@@disturbin2701 Search for "Super Mario Bros Hitboxes Exposed" here on UA-cam -- At around 3:50 in that video, you'll see where a hammer goes through Mario without killing him. This is because the game was designed to favor the player by having the hitboxes smaller than the sprites. There are also examples in that video where Mario seems to go through Piranha Plants without getting hurt, again because of the smaller hitboxes compared to the sprites.
EDIT: There's an even better video by Bismuth titled "How is this speedrun possible? Super Mario Bros. World Record Explained" -- It goes over a bunch of the specific details about why certain enemies don't do damage the way you'd expect, again due to hitboxes. It's a video about an older world record, but the information about hitboxes is still relevant here.
If you want a more up-to-date video, check out another video by Bismuth, "Why 4:54 is the perfect speedrun - Super Mario Bros. World Record Speedrun Explained" -- This one covers the (relatively) newer strategies employed in a previous record by Niftski.
