The dystopia Neil is describing here is our own world, circa 2007 when the Snakes and Arrows album dropped. At least in my opinion, the song is about the contrast between the hopeful vision of the 2000s that they grew up with in the 50s and 60s, and the reality of what that decade ended up being. There are other songs off that album that get at similar ideas
Glad you guys enjoyed this one! Snakes and Arrows is probably my favorite Rush album, mainly thanks to Neil's exceptional lyrics and subject matter
Armor and Sword, The Main Monkey Business, and Hope are some other songs if you want to dig more into S+A. It's their 2nd to last album, and one that's very overlooked imo
    Thanks again boys!

    • @mattbaker5757

Rush is my favorite band/group. Triumph is my second favorite. It just worked out that way, nothing to do with both being Canadian or both being only a trio (Triumph did bring in a fourth member guitarist/singer later on to back-up Rik Emmit). Those facts are just coincidence, though I was impressed at the fact that both bands put out so much sound with just 3 members, it might have had about a 1-2% contribution to the reasons they became my two favorite bands.
My top ten favorite bands represent rock from the 60's through the 90's. For the most part (at 56 years old), I stopped discovering new bands after the 20th century, but I still listened to new material from twentieth century bands that were still around, and started discovering other bands from the 20th century I had heard of or didn't know much about before. It just seemed to me, that post 20th century, modern music took a huge nose dive in every way possible musically. There are a few exceptions, very few, that aren't rick n roll, like the A Capella group HOME FREE.

Rush returned to their heavier roots on their later albums.
Snakes and Arrows was from 2007.
    Stick it out
    Headlog Flight
    The Way the wind blows
are a few more of their later heavier songs.
Far cry is about how the world didn't turn out like the vision we had in the 60's. The chorus has a bit of a 60's feel.
    I love their heavier vibe!

Rush released the album 'Snakes & Arrows' in 2007... 'Far cry' was the 1st single... However, the heaviest Rush song is (in my opinion): 'One little victory'... from their 2002 comeback album 'Vapor trails'... which is the heaviest Rush album in their catalog.
I think Neil Peart wrote 'Far cry' regarding the aftermath of his 2 yr journey on his motorbike after losing his family... and seeing the world as it is... In 1996, Peart was riding high on the success of Rush... In 1998, he had lost everything:
"One day I feel I'm on top of the world, And the next it's falling in on me... I can get back on... I can get back on...
One day I feel I'm ahead of the wheel, And the next it's rolling over me...I can get back on... I can get back on..."
It's no secret that the lyrics to Rush's 2002 album 'Vapor trails' were entirely about Neil Peart's 2 yr journey on the road... healing from the loss of his wife and daughter... He admitted that he heard a lot of his anger and confusion on that record... The lyrics to songs like 'Vapor trail'... 'Ceiling unlimited' ... 'Peaceable kingdom' ... 'Earthshine'... 'One little victory'... captured his experiences during the worst times in his life.
Rush never got political but Neil Peart did write the songs - "Where the wind blows" ... 'The larger bowl'... 'Bravest face'... on the album 'Snakes & Arrows' about his views of the world. He wrote the lyrics to the Rush song 'Totem' ... about his view on religions.

Some have regarded "The Trees" as a metaphor for Canada - U.S. relations, with the oak trees representing the U.S. and the maple trees representing Canada; additionally, the lyrics of "Distant Early Warning" reflect the Cold War tensions of the mid 1980s, and the title refers to the Distant Early Warning Line, a defensive perimeter that was established in the Canadian Arctic to warn us of a Soviet invasion.

The Tragically Hip was probably biggest Canadian band in Canada itself. Had a 35 year run (1984-2018) peaking in the early 90’s. Sang many great song with truly Canadian themes and stories. Performed final tour after lead singer Gord Downey was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and final show in their hometown of Kingston was epic with all of Canada watching coast to coast to coast. A few tears were definitely shed in Canada that day and again when he died the next year. Similarly like RUSH, all 5 members in the band meet and went to same high school together in Kingston, Ontario

I had absolutely no time at all for Rush through the 70s, mainly down to what I thought of as Geddy's thin shriek. From 'Spirit of Radio' and 'Moving Pictures', which I jammed along with when a housemate brought it home newly released, starting on side 2, hitting a wall and taking a breath at YYZ, I've only grown in appreciation of their versatility, musicianship and supreme listenability. Effing 🔥🔥🔥, boyz. Deuces.

Rush's last three albums were among the most aggressive work in their catalog. Especially their last, Clockwork Angels, a Steam-punk inspired epic about a dystopic world controlled by austere, faceless time keepers, measuring out and tracking tbe minutes and seconds of every life, while the human levels of society below are subject to a restless, gypsy-like existence in a constant state of hazard and flux..
It is one of their most aggressive and progressive albums and it was the climactic impeccable finish that only Rush could deliver. You MUST check it out, they ended their long career in an explosive, thunderous finale..

I saw the video on Headbanger's Ball and honestly thought Rush was a metal band 😂 Went to a record store and bought the previous album (they didn't have Counterparts) and remember being very confused.
