    Thanks for working hard at making this videos, I can sit through a whole hour and it doesn't get boring or repetitive. The way you set up participation keeps me involved and makes me think. French is the fourth language I'm learning and got to say that the French is very economical in the use of words specially when speaking fast, it's exiting to be able to follow a movie and actually understand what is going on. Thanks again! You make the best videos!

      Indeed. Moreover, I think it shows a facet of your concept: I would call it a 'complementary approach'. Assuming, one has already enjoyed (and suffered...) quite a bit of standard didactics of language teaching, conjugation tables, schemes, ... you kind of fill the gaps, or really, you take those gaps and highlight them, putting them in the center of attention.
      Though, I am still relatively new to your channel, so I will continue to let it sink it... :) Cheers! Bien cordialement!

    Just found your videos and love them! Learning French came pretty naturally to me in school because my first language was Spanish which is similar (yay Romance languages!) but I've always had a Spanish accent when I spoke! Your videos are really helping me pronounce better! I noticed French has a lot more hard stops and use of the lips and "squishing" words together and I noticed myself always trying to pronounce every letter and use my tongue more to speak (like in Spanish!). thanks for the help!

    • @LanguageCity
      @LanguageCity  8 років тому +1

      Bonjour Priscila, it does help to speak Spanish when you try to learn French, doesn't it? At least a little bit. Well, the use of tenses, sentence structures are the very much the same. Even many idiomatic expressions can translate word for word. Spanish is more straightforward in terms of pronunciation. We do combien plenty of sounds together creating new sounds, we drop syllables if not entire words... It's trickier. What makes it hard is that schools and methods never teach all that. People are left to figure it out on their own.

    • @drmichaelelinski6992
      @drmichaelelinski6992 5 років тому

      Priscila Marquez-Bourque, je suis anglophone américain et je trouve qu’il existe en français, comparé aux autres langues, « une bouche française » où les lèvres sont tendues et arrondies avec de la tension. En plus, la langue est tenue dans une position rigide dans la bouche avec le bout de la langue positionné contre l’aspect postérieur des dents antérieures. La bouche française est très rigide comparé à la bouche « paresseuse » des Américains. Si on essaie de parler le français et prononcer les sons français avec cette bouche relaxée américaine, on aura toujours un accent américain tandis qu’on parle français.
      Je dis cela parce que je pense comprendre ce que tu dis en comparant l’espagnol et le français. En espagnol, chaque syllabe est prononcé, mais en français des sons sont coupés. En français, les voyelles sont prononcées de la même manière tout le long du son de la voyelle. En anglais, le ton du voyelle change et s’affaiblit pendant sa prononciation.
      Je le trouve intéressant de comparer des linguistiques des langues variées.
      Merci de ta commentaire et merci Alex de tout ce que tu nous enseigne. À+...

    This is a really great video; i especially appreciate the literal translations such as "Do you do the fat morning?" - people will say 'oh but don't do literal translations' - yeah no shit - we know, - but being able to understand what each word in the french phrase means/is and how/why it is being used, is extremely useful. I could have just learned the phrase and went around saying "grasse matinee" oblivious to what grasse or matinee was. Without the litereal translation i might have to assume that sleep = "grasse matinee".

      @@LanguageCity my in-class room lessons are much more expensive than yours, I really may consider joining in December! I do have a question though, I'm Canadian; do you review many differences between the two (FR french & CA french) in the classes at all? Would I be able to stay on track and not get too confused between the two you think? Thanks!!

    • @LanguageCity
      @LanguageCity  6 років тому

      @@familylife500 You know, French as it is taught in classrooms is very theoretical. Teachers don't even realize it. Some from a classroom French perspective, these lessons will help you a great deal. Now in regards to actual French as it is spoken by native speakers, there's a pretty big difference in terms of pronunciation, accent and vocabulary used between the French & Canadians. Canadians can usually adjust to French people (not the other way around). It's very much like a Canadian trying to understand some Scottish or Australian people if that makes sense.

      Thank you for your kind words. It's always nice to hear. There are even more "faire" expressions. This is only the beginning! The rest of it is available in the French IA course at www.language-city.com/our-classes/french/#french-ia-class-registration.

