How to get your dog to focus

- I really struggled with focus and engagement while trying to work with my youngest Malinois, Storm. She always seemed to be interested in everything but me! I had to figure out how to get focus and engagement from her if I was going to see any success with her training. Today I want to discuss with you 3 ways to build engagement with your dog and how to get your dog to focus on you!
After the help of many amazing trainers, both in person and online, today Storm is a completely different dog. She gives me great one-way engagement and I am continuing to build on what I am going to share with you in today's video. I hope you find it both practical and useful!

Very interesting video! I have a pitbull that I've struggled with engagement and this video nails it - she only engages with me for treats/her ball. I've always been told I don't have high enough value treats for her continued engagement or that she'll eventually associate me with the treats/ball but that doesn't seem the case. Dirt is definitely more distracting than I am ;)

I loved this video! And to find I’m doing 90% of these things right ! I have two 11 week old shepherd/husky litter mates brother & sister and they are so great BUT I can’t get them to focus on me when they are outside with each other or playing together .. if it’s one on one they are fine and respond to recall, etc.. any quick tips to help get their attention more ? They don’t really have a fave toy they are obsessed with YET 😂 they do know after training they get their chew ‘bones’ a flavored benebone ..PS so happy you came across my FYP on TikTok!

Valuable nugget information that I haven't seen explained elsewhere. I can see it now when I bring my Mal out of her crate. She is hungry for attention and that anticipation tidbit is an eye opener. We just got done with AKC Rally novice and just wondering how I can increase engagement and this pops up!

I am still working on my 7mo old mal. I got her at 5.5mo old. I recently got a crate that she FINALLY likes going into. I do feel guilty putting her right back into the crate once we are done training. You’re video makes me feel not so alone in that feeling. Thank you.
I have a Sheltie that won't do what would normally be natural for her because she knows if I have treats on me even if I load up out of her sight. She also knows that I do not carry treats in the obedience trial ring so ring attitude goes south. Very occasionally, when she thought I had a cookie on me, I got beautiful engagement but it was in a practice match ring, not the real thing, and she knew it.

How do you keep them from running away?
Definitely can see the difference in engagement between the two dogs. Does the e collar affect the engagement? Fury was wearing one so does she know e collar means training/play session? So her engagement was up. Riot didn't have one on so maybe he was just in chill out mode knowing it isn't a training session.
Fury is a fully trained protection dog. So I’m assuming it is just for both of their safety as well as training 🤷♂️
@@robward6517 riot is a protection dog and wasn't wearing an e collar. So being a protection dog has nothing to do with my question.
She just probably had it on her at the time and didn't take it off or they had a session before, so that is why she was likely crated, to "cool down"

Great video. If you make yourself into a reinforcer, how do you create an Off switch when the dog is in the house with you? Also, do your kids train also, or you need to become the only predictor of food and play?

I took my dog out to an open field with some other dogs nearby, no toys or treats, and my dog kept running back to me and playing with only me. I didn't realize all that meant. I like how I can use that as a gauge for how engaged he is with me.
Dogs smell everything even a ball in pocket
they can smell indeed but I have tricked my dog several times with hiding the ball in the pocket. I know its counterintuitive but it works. Maybe out of sight out of mind.

I see the difference in the engagement, yet I see Fury's reaction as more trying to communicate what she wants before the engagement. Is communication a different step?
I've had German Shepards before and the Belgian Malinois seems less people driven and more engagement oriented. A Belgian Malinois difference to me is a German Shepard on steroids. They are great but lots more work and while somewhat affectionate they are rougher than the german shepard. I see why they say this is not a dog for everyone. I love my Ariel yet she is rougher in her movements and moments I try to pet and love on her than any dog I've ever owned. I'm learning. Protection and Police Work is I believe their best placement.

