I love how Ian's mud test as based and eye opening as it was, completely negates every single dirt, mud, ice test taken before and since with AKs lol. I remember MAC from military arms literally dumping dirt into a mag, opened the dust cover and poured dirt into action, and loaded rounds that were sitting in dirt into a 74...and fired every round. Because ARs never shit the bed..right? Both are very reliable, and proven platforms. As is always said. AKs are dramatically more accurate than people are lead to believe. As such, my go to defensive rifle is an Hk Mr762 topped with a Vortex Razor HD-E Gen3 1-10x optic.
The AK and AR are both epic rifles! My only gripe is the GWOT trend of ever decreasing barrel length. You literally said it in video. Speed kills. The 5.56 looses its outstanding lethality very very quickly when velocity drops because it simply doesnt have the mass. With the 11 inch SBRs people are geeking out over these days, youre getting 7.62x39 muzzle velocity but with a bullet that weighs less than half! It simply makes no sense to me.

I literally started with a PSA GF3 as a first rifle ever. Months of deciding between a AK variant or a AR.
    I went with a AK
I went through the AK aftermarket parts. Always fun! I absolutely respect the AK with all my heart.
Only recently I am going through MY AR phase. And I'm also finding a special place for it in my heart. But AR's are really fun to "build" a AR from scratch which is what I've been doing from the start.

If you live in the east or south east lots of trees and hills and humidity and you leave the gun in the truck 24/7 I would trust the AK far more. That 7.62x39 round is gonna be better in the trees and even urban areas and if you had to shoot through a car door or something. Plus if it just gets forgotten about and not taken ideal care of in the humidity and stuff that AK will be better off. You just have to have a good ak to start with. I've seen MANY ARs at the range have problems (as opposed to the AKs). I know there are way more reasons and causes for the AR having trouble (a bad builder, gas system issues, different ammo/cycling issues, the losing of tiny parts in the field, improper lubrication or cleaning, etc.). AK problems seem to be relegated to VERY CHEAP companies putting out bad guns or (rarely) a very bad home build gun. Personally, i enjoy the weight, feel, and sights of the AK. It's different than the lighter AR that often is topped with some optic. Some people prefer steel frame handguns to polymer. Others prefer pump shotguns to semi-auto. The great thing about America is you can have them all.

I stood by this stance only until around the last year or two, when I looked around and started to notice that almost all the good imports were gone, and most of the American made AKs on the market are crap. I thought to myself, "The entire purpose of owning an AK is to have a stupid reliable, combat-accurate workhorse. If it's built like crap, what's the point?"
In the last year or so, I found myself spending more time steering people towards ARs and telling them all about which AKs are junk or otherwise not worth one's time than I did telling them what good AK brands are out there. The few that still exist are out of most folks' budgets.

You get an excuse to put weird anime stickers on your guns. But like the goth phase, it's usually temporary. Eventually you'll come to your senses and grow up into a sensible adult and return to the tried and true, respectable AR platform. As you age you'll look fondly at the AK youth, reminiscing on your own rebellious gun days. You'll chuckle to yourself and say "they'll grow out of it. We were all young and silly once. I know i was"

I know guys who are AK guys and literally the sight of an AR melts their soul and vice versa. I'm a hedger and I like them both a lot for widely different reasons, most of which have to do with nothing technical. I'm hoping never to be in a position to have to use either one for anything other than going to the range, getting to the mountains with my sons, and most of all having useless albeit absurdly passionate debates with other middle aged dudes that have never been in a war or had to protect anyone's life. End of the world, Book of Eli type situation, have to choose one rifle to grab, I'd be insane to choose anything but my AR for the exact reasons in this video.
Outside that, I honestly don't even know why we have the argument AK v. AR anymore. Have to choose one, go with AR, if possible to have both, you're missing out if you don't have at least one AK. When I graduated from high school in 1988 there was some legitimate parity between the two systems. Since Ivan Drago was a thing, neither the Soviets nor anyone else has really done any real innovation on the 47 or 74 platforms or ammo. Partly why I still think AKs remain cool, they're like a time capsule, have that whole Swayze/Sheen Red Dawn vibe to them.
Point about ammo is definitely true. I bought some 5.45 about 5 years back for my AK74 and I've actually watched it appreciate faster than gold past couple of years. It's a great round but it really hasn't moved along at all since 1974. I almost don't want to shoot it because I don't know when or if it will ever be available again so it will probably rot while I choose to shoot the ubiquitous 556 when I can get out and shoot a rifle. It is really a smooth shooting round in some ways better than the 556 but 545 probably going to go the way of the.30 carbine.

