As an AE86 fan I agree. It's a great car but not that much that everyone makes it seem like, sure it is one of the important cars that helped establish the JDM car culture but it's obviously not the only one or the first one to do. And another thing is that everyone thinks its an extremely fast car and that's because of Initial D but even in Initial D Bunta said that despite how much Takumi loves the 86 he has reached his limits with it and if he wants to improve he has to drive the Impreza and in the ending too (in the manga not the anime) when Matsumoto asks to Takumi if he should find a new engine for the 86, Takumi clearly declines saying he's not thinking about it which indicates that he too finally realised the limits of the car and is now ready to let go of it in order to ascend to the next levels as a driver.
I wonder what actual drivers of the AE86 think about the car's performance (not just from its powertrain, but its handling dynamics too) before Initial D came to be. I'd like to try driving one for the raw feeling of it.
It’s weird how people think it’s some sort of super car. The whole reason it became popular in the 80s and 90s was BECAUSE it was underpowered. It made people realize “look, you can even take a corolla and turn it into a drifting beast with enough practice”. It represented the idea that power wasn’t everything, you just needed a well balanced, great handling car.
That's the thing... The ae86 wasn't just slow, but the stock handling on one also sucked, that's why it was used in initial D, because it was the worst car to make takumi look like a badass
For the RX-8, I love it because it is an amazing chassis that handles great. The engine problems can be fixed with enough effort, even if it involved slapping a K20 in it.
If you have an rx-8, you should definitely k-swap it. The k series is very easy to install. Im not sure if you will need different engine brackets or clips to mount it to an rx8 but theres nothing a k20 wouldnt fit into. And if you had a large budget i totaly recomend a frank k20/24
