- This tracker did exactly the right thing by remaining calm while an elephant properly sniffed him out. Chances are it would have ended very differently had he panicked.
The brave one here is the elephant, protecting his herd and facing the most vicious animal on the planet alone.

I worked as a safari guide for 10 years, got very close to elephants. There was physical contact there, tracker was totally cool. The body language of the elephant non-aggressive. Still a bit dangerous because if things change there is no time to respond. Having said that those big bulls often become very habituated, and in areas where they are not poached or hunted they become very relaxed and predictable. Awesome experience!!!

The men perfectly understood the body language of the elephant. The elephant was simply curious and didn't consider the men and their vehicle as a threat. Or else it would be snoring with widespread ears and tail raised. Even so, the men did a great job in keeping their cool and staying calm.

A mock charge can be mostly differentiated by a relaxed trunk, when the trunk is curled better pray that your tour guide has something loud to scare the elephant away.

The guides had the discipline and knowledge necessary to read the behaviors. The approaching elephant was demonstrating curiosity behavior so all they had to do was calmly allow it to act inquisitively.

As the male is checking them out you can see a juvenile cross behind him. The male was checking out the humans to make sure there was no threat to the juvenile. He sensed no threat so moseyed on his way. If he had sensed threat he would have called out an alarm long b4 his approach & more elephants would have come charging. Yes some may have been killed but the humans would have been the ones left worse off. More that likely these men were nature reserve employees and the elephants are quite use to them. They are an amazing, beautiful & very intelligent animal.

My mom used to be a travel agent and we had the opportunity to go to South Africa (I’m an American), and we got to do some pretty cool things due to how rich her boss was. One of them was a private safari, and we actually had elephants come up to our safari car and stick their trunks into the vehicle. They were really pleasant and very evidently just wanted some form of snack. Very gentle creatures!

Depends on the reserve and the state of the elephants. Sounds like you were at Addo elephant park, their elephants are friendlier unless you have citrus (then you risk getting attacked). I would not risk that at the Kruger National Park. There have been cars crushed when people try to get too close to the elephants. The rangers become familiar with the body language and nature of the different herds, so they would know when it is safe. And the elephants are also more familiar with the safari cars as well, so less risk of spooking them.
@@christinevanzyl3106 my guy, Kruger elephants scare me, my profile pic is actually of a lion from Kruger that was just walking down the road back in 2012. Kruger used to be much nicer back then for seeing this stuff but when I went recently it was hard to spot anything exquisite

I don’t think it’s anything magical. The animal is huge and could snap you in half or easily crush you. This awareness triggers the release of many chemicals in the brain like adrenaline and heightens your senses making the moment seem longer and more intense.

Edwin elephants are herbivores. Like you donkey.
They use the roof of their mouths to help smell stuff. He is sucking air into his trunk then blowing it into his mouth to smell better. He does this several times. Has nothing to do with wanting food.
