People praise periphery when they play something melodic like this, but fail to understand the coolness of their chaotic riffs. Saying that they sound ugly or stuff, that sound is intentional. He even describes his riffs as being chaotic at times. Music shouldn't fit into this tiny little box of what sounds good. Prog metal started as a genre bent on being experimental in every way possible, from note choice, the amount of simplicity, or not, playing in odd time signatures, odd keys. And periphery has this really nice mix of order, Beatty and chaos. I like to call it organized chaos. It's quit beautiful and refreshing once you understand it. Classical musicians did the same thing these guys are doing.
People are entitled to their opinions. Though, I'm right there with you. Never understood the kids that thought they were tough because all they listened to was the heaviest shit they could get their hands on. And in the same light never fully understood people who only listened to songs with "catchy" chorus' for them to sing along to. I've learned to respect that most people have a relatively singular music taste. It's mostly (us?) musicians who enjoy and appreciate the eclectic nature of progressive music. Most people listen to music purely for sound, while a musician also takes a moment to appreciate effort and prowess as well. It's how Rolling Stones can pump out an entire album of 12 bar blues in a matter of 6 days and their fans still love it. These fans aren't looking for musicians that work hard writing their music, they just want to hear the sound of the 12 bar blues over and over for the entire album.
Love how Mark explains his thinking and songwriting process in these series!

yes but you can't tell me it's not an amazing song
They put so much thought into single detail, that's what makes Periphery so fun to listen to! :)
"hey guys, Mark from Priffrey here.."
Periphery is that kind of music genius when an every single riff in the song is a masterpiece :b
Periphery....LOVE DAT SHIT
One of the best songs I've heard to date
I got chills when he said Dimebag Darrell
I don't even play guitar but I had to see this broken down because it's so beautiful!
This guitar melody is so beautiful. I love Mark's approach to song writing; melodies with a natural feel originating from chord progressions.
Beautiful song! One of my favorites for sure!
My own personal favorite.... RAGTIME DANDIES!
Watching this at .5x speed makes him sound as high as me trying to learn this. Puts us on the same level
🤣
Marks has to be one of the nicest musos alive.
Nice walk through thanks mate.
It's so damn beautiful, this is what musical frequency is all about..
Some of our species are just in tune with the universe. ❤️
frackin love mark and periphery!!! hope u guys have a lot more of these videos or that u will be bringing him back soon!
Wish you showed the best riff (the one that is played with they keys after the solo, then on guitar)
Love this song, so different for Periphery, but amazing!!
Ever since I heard "The Way The News Goes", I can't remember how "Priestess" goes unless I read the lyrics or something

A second chance at life is all I've dreamed of!..
Does anyone know what Mark's rig is like beyond the Axe Fx? I'm specifically looking for the compressor he's using to get this sound, it sounds great.
I think his pickups play the biggest part in his tone
+Stijn Eikens I would totally get his pups if they were not so overpriced :/
Daniel Malynowsky me too :( also the axe-fx and his guitar :l
+Stijn Eikens I have jake bowens titans in my ibanez rg however, those are fantastic and not too expensive
Just uploaded my own cover of the intro, was a hard one to get down, and i still think it's not perfect haha, lesson helped a lot tho
The link in description looks dead :( was training it -_-
what song is on intro ? any knows ? tnx