LOL Try doing engagement with a pitbull. Really easy with a Mal, even a tough Mal. The pitbull starts at the tough Mal leve and is much much harder, but it can happen.
so I work 8-5 job and I want to have that engagement with my GSD. I taking him out to play from 5:30 am -7:10am /get home by 6pm we go out for walks and then we play/ Train.
Question: should I put him in his crate when I leave to work -and then take him out when I get out and before bed put him back?.. or that’s a lot of hours for him to spend in his crate?
A cool trick to get your dog to focus on You , is at a sit position at your side. Drop a piece of food from your mouth to his/hers. Every time you make a sound, they'll be locked on to your face /eyes.
We can get so in tune with our dogs that it's possible for us to control them with nothing but our eyes.
Hi. I have a 14 month old female Malinois that is crated and gives engagement like Fury. She has no access to toys other than when we go out. The issue I have is when she gets the toy, we play fetch or tug, but after a bit of time the recall fails and she shows signs of conflict. She will use things in my garden as barriers and it can be very difficult to get her to come back to me. I have tried to make me the only source of fun and engagement but this is still happening. Any ideas of what else I can do to prevent this from happening?
When you say he is in his kennel do you mean crate? Or the bigger cubical area behind you?
Is it possible to do all these things with a 1 year old dog? my dog isn't crate changed he knows how to go in an out of the cage. but can i re train these things to him even thought the window of opportunity has gone?
Is the same to keep the dog in the crate in your living room or in the crate in the garage where is no people around?
Really good tips. We crate our 7 mo. Mal for several 'nap' times a day and when released the focus is definitely stong. Now if I could just focus myself on training during those times we'd probably be much further along. My bad.
Will this work even if the dog has had more freedom for around 8 months? My dog is totally engaged with me with play, but on the trail (off leash) or on a walk (leashed) he's pretty ambivalent to my existence would like to be more important. We do spend a lot of time together interacting, so it's not an issue of lack of bond.
I have a question about fury: it seems to me like she’s showing signs of stress like panting, tense face and ears pinned back throughout a lot of the talking part of the video. Would you be able to tell me your take on that? I’m just looking to broaden my knowledge and am curious if there’s more to that than I notice. Thanks!
Yes, when I see videos that show the dog stressing and whining I wonder how healthy that level of excitement is, when nothing is going on, or just heeling is being asked for.
By temporarily withholding the things the dog values, you're actually making them happier in the long run. If the dog constantly gets what it wants all the time, it will naturally become desensitized and lose value for those things, unable to achieve the same happiness from those objects/activities.

i have a doberman that someimes on walks acts like im not even there. i just started doing these steps and i allready noticing a difference
Do you gave an underground fence? Or how do you keep the dogs in the yard?
They are malinois (velcro dogs/perfect recall naturally) unless you did something wrong during puppyhood they never want you out of sight. They are not runners.
@@thunderandstorm4957 not all mals are that way. My friends mal is a runner and cannot be off leash much in an unknown environment. She is VERY prey driven. She is fully trained as a protection dog, and also does competitions in dock diving.
My Belgian malinois is fully engaged with me in a concealed park with gates and she listens and heels perfectly without even a leash but when at walks she gets really off of it and wants to attack everything how can i improve this
Great food! The only company that I know of that the owner actually ate nothing but their dog food. I'm not sure how long he are it, maybe a month 🤔

We have that type dog, high drive and intelligence. Food and prey driven so easy to train. Wants to please and work. She's Catahoula Leopard Dog and Rottweiler cross. Super athletic.
Hi can I ask you if it is normal for the malinois to bite you when you run? Cuz this happens when I walk with my malinois but when we're walking we're okay but when I run she tries to bite my legs or pants. How can I correct this behavior?
I find with my puppy if you have treats in your hand let him follow your hand around while you walk and reward him when he doesn’t bite it’s like the beginning of teaching them how to heel

I’ve never heard it this way but interesting, I’ve heard to teach a puppy to learn to be slightly independent or confident by themselves too so they don’t develop separation anxiety/ be extremely needy of you, they can sometimes help themselves, but also more than ready to engage with you, so would the time in the crate be that alone time of theirs?
Soo what I’m asking is can you evaluate a little more, is this specifically for malinios that you wantt them to be on you looking at you for play/ direction. When is it engagement and when is it being needy to where sometimes you’re like okay i need to do this ‘task’, with you out of my way, but not necessarily in the cage every time u need to do something? or is this engagement for dogs in general
I ask cause I’ve been confused. Usually ppl don’t want , what seems to be needy dogs but want their attention or focus calmly.
Leaving the dog alone does help develop independence and prevents separation anxiety.

