Good words of wisdom at the end. Being 61 I've come to realize that I in the past laughed at things people did for their pleasure. But I no longer do that. Instead I get a smile on my face thinking how they enjoy doing it.
These videos are fantastic, you have inspired me to get back into this hobby after a 45 year break. The amount of products and the tips and tricks to help build these kits with such detail is awesome, we used to thin out black paint to make our own panel line accent, we also used to light a piece of scrap sprue on fire and hold the front top corners of the trailers above it in that nasty, sooty smoke to make the trailer look like the diesel exhaust had stained them. I'm going to build the White-Freightliner Day Cab and the Trailmobile set of doubles done up in the Consolidated Frightways livery. I don't want these to look too clean, I want some long haul dirt on them, squashed bugs on the windshield and the front of the truck, maybe some driving on snowy roads while being chained up grime. Do you have a video that shows some of these kind of tricks.
Watching you build this reminded me of how I used to sit and watch my dad building truck kits over 40 year's ago, what great memories, thank you for helping me remember.

I built this kit back in the 1970's and this reissue looks like it made a lot of improvements . The "Drip Rails or Stiffeners" that you reffered to are the hand rails that you can safely climb into the cab or go to the back of the cab to hook up the air lines. I drove on of these cab overs from the late 1960's to the mid 1970's and mid 1990's to the early 2000's , the rest of the driving was in a conventional.
Was really excited when round2 announced this kit! So happy to see your review of it. It really looks FANTASTIC!!! Glad to see the beer markings for us adults who enjoy the hobby and an occasional brew. Look forward to the trailer build. Should be a nice rig. Keep up the good work. 🍻
When I started driving trucks in 1973, I started with the sister truck to this truck, the Chevrolet Titan. Same truck, just different badging. This is a really awesome build as many of your builds are! I think it's pretty funny these AMT big rig builds have the wrong things in chrome, like the fifth wheels, brake chambers, and of all things that weren't chrome the grab handles on the old GMC Astros as also were called Jimmy's. I remember my dad drove one at a company back in the late 70s, and it had that crazy huge dog house dashboard that I actually slid down that little slide part, LOL and I'll always remember a power window run my air, because I got my arms got pinched bye it when my dad put it down for a second and it hurt for a tiny bit then we both laughed. You do incredible work with detail, and I really like how you use the Sharpies, it gives me a lot of ideas for some builds I need to finish. I have the original red cabover kit (can't remember the co. on the box - in the attic), but have you found a way to install the grill so it doesn't protrude/extend beyond the cab? It should be pretty much flush with the body. That's the biggest reason I haven't completed it. Want it to look right. And, yeah, I drove a few of these, along with a number of other cabovers. Gotta get going on building these again. I bought my first one around '72 and it was the Watkins W925 and later the Watkins reefer. My favorite build was the International 4070A by Ertl. SUPER kit! And the parts fit way better than the AMT kits.
Truly amazing kit and am currently building it only issue is the engine just won't fit into place I've looked everywhere can't find out the best way lol.
Great build. That green blue color you have is doggone close to Detroit blue. I remember years ago I was building a Peterbilt model that I wanted a lot of detail so ended up going to our local Kenworth truck dealership and getting real Cummins beige engine paint.
Thanks, I don't personally worry about perfect colors but if you enjoy it, rock on man! As long as you are enjoying your hobby your way, that's what matters. :)

At 7:12 you where wondering what it was, if it was a drip rail or what. What it is , is a handle railing to climb all over the side of the truck. If your climbing into the cab, or back to the doghouse (sleeper) or onto the back deck to hook up your air lines. And not all the time are y'all climbing from the ground. You might be going from the cab to the back deck, or the sleeper to the ground or whatever. So what they did was just try to make 1 that covers it all no matter where y'all are climbing to or what part of the truck you're coming from. I've always loved them cabovers if they are done right pulling tankers they look so good. Most uncomfortable truck on the road and not alot of drivers will drive them because they say they dont like sitting so close to the front end that you are guaranteed to be the first one to the scene of an accident when their is one let's just hope their isn't. I wish they wouldve continued to being out new better , more upgraded cabovers but they didn't because how everyone felt about them. Not a hot item.
