      Yes. House of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski is the best example of ergodic or experimental literature I've read. This book S is also intriguing, but is mostly epistolary (told through newspaper articles, diaries etc). I'll check out S, it seems cool, but I feel it will not come anywhere near the terror/ horror that HoL invoked in me. The marginalia and false narratives in HoL almost drove me mad.

      He's good at nothing, he's the cinematic anti christ. He destroys everything he touches and all he knows how to do is mystery box garbage where you never learn anything because he can't write worth a shit. He's destroyed two franchises so far, star trek and star wars, he's now over at DC about to fuck up batman and superman. I guarantee dc movies get even worse than they already are, mark my words.

    Only now am learning of this unique thing and know of House of Leaves. I recommend a show called "Fringe" that WAS produced by JJ Abrams that was eventually handed off to team of Lost producers and a good director for much of it, that I had often thought of as "X-Files" lite at first impression and then it became this journey, for my taste, that I highly recommend for its characters and for lost-philes as an antidote. As for the Ship of Theseus, I would like to find the source material that inspired this unique type of work. Also I will just say that the polar bear stood for the lost producer's love of Philip Pullman books maybe? That's my decided head canon for that question: Golden Compass/His Dark Materials! Title just came to me!

    I always thought it was pronounced ship of thee-see-us, I guess that shows how much I know haha. I guess I'm more hesitant to read this than some other people are because I have reservations with J. J. Abrams. I've enjoyed a lot of the stuff he's done at a superficial level but I never feel like I've got a lot out of it by the end, a bit like you said with your reaction to Lost?
    Ooh, it's so hard to pick just one book for the most unique I've ever read but I guess In Search of Lost Time might be it? Brilliant. Why weren't you the writer?

      @@Bookborn Sadly, I think writers wanting to outsmart their audiences has definitely done more harm to their shows, rather than just finishing their original vision and letting a select few people feel smart for figuring it out ahead of time. Also I should never be a television writer because I would make sure every show has a Jar Jar Binks and I could never help myself haha

    • @Bookborn
      @Bookborn  3 роки тому +1

      @@WJT225 STOP YOU ARE CURSED. How could you invoke the name of Jar Jar?
      And I agree. Who cares if you don't outsmart people? There are plenty of good stories that I've guessed endings on before. I do think it's a problem in content today; I felt that way about the BBC Sherlock. Not necessarily in outsmarting, but just listening too much to fan opinion. I felt the first two seasons were sooo good. But as it kept going it felt clear to me they had read things on Tumblr/Twitter/etc and changed their vision. That's when it started going downhill for me.

    • @WJT225
      @WJT225 3 роки тому +1

      @@Bookborn I still definitely need to check out the BBC Sherlock, although I've held off because of comments I've heard that initially turned me off. But as far as trying to outsmart the audience goes, my favorite execution has been done by Eichiro Oda (author of One Piece) who has his editors find wild fan theories online so that he can outdo them in weirder ways, rather than just give a twist to outsmart his fans, and he usually does a good job of it (so far). Of course a story being serialized into weekly chapters definitely gives a big advantage over filming a show 1 season at a time each year.

    • @Bookborn
      @Bookborn  3 роки тому

      @@WJT225 That's interesting that Oda has found a way to turn fan theories into something that improves the work rather than cheapens it. Although, I'm someone who tends to not like fan service at all - like when the Millennium Falcon first shows up in Ep 7 of Star Wars I rolled my eyes at the scene. Fan service at it's finest AND cheesiest.

Super hard book to describe. At the simplest level it is a magic school book but in reality it is much more than that. @@Bookborn Well if mispronouncing a few names is your biggest foible you are doing all right! Speaking of names, did you know that Terry Brooks steals some of his character names from maps or an atlas? I know this as there is a demon character in his books called Findo Gask. Which just happens to be the name of a small hamlet I used to pass by when visiting a friend in Perth. A useless but marginally interesting fact to make up for correcting you earlier. ;)

    hate to spoil this for you, the ending of lost is an "it's all a dream as the MC's brain was dieing" it ties everything up in a half baked awful way by saying "ohh that was all in his head it meant nothing" All the "the numbers!!! What do they mean!!!" was for not. I remember when they first aired the ending and everyone was so mad. JJ does not know how to write an ending to save his life and the reason is he does not write. he builds in chucks and works himself into a corner. It's sad that the writer did not manage to stop that happening here.

    The hatred towards Abrams is misplaced. In most cases. He can see him to the idea for lost and he was a producer but he didn't run the show nor Did he write it. He also got screwed over in the case of Star wars because he was hired to set up a trilogy and then on the second movie it was handed off to someone else who completely screwed up the story he had designed, and then he was tasked with trying to fix it for the third movie.
    Also, the constant mispronunciation of Theseus is painful here. It is Theseus, not thesis. Two very different words