@@esaflaka9155 guess that depends on what the purpose of the dog is. If it’s a pet, they need to learn to chill around you in the house, plus you have a life outside of the dog. They are going to have alone chew time. If it’s for sport, some people only take them out to work, so they condition themselves to be a reinforcer for excitement only and don’t let the dog find them boring.

Adopt a dog (or cat) rather than shop for one. There's a perpetual ocean of them already out there waiting for a good home.
The dog that gave you such incredible engagement, can you “release” her so she knows that “now I can go be an actual dog, run/sniff/swim/mark/explore/chill etc? Or is she always this way? Maybe it’s a breed specific thing for working dogs as tools, but it seems so robotic. Not the way I imagine dogs having a good natural “dog” time. Also, crates are illegal where I live unless transporting.
Yes, imagine this being a Swedish trainer, it would be massive protests. Still, she has a point.
I agree with much of what you say about restricting access to value-toys and such, but when I bring a dog into my home, he/she is here for companionship, friendship, interaction (other than training and playing), etc. For one, I raise Dobermans, and anyone who raises Dobies knows they are "velcro" dogs and crave their human's affection and attention; I'm not to saying they run the house or my life, for they do spend time in their crates when I have important things to do or must go where they can't, but to lock them up in their crates just to have them "starved" for ones attention, for me, that borderlines on cruelty, abuse and egocentric behavior. My Dobies are my friends, and there is a saying, "Get a Doberman, never go to the bathroom alone again." It's cute but true. Do I have focus issues? Yes, but I will give complete focus up anytime to have a friend who isn't starved for my favors; would you do that to a spouse or one you are dating or a friend just to get them to fixate on you or want more of your attention? I wouldn't.

You’ve got this somewhat backwards, actually. Bitches tend to be more domineering and territorial, as females are typically the leaders in canine packs.
My female is super territorial-- bordering on aggression.

Crates are for dogs to use as a safe and comforting place. Kinda like a kid's bedroom is their private resting place. Crate trained dogs are happier and calmer. So many misconceptions of the purpose for dog crates. There is a right and wrong way to crate train. Most people are just too lazy to put in the work.
OOPS!!! My 4 month old Mal Buddy has been spoiled. I had tons of toys on the floor in my family room...they will all be removed now.

