Catholicism Promises Hope of Eternal Life [EVANGELICALS WRONG]

  • Evangelical theologian Wayne Grudem insists that Catholics can never really know whether they are in a state of grace. John MacArthur, boasting that his church is more than half full of ex-Catholics, agrees with Grudem that Catholics can never have assurance of their salvation. R.C. Sproul says the opposite: Catholics have a false sense of assurance.
    So which is it?
    Actually neither.
Catholics, while avoiding the sin of presumption, can have genuine, grace-based hope of eternal life. And all it takes to know this truth is to stop believing what anti-Catholics say about Catholicism and instead look at what the Church actually teaches.

Paul's own teaching and example make clear that he both believed and taught that baptism is essential to salvation. He had established the Church in Corinth, and the people there were baptized as a result (Acts 18:8). He himself was baptized because he had been told what he must do (Acts 9:6), and what he was told was to be baptized and wash away his sins (Acts 22:16). He later taught that baptism is essential to come into Christ and into His death (Rom. 6:3,4; Gal. 3:27). Furthermore, he says here in 1 Corinthians 1:17 that he was sent to preach the gospel. What does the gospel say about baptism? It says that baptism is necessary to salvation (Mark 16:15,16; 1 Peter 3:21). When Peter preached the gospel for the first time on Pentecost, he taught that baptism was necessary for the remission of sins -- Acts 2:38. Paul taught the same gospel, not a different gospel (Gal. 1:8,9). Hence, when Paul preached the gospel, he also preached that baptism is necessary to salvation.

@@larrytischler570 The minister is mistaken. Something is indeed happening at baptism. Please read the beginning of Romans 6 where Paul says, “Don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” This idea that we are made one with Christ through baptism is reiterated by Paul in Colossians 2:12, and in Galatians 3:27 where Paul likens baptism to “being clothed with Christ.”

I’ve been dialoguing with a very strong OSAS/Eternal Security (3-point Calvinist) Pennsylvanian Evangelical, for well over a decade now, sometimes daily and even several times daily, but last week he finally blocked me saying:
“You have a few men telling you what to believe [the magisterium] Christian’s have the Holy Spirit. Looks like our time is coming to a close Edward. The Holy Spirit is pressing me to move to more fertile ground. I’ll give you last word.”
It was: “I’ll keep praying for you Steven.”

False. The doctrine of purgatory is a false doctrine. No such place as purgatory exists. If the Reformers found fault with it, it was because it doesn't exist. As far as your fiction that the Reformers increased peoples' anxiety concerning heaven, it is pure b.s. The Reformers showed people that you don't need a church to save you, that Christ alone, with his completely satisfactory death on the cross, is all you need to gain heaven. Jesus said "No one comes to the Father except through me"(John 14:6).

As Evangelicals, we don't have to worry about whether or not we've somehow not done enough, or participated enough in some sacraments. Or gotten the blessings of any kind of priesthood. We have Jesus' own words and the apostles' teachings as well.
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- not by works, so that no one can boast."
      Ephesians 2:8-9
"I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life." 1 John 5:13
"Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: by whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God." Romans 5:1-2
But don't fool yourselves into thinking that grace means license:
"What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?"
      Romans 6:1-2

To heal us, and to restore us to union with Christ, Our Lord instituted the sacrament of reconciliation which gives us peace.

Perfectly aligns with 1 John 1 (this is the message we have heard and declare unto you...) and admonition from St Paul (work out your own salvation with fear and trembling) and St Peter says Therefore gird up your minds, be sober, set your hope fully upon the grace that is coming to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct; since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” And if you invoke as Father him who judges each one impartially according to his deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile. - 1 Peter 1:13-17

Nope--It is widely agreed that 1 Thessalonians is one of the first books of the New Testament to be written, and the earliest extant Christian text. @_ROMANS_116 About Catholicism being a “false religion,” it’s important to note that the Catholic Church is the oldest Christian tradition and traces its history directly back to Jesus and the Apostles, unlike Protestantism, which can not. Its doctrines are based on the Bible and the teachings of early Church leaders.
Regarding the question of how salvation is attained in the Catholic Church, Catholics believe that salvation is a gift from God that cannot be earned by human efforts. It is received through faith in Jesus Christ and participation in the sacraments, which are seen as channels of God’s grace. The Church teaches that while faith is essential, it must be lived out through love and obedience to God’s commandments.

@getrit3007 “scripture” is a Catholic addition to scripture…
History shows us that Jesus didn't leave us a bible, - the apostles didn't tell us which books belong in the bible, - the church fathers never agreed on the 27 books of the NT through the 4th century and ONLY the 27 books, - not only did they not agree but their individual lists of would-be NT canons were GROWING during this time, growing in numbers of hundreds of “inspired” NT writings.
Therefore, if it wasn't the Catholic/Orthodox church that compiled the 27 books of the NT in the 5th century with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and preserved it by laboriously hand copying them over and over throughout the centuries before the invention of the printing press, the “rule of faith” for many, please tell us who did? We are thankful to the Apostle Paul, chosen by Jesus to spread the Gospel especially to the gentiles. And Jesus is not mistaken : because Paul, more than any other, contributed to ridding Christianity of all useless things for the salvation of man and thus immediately enabled the Church to focus on the essential: GOD IS LOVE. IMO there are deeper presuppositions that need to be engaged i.e. authority to determine the meaning of Scripture, who has the right to teach doctrine...we all know what Scripture "says" and disagree on what it "means". In spite of the inadequacy of stacking up verses against verses, here are some trains of thought that began my journey out of the "once saved always saved"/ Baptist paradigm many years ago. (The article linked at the end of this comment may be especially helpful in addition to books on Soteriology from a Catholic perspective like "Salvation Theology by Joseph Thomas, portions of "The Light of Christ" by Thomas Joseph White, "Salvation " by Michael Patrick Barber, and "Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma" by Ott (who it seems you have read/began to read). I was raised in a nominal Catholic family, I found that most Catholics believe that they were going to heaven because they were baptized in the church! They do not want to talk about Christ and are embarrassed by him. If you question anything in catechism class your kicked out, and no one can adequately explain the convoluted theology. I later became a seventh day Adventist! They were willing to teach me the Bible and lead me to salvation in Christ!

