had a batch of ugly SKS beaters I got a couple. Cleaned just one of them and it's not pretty but the bore and action are in great condition.
Korea wanted the US to buy them for next to nothing , but you can Think Barack Obama he blocked the import.
@@gentrydebbie1040 at the time that was happening a decent garand was going for about $800, if we had been able to get that huge shipment we might have seen sub $400 garands. What a bunch of jackasses turning down a deal like that.
My first rifle was a 1927 M91/30.. Picked it up in the mid 90s for $100 at my local sporting goods store.
Guys, I remember going to shows in the late 80s, early 90s, in the "end of the Golden age" IMO, remembering when I could purchase any firearm I wanted and you could purchase WWI Springfield '06s and Mausers, numbers matching, for $200-$300! Those were the "high end" models! Also, this was right around the time I turned old enough to purchase a machine gun, but I was just 20-21 and wish I'd been able to get one, but I had friends who had 'em and we'd go shooting on 10 acres of land, legally! Then all hit!

In 1999 bought a Brit 303 for $69,
2002 bought a pristine 1904 Carl Gustav 96, matching numbers $99,
2003 91/30 $89.
That won't happen again.
Last year went to a gun show and saw two beaten up m96's....$600 each.
With my 73 year old eyes. now I've had to mount scout scopes on all of them.
I'm in Colorado. I hunt prong horn, mule deer, and elk using my reloads.
The nay sayers can pound sand.
I'll keep my mil surps...

PSL's are going for $2,500 now, mosins go for at least $350, Spam cans of 54r for $400, this market is absolutely insane.
Spam cans arent 400 dollars yet. I see them for 250 regularly. Not great, and certainly not 2010 levels, but it isnt $1 per round yet.

LET ME TELL YOU I REMEMBER THE DAYS WHEN YOU COULD GET A PHASED PLASMA RIFLE IN THE 40 WATT RANGE FOR A MERE 50 CREDITS. OF COURSE I DIDN'T BUY IT I JUST HAPPEN TO REMEMBER THE PRICE DECADES LATER.
The problem we have now with surplus is one of law, not one of supply. That's it. USG does not want a bunch of cheap guns and ammo here anymore.

I’m happy as can be with my only slurp, an 81 year old K31 with matching serial# magazine and bayonet and the added bonus ID card under the butt plate.
Man, that was the good old days...I started buying mil surp in 2003....got my m44 for $69, Yugo sks for $129, German k98 8mm for $89....a tin of 440rd x54r was $32, tin of 380 8mm was $28, 1,000rd case of wolf 7.62x39 was $75 and a 1,000rd case of 9mil was $89
I Dad took me to KMart in the early ‘70’s and I bought a 1918 Mauser 98 for $32.99. My stepson hunts with it.

I remember back in the day they had tubs on non matching bur fireable Turk Mausers for $25 a piece. Same thing with Mosins. I bought all those up and then bough tons of surplus ammo for them cheap. I had a ton of fun shooting those guns.
I started buying Milsurps in 2001 when I turned 18. I first bought a Ishapore 7.62 Enfield for 89$ it was awesome. Since then I have bought and sold several Milsurps if I find something I'm interested in and the price isn't too crazy ill buy it because milsurps are just cool.
Just around the early 2000s, I was able to get my Bro-in-law a deal on a Mauser G 98 for about $500 (almost all numbers matching) on a WWI Mauser, note the "almost all numbers matching..." with provenance...
There's the ebb and flow of things. I'm about the age of you guys (38). Milsurps then were cool because that russian sks was under 200 bucks and the basic bushmaster next to it was over 1000 dollars. Now it's almost the other way around. I'm just looking at the other side of this coin (pretty much what you stated at the 24 min mark), we may be done with the "golden age of Milsurps" but I believe we are still in the "golden age of the modern sporting rifle." Well at least until the next ban comes up.

