The Entertainment Software Association represents the "AAA" game industry's interests in the US, and that alone qualifies it for side-eyes. Its recent pitch for E3 2020, however, is stunning in its awfulness.
So let's discuss the ESA and why the increasingly irrelevant E3 is set to become downright dreadful in the future.

The Jimquisition: Too hot for UA-cam's algorithm.
*shit
Too shit.
It's big, scary and now pink ;)
Well at least he attracts edgy teenagers
@@yap_yap_ No, actually. My viewing stats skew adult (single digit percentages for under 18s, last I checked). It's also part of why I am deeply unpopular - UA-cam's millions of kid viewers pretty much hate me.
@@JimSterling Think it's a combination of swearing not being kid-friendly and the content itself not being kid-appealing? Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, it's just what you do and you do great job at it. :)
Wow, the comments didn't immediately fill up with "I miss the old logo" which is how you *know* a change succeeded. Justin killed it on the new logo, and I have some classy (read: delightfully garish) pink aviators and a tie coming. Probably keeping the hat for now, because it's awesome. The intro music isn't new or altered, but Justin used a different chorus (previous intro used the last chorus, this uses an earlier one), so that's why it sounds a bit different. I'll either record a podcast or put an article up discussing the aesthetic alterations, but the short story is that this is just more "me." Hot pinks and purples have always been my thing, as anyone can testify if they've seen the color schemes I often go for in a videogame's character creator.
I miss the old logo dude.. 😋
It's got a bit of a Saints Row feel to it.
/shrug/ I really like both.
I feel you, Jim. Not much for aviators, but I just today ordered a pair of pink, frameless glasses. I also wear a feather in my fedora, so I can always appreciate rocking a fancy cap. :B

I think "Influencer" is one of the most cynical terms I've learned about recently.

ESA isn't even needed at this point, they only care about interests of publishers, not consumers, it was mostly made for rating system and protection, well they failed in that shit, and just advertising and shaking hands for scum practices instead now

He's not stupid enough to say "I'm doing charity to excuse my eeeevil.". Nobody is. Apart from the ESA, apparently.

.... Is it bad i clicked on this video wondering what jim's problem with the European Space Agency was?
Same.
I was wondering what the European Speedrunning Assembly had done to earn Jim's disapproval
I mean it's kind of a weird relic of Imperialism that the bit of the European Union the European Space Agency launches from is actually located in South America, but that's more France's fault than the E.S.A.'s, they just have economic/physics incentive to launch from the closest-to-the-equator zone that's legally in an E.U. territory
I feel the thing fell apart the moment they mentioned "influencers". It's by far the worst term in recent years.
absolutely
In my mind it just translates to "waste of carbon" when I see the damn word.
@@SwissyChief1265 mmm? i dunno- when i see the word i'm influenced to say "oh fuck off!"
Calling these people influencers is insulting the general population by saying they're just followers. Which, if you think about it, is unfortunately true.

this generation? I am sure most people, of any age, will or won't know at about the same rate. People were not somehow more or less savvy in yesteryear's,
There's a difference though. Salespeople actually get paid on commission for the garbage they sell you. The ESA basically treats influencers as free advertising.

Jim, you've just won video games journalism. All of it.
About UA-cam's algorithm: I recently had one of your videos about lootboxes turn up in my suggestions section. Your inimitable style combined with your high-quality substance ensured that within watching a few videos, I had become a subscriber.
So Jim, I would like to offer you reassurances that while you might not be getting the recognition and exposure that you want, nay deserve, the algorithm has not completely buried you from new viewers.
Thank god for you, Jim. And thank you for doing *actual journalism* while remaining entertaining.