I'm an "AK guy", but I choose AR for self defense. I'm an "AK guy" because I just really enjoy them as designs and because they have more "soul" that the AR. Yes, the ARE is more modular, but that's a reason it's just more utilitarian and it makes each one less special. What you are saying here is like "are you really a Porsche /Ferrari guy if you commute in a benz? Of course! Because it's about what tickles your fancy, not necessarily what is the most practical. If I was in eastern Europe, I would probably choose the AK. In America, choosing the AR is a no brainer. Is the AR more accurate? Not enough to matter for my actual martial uses, but it could matter in some situations. Yes, I also prefer 5.45 over 7.67x39...but this is becoming less tolerable because of ammo cost. I am stocked up on 7n6 still, but only for so long. I hope that what is happening is people realizing that AR vs AK was a false dichotomy....it's all about AR AND AK! Yes. Yes I am an AK guy. I've mentioned many times I feel the AR has two fundamental flaws... difficulty with magazine retention when inserting a full mag on a close bolt, sometimes can be problematic; and if an AR does jam and you can't open the bolt, you can't field strip it and there is no cleaning rod to ram a stuck casing out. These are non issues with the Kalash platform. Is the AR a bit more accurate? Yes. Is it more modular? Yes. Is it more reliable? Depends on the situation. Not all of us are pouring mud into the opening on our AK's... that is not a practical test. It does prove a point, but also it is much less likely to occur than trying to insert a full AR mag on a closed bolt.
I've had multiple AR's and multiple AK's... i've had jams and issues with both of them, but I can always get an AK back up and running much faster than I can get an AR back in the game. Therefor I'll take an AK. AND lets not forget there are plenty of 5.56 AK's so don't say ammo is an issue, because I own a few 5.56 variants. And 7.62 AR's are just.... sacrilege. Silly, frankly. I too prefer the 5.45 round over all three.

Perspective from a former “AK guy”, and who would still reach for an AK before an AR in some cases:
When I was a solid “AK guy”, here’s why.
    - When I was shopping for my first military-style semiautomatic rifle (2016), like many people, I was debating between the AR in 5.56x45mm or the AK in 7.62x39mm. I polled a lot of my “gun guy” coworkers, many of whom were veterans of Afghanistan or Iraq. Almost unanimously, they recommended that if I were going to have only one such rifle, that it should be an AK. Having been on the receiving end of these weapons, their advice seemed particularly credible.
    - Anyone contemplating using such a rifle in some kind of AOLAO scenario should ask themselves, “How far am I really going to shoot?” The answer for most people - including me - is going to be 200 yards or less. This is backed up by research done by the Soviets in WW2 in which they determined that 70% of engagements in which line infantry were using their individual weapons took place within 200 meters. Engagements past 400 meters were so rare as to be statistically insignificant. The result of this research was - you guessed it - the 7.62x39mm round. It really is an excellent all around fighting round for real world conditions; it has proven itself over time. Out to 200 yards it has superior energy to common 5.56 loads (e.g., 55 and 62 grain), and for the first 100 yards it has better energy than even the best 5.56 loads (e.g., 77 grain). Unlike the lighter 5.56 loads, it isn’t easily deflected by brush and does better through obstacles like doors or walls.
    - One might say that both the AR and the AK are reliable, but the AK still has the advantage of easier maintenance. It doesn’t need to be cleaned as often and when cleaning is necessary, it is simpler, faster, easier. No teensy weensy parts to lose, no “star chamber”, and no crap all being dumped right into the action by the DI operating system.
But I did acquire an AR in 2021, and have since become, by a narrow margin, an “AR guy” anyway. What changed my mind? Two things:
    - With my 20” barrel and 77 grain IMI “Razor Core” ammo, I get the best of both worlds. I get great terminal ballistics, even better than the AK, but also light weight for the ammo, lighter recoil, and long range accuracy/effectiveness if I ever need it. The downside is the cost of that ammo, but as long as I have it on hand, the combination of that rifle and that ammo is my go to first choice if I ever have to participate in the defense of my subdivision.
    - A more general advantage of the AR is that it is easier to shoot accurately. AKs can also deliver good accuracy, but it takes more skill and practice, and it is harder to do rapidly. At least for me, I can put down a higher volume of accurate fire with my AR, and I would bet that’s true for most people due to the ergonomics involved. That’s an important advantage, arguably well worth the extra cost in ammo and more time consuming maintenance.
But just speaking for myself, if I were to exhaust my supply of 77 grain 5.56, and all I had left was 55 or 62 grain fodder for my AR, then my preferred choice would be the AK. To that extent I’m still an “AK guy”.

