WE once talked about Jeff Loomis ... what an incredible shredder, but also his solos are unbelievably fast and precise. I have the Zero ... album and Jeff Loomis played all guitars and bass, he only had a drummer with him. The whole album is such a pleasure for all friends of guitar music.🤘
Jeff Loomis and Warrel Dane (RIP) were the heart of NEVERMORE, one of the best metal bands at the beginning of the 2000s with their great mix of thrash-, power- and progressive metal. They were a great live band, as I could see in 2006 at the Rock Hard Festival ... they blew us away. They not only released their epic This Godless Endeavour album, but also recorded one of the best metal DVDs of the 2000s - The Year Of The Voyager - filmed in the "Zeche Bochum" (Germany), a temple for all rock and metal bands, which don't fill the real big halls. It's more than 2 hours full of energy, but not only by the band, but also of the crowd. I can't really remember a german crowd being so enthusiastic and singing along all the time. You should check songs like Next in line, Enemies of Reality, The river dragon has come, Inside four walls, The heart collector, Born, This Godless Endeavour. And they recorded a cover of Sound of Silence, which makes the Disturbed version sound like a pop song 😆
PS: I wrote this before I read what Prof Tony has written 😄

Their version of "Sounds of Silence" may grate many people, but they made it their own and the music makes the original lyrics "darker", especially with Warrel's darker voice (yet melodic voice). Its easily in my Top 10 covers of all time, but I'll add that they didn't do the cover to get a "hit", they did it because they loved the original, and didn't want to create a "re-do".
      - "Which makes the Disturbed version sound like a pop song 😆" - hehe, no kidding! Right on the money Rudi \m/.

No doubt that boy can play the guitar. Didn’t know what to expect. I liked it, but I must confess I’m drawn more to the Jazz fusion side. I’m just a sucker for that backbeat and I’m more of a groove hog than a speed dog. Great to hear this and as always ready for more. Nice to have a channel that delivers such great variety. Thanks Nick and Tony.

I wonder what folks will think of the band he was featured in, *Nevermore.* Which had many sides to their brand of Dark Prog Metal, and vocals that were different than most.

Jason Becker is actually one of Jeff Loomis biggest inspirations, his own words, you mentioning Jason Becker is absolutely *spot on* and Jeff Loomis actually has a nice Perpetual Burn cover, but even though Jeff Loomis is my favorite guitar player (what brought me here) i gotta say the best Perpetual Burn cover out there *for me* is Gus Drax, what i don't like about Gus Drax is that you get sore fingertips just watching him bend strings like rubber bands and tendinitis watching him doing impossible splits with his fingers, it's not just technique, the guy won the genetic lottery too

Pretty interesting…I’m not much of a metal guy (love 70’s hard rock and metal but after around the 80’s or so there are only certain acts that appeal) and was not much for the whole shredding style, but this is still an impressive example of playing talent.

I grew up around great players, but Jeff Loomis is by far the best AND his tone is amazing. He can play Jason Becker perfect, a different player versus everyone I've heard today.

    WOW! *ME-TALLL With NICK!!!!!!*
I'm "first" (well as I was writing, Jibaro beat me to it!). Do I blame its a start of a weekend? Where is everyone???
    We need more Metalheads 😄!!!
So Jeff Loomis originally came from *Nevermore* and I imagine he was in his early 20's when he started with the veterans from the band *Sanctuary,* which was the late-great vocalist "Warrel Dane" & Bassist "Jim Sheppard". And also drummer extraordinaire and fellow rookie "Van Williams" (who is a MACHINE and highly underrated) who formed the new band in 1994.
Nevermore is interesting how their sound developed, they started as a Proggie Thrash band. I wasn't too keen on Jeff's "Tone" on the debut album, but he was very skilled and some of the solos are outrageous. By their "Ep" (after the debut), he found _his_ unique and heavier tone. As the albums progressed, they attained a darker sound, and some were very "Death Metal" in style, but with a _melodic voice,_ and at times very baritone (see "Peter Murphy") as Warrel matured, he lost his falsetto voice, but gained a very unique voice in Metal. They have various _mood swings_ in their music (from Shred, Thrash, Dark Prog Metal, Melodic tracks, moody and like Opeth, all those elements in 1 track), but also VERY Heavy "Ballads" for lack of a better word. They were excellent live as well, which I got to see 3 tours. *Opeth* opened for Nevermore on their "Blackwater Park" album (Nevermore's "Dead Heart in a Dead World Tour"), which was their 1st time in the West Coast, which was an outstanding show for both.
He has a great sense of melody (why he now fits with *Arch Enemy* from Sweden) and at times, a hint of Marty Friedman (as you just pointed out), but with a heavier edge and palm-muted chugging (which Marty doesn't utilize, in _his_ unique style).
I believe he (Jeff) got to meet Jason Becker at his home. You'll have to hear Nevermore and how he plays rhythm to Warrel's vocals. He may have gotten a 7 - 8 string guitar by the 5th album.
You'll be interested to read his story Nick, and who he got to meet when he was only "16", which got him started to a bright future: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Loomis
    - Thank you Nick! Glad you liked it. I need to catch-up on your reactions, and excited to see Sting and "The Police" being reacted to! Those are some great albums/tracks from both (seen Sting 2 times, he puts on a great show).
BTW - From "Lalu"; Vivian Lalu, plays keyboards for vocalist Ray Alder's (Fates Warning) & drummer Mark Zonder's (ex-FW) new band *A - Z* which you heard from one of my marathons along with Lexi (with "Mystic Rhythms" by Rush).

Thought the same thing Nick. Jeff has always reminded me of Jason Becker or what Jason Becker would have evolved into.