Hear hear and it only takes one view for anyone with half a brain to realize the quality and message Jim works with👍
SableChrome Hi and welcome ... in my days only word-of-mouth helped getting me here ;)
Thank god for you, Jim, because you've just saved me a HUGE amount of money. I was seriously thinking about emitting a passport and going all the way from São Paulo - Brazil to L.A. to attend next year's E3.... But, by your description, even without the social media bullshit, it's a event riddled with long lines and not much to do besides being exposed to a buttload of advertisement.
And if that's what E3 is, I'm much better watching the Conferences on Twitch, and going to my local gaming convention (BGS) with my cosplayer friends. It's the same shit, but it'll cost me like 1/20th of the price.
Correct
Keanu Reeves also worked because he was involved in the game and appears to be quite taken with the whole game too, not merely appearing in it, actually enjoying it as much as he would if it were a pet project of his own. There are a few people, that developer woman who recently left would be one example, of people who are involved in a game (or a game company) and seem to actually love working there and excited about what they are talking about (and, just as importantly, not talking about things if they aren't genuinely loving it). Someone who just did some voice work doesn't work.
Not taken. Breathtaken
I've been hearing that he was enamored with the game and actually wanted them to give his character a bigger part..

At least Luthor's evil goals revolve around hurting ONE person, rather than screwing over massive groups of customers.
"Control content and the message"
Sounds Orwellian to me.
Yup, there are actual elements of 1984 in how the industry goes about business. They hide the truth and obscure it from parents, and authorities, just keeping it between the abused and the abuser. This is their little secret, make it all glitzy and innocent-looking, while they touch us in places we don't really want them touching us in, but they do it even so. "Change the appearance of your character, yay!" (for the same price of the game).- In fact, charging money to do something that used to be part of the game cosmetic experience for free is pretty much r4pe.

Or
The fact that they want 10k more people when they can't guarantee the safety of the people who attended previously. They couldn't protect however many people's information, so let's 10k more people's information to our watch.
Oh, the extra 10k people will have no effect on how difficult it is to protect. A database is a database. You can add another 100k people with no difference.

Feels like the world doesn't give us much of a choice these days but to get more cynical. Shit like this is just apex corporate cynicism.
@@donbeverage8359 It's not truly cynical if it's based on every prior experience. If someone repeatedly punches you in the balls every time he sees you then it wouldn't really be cynical to say he'll do it again.
If a company donates to charity, 99.9% of the time it's a PR move. The only times it's not is if the charity is something very personal to the company.
Last charitable action that didn't smell of PR (that I remember anyway) was Ubisoft offering the Notre Dame model from Assassin's Creed Unity towards the Notre Dame reconstruction.
@@elegantoddity8609 What if I just feel like saying "fuck it"? Just for the fucking sake of it?
@@GNatanel Or tax avoidance , create a "charity" or latch onto one donate money or items then rent back or take low interest loans from said charity on a peppercorn basis and pay no tax on any funds used.
So they wanna make E3 have more people by limiting appointments that the average joes can't try the same stuff? That's all the more reason not to go in my eyes.
Ah, so that's the reason the E3 is dying.
@@TheAlison1456 Oh no, it's dying for many other reasons. This just seems to be their NEW gameplan for having people with potential negative opinions standing by the way side as they get spunky personalities who just rattle on being popular in front of their games giving them popular, un critiqued exposure as Jim said.
The thing is, they began the downward spiral when the booth babes were bouncing beach balls, and a magical good time was suddenly declared too much for the following year. They then turned E3 into a closed door kind of gig, and so people were only seeing most of anything at those closed door meetings out of light of masses all together.
Now they took things out of the shadows a while ago, but by then they already broke the spirit of E3. Now they hope to push the buzz to get those numbers back even further, but then stand them in lines at their ideal show times, and just have popular, chatty, biassed voices just yammer great things about games with no serious critique. Like watching Will Smith look up at a fortnite bus and say 'that's hot' like he did in that youtube video that was given more thumbs down than a spartacus convention through a kaleidoscope.
A proper spirited expo for games should be done like a convention. For the fans, some fair questioning, and with people being able to see some time special events, BUT, with plenty of things running around the clock for people to enjoy with questions in minds, and experiences to see that fuel feedback in turn.
That video of Nintendo employees on stage physically hurt me
I love the new intro Jim. Very nice and short, very good!
“Social good brand”! Hahaha, PR and marketing absolutely is the pimple on the backside of humanity!
Oh no, not FOMO! 😥
let me comment on the video while i've clearly not watched it yet

