Man, am I ever glad I watched your video (several times) prior to ordering and receiving my Chinese laser cutter/engraver! You were right on the mark with the fan/blower. Although my wires were soldered, the casing/insulation was simply pushed around the connection. I re-soldered and used shrink wrap covering. After I got the water system set up (used distilled water) I plugged it in, turned it on and........nothing. DOA. After looking around, I found that a terminal had fallen off of the on/off switch. Reconnected and turned it on and it homed X/Y just fine. Much to my surprise, I did not need to adjust my laser at all. Caught 1 break. My next challenge was that the Corel Draw 4x (yes, Corel Draw) would only install in Chinese and the website that had a downloadable version set off my virus software like crazy. Finally found LaserDRW 3 hidden inside of a folder labeled in Chinese. I would have had no idea where to begin to troubleshoot any of this if you had not put out such a fine video. Now on to learn the UI in the software. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
hey, since you done such a wonderful video, I am going to give you a tip, There is a hole on the bottom of the case that is there for a purpose, if you take the plate where you place the item to be engraved (four screws) and put the printer on four bricks, place the laser head in front of the hole, you can use is as a bench saw by pressing the test button, and cut big pieces of anything, Investigate and get back to me I did it and it works, I am to lazy to make a video

Hi again after updating the comments list a reading a lot of the comments i understand we are not using same software. Your Videos are clear and precise. This with easy to follow instructions, much kudos. Maybe another reader with my set up can help as well. Again thanks for the great video.
for anyone watching this in 2020, for a cleaner edge, you see how the text is kind of wobbly ? Well there should be a setting called X Swing, or something to do with "back and forth" and disabling that option will usually make the cutting process slower, but also the edge clearer, in the video the laser is cutting back and forth on the X axis, so both going there and coming back, if the machine is not 100% perfectly aligned, and the stepper motors perfectly in sync ( which definitely isn't on these machines) then it will introduce a slight jitter to the engraving making it look more blurry and wavy. if you disable it it will only cut once on each pass, so only going to there and not on the way back, this will slow down your engraving, but in my experience results in much cleaner edges and much straighter lines. also to avoid burning the acrylic as shown in the video, you can simply get some thin paper tape, and tape over what you are going to engrave, the burning will be on the tape, and the laser will easily cut trough the tape when engraving (maybe on lower power machines you can up the power a bit to compensate) I cover both acrylic and wood with that tape and the results are usually much better than sanding / buffing it is.
Great video. Definitely wear glasses if you have the door open operating the laser (can anyone say instant blindness). Also, the smoke from most of this stuff contains chemical nasties so make sure to vent well (unless you want cancer). Don't forget the fire extinguisher. You won't have time to go buy one if you need it. Make sure it is grounded (high voltage AC and water don't mix well). Other than that, lasers are cool and fun. I have about 50 lasers where I work and have used them all (up to 1000 watts). This one was more of a toy for home.
thank you so much for sharing. this has been so helpful. Im going to be using this same chinese laser cutter for the first time and was clueless on all of this.
The mirror adjustment seems to be very easy in your video, but I find it much harder in real life, as you have to find the right angle of mirrors considering 3 dimentions, not just 2 dimentions, as shown in your drawing. In other words I find it hard to make sure that the laser ray is always parallel to the floor. Still yours is the best video I found about adjusting the mirrors. Thank you for taking the time to make it.
Excellent video, thank you very much. You covered many things I woudn't have thought about. My cutter didn't even come with a manual. We're thinking of converting it to run on RAMPS 1.4.
Checked my wiring - all is fine but glad you showed the dangerous wiring on yours. and glad I checked mine ( just received). The device id and model number would've hit me tommorow but you fixed all that and I did likewise. Thanks - near 4 years ago I saw Mine is very similar but the extractor is the same situation only with proper wiring connections.! Tak for vid (på engelsk - !) :-)
It is very cool that the Chinese can make advanced technology very cheap. In that way I am impressed. But of course you have to do a lot of fine adjustments and cant really expect to much of it. Thanks for the view.
I like you 3D printer from scratch project and I really like this pretty well explained laser cutter setup and review. I would really like to see more projects with laser cutter as well as 3D printer. More on the setup side like speed, power and other settings.
Thanks for your review, I have been looking to purchase one of these for a while and this has helped me to decide. I will get one. Thanks again - very helpful.
A glass-laser tube like yours will have a finite life, used or not. The epoxied-on end-mirrors will let in oxygen over time, which will dilute the gas-mixture, rendering you with a tube that does not ignite anymore (The gas mixture in the tube is below atmospheric pressure). This happens over a set amount of time, so there is no "saving" the tube unfortunately. This is also a reason for not buing a spare tube and putting it on the shelf - when you may need it, it will be dead.
Awsome review and explanation of adjustments, testing, etc.... I have been thinking about getting one of these exact lasers and this was super helpful! Thanks!!

