This kit review is a nostalgic walk through my mid-teens. I wanted a truck kit from the moment they appeared in our local hobby/toy shop in the mid-70's. Oddly enough the Ertl kits were a few dollars cheaper (in Australia, where I'm from) than the AMT's. After scrimping and saving my pennies I finally had enough to get the Transtar CO4070 kit. Was definitely the best kit I had ever owned up to that time. This was around '76 (IIRC) and it took me a few months to build and paint the truck from start to finish. With hindsight I took some shortcuts and had a few "technique lapses" that I would not tolerate now, but back then it remained my proudest model-building achievement for quite a few years. I eventually partnered the Transtar with an AMT Fruehauf tanker, and the finished rig sat prominently on top of a bookshelf in our living room. In 1980 I went to college and lost touch with the entire hobby for about 10 years. I think my Transtar and Tanker are in landfill somewhere now. But hey, thanks for the memories!
I drove this truck back in the 80's being a cabover it was like sitting in a blender with wheels! It would shake so bad that the headlight buckets would work loose and fall off! Ah the good ol days!😉
I have an original of this kit back when it was an ERTL kit before they merged with AMT. Later today, I'm going to rewatch your parts presentation while I have my old kit to see what the differences and new parts/molds are. I know they were talking about how Round2 retooled the body to be more correct. Model on Chris!
This is the big rig kit I've been waiting for! I built one as a kid when they were released as an Ertl Blueprint kit! Those Ertl kits were the best on the market!
The instructions were first-rate and the kit came with masks for painting the cab with the box-top colour scheme -- included. Congratulations to Round2 for restoring it to its glory -- this kit put AMT and MPC on notice.
My father retired from the US Airforce, bought a white International Trans Star II,he loved that truck.I was 14 yrs old and let me go with him, On some runs and got to go to Tennessee and then Alabama, pretty fun to go.Bring back some memories, thanks for sharing. 🤩
I had this kit when I was a kid, the only thing I remember is the different front rim of being of the old style split type rim. the rears were chromed. other than that It did have numbered parts on the trees. the kit it's self is the same. but I had several mods (electrical / air lines) to one and did my own company logo painted by hand. it was the parent to company 7-11 (Southland Corp) also their distributor. my mods were opening cab doors, head, cab clearance, and tail lights, with a lighted dash, along with fog lights. the new kit now is much more with new additions. i also put in carpet (felt) and cloth for the bunk. did more detail to air and electrical lines. for the 5th wheel I used real grease from a real truck. I used the AMT Great Dane 40ft trailer and also did customizing in it too! inside I put in balsa wood, and light able clearance lights with tail. changed the opening doors to a roll up. made a lockable pin for the tandems on the trailer to adjust the tandems. used a rectangle box under the trailer for a the battery to light the truck and trailer together.
That's an awesome International cab over model! I believe my dad made this very one when I was a toddler based on his actual tractor he had, I remember it fondly because I played with it like a toy and unwillingly tore it apart. This does look like a nice model to build, I severely struggled on the AMT W 925 kenworth I see you have built one maybe it's a better mold than the Watkins version I had where nothing lined up, a lot of twisted parts and glue pins that hardly existed. I was building the Smokey and the Bandit "Bandit #2" Snowman tractor trailer and practically have the trailer done, the rear end assembly looks awesome! I even built landing gear feet from scratch styrene. Thank you for your incredible model building videos!
Nicely done I built the Ertl Kit back in the days my Mom brought it back from the US to Germany she found it at a Kmart in Kansas when she visited her sister
I'm not a big fan of green but I bow to the master of the rattle-can paint job -- you are awesome. I was surprised to see you brushing Testers silver enamel. It is great for touching up attachment points on chrome parts -- blowing lightly onto adds to the shine. But it hates drying for ever, and there are so many shades of metallic acrylics. Tip: If you want to hang some wire from the pogo stick to simulate air lines, you can use O gauge airline connectors to simulate the glad-hands. Attach them to the trailer's airlines and you can connect or disconnect them at will.
