  • Western Canada remains locked in a deep freeze with frigid temperatures hitting record-breaking lows. Advocates say the cold snap leaves those who are homeless in B.C. vulnerable.

I hope that lawmakers and public policy specialists and economists and other social scientists will work together to solve the homelessness crisis that is unfortunately getting worse in Canada and the US! Drugs and mental health issues are a significant part of this crisis. Failure to address this crisis means that there will be a decline in the overall quality of life for society as a whole. We are already seeing this happen in cities like Seattle, San Francisco and LA. We are already nearing 25 years into the 21st century and we must not re-create the same unsanitary conditions that allowed diseases that afflicted so many during the 19th and early 20th century, to haunt society again. Diseases like small pox, cholera, dysentery, yellow fever, tuberculosis, polio, typhoid fever, malaria,... can return if more and more people live in unsanitary conditions.

The Google story on immigration and refugee costs in Canada prove why this happens as do the poor employment practices lack of rent caps and Government ignorance. Make it an emergency and see how fast they turn tail. Canadians first and vote for change!

I haven't been able to go out this year for the same reason.
I may just set up my gear on the front yard, I have a couple of tall pine trees just far enough from each other to set up a ridgeline! Though my wife thanks I'm crazy, and has a concern about rules regarding having a campfire in the city lol

The amount of homeless seniors is deplorable. Media always insists on making our homeless out to be all a bunch of drug addicts. You never hear them tell the story of my friend, for instance, who worked hard all her life, paid her taxes, was a great home care worker who when she turned 65 was let go of her job by the Filipino agency that runs the home care. Turfed, jobless and homeless, she had a stroke, had to live in her truck afterward and was homeless for SEVEN YEARS. She never drank, never did drugs, was discriminated against by Filipinos, and needed home care herself but was "Not Qualified" as she had NO HOME. She finally died homeless after her second stroke. And the media would rush to paint her as a drug addict they are so sick and like being bad at investigating homelessness.

Walk ten feet into any patch of greenbelt/forest and there is a camp here. Cloverdale is not near any rapid transit system like SkyTrain, where normally homeless would be. A lot of it is self-inflicted with drug and alcohol problems. No matter how many times you try to help them, many fall back to the same trap.

I don't understand why in generations past, people could look after themselves, had pride in what the did. Why does everyone now expect handouts and free everything? I don't mean to sound uncaring but what is the difference in the generations?

That was never true. There were always people who fell through the cracks, who society failed to care for. As for the supposed difference in generations, WWII veterans came back home to a complete lack of care for their PTSD and injuries - it's part of the reason why the Legions were founded. They protested for better government care. People have always needed care greater than that they can give themselves. We just aren't taught about the poor and homeless of recent history in our schools.