I've got the AMT White Freightliner Cabover but it's currently on hold for the moment and I actually broke one of the chrome trim rings for the wheels while cutting it from the part tree. I also broke the two mud flaps while assembling and painting/detailing. Other than that, the whole kit is amazing and I never had a problem with the cab assembly as it is in two halves.
The best thing about your vids is your enthusiasm for the hobby :) Anyway, I'm off to finish off a couple of planes, some space ships, a robot or two, build some more planes, a tank or two... you get the idea ;) Cheers.

When I see some models my mind starts going and I can see what I want it to look like. Their the ones you really want to build and are excited to see your ideas come alive. And maybe if the cab comes out the way you like it's nice to get a trailer to match if so it looks like an old school trucker that owns his truck and trailer.
Does anyone know why this 8v71 is different to the one in the Peterbilt 352 Pacemaker. I put the engine in my Astro kit together today and noticed the fan belts were different as well as a few other things
Always enjoy these big rig builds, and I like the available options in this one. That's going to look really snazzy when hooked up to its matching trailer!
That turned ouf absolutely fantastic sir well, I do like the look of the old trucks, they look so brutish, take care and keep safe, best regards from Australia
Hi Chris. Great build as always. Can you say what the DecoArt Americana color used on the wood paneling? Looks almost more brown than yellow. Thanks...OB
Thanks man! Just grab a paint off the shelf that you think looks like wood. There are hundreds of brown/reddish paints that resemble wood, and also tans and what not that can be used to look like other types of wood. I encourage people to experiment and find what colors they like, find their own groove and style and concentrate far less on using the exact same brands, colors, style of things I do. Enjoy!
I love the fact that you use rattle bombs for all of your major paint work and your Future Floor Polish hack is genius! And I'd like to personally thank you for painting the engine "more commonly called power unit in the trucking industry" the correct color. That little detail is something that often irks me with other builders. The fact that you tend to use the correct engine block color single handedly keeps me coming back to see what you're going to build next. Alas, Detroit diesel uses Alpine Green and although you didn't actually have Alpine Green, you used something very close. I believe you called it Cobalt Green? At the very least, I now have a go to color that gets me close to Alpine Green. Anyway, thanks for getting that little detail right. Also, the happy accident about cracking the wheel ring, honestly makes it more accurate. The "Widow Maker" wheels, manufactured by the Dayton Wheel Company and used extensively back then, actually have a split bead ring that snapped onto the rim holding the tire bead in place. The story I was given for the nick name is because those rings would sometimes pop off before they could be completely snapped into place. They were put on using, basically, a 15 pound sledgehammer and would some times fight the installer. If the ring did pop off, it did so under great tension and was known to sometimes kill the installer hence the nickname... Anyway, thank you for your paint hacks and well thought out build options. I, as well as others I imagine, thoroughly enjoy your videos. P. S. I love the music choices you make instead of the irritating loops some people use. Carry on.... 😎
I try to get something similar to what the instructions recommend, but factory perfect builds are not my goal. On the International Transtar I painted it red, since IH painted all their engines red at that time, no matter who made the engine for them. And I've gotten dozens of comments telling me I'm 'wrong' because some folks refuse to admit they might not know everything. Thanks for the nice words!
I subscribed to your channel awhile ago because i like the way that you present the model builds, they are beautiful. I started again building models and was wondering if you could post a video how you prepare vehicles for painting. I have used Simple Green, soap and water wet sanding and they still come out rough in some parts.would appreciate your help and knowledge..I use 2X paints and some acrylics but 2X for the main parts.
@@markfergerson2145 Ah, the Carpet Monster. Second only to the Suddenly-Appearing-Void that appears every time you cut a tiny part off the sprue. My least favorite friends.
I learned to drive truck in a 79 Astro. Had a 6V92 Detroit and a 9 speed and Dayton wheels. I hated those types of wheels. They were an absolute pain to balance on a truck. Lol!!
in regard to the insrument panel decals not in the kit, you could print off a decal sheet of generic ones to use on future builds= make a bunch of them on just 1 decal sheet
Looks like a nice kit and I'll be picking up a couple of them. However, until they make a mold for some actual DRIVE TIRES, instead of just using 10 steer tires, I'll still be irritated! Now, you just need to build up one of those old police cars in Wisconsin Highway Patrol (or whatever they call it up there) livery. Then, after the trailer comes out, you can build a diorama of the truck getting a roadside D.O.T. inspection and the driver getting a citation for that cracked lock ring on his Dayton rim.