These C.O.E. are a soft spot for me. I remember when seeing these on the road all the time. Who knows that they were on the way out. When I spot them some times in this 2021 age. Can any of you remember when it was just normal to see these c.o.e. semi???....Dam I am old...Lol. Fantastic build Brother!.... As I like to say......You keep building them an I will keep watching. 👍. Ttyl.
Add my best wishes for your birthday too! May you do these videos for another 30 years! Semi rigs are generally outside of my interest, but I have to admit watching you build these makes me want to step WAAAAAAY outside my box and do one. You're responsible for all the COKE trucks in my stash and your enthusiasm just contributes to broadening my horizons. Thanks, Chris!
Chris, enjoyed your build on this International Transtar. My father-in-law drove one of these back in the 1970's. Pittsburgh to Chicago with a flat bed of steel. Hoped to build a tribute to him till I saw the price of the kit. I realize there is a lot of cost on mold development but $62.00 just seems a little expensive. Guess watching your build will be as close as I get to this rig! Keep building your way; and I'll watch and enjoy. Happy Birthday!
Chris, I stopped at 11:00 just to comment (oh, you better know, I'm going to watch the WHOLE vid). I agree with you 100%...THIS is a great first-glue-big-rig kit. I built the original waaaay back in the late 70's and just loved how easy it went together. I am so glad that @Round2 #Round2 bought these kits back for us older modelers (this particular one, I'm planning on a minimum of 3, possibly 4 kits). I really appreciate the re-do of NOT having chromed this that should NOT have been, as you pointed out, makes it so much more easy to build/paint for a more realistic finished product. Thank you for this (an all your) review and also....HAPPY 44!! Now, if you'll excuse me...I'm going back you your video...see ya!
A very Happy Birthday Cris. Instead of getting present you have given us a nice present,a long video with a beauty of a truck.Enjoy your B-day with your loved ones
Had the biggest grin the entire time I was watchin this, the enthusiasm is contagious. Im a robot kit kinda person but my dad drives trucks and it's made me interested in this side of the hobby. Never tried glue kits before, might try this at some point! Somethin about this hobby is just so joyful. And your build came out BEAUTIFUL!!
Trucker pulled up to the business next door to where I work with one of these. I did a double take. I can't remember the last time I saw one actually doing daily work.
When oh when are we going to get a 1/25 tow truck the smaller size?Sure would be nice to have some of the older construction rigs too!I really do like this kit tho.
I've built my fair share of AMT trucks and this kit actually looks impressive. I had long ago embraced hours of shaving and fitting to make the AMT trucks presentable
Remember... This kit was originally made by Ertl. AMT picked it up, redid the molds and added some more details her and there. The grunt work had already been done when they got their hands on this. But they still got it out to production so kudos to them for that. Lets see more of those!
Great build of a beautiful truck. I've watched a lot of different guys put kits together and I've 𝑛𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟 heard anyone sound this impressed with the quality of the kit. It's about forty years since I did any kit-building but a product like this makes me want to get back into it. Too often, we see folks wrestling with ill-fitting parts and badly designed assemblies. Everyone seems to accept this as normal but these kits ain't cheap and should 𝒂𝒍𝒍 be to this standard. Congratulations to AMT on producing something that people 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕 and doing it properly.👍👌😁
Happy birthday Chris! 🎂🎂 I'm 44 as well. Turn 45 in October. Nice build👍👍. A little tip for you..I use push pins to poke through decals for locating holes. Anything works. But I find that handy because always on my desk. Lol. Have a great birthday sir!
Nothing before this: Happy 44 birthday Chris! enjoy your day with all yours. Now, I can't take my eyes out of the truck! it's beautiful and indeed, very well assembled. Thank you for such a great work. May you have many great days like today!
I laughed so hard at you moving gearshift to lower cab. 1985. Dad brings home brand new Emeryville. Says to brother and I Leave the truck alone. I'll be back in an hour and show it to you." 15 year brother says "I got this." We get the cab up, do our examination and lower the cab without putting the stick through the hole. Dad was sooo mad! That was the only sibling that didn't go to work in the family trucking business. I plan to buy this kit as my first kit. Retired after 42 years of trucking.
