Meh. The Tonight Show is massively overrated. Its too tightly controlled by the NBC execs and they just use it to promote their own properties ad nauseum. Leno was perfect for thar role because he'll do anything for cash, but it was a bad fit for Conan. And the result of that mess is we got Team Coco and some great experimentation with format, a podcast empire, and the whole saving the Largo thing... none of which Conan would have been able to do under the tight control of NBC. Im grateful for Leno's dumb schenanigans every time I see what new thing Conan is experimenting with.
It's show Business, meaning you need ratings or the Networks can't sell commercials. If Conan had more viewers, he wouldn't be getting the boot ...again.

With the whole Jay Leno tonight show mess jay was supposed to retire and hand it over to Conan and he did for a few months then decided he wanted to come back and ended up in the slot right before Conan and NBC ended up giving him all of the big guests again over Conan and with that expecially being before internet video was such a massive part of the world and live tv was where it was at of course he was going to struggle when the old guy comes back with all of the guests and support right before you and plans to stay for a few more years. TBS was a much better fit for Conan allowing him to experiment more and try out different things and the show has been driven by his personality. His abroad segments and bits with the staff is never something that Falon, Kimmel, Colbert or Cordan could do. He was the driving factor much like Dave Lettermen or the previous late night legends. The only other semi recent late night host with that type of vibe was Craig Ferguson. I do think that HBO will be a. great spot for Conan because he wont be limited by regular TV standards with formatting or with regulations. As for raitings if you look at a lot of demographics thay generally dont watch live TV ex mellineals he does way better than the other hosts and his online clips do fairly well even without guests. The other hosts like Fallon or Cordan dont get amazing live viewership numbers either but do get celebrities to play dumb games or dumb bits and get loads of views on UA-cam but generally it has almost nothing to do with the host and all with the celebrities involved and the big parent company paying for advertising for it. Even with slightly lower numbers and going between several networks Conan is going to go down in history as one of the greatest late night hosts and probably the greatest of this era.