The best way I have found is to join a local rifle range and ask the older guys if they have any surplus rifles. A lot of guys do and are willing to sell. I’ve had great success doing this.
picked up a beautiful 1940 660 Steyr made K98k, all matching serials, waffenamp pristine last week, ran me 650 for the rifle and a few boxes of ammo. the shop told me it was so cheap because a previous owner installed a Redfield peep sight on it, which really sucks because it's basically ruined an otherwise pretty perfect gun

Back in 2007 Big 5 sporting goods was selling mosins for $79.99 a piece. I begged my parents to buy one for me and hold it till I was older but they refused. Haha what could have been.
I bought 3 British Enfield Mk 4 rifles in 1981 at a Roses dept store for $69 a piece.
One was pretty worn one was un issued and the other was a number 5 jungle carbine in mint condition.
303 ammo was super cheap as well.
Interesting thing was the un issued one was packed in cosmoline then wrapped in newspaper which had a date of 1952 the year I was born. Should have never sold that one.
I am sad because I really love milsurps, but I can’t afford the new prices. Glad I have an SKS at least.
Bought a tula made 91/30 factory refurbished rifle from classic firearms for my 18th birthday a couple years ago for $279 shipped + $50 FFL transfer, love that gun even though I don't shoot it much
My first 9130 was bought from a Marine on Okinawa in l965..battlefield pickup..$20.00.
Milsurps were done 10 + years ago. You could argue even longer. I am only 48, I remember the $79.00 Mausers in the back of the gun mags when I was a kid.
I think it's good you got to spread the word on them making them more popular and preserves them longer bringing more enthusiast into the realm
I bought my 1933 Mosin 91/30 after watching your Channel years ago. I also bought lots of 440 round tins of ammo. I have modified the bolt and cleaned up the trigger. It's a sweet shooter. I'll be shooting this thing until I take a dirt nap.
Man I remember watching iv8888 as a 16/17 year old chomping at the bit to turn 18 and get a mosin, at the time they were 120 bucks for hand select, 250 for a PU model! I miss that for sure.

With the Anderson receiver, in my area it costs less then an average grocery trip to the store

When I first turned 18 I went and bought a 1942 91/30 mosin in pretty good condition for 100 bucks. Still have it and I'll never sell it. Crazy to see how the markets have changed for what was considered basically the cheapest rifle you could get.
Surplus military stores when I was a kid, you could get anything, now so called surplus is called Harbor freight

You Guys are spot on I am 64 and I think we all missed the boat on the Golden age which I think was in the 60s when the world was getting rid of there surplus Rifles and going into the Black guns and such
I can remember when a brand new F250 was $12,000. I can remember when expensive tennis shoes were $35. We also now live in an era of polymer(plastic), cheaper finish, absence of walnut...shall I go on?
The craftsmanship, detail, and history is completely worth the prices they command now. How about let's be GRATEFUL for the UA-cam channels that have grown the collectors as a whole to where we have a sizable voice? As like-minded people, we have a wealth of information readily available, there's a community of great people, and there's rarely a question you may have you can't find the answer for.

I remember just getting interested in guns around 2010. Classic Firearms website hadn't changed its design since 1998 and they had incredible pricing. I bought 3 M91/30 rifles for $80/each. Got a 880rd crate for $80 too.
Passed on the K31 and M39 that I wanted, as well as the stupid cheap Makarov (sub $200), TT33 (sub $150) and sub $300 SKS, $130 P38....I could go on.
Mil-surps are great! I still purchase them because I want them and see the value of ownership; both in enjoyment of shooting and enjoyment of collecting.
Glad I got my Gew88 with bayonet and 300 rounds of 8mm for $600 when I did. I really wanted an Ishapore or a K98 but I couldn't find an Ishapore and the K98 was $900. Beautiful rifle but just couldn't afford it. So, the reserve rifle for the former Reservist it was!

In a way the golden era is long over because all of the machine guns are in private collections. In regards to things like semi auto or bolt action we are in the tail end of the golden age of milsurp because there is still a little bit coming in but that is going to run out much sooner than we would like.
I, not long ago got a mosin. I that's like the most entry of the surplus but it's always been on my dream gun list for whatever reason.
Around 1970 the first misurp I was offered for sale was a British 303 for $35 . Later on around 1977, a guy offered me a all matching German Lugar with gold war birds on the grips. ($600) dummy me, I passed.
These things are cool. Sounds like we are about the same age and the good old days are now. I’ve been having so much fun buying guns recently.
Is it because 50 years ago militaries started to issue automatic weapons you are not allowed to have?
I think that is definitely a large part of it. Many of the MILSURPs are from previous military eras, and therefore the supply of those has dried up and there are not a lot of newer military firearms that are able to take their place.
29:10 hell yeah Swiss rifles are so great. i like the original 1889 Schmidt Rubin. the curved 2 stage triggers are amazing.
You and channels like you have made milsurp rifle prices rise but you shouldn't be blamed for that. You guys made milsurps known to the masses. Great rifles that otherwise would have sat unused.
I'm just glad we are at a time where you guys can make videos without having an ATF agent checking out/in each weapon you are going over.
The [KGB] would like that and you probably though the [KGB] ended with the end of the marketing of the [revolutionaries] as Soviets.
Golden age has been over since 2012. That's not to say that there aren't any good deals every once in awhile. But like it was? Never again...and the sooner people realize that and except that prices will always be going up, the better. The best time to buy milsurps is now. Cant buy them yesterday and can't afford them tomorrow.
I bought a Finnish M39 in 2012 for about $400 from Pat Burns. Now on Gunbroker they go for upwards of $900 or more. Bought a K31 in 2015 from Classic for $339, no telling what it costs now. The K31 has a beat up stock but the bore is pristine and the action is prime too. The K31 and the M39 are my favorite milsurps.
I was given a 1924 German mouser. Barrel looked like no rounds through it. Only the bolt was the odd serial number. I got strapped for cash and sold it. Damn.
Hi guys, back in 1990 i bought 2 1400 round crates of 8mm ammo for 90.00 a crate on strippers in bandoliers, it took 3 men to put it in my trunk, my son and i had to drag it in the house it was that heavy. sks back in the early 80s sks unissued 65.00, but now 800.00 and more wow, thanks guys great youtube channel.