When I first started driving OTR the company I worked for had all new Transtars, 318 Detroit and a ten speed. Always felt like I was driving a bulding, didn't have much in the way of torgue, but that thing would haul hindend once you got her wound up. Like Chris, she sounded like a high revving Indy car..LOL
The ERTL Blue printer series of truck models far surpassed AMT's with the molding quality and fit/finish. I have an original one of these but will order a new one. I hope Round2 releases/retools, if necessary, other ERTL truck models.
I have a ERTL Buleprinter International Transtar II in my collection. I was going to buy the cast resin Neyway air suspension but now i dont have to. i am waiting for this kit to show up in my maiubox soon.. Happy Building
The reason it's the nicest AMT kit is because even though AMT acquired Ertl, they never produced this kit from it's original release and only because Round 2 released it they had to use the AMT logo instead of the Ertl name due to licensing rights, but growing up, I remember when a $5.00 bill would get you any Ertl kit and Yellow Front Store in Phoenix Arizona always had them on sale for $3.50, mowed alot of yards to buy all the Ertl and AMT truck kits.
As a teenager I had multiples of that kit,it looks the same as it did years ago,I also cut a cab and made a day cab to haul a float with 2 IH 1066 farm tractors,I have ordered a kit from my local hobby shop to do a build with a float and a piece of gear to haul, great job on your build! I can't wait to start working on it 👀
My dad built that kit in the 70s!!! I remember the extreme detail he put into the wheels and chassis 👍lm gonna have to get that ... haven't got a lot in 40+ years.... THANKS 😊
I had the ertl also but I got mine at a flea market I think for bout 5 dollars , it was my first truck kit and I can see how they improved the kit , I love the new tires for this kit. Thumbs up for you awesome bulid version,
I actually first built this COF4070A in 1975: still spoke wheels, 8V-71, and a red plastic cab which I didn't need to paint since I was building one to match a leasing client who had red tractors pulling flatbeds.
When i was a kid in 70s 71 threw 76 my uncle owned trucking company every weekend he go buy us either a tractor semi or cool 1930s car we he let us stay night and build cool models still to this very day. I do same cool video
My Dad had a couple of these, i drove a few then my brother and i bought one. Good times yes. But after remembering how miserable we were in any adverse weather?!? Ya no thanks, there's a reason they don't build these in real life anymore. Not hating on them, just being real & honest. Would i own one as a "hot rod" weekend cruiser? Yes. Would i spend every day in one at work running the midwest? No. Heck i think i'd even turn it into an RV and cruise the US in it, but just not comfortable enough to spend 70 hours a week in it. P.S. i prefer my current work truck, it's a 2024 Volvo 760. Absolutely the most comfortable & QUIET and one of the most powerful trucks Ive ever driven. Semis have come a long way since the days of the old cabovers... thank God. 😂👍🏻💯 P.S.S. Yes i built this model when i was a kid, my sister built the ErtL kit. The international constructor paystar conventional version that had the cement mixer, but i had so many spare parts we made a regular semi tractor out of it. Id like to see the old R model Mack and the Peterbilt 359 and cabover kenworth get brought back too. The ford L 9000 six wheeler. The cabover frieghtliner day cab with CF decals and AMT's double trailer kit would be cool too as well as the gas tanker and ertL extendable flatbed trailer and low boy w/bull dozer. 👍🏻 I used to use vinyl and rubber hoses w/ solid copper wires from the old land line phones to mimic as much of the real trucks as i could since i grew up in a trucking family and eventually wound up being a trucker for life lol. Details matter, just like nitrous oxide plumbing on a ford galaxy under the hood.