Always loved the AK but only ever had my Wasr-10/63. But I’ve had a very recent AK kick. Grabbed a PSA GF4, Wasr10 and saiga 7.62 hunter that I couldn’t pass up all in the past couple months. My old Wasr-10/63 was finally happy to have some friends after being surrounded in the safe by all my ar’s for so long.

Lets you know how bad your WASR 10/63 sucks comparatively to what is on the market now. Mine is the most over gassed ak I have ever shot, front sight post is driven all the way to the left and it still won't completely zero.

The gas block on my 63 is canted a little but it doesn’t effect function. Made sure the sights on mine were straight before I coughed up the dough.

Those 10/63s are the origin of why people think aks are not accurate

I have a few AKs in different calibers and a few ARs in different calibers. They're both great platforms and I enjoy shooting all of them. The rifle that's always in my 4X4 when I'm out exploring is kind of a mash up. It's an AR chambered in 7.62x39.

Well, that's your opinion. My AR-47 is light and fast. Has been 100% reliable and is plenty accurate in the ranges and situations where I would use it. I wouldn't choose it to shoot in a precision bullseye type competition. But, that's not what I built it for. In the real world, it does everything I want and does them well.

There is a 9-10" cherry tree about 12 yards before the final destination of my 100yd home range. On occasion when one of my guests ( never me!) sends a 7.62 round a foot or so to the left... let's just say that tree has been perforated a few times. Fully perforated.

I have a Zastava AK and a SKS. My rifle of choice is an AR10 in 308 or my SOCOM 16. I do have a good fighting AR15, and a longer range one too.

ended up getting AR. i looked at both, weighed the pros and cons, and by the time i had the money together, base cost ar15 was around $600, now its less. the aks i could find were over $700; they are worse now. Saving a $100-200 bucks meant i could buy ammo, mags, or other accessories. i got to bulk up before things got stupid.

I feel like the cheap ammo that is available for the ak is what makes it not reliable. With the cheap wolf ammo I noticed the primers are seated too deep in the pocket causing light primer strikes FTF

I kind of the same way. I thoroughly enjoy shooting my 5.56 ak, I enjoy shooting it more than my ar. If it comes down to it I’m grabbing my ar and I do all my serious training with my ar

I feel like this is more an argument of 7.62x39 vs 5.56x45. Not really a good argument for or against the platform. I prefer the AK platform for reliability and simplicity but i like the 5.56 cartridge for most use cases. That preference is made up of two different arguments. The platform and the cartridge you use in that platform. The platform is not specifically defined by the cartridge it was designed to use. There is a big movement in the US with 5.56 AKs because people like that combination and it’s not just because of the import issue.

There are more uses for a gun and cartridge combination than the ability to penetrate body armor.
At what distance would you consider 5.56 to be ineffective for whitetail deer ?
