To what extent did the research you present express correlation vs causation, and given the difficulty of proving causation, how did they support these claims? Also, if you stratify these personality traits on the extent to which people actually had control on their lives, were indeed responsible for success or failure, had positive or negative experiences of stability, is the outcome still the same?

I would agree that an internal LOC affects achievement-based success, however that mindset for me personally made me very unhappy. I was constantly thinking everything was my responsibility, and this made me have a warped sense of reality and an over-working problem. I am now the happiest I've ever been in my life, and my score is 46. Just an alternate perspective, not everyone is the same!

And i dont think it would be in touch with reality to think that we are in control of everything 🤷🏻‍♀️ We aren't gods. We are just human beings. We cant control what other humans want to do, who dies in a carcrash, who is born with a birthdefect, how many murderious psychopaths habitat this earth....
And i think its not respecting other person's boundaries, if we would belive we could control their actions, thoughts and feelings.

Came here to say the same thing. I scored 54, and frankly, I think that's better than a higher score. The truth is, THERE ARE many things in this world that we can't control, or that aren't worth the time and energy to try to control. Example: the questions about politics and protests - sure, maybe me attending a protest would have a teeny, tiny effect on my community, but it's not a good use of my time as an individual. The amount of control I'd get from doing something like that isn't worth it. It's better to release the things you don't WANT to try to control, in my opinion - but maybe the healthier way to frame it instead of "I have no control over this" is to say "I'm choosing not to take control of this." It leaves space for the truth that you could exert some influence on things if you wanted to - but you just don't want to.

Scored 47. I just can't believe that sucess is predetermined only by will. In the vast majority of cases in life, life just sucks and it's extremely unfair.
Despite that, i really believe that we can in fact use that lack of control to really understand ourselves and the world, the hard work generally pays off when you do it, but at the same time, we will never achieve all the things that we want. So, for me, it is important to have a mindset that strives to self belief, especially when analyzing by a more personal spectre of our own mind. However, is not that simple when it comes to things that you can't control at all: other people decisions, relationships and society functions.

It's beneficial to believe that success and progress are within one's control, so long as this doesn't prevent us from maintaining an awareness of the ways in which our world is structured by a system that is not meritocratic. The best application of a mindset that says that success is up to us is to succeed at creating a system where this is really true for everyone.

Success Orientation: 82 (Not surprised. I bounced back after hella trauma + 5 years of depression).
You have an internal attribution style when it comes to success. You tend to interpret your success as a result of your skills, intelligence, nice personality, etc., rarely attributing it to external forces. As a result, you are able to accept the credit you deserve. Your self-esteem, motivation, and general well-being certainly benefit from this orientation.

Does it not bear repeating here that correlation does not imply causation though? And are we just talking about financial success? If so, when you live in an economic system where you’re more likely to be wealthy simply because your parents were/are, and when you live in a country like the US, where the generations who are old enough now to have even gained any success have largely been taught individualistic, “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” thinking, wouldn’t it make sense that a lot of financially successful people would score this way, without that thinking having anything to do with the actual reasons for their financial success?
What will the findings be when eventually younger generations, who are, as noted, increasingly turning an eye toward the systemic issues in our world (and gaining a more balanced locus of control as a result), are old enough to have achieved success regardless of, apparently, not having this “success mindset”?
The dark side of the thinking this mindset encourages is that it’s at the heart of a lot of what’s wrong with the world today. People blaming unhoused people and poor people in general for their lack of effort comes to mind immediately. That’s admittedly better than just thinking they’re innately lazy or something, but it still misses the point: that most of the time people are poor because the institutions in our world are functioning as designed. And if we don’t hold those institutions accountable, and just keep thinking we need to work a little harder in the face of rising rent and food prices, we’ll never be able to see the corporate greed that’s actually at the root of our own financial hardships. Our anger will never be directed at the true source, and we’ll never be driven to come together and hold those institutions accountable. We’ll just keep playing the game as the rules have been set out without ever wondering … Do these rules even make sense to follow? Is this the game we want to play? If we keep thinking so individualistically, we’ll never realize that together it actually is in our control to change the rules.

I also value social justice, and I think we can apply these principles to influencing the system and making a positive change in the world. We don't have to exclusively apply this mindset towards individualistic goals. Also, success doesn't have to be related to career and financial goals. It can be whatever is most meaningful to you, whether that be building deeper relationships, improving your health, working on passion projects, unionizing with your coworkers for more workers' rights, working towards a political movement, etc.

This internal trianing to succeed at these exams has mirrored this idea of success atribution in the video. My ocd tendencies have definitely been nurtured as a child by the belief that effort translates to success, so when I failed I didn't give myself credit for trying and started creating unrealistic expectations for the kind of effort I have to put in, because if i didn't succeed then I didn't try.