Drove one of these ran good got 2 ordered pulled a low boy with a dozer on it every day yours looks sweet mine was red and white ill be watching this over and over
Because of your videos I have about 75 model cars it's only been 2 months, my wife wants to kill me our bedroom looks like hobby lobby this is a crazy addiction LOL
I work for Adams international in Charlotte North Carolina for about 6 years. But I'm definitely going online and ordering that kit today it looks awesome... Really enjoy your videos 😀
Happy birthday Chris! I'm loving this kit - looks like it's going together easier than any truck kit I've attempted, that's for sure! Very intricate details and the end result looks terrific, and I love the extra information on the real truck provided with the instructions as well as the detail photos of the kit.
I have to say .. "Absolutely Well Done!".. I was a kid when that kit was sold under the"ERTL" company label,.. great to see it back out.. can't hardly wait to buy. Thanks !
I'm "that guy" who's original kit was used and spent a lot of time with the Kats at AMT to make sure the kit is even better than the original. It's a great kit!
I am glad you helped out on this kit I've been waiting for years for this kit I did this model back in the 70s and did a fairly good job on it now I have 4 of them on preorder I am going to build a Texaco tanker truck with one and a watkins truck with one of the others I've got the trailer from the 1970s to build for that one
I built the original kit about 20plus years ago and it wasn't to bad but I do remember having some issues, I still have it in display case, I painted blue with yellow stripes... Nice job Chris, I love it... I love that score from 40.00 to 43.20👍
Thank you! I totally appreciate the skills and artistry, but I'll never build one of these; what I love from your videos is seeing how these machines go together and your presentation really highlights that.
I recently repurchased this model , the first one I bought in 1975 and it was moulded in red plastic and the rubber tires were a two piece design . Otherwise I looked it over it was a trip back in time . The real difference was the price the new one with shipping ,exchange cost $97 dollars Canadian and the original only cost me back in 75 was $5 dollars .
That shows how much more it cost to ship kits to Australia! In '75 my Transtar kit was about A$19 which would be about A$85 to A$90 in today's money (roughly US$135 to US$140).
Great cabover truck model, no guess work, the instructions are clear and to the point, good illustration's,showing how the part's fit. And you don't need to be a expert to build this model!
Happy Birthday Chris! Awesome build as usual. I built one of these International kits years ago when they first came out and it turned out nicely even back then. I'll have to buy the reissued kit and give it another whirl.
Thanks R2 for not just repopping a good Ertl kit but making it even better! Any chance of seeing some International conventional tractors to follow? Bday congrats Chris!
My only gripe with the AMT big rig kits are they pretty much only come with a Detroit Diesel engine. They should make a kit with an NTC Cummins or a Caterpillar. In my opinion this kit would be better with a 400 big cam Cummins
Happy Birthday 🎂 Iam definitely picking this kit up after watching you build it they did a wonderful job fixing this kit and as always great job on the video and final result
I still have an Ertl International Transtar II kit in the box complete with the shrink rap covering. Nice to see that "Round 2" went through the trouble to reproduce the original IH Transtar issued by Ertl back in the day.
always wanted this kit back when it was an ertl kit back in the 70s, as soon as amazon gets it down near 50 bucks i will have one ! ertl had some cool kits in the 70s, i had many of them john deere 310 backhoe, international farm tractor and grain trailer, international 4300 semi-tractor, just a few that i had, like to see amt bring back the jd 310 backhoe would look great on my low boy trailer
I don't make any kits myself. But love watching your videos, especially the detail paintwork. Astonishing how every streak of the tiny brush sits perfectly. Respect and greetings from Belgium.

Too funny!!!

I remember building Ertl's 1:25th-scale kit of the International Harvester Transtar II Cabover, the log hauler, amongst others.
The Ertl kits are a big step up from AMT's offerings. I'm really glad they've been rereleased.

I actually first built this COF4070A in 1975: still spoke wheels, 8V-71, and a red plastic cab which I didn't need to paint since I was building one to match a leasing client who had red tractors pulling flatbeds.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!
Happy Birthday Chris
Semis have come a long way since the days of the old cabovers... thank God. 😂👍🏻💯
Now this is more like it. What a great rig.
Fine build and superb finish. Great video thanks for sharing.
Oh, and Happy Birthday!
HAppy B-Day Chris. Thanks for he nice build.
