    For those worried about the Elephant drinking chlorine, don't! The typical pool chlorination level of 1-3ppm is about the same as what is used in most water humans drink. Its far too small a dose of chlorine to have any effect on even a tiny Mammal, much less something as large as an Elephant (Whose gut will dilute it very rapidly to the point that even its gut bacteria won't be affected). The "chlorinated" water here is actually probably safer than its average watering hole, as its absent of most pathogens. And if the Chlorine were at a level where there could be an issue, the eye and nose irritation from the smell would keep the elephant (And the human) away, shock chlorinated pools are not pleasant to be around. (But even they wouldn't be toxic in a lethal manner...the big guy would have some GI issues for a few days, though.)

      Nope. The stray cats around my apt complex drink from our pool all the time. They won't even drink tap water we give them. I think their kidneys can filter that out.

      You'd jumped in and hoped the elephant will follow suit? So, when a wild elephant is next to a small human being, competing for the same watering hole, will be like, mive bitch, get out of the way, and crush you to death? That's what you're hoping for?

    Question: is the water treated in anyway?

    • @robertb7230
      @robertb7230 5 років тому +32

      Normal pool chlorination (About 1-3ppm) is the same level used in most water treatment. Its not toxic. At that dilution its only really able to kill microorganisms, and even then that's because the water is standing and it has a long effect time. It wouldn't have any effect on even a little mammal, much less one as large and with such a robust digestive system--in fact the treated water is probably safer than most watering holes the big guy drinks from. (Which is why we chlorinate most of our drinking water!)

    • @jekku4688
      @jekku4688 5 років тому +5

      pretty sure it is...most static pools need a water treatment of some type, unless it's salt water (which they probably would not drink anyway). But if they're thirsty enough, they'll drink pool water. But where else can a big one-tusker go for a drink AND a bath, eh? :-) So fantastic!

      @@SkelNeldory I'm assuming your comment was meant to be sarcastic. Much of the prime land (that which gets water on a regular basis, not flooded once a year, and is very fertile) is being taken over as farmland. Many of these farms (and, yes, cities and highways) have cut off the natural migration pathways for elephants, thereby, in essence, "boxing" them in, and creating confrontations with the farmers since they want to migrate through and/or eat their crops. The rainy season happens once a year, if they're lucky. Elephant migrations can be hundreds of miles...that should tell you how scarce fresh water sources are. Not ALL of South Africa is conducive to supporting elephant life.

      @@emilieguillon-equitation421 Evidently, not everyone understands that. And that's a good question. I'm sure there are some spots with enough of a water table it can be tapped into by use of a well...if not, it probably has to be trucked in. Either way, if it's meant for swimming, there most certainly will be chlorine in it....even with the newer salt-based pool systems....so it can't be the best thing for the elephants.

If you were careful it could be managed., for one to see so much water sitting out there for no use other than humans Floating kind of just pisses me off. But it did provide a drink.

    That is so cool just to have an elephant walk up in your backyard and get a drink of water. I hope that that pull wasn't chlorinated water.

    0:44 That head shake is elephant for "I don't like this situation". The elephant must choose between exposing itself to potentially lethal humans and getting a long drink on a hot day.

    I wonder how many times he has hit the pool? Imagine the size of the diving board if he wanted to take a dip. To the person that put this up if you have anymore or a up date if he's taken the plunge I bet a lot of folks that would love another video.

    Why are these idiots allowing this animal to drink chlorinated pool water? Couldn't they at least set out some fresh water for them to drink? smh

    When these pachyderms drink chlorinated water from these pools then their intestinal biomes could be killed off causing all kinds of physiological problems.