    I love the way you explain some history of the language and it's development and say in English how the French use their language - ie Castle and Château and he makes a sign that's yes - makes it more memorable 😊

    So they use Faire for so many activities in French not like Spanish where Hacer is not however French pronunciation is so much more difficult and the spelling is not phonetic like Spanish . Your videos are incredibly helpful!

    • @LanguageCity
      @LanguageCity  7 років тому

      Right, they don't (over)use "hacer" the way we do. They usually go with other verbs. Overall, keep in mind that those who created French rules wanted the smartest and the elite only to master French, so they intentionally made rules complicated.

    • @uniquechannelnames
      @uniquechannelnames 6 років тому

      It's not phonetic, but french pronounciation of words you are reading actually do stick to a system very closely. Unlike English that is truly not phonetic and doesn't really have any system for pronouncing words you are reading.

    Love the example, "aime l'exemple" to "Blackmail" someone, make them sing, or make them talk, or to tell the truth against their will? Which in this case seems to be, "to do something against your will" Love things that make it interestingly fun to learn! Now a questionfor you if you don't mind? Would "way to go!" be "marche à suivre" or is that something that wouldn't be used in colloquial French? Also, things such as historic, examples and real world events, current affairs such as headlines, etc. would be great learning examples too?
    Thanks so much "ville de langue!"

    • @LanguageCity
      @LanguageCity  6 років тому +3

      Bonjour Plane of Inertia, merci! Oui, to blackmail someone, c'est vraiment "faire chanter quelqu'un". "Way to go!", c'est tellement idiomatique en anglais. "Marche à suivre", c'est complètement différent. Ça ne veut pas dire "way to go!". I think that as disappointing as it may be (my advanced students sometimes say that when they expect a colorful expression), we would just say "Bien!"

    Bonjour! J’aime tellement tes vidéos rafraîchissantes. J’apprends beaucoup et je te trouve très sympa. J’habite East Hampton, NY, et j’ai l’intention d’aller en France, au Tarn-et-Garonne, un peu au nord de Toulouse, pour un cours d’immersion avec un prof en novembre. Avant d’y aller le rencontrer, je me trouve soudainement très motivé d’apprendre autant que possible avant que je ne le voie. Je ne veux pas qu’il pense que je suis complètement nul en français à l’oral. Je trouve ton cours très séduisant et je pense à m’y inscrire. Je peux écrire quasiment sans trop de fautes majeures, mais parler français est entièrement autre chose... Je te remercie de tout ton aide...vraiment ! Il semble que tu habites Los Angeles, mais il semble que tu vas souvent en France. Cependant, je ne connais même pas ton prénom... Appelle-moi Michel, s’il te plaît. Depuis que j’ai commencé à étudier (je sais que tu détestes étudier) le français, tout le monde m’appelle Michel et j’aime ça.
    Qu’est-ce je devrais dire au lieu d’« étudier », s’il agit de quelques décennies? Depuis que j’ai commencé à « travailler » le français ?....ça n’a pas l’air correct du tout. Merci de ton aide!

    • @LanguageCity
      @LanguageCity  5 років тому

      Bonjour Michel,
      Content que tu aimes ces videos! Alors pour le verbe "étudier", dans ce cas précis, pour dire "I've been studying French for 5, 10, 15 years...", On utilise le verbe "apprendre" (comme en allemand, "to study" en allemand est "to learn"). Donc "J'apprends le français depuis dix ans." Je suis allé à New York il y a deux ans. Je dois vieillir parce que j'ai trouvé la ville trop bruyante... Je suis allé à Long Island en 1999 je crois... Un jour je voudrais visiter les Hamptons et Montauk.
      C'est super que tu puisses passer du temps en France avec un prof! En plus, dans le sud!

      Language City, Alex, j’apprécie cette recommandation excellente. Je n’ai jamais pensé à dire « J’apprends le français depuis 20 ans, voire plus.... ». Merci de ton aide.

      Taking classes at Language City would be one way :) You'll learn all the things you need to know that no one else seems to teach. Otherwise, play French radio at home, watch TV in French, even better: with subtitles.

      Language City that is true. In any language, slang terms and colloquialisms must be learned, otherwise true understanding isn't possible.
      I must say, your teaching methods are excellent. I stumbled upon your videos completely by chance, and I am nothing short of impressed. I can't wait for your instructional videos to be completely in French, just like the channels of many native French instructors I have found on UA-cam.