Nice machine and excellent video, One question. I suppose it cuts balsawood sheets for model airplanes. Am I correct? Do you think it could cut up to 1 cm think balsa sheets?
Got mine. Came damaged. Vendor settled for $200 cash back. I had to machine a new carriage from scratch and do a lot of repair work, but it's aligned and cutting well. Need some help on the software if anyone can help. LaserDrw works (although has some BIG bugs), but I can't get the Corel Laser Draw to work. After loading it, it recognizes the USB key, then informs me that the software is NOT installed. Tried reloading several ways, after a reload and restart, It seems to be looking for an internet file that has been taken down. I'd appreciate it if anyone can help. I'll be posting on the Google K40 page as well. Thanks, and thanks again EC for a great review. You didn't steer me wrong! I'll probably be installing a standard breakout board and using Mach 3, but was hoping to use as is for a while. Thanks Scott
Thank you for such an informative video, these things come with almost NO instructions... I just purchased one and I'm having a heak of a time aligning my laser.. Your video is the best step by step on how to do that ( thanks again!) BUT unfortunately the problem in having is when it's aligned on shot one at the Y, when I move it up towards the laser, it's a little high, then when I adjust that to center, when I move it back down I'm low.. It's like I'm going in circles!! Any tips would be SOO appreciated sir. Thank you again.
+L b Hmm, if it does not hit center, it could be the laser tube that is either tilted to one side (or up / down) or offset from the XY plane. You should still be able to get it to hit the same spot, but maybe offset a bit from center. It still runs, with small offset from center but of course it's best to get it perfectly in center :) I think mine is about 1 - 2 mm off from center, but the beam always hits the same spot.

This is a great video. Thank you. I'm ready to buy one for my classroom and wonder how long the lens may last on the cutting head? I've read that the smoke generated while the laser operates can bake onto the main focal lens... Thanks!

Hey Thanks for the video, It was very usefull, Do you know what`s the optimal distance of the cutting head to whatever object you want to cut? thanks !
Good in-depth review. Where did you buy the laser, and how much did it cost you (+ shipping, taxes etc.) ? Also, you can safely clean acrylic parts with Isopropyl alcohol. Alcohol, or "Sprit" as we call it in Denmark is partly denatured with Acetone, and that is what makes it unsuitable for cleaning acrylic.
***** Thanks :) I got it bought it on eBay, $ 600 for the cutter, $ 200 shipping, +25% VAT = $ 1000 (US) Acrylic gets weird when cut on the laser, it creates unevenness in the tension at the edges of the cut, so for some reason almost all solvents will make small cracks along the edges, even though the solvents do not desolve the acrylic. The tension can be equalized by tempering the acrylic in the oven afterwards, I might try that actually :)
RE protective film. I find it necessary to apply a protective film in engraving operations, to protect the adjacent material surface. Acrylic clouds, and mdf/ply gets burnt black sticky glue deposits. Polishing/sanding is additional labour to be avoided, especially if the materials start pristine, so why not use a protective film/paper? were you unable to engrave though the protective film? While not an optimal mask material, I find that engraving through cello tape works OK.
I'm looking at these lasers to engrave stone. I've been told 40w will be enough power. I'd like to ask if you can remove the bottom to set the machine directly on a piece of stone. Or maybe cut a hole out of the bottom.... what do you think?