I work for Adams international in Charlotte North Carolina for about 6 years. But I'm definitely going online and ordering that kit today it looks awesome... Really enjoy your videos 😀
Man, I don't even do trucks/cars, but now I want to. Yer Killin me, man
Happy birthday Chris! I'm loving this kit - looks like it's going together easier than any truck kit I've attempted, that's for sure! Very intricate details and the end result looks terrific, and I love the extra information on the real truck provided with the instructions as well as the detail photos of the kit.
Sorry for my lateness on it, but Happy Birthday! I enjoy spending Sunday afternoons watching your stuff. Excellent work.
Glad you enjoy it! Thanks!
I have to say .. "Absolutely Well Done!"..
I was a kid when that kit was sold under the"ERTL" company label,.. great to see it back out.. can't hardly wait to buy. Thanks !
Just purchased one a few days ago. Hope mine turns out half as good as yours! I haven't built a model in many many years. Yours is a beauty!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Thank you for posting this rig!!!
Happy Birthday Funky C! 🎉🎊🎂
How much awesome sauce do we get with this one Chris? 😉😎
I'm "that guy" who's original kit was used and spent a lot of time with the Kats at AMT to make sure the kit is even better than the original. It's a great kit!
Cool, thanks for stopping by!
I love that score from 40.00 to 43.20👍
This was Ertrl kit thats why the Transtar to all the International kits nice build happy birth day .
Happy Birthday Chris!! Awesome kit. Great job, looks real! I like those old Cornbinders.
Happy Birthday and glad you built the kit I ordered two of them and I also have two of the original kits still sealed in the box
I’ve started building my truck and I’m loving it. It’s so much easier then the AMT Freightliner I did.
Happy birthday Wisconsin man!
Happy birthday Chris this was the one I've been waiting for thank you so much great build you did the kit justest
No problem 👍
Great cabover truck model,
no guess work, the instructions are clear and to the point, good illustration's,showing how the part's fit. And you don't need
to be a expert to build this model!
Happy Birthday, Chris. What a nice job on the truck, looking forward to getting mine
That’s great news some of the old kits had parts that didn’t really fit or out of square 👌🇬🇧
Happy birthday Chris , been waiting for this kit since I saw the pre production models , amazing build mate
I was happy to see it pulling the Sunoco tanker. The whole time I was thinking it would be the perfect tractor for the tanker. Very nice job!
At last, one of the few semi's that includes the pogo stick! Very nice build. Thanks for the review. Love when you do the big rig builds.
Thanks man!
Happy birthday matey
I drove one of these from 1978 until 1981 until I bought my 74 white freightliner double bunk Coe with a 3408 cat and a 5 x 3 road ranger transmission
Happy Birthday
I can’t wait until I’m able to get my own.
Happy birthday chris!! Beautiful kit! Great job!!
I never git tried of that acoustical and banjer, steel gituar music! True ghost rider music! Once again, beautiful job on this rig!!
Thank you very much!
Happy birthday and many to come Chris
always wanted this kit back when it was an ertl kit back in the 70s, as soon as amazon gets it down near 50 bucks i will have one ! ertl had some cool kits in the 70s, i had many of them john deere 310 backhoe, international farm tractor and grain trailer, international 4300 semi-tractor, just a few that i had, like to see amt bring back the jd 310 backhoe would look great on my low boy trailer
Awesome build up happy birthday
A lot of attention to detail in this one. Very well done, and more importantly happy birthday Chris!
Happy Birthday 🎉🎁🎈🎂🎊
Chris
Hope you have a great Birthday
Always loved the ERTL IH kits when I was a kid
Probably already been said, but had I not watched you build this, I would have thought it was a diecast model it looks so good.
Thanks a lot Cory!
Happy Birthday Chris and many more! Awesome kit, it turned out great. Looks like another kit to add to my stash! Cheers!!
I don't make any kits myself. But love watching your videos, especially the detail paintwork. Astonishing how every streak of the tiny brush sits perfectly. Respect and greetings from Belgium.
Wow, thank you!