Looking at the finished shots, I see you did very grand. GMC often had wood panels for the switch areas and the gauge clusters. The valve covers you also did very grand as well. Detroit painted their valve covers green as well. If I was going to do a custom truck job, then I would leave the valve covers chrome.
You certainly can. Even the master Tim Boyd himself paints right over the chrome lots of times, per his own words in his articles. Your choice to build and paint as you wish.
Shoot man, I used to like them Miller ponies, the little bitty glass bottles you know, man they was pretty good when they were real cold! Buddy of mine loved the Miller Lite, drank them like water! Thanks for building this. This and the international look awesome.
Glad you like it!
I do love cabovers and your build is stunning
Thanks!
Enjoy!
Thanks for the reply Chris. Have a great day. Hopefully another Semi will be on soon. :)
See my video on painting with cheap spray cans.
I don't sand anything or worry about that stuff on my builds, it's all spray and pray.
Wonderful job on that truck! Thank you for sharing it. Cheer!
Is there a shifter in the kit?
Love it Chris, fantastic looking model, keep em coming.
Thanks, will do!
Just a question, Chris; why do you do some of your steps on what looks like a towel or piece of carpet? What cool tip am I missing?
Keeps small parts from bouncing or rolling into the insatiable maw of the Carpet Monster. ;>)
I just like the way it holds stuff in place, and keeps me from getting paint on things or damaging the model rubbing it on a desk top, etc.
@@markfergerson2145 Ah, the Carpet Monster. Second only to the Suddenly-Appearing-Void that appears every time you cut a tiny part off the sprue. My least favorite friends.
@@hpiguy Thanks, Chris. In almost 50 years of modelling, I'd never thought to do that. I am now!
Thanks again for another great build video I wanted to ask you were did you get your turntable and what size is it thanks
The electric one? You can grab generic ones at hobby stores, cake stores, jewelry sellers on Ebay, etc.
Now that looks right for a Detroit The 8V92
Thanks man!
I have contributed to this kit through the purchasing of their products. LOL!!
I love your big rig builds, great job Chris.
I learned to drive truck in a 79 Astro. Had a 6V92 Detroit and a 9 speed and Dayton wheels. I hated those types of wheels. They were an absolute pain to balance on a truck. Lol!!
Thanks for sharing!
in regard to the insrument panel decals not in the kit, you could print off a decal sheet of generic ones to use on future builds= make a bunch of them on just 1 decal sheet
Thanks man!
Looking at the finished shots, I see you did very grand. GMC often had wood panels for the switch areas and the gauge clusters. The valve covers you also did very grand as well. Detroit painted their valve covers green as well. If I was going to do a custom truck job, then I would leave the valve covers chrome.
Thanks Patrick!
Wow, I need to get one 🤘looks amazing.
You should!
I'm thinking this would be more like a regional truck. I would imagine a day delivery would be a day cab truck.
Is there a way to get the models into a 3d software?
Why not strip the chrome with purple power or oven cleaner prior to painting?
You certainly can.
Even the master Tim Boyd himself paints right over the chrome lots of times, per his own words in his articles.
Your choice to build and paint as you wish.
Very cool man! Can't wait to see that trailer built!! We used to bread fish and always add a can of Miller to the mix, very tasty!
Thanks man! Good ole Friday fish fry!
Shoot man, I used to like them Miller ponies, the little bitty glass bottles you know, man they was pretty good when they were real cold! Buddy of mine loved the Miller Lite, drank them like water! Anyhow, I been waiting to see you do this one, I’ve got it’s brother truck, the one they released last year or the year before, it’s not the Miller truck. Should be same kit as yours there though! Get er done son, get er done! Haha! Fine job, as always!
Thanks man!
@@hpiguy - no problem bud, YW!
Verrry Nice.. Is there ever a situation you don't prime before paint?
Very few, I like to prime most things first.
What kind of brown is it I picked the truck and the trailer up yesterday and I couldn’t tell what shade it was
All paints are named in the spraying section.
Nice one Chris great job love the big truck kits a lot of detail in a small box thank for sharing keep up the great work cant wait for the next one
Thanks man!