That is what Colonel Campbell warned us about at the end of MGS2.
"We want to eliminate content and create context."
You're not pathetic or a wretch. You do good work and I thank God for you as you provide regular high quality entertainment all while keeping me informed about industry bullshit.
Oh Keanu Reeves I love you

Me personally, I love e3 2020
You're good Jim. I appreciate your creative honesty, and respect your not adhering to corporate friendly etiquette, or algorithms. It's rare that a person can somewhat trust that a stranger on the internet is being honest and unbiased about their opinion. Good work.
(I rarely comment or interact with videos, esp. gaming videos; and normally only to criticise)
I measure your success in this matter on the lack of advertisements I see attached to your videos. Truly a good sign
lol UA-cam hates you so much that i didn't even get notified that you uploaded this in my notifications... i even had the bell enabled .. i had to browse your actual channel to find it lol.. keep up your god blessed work Jim.
I hate my job, I hate my life even more; but there is always Jimquisiton on mondays.
I'm glad you roast the new E3, Jim, because heaven's knows the influencers aren't going to!
I'm surprised more companies haven't left E3 sooner. Microsoft must have payed several million dollars to pull together their press event in 2013, and all it got them was universal scorn. Interestingly, if memory serves, Nintendo didn't attend E3 all those years ago for the same reason that Sony didn't attend this year - they had nothing to show. By the way - isn't Phil Spencer, the head of XBox, also on the board of the ESA?
Well, it's not like most games journalists do much better. They spend half of their time complaining that games don't pander for their ideologicla views enough and other half bashing gamers aka their readers for being toxic and entitled, latter usually because they try to oppose anti-consumer practices.
So yeah, that duty criticize the industry falls for UA-cam pundits once again
Jim is an influencer. He certainly influences me.
@@retrohanska4441 There are some gamers that deserve it, though. The recent mechwarrior strategy game, Battletech (?I think?) Made me facepalm. It got a massive review bomb at launch because, when you made your character, they gave you a coice of Male, Female and (grasps pearls) OTHER. It didn't force anything on anyone and merely changed the pronouns in dialogue to fit the choice. Yet a bunch of people went fucking batshit insane. Those people WERE toxic little shits deserving of ridicule.
That said, the response to thematic elements in Cyberpunk 2077 (the exploitative advertising of a trans woman, naked boobies and the animals gang) by SJW baiting hacks was just click bait horse shit of the worst kind. Gamers rightly called that out. It just gets tiresome when these two camps of outrage fetishists keep shitting all over our hobby.
Sorry, I'm in a rolling, rambling ranting comment marathon. I think about 10% of this was relevant to your comment. I'll be going now.
@@retrohanska4441 Don't forget, a lot of game journalists are also afraid of saying any kind of actual criticism towards major game publishers and developers out of fear that they won't get early review copies of games, which will eat into traffic to their site.
A new Call of Duty or Battlefield or Bethesda game might have terrible Microtransactions and other predatory practices associated with it on top of being shallow and mediocre, but you can bet your ass it's going to get good reviews from critics because they want to make sure they get early access to whatever the next big hit is going to be.
@@CDL_Gaming Bethesda get good reviews? On what planet?

Feels like 1984 was a prophecy and not fiction.
It's called Predicitve Programming
It's almost hilarious how close that book was. Like, not just socially, but even all the far-flung future technology described in the book has come to pass.
> Voice recognition? Well on its way.
> Floating fortress? Not sure how else you'd describe a modern aircraft supercarrier.
> Automated writing and music machines? GPT-2 and other neural nets are basically where they were in the book right now.
> Two-way viewscreens... It's Skype.
> ...that you can never turn off? That or Kinect.
A prophecy gleaned from the innumerable times that people have vied to control content and the message before the book was written.
One of those "no shit, Sherlock" prophecies.
It's possible to draw parallels between society today and 1984, but there are clear differences. In 1984 information was closely controlled, but I think we have more in common with Brave New World, where information is available in such a flood that it all becomes worthless.
Self fulfilling prophecy I guess