Well there should be a setting called X Swing, or something to do with "back and forth" and disabling that option will usually make the cutting process slower, but also the edge clearer,

if you disable it it will only cut once on each pass, so only going to there and not on the way back, this will slow down your engraving, but in my experience results in much cleaner edges and much straighter lines.

This isn’t entirely true, if you keep the laser under 25mA it will extend the life significantly as long as you have a tube that is made properly

Thanks for a great video.
I actually purchased one of these laser cutters because of this video :)
rigfix You are welcome ! :)
I hope you will enjoy it.. ! I still think mine was a good investment :)
great video...wondering if it would engrave on the back of a mirror so i could etch the out lines out.....thank you great video
Thank you for the video!!! Can this laser cut fabrics? I'm looking for the one to cut Lycra
Nice video, Old Gregg! Bailiey's, watercolors and manginas all around!
Thank You for Your Video I found it very informative and it answer many question I had about these cheap chinese laser units
Thanks
Scott
Who was the seller? So we 're more careful when buying :)

Thank you! Very easy to understand and helpful
It still runs, with small offset from center but of course it's best to get it perfectly in center :) I think mine is about 1 - 2 mm off from center, but the beam always hits the same spot.
good video! how should i know if the CO2 deplete?
Some great tips and information, this was quite helpful!
+StormWaltz73 Thanks
thanks , i need this video,. if you use little bit less engrave thickness, cutting is more fast ? and engrave precision is better ?
Excellent and informative video, great job, thank you!
Looking into getting one of these, this was very helpful.
Hej ... Fin Video ... Kan du som sådan anbefale maskinen til en lille produktion af acryl logos ?

xianglei shi, Ive just bought one off ebay. Sorry you are to late.
Very entertaining instructional. Great job.
I love this guy's dry sense of humour - "don't forget to switch the laser off before you start poking around in there so it doesn't cut your fingers off"
Thank you very much for the video very helpful. I have just purchased one to trial out.
Thanks

This is a great video. Thank you. I'm ready to buy one for my classroom and wonder how long the lens may last on the cutting head? I've read that the smoke generated while the laser operates can bake onto the main focal lens... Thanks!
Hmm. I don't know actually, sorry :/ Looking at mine, I can a tiny bit of contamination on the mirrors but none on the lens yet. But it haven't been used that much yet..
Tour Best video to date! Thanks for showing the cutter.
Great video answered alot of my questions but 1.
Can this machine engrave painted metals like aluminum, or would i need the 50w verison or whole different machine ?
Hello Scout Recon , This is Coco , come from JuLong laser .
The laser engrving cutting machine only could engrave or cut the non-metal materials .
If you want to marking the metal materials , you could choice the fiber laser marking machine .
This is the link of the fiber laser machine .Check it in time please .

***** Thanks :) I got it bought it on eBay, $ 600 for the cutter, $ 200
shipping, +25% VAT = $ 1000 (US) Acrylic gets weird when cut on the
laser, it creates unevenness in the tension at the edges of the cut, so
for some reason almost all solvents will make small cracks along the
edges, even though the solvents do not desolve the acrylic. The
tension can be equalized by tempering the acrylic in the oven
afterwards, I might try that actually :)
While not an optimal mask material, I find that engraving through cello tape works OK.
reminds me of them first printers. took me back to the -80s.
I'm looking at these lasers to engrave stone. I've been told 40w will be enough power. I'd like to ask if you can remove the bottom to set the machine directly on a piece of stone. Or maybe cut a hole out of the bottom.... what do you think?
Excellent walk through. Thanks! I'm sold, I want one.