      ------Meaning?
Jesus gave Peter “the keys of the kingdom of heaven,” not the keys to heaven.1 A key was a badge of authority ( Luke 11:52 ), and then as now was used to open doors. Peter used the keys Christ gave him to open the door to the Jews on the Day of Pentecost ( Acts 2 ), to the Samaritans after the preaching of Philip ( Acts 8:14-17 ), and to the Gentiles after the Lord had sent him a vision and an appeal from Cornelius ( Acts 10 ).

I could express my understanding of RC, JW, JM's so-called reformed theology more contemptuously but that would be uncharitable. Let me just ask if i have it right? According to their interpretation, God's Will is "Sovereign" to the point, nothing happens unless God's divine Will has already decreed it? According to JM, god has allowed sin to enter the world so that His "divine Will could be glorified in all its attributes". Really John!?
Moreover, did this dangerous "theology" really start from the following obscene 16th century nonsense?
    ----------
Of course in "reformed" theology, we' re just some brainless puppets acting out some obscenely unjust movie script in sideshow alley for the sole gratification of a 16th century psychopathic immoral monster invented by John Calvin who wrote:
All are NOT created on EQUAL terms, but some are preordained to eternal life, others to eternal damnation; and accordingly, as each has been 🤣created for one or other of these ends, we say that he has been predestined to life or to death" (The INSTITUTES of the Christian Religion, bk. 3, ch. 21, para. 5).
So, how does an advocate of such dangerous theology reconcile it with the God of John 3 16 when they realise it makes God out to be a psychopathic immoral monster? Oh yes, they say, "God didn't love the whole world, just his "elect". 😭

Only if u keep the faith and persevere to the very end will U receive your reward 2 Tim 4.

The Eucharist, also known as Holy Communion or the Lord’s Supper, is a central sacrament in the Catholic Church. It is the practice of receiving the Sacrament of the Eucharist, where Catholics believe they receive the Real Presence of Jesus Christ, body and blood, under the appearances of bread and wine. The Catholic Church draws its understanding of the Eucharist from the words of Jesus Christ at the Last Supper, as recorded in the New Testament (Matthew 26:26-30, Mark 14:22-25, Luke 22:19-20). Jesus explicitly states, “This is My body” and “This cup is the new covenant in My blood” (Luke 22:20). Catholics take these words literally, believing that Jesus instituted the Eucharist as a sacrament of His real presence.

@@approvedofGod I apologize, I should have been more precise. The communion wafer has the feel, taste and nutritional values of a communion host made only of water and wheat. However, during the Mass, when the priest consecrates the communion wafer, it becomes the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ. No one knows how that happens. The miracle is that while the substance and appearance of the communion wafer remains the same it's nature changes to becomes Jesus Christ.

As a Protestant theologian I am emphatically telling all who have Catholic teaching, Christ's sacrifice on the cross to pay for men's sins is inadequate. This is a blasphemous teaching. Catholics are doomed to a life on earth of having NO assurance of eternal life. It's guess work. "I wonder if I've done enough good works to merit heaven ?" The answer is: NO one can merit heaven, no one. Works cannot under any circumstance merit you heaven. The New Testament is very clear on this. Jesus said, " no one comes to the Father except through me."(Jn. 14:6). NO one. Christ alone by faith alone by grace alone. Wherefore, brethren, labor the more, that by good works you may make sure your calling and election." 2 Peter 1:10
Then there's verse Titus 3:14, where Paul says, “Let our people learn to devote themselves to good works, so as to help cases of urgent need.” You see a need, and in love you try to meet it-that's a good work. Good works are the overflow of love for Christ that meets the needs of others.
This is exactly what Paul says in Titus 3:8: “The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to devote themselves to good works.”
"Are you saved?" asks the Fundamentalist. "As the Bible says, I am already saved (Rom. 8:24, Eph. 2:5-8), but I’m also being saved (1 Cor. 1:8, 2 Cor. 2:15, Phil. 2:12), and I have the hope that I will be saved (Rom. 5:9-10, 1 Cor. 3:12-15). Like the apostle Paul I am working out my salvation in fear and trembling (Phil. 2:12), with hopeful confidence in the promises of Christ (Rom. 5:2, 2 Tim. 2:11-13)."
Catholics are doomed to a life on earth of having NO assurance of eternal life. sorry the protestants like you have no life in you and wont be raised on the last day your followers of the disciples who walked away from Christ Jn 666......Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.

So Jesus empowered his ministers to forgive or retain sins. In order for a priest to know whether he is to forgive or retain a sin, he needs to know about the sin and whether we have repented of it. That means we need to go and tell him these things, and so we have the sacrament of confession.
So that’s what you need to do. To come to God and be saved, you need to repent, have faith, and be baptized. If you commit mortal sin, you need to repent, have faith, and go to confession.
      It’s all thoroughly biblical.

Sure there is, it's in the same place in the Holy Bible as "bible", "bible only", "altar call", "sinner's prayer", "once saved, always saved", "trinity", "TimSpangler is so holy, special, and saved bcoz as a survivor of a miracle, therefore TimSpangler is the new Messiah/new type of Pope", "are u saved?", "rapture". Go look it up, it's all there.