I just picked up a mosin from the local gun store that is in pretty darn good shape for 250 bucks with some ammo. It is far more expensive then I had bought my first one in like 2010 for 100 bucks. Lol

Chad talking about the K98s lol. I traded a Mossberg 835 for a mismatched SKS missing a recoil spring and then traded that for a Russian captured 1943 K98 3 years back and I'll never let it go.
I asked my local pawn shop why I couldn't find any milsurp Ontario knife co. machetes and he said that the U.S Govt. is now shredding everything and selling scrap instead of selling it to civilians. He said that's why there were no machetes, no ammo cans or any other common milsurp goods that people look for. The govt. doesn't want civvies to have it, or the ability to long term store ammo.

My Grandfather Walt owned the largest privately owned sporting goods store in western Washington for its day. Failor's Sporting Goods. My childhood was spent in his store. I grew up in that store. I was there from 1979-1990. Mosin Nagant hex receivers $59.00, M91/30 $39.99, ammo cans of Russian 7.62x54r black tip and silver tip 440 count $19.99. Mauser $79.99. Grease guns $299.99, Stens $299.00. Those were the Golden years. Then Reagan ruined everything.
I bought a yugo Mauser in issues with all matching serial #’s for $320 right before covid, now the things worth almost $800
I bought one of those Finn 39's...sheer luck, I saw when they first posted the sale on those and I ordered one right then for a little over 300.00. An hour later, they were sold out...the next shipment - same thing. Posted online, sold out in an hour. They were beautiful rifles. Still have that one too.
I remember when you could get a case of 5 Mosin Nagants from AIM for like $280. Wish I would’ve bought a few cases back then 🤦♂️

The problem with using prices from “back in the day” is that inflation a B. Lee Harvey Oswald purchased his carcano for $19.95 - equivalent to about $190 today. So at-least for Carcanos, prices really haven’t changed.

Military surplus stores used to be a good place to get cheap clothes and even by the year 2003 they were selling surplus military clothing at like a 800% markup
I have my eye on a garand here locally. Hoping to snag it for under a grand. May be wishful thinking but I would love to grow my collection with one of the most iconic rifles in history. There’s a few carbines and a trench gun in the same auction too but I doubt I’ll be that lucky.

@@TheBarefootedGardener both in this auction were in great condition. The original one in a hard shell case straight from the cmp went for $1,600, and the other that was all original except for the top wooden guard it was a remake but looked damn good and still in great shape went for $1,000 even. I bidded on it a few times and should have gotten it but the tax return isn’t here yet lol! I did get an old .410 pump shotgun though very happy with that.
There’s a few other local ones coming up in the next couple months I’m sure there will be a few more. Not to mention carbines, 03s, Krags, mausers, etc… seems like a lot of personal collections are going up for bid recently. Kinda sad to see it!

Well Eric I’m 56 years old and I remember being able to go down to the drugstore or the hardware stores and see the guns in there for a couple hundred bucks and being able to buy 22 ammo like a couple of bucks it was like two dollars it’s like 50 to 100 rounds no look at the prices due to Inflation so yeah but I’m probably a good bit older than you but here in Fayette we used to have that balcony 80s we had a restaurant in the back of one of our drugstores I remember going in there and getting a burger and a soda for five bucks with fries and everything on the burger
