3 months after we posted our humble cover, it's with deep sadness we learnt of the passing of Shane McGowan of The Pogues. His unique, unmistakable voice, which popularised this tune among others, will be missed. Our condolences to his family. Sinéad O'Connor, Christy Dignam and now Shane McGowan - what a sad year it has been for Irish music... but we'll play on.
Sad times indeed for Shanes family, (and all those who loved him,) but he would have loved your pub music gig. Great stuff, its only the rain that stops me living there😀

What an absolutely beautiful moment, truly inspiriting. Ewan (the writer) and Shane (who did the finest rendition imho) would be moved and delighted by it, and would fit right in. RIP both.
Oh wow, I once flew to Toronto and on that Flight was a band called The Sons Of Erin, I was blessed to sit beside the lead singer who played his ukulele all the way from Vancouver and sang this song! ..that was 53 years ago! What memories!
I worked in Sarnia building a rail tunnel under the St Clair River, there was a lot of Irish and Scottish working in the oil refineries etc. One Irish family the husband worked on the rail ferry that our tunnel would close down. Yet we found friendship, his wife ran a B&B and Irish bands would stay there. Arriving late at night after their gig, but no matter some beers, bread and cheese on the huge kitchen table and the instruments would come out. I didn't play anything, but they would not have me just sitting there, so it was the spoons for me. But I had to cut down the visits to only Fridays and Saturdays, as work got in the way of enjoyment. PS: This was in 1994/5
About that time, in Sydney Australia, was a band the Sons of Arran. Perhaps the same, and this song was in the reportoire, along with the other great songs . The black velvert band, the town i loved so well, steal away, among many others
Wow!,That song always has the power to move me. I'm originally from Liverpool, and when I think of its rough old edges and wonderful people,I'm immediately back in my home city, even though I live hundreds of miles away now.
Me too, a scouser. . . and I was 20/21 on a working visa in Oz 90/91. Used to drive 20 miles to Molly Blooms in Port Melbourne . . . for this song and ' The Leaving of Liverpool '.
@@Dave-im3lm It is indeed. But the great thing about this, why it's so popular, and what makes it so reminicient, is it could be applied to any old dirty industrial/ex-industrial town. I'm also from Liverpool, and I also think of Liverpool when I hear it because that's the town I know and where I've always sang it in pubs (I've always known it was originally written about Salford). It's also why, since Irish bands started doing covers of it, most people think it's written about Dublin.
Only written as a time filler for a scene change for a play he had written (often forgotten that McColl completely reformed theatre before he did the same to folk music) but the song connects. For me, McColls point always comes in his final verse... and the song was a call for social reform of the working class cities. In the case of Salford, vtge Town the song was written about, that regeneration didn't happen meaningfully until the late 80s... over 30/40 years after MacColls plea

What a great song and what a great cover! 👍😄 Introduced to the Pogues as an Aussie teenager back in the mid/late 80’s. Rum, Sodomy and the Lash. R.I.P Shane McGowan.
Lovely, this reminds me of going to an Irish club in Harrow for a bit of a hooley on a Sunday lunchtime with maybe four generations, seven year olds to eighty somethings, all diving in and making marvelous music. That was decades ago, hope it's still happening!
Awww thanks! Yeah we try and play with dynamics to make it interesting. And add some cool instrumentation. And modulation, too... The Pogues version has 2 or 3 key changes! Were they trying for a Eurovision hit, or what?
I was at a small Ceilidh in Queenstown, NZ recently. There were songs and stories and over the course of the night some very fine whiskies. It was a welcome reminder that there are things infinitely more engaging than ‘reality’ TV social media influencers.
I've worked in many countries around the world and there's always an Irish and Scotsman sitting in the bar. Real and copy Irish bars, there's even one in Saigon where I now live, live music of course and it seems even if it's bad, a few beers and it's great. On one job there was a useless paddy laborer, but the foreman would not sack him. His joke telling in the pub afterwork was too good to be missed.