About believing what is true vs believing what is useful. I also lean towards consciously maximising my chances of success, so if there’s any possibility that I can control my success, I am the first person who should believe it. However, I noticed in the test questions that the analysis is based on a lot of generalizations. We should really consider the context of each situation, otherwise I can see this turning into cognitive dissonance the moment we try to believe something about ourselves that doesn’t align with what we believe in general about the world. My success orientation is 64%. I could improve my mindset, certainly, but I will never be at 90 because I on average cannot attribute everybody’s success to their own skills and control. That would mean we live in some meritocracy which is clearly not the reality.

I definitely do think similarly to you that some things are in control, and free will exists, but I recognize that many things in society are also outside of our control on an individual basis. (Collectively is a different story) I hope the world changes for the better, but for that to happen, we all need to adopt this mindset so that we can FEEL like we have the opportunity and self-determination to change it for ourselves, and for our neighbors or future children who are going to inhabit this place.

I wanted to say I was confident in being the master of my own fate. I don't give up easily, but I do think luck plays a big part in life. After the unpredictability of COVID-19, and being around people in 2021 who pretended to be my friends and not realising they contributed to my downfall until mid-2023, it made me realise there are things out of my control (and there are people who will do anything to take your opportunities from you).
I contribute this to bad luck but after realising where things weny wrong, I've been doing better in life and am doing all I can to be happier and successful!

thanks for pointing out about how our generation is more aware of power structures, privileges, etc and the fact that contributes to making our locus of control more external. I'd like advice/tips on how to change that attitude.
I have a fairly external locus of control now even though I used to have it more internal when I was younger. I think I fail to change my mindset simply by psychological tricks. The more I experience life, or observe myself or others, the more I see how much of who we are and what we do is not determined by our own choices but by the constraints on those choices, or past history. When it comes to health or relationships I find it a lot more controllable and stable, especially since it's immediate and I can see some immediate responses. But with my work or career it's much harder as a grad student to do that.

You have a mixed attribution style when it comes to success. Sometimes you interpret your success as a result of your skills, intelligence, nice personality, etc. Other times, you attribute it to external factors, such as luck, ease of task, or other people's help. As a consequence, you don't always take the credit you deserve. Your self-esteem, motivation, and general well-being would most likely be improved if you realized that you actively influence positive events in your life.

Before watching this video but after scoring 56 on the test: I believe that economic and academic succes are very much up to socioecononic background, and that this is heavily influenced by institutional racism and the patriarchy.
Now, oftentimes, people do not give themselves enough credit, or blame others for problems they themselves created. However, the notion that blaming the systems we live in is somehow a "woe is me", is created by these very systems in order to sustain themselves. And I think it is important to recognise that both realities can be true: people often blame others mindlessly, AND these problems are influenced by many societal factors.

I scored 59 on the test. I personally do think it's important to knowledge when there's something outside of your control that negatively impacts your chances so that you can do your best to make sure that the next time you try, your not in a situation where the same thing would happen. So even when it's something outside of your control, it's somethign you can learn from. I also think it's important to stay humble and recognize when you have had some luck, while still giving yourself the credit you deserve.
I think my test score is somewhat misleading since I'm very critical of myself and think everything should be in my control while I give others the benefit of the doubt much more easily if that makes sense.

    Seems kinda contradictory
I also believe in being the right person in the right place and time

I think if the problem to be solved is entirely dependent on me (fitness, exams, skills, etc) then I know I can succeed if I put in enough effort with the right approach. However, when it comes to problems that involve a second person, then I don't believe that success is primarily due to my own effort, because it's simply a numbers game. There are more "others" than myself.

I generally take responsibility for my failures in a certain sense - I made bad decisions and blew chances - but I don't in the sense that since then, for years now, I've made efforts to improve my situation by studying new things and passing various exams, but had no positive feedback or encouragement.
I have occasionally had encouragement for hobbies, but I don't see that as a great help. I'm getting quite old now, so I can increasingly see the point of view that I don't really need opportunities, but it doesn't make it more bearable.
I've been offered cognitive therapy, but it all seems quite platitudinous really. The reality is, it's ridiculously difficult to maintain motivation if you never have any evidence that effort is worth it and people who've had relatively more doors open for them tend to forget that.
I think sometimes, the only way to get out of a rut is to radically change one's situation - by living abroad, for instance.
That said, I take on board some of the things you said such as setting realistic goals because I am a bit of a dabbler. It is partly because I seek status, but partly because I'm just interested in a lot of things including things that I find difficult.