In case you don‘t only make your videos for people living in the USA, I just wanted to inform you that many of the things you suggest or use would be completely illegal in Europe.
In Switzerland, where I live, it is illegal to keep your dog in a small cage. Cages may only be used for short periods of time and for a Malinois (according to size) the minimal space requirement would be 8 square meters (86 square feet) for such a cage, per dog.
The E- Collars and any sort of spiked collars are not only illegal, they are considered animal abuse, also any sort of collars that may choke the dog are illegal. So we cannot train them with it here at all.
It is illegal to keep the dog in a box too, specifically described in the law. It states that, if you let your dog sleep in a box, you must remove the door of the box first.
In addition, leaving the dog run in a small backyard is not considered free range and neither is keeping them on a (even very long) chain.
We are required to go on walks daily and the law also says we must let them roam free, off leash when possible and they must have social contact with other dogs. Germany has almost the same laws.
This way, it can be much harder to properly train a dominant Malinois and have it engage with you and never be distracted.
Btw not saying you are doing anything wrong, just wanted to inform.
That laws my friend are not casual, are not cause we like dogs run free, etc. Is just common sense and how other domesticated species are supposed to live out their lives. Boundaries are important, but more important is to educate your pets with love and dedication, socialise them to such an extent that they become friends with the ants if necessary. in this way they live a fuller life and so do you. Belgian Malinois are working dogs, which means that they adapt to ways of life that other dogs simply do not understand. Having three Malinois in your house loose is definitely not a good way to live in peace. The question is: why have three Malinois when you can have three golden retrievers loose in your house without them being a problem? Each breed of dog has been created to fulfil a function within its (pack) family. Choosing the right one is the best way to a successful and happy future development for everyone. The use of kennels in common sense is for transporting pets or specific situations in which we want the animal not to move, such as a medical problem; not to punish them or to make them sleep there or to get them into any kind of behaviour. Education is the key to keeping pets as free as possible without compromising their safety or the safety of other living things in the environment.
There must be plenty of dog fights there with all the unleashed dogs roaming without responsible restraint. Your government is too oppressive. We have freedom of thought and belief here in the US. Crates are for dogs' benefit.
" Freedom" to roam does NOT equal best dog care in all situations. Dogs don't have to be " socialized" by meeting other dogs face-to-face. That's a man made idea. I prefer to protect my dog from being attacked by other dogs. Here, if your dog is unleashed, you aren't controlling your dog in public, your dog is crossing boundaries or trespassing, and owners are legally responsible for any problems or damages your dog creates. What about a dog walking up and biting a child?
I agree with the concept of avoiding crates, but I think it's wrong for a government to be that invasive with people's liberties. I have a different way of getting complete engagement from my Malys without crating, but this requires a lot of work which most people are not willing to do. Most people want an easy, quuck way to have the full attention of their dogs by these types of extremes. I respectfully disagree with the concept shown here. I love my Maly- and he loves me- and the freedom he has. This respect leads to an awesome relationship with these little friends. I'm not looking for a perfect show piece dog that must stare at me every second they are with me- I just want my Maly to be a well behaved, obediant, healthy, disciplined friend- and he IS. Dont think for a second that you can't have absolute obediance AND engagement without crating- it just takes a lot of work. My (9th) Maly goes with me virtually everywhere, is in engagement when I want him to be, and enjoys a very full life as a partner in my work and family life. How? You must be willing to dedicate a lot of time to giving them attention- especially when in puppyhood. It is normal for puppies to have difficulty with focus for a considerable time- after all, they are discovering a whole new world. Once the basics are trained and they understand the concept of focus, they will engage you out of love- even over food. Thats when they become awesome partners and friends instead of showpieces that must live a restricted life...

I've watched a few of your videos now & alot of what you talk about makes sense. But why do you need to use an e collar or a prong collar on your dogs?
A dog weighs which half or more your own weight needs more effective control. Using the prong makes walking the dog POSSIBLE. No one benefits from being pulled down the street. The resistance against the pulling is very hard on the joints and is downright dangerous! Dogs need to be mannerly. These tools are needed for some dogs. There is no " one size fits all" training tool for dogs anymore than there is a " one size fits all" method for parenting children. Each child is unique. What works with one will not necessarily suit another.
Second Dog's engagement feels more like an obsession with you. That feels a bit over the top for me. I prefer a more relaxed dog.
I WANT my dog to be obsessed with me 😉
It’s a lot better than having a dog that doesn’t care about you as a handler at all.

You missed the whole point of what engagement is.
Not a proper comparison video. Different dogs, different equipment on. What is a proper experiment is same dog same equipment, with and without crating first.
I disagree Caesar is the best dog trainer.

Even if he mysteriously can communicate with dogs, that doesn't always mean that you humans he trains will be able to duplicate that communication.
I totally disagree with his mongering with Bloodsport dogs as pets.
No one who actually cares about the welfare of all dogs wants to have more dog killer dogs to be born, acquired, or to infest a community.
Of course it's not the dogs fault, it's the fault of the breeders and those like Milan who support their intentional selective breeding for the traits and abilities to want to and to be good at dismembering and killing dogs.
