My daily driver is a 1985 Xtracab. You are correct. The space is nice but getting stuff in and out is a hassle. (I know mine is smaller than this)
The fold flat passenger seat on the ‘24 will help, but you will have to walk around the truck to do it.

The XtraCab is kind of a miss for me. I really like that they're offering the extra space and 2-doors, and rear seats are useless to me, but there's no easy access now because of the lack of clamshells like with the Access Cab. My first truck was an extended cab with the clamshell doors. I rarely put people in the back, but I regularly would swing the rear doors out to toss in my stuff. For my work and lifestyle, it was literally the perfect cab configuration.
Also, I wish they'd give us bench seats as an option. I'm tired of car buyers influencing interior designs. Benches are best, particularly for trucks... Way more comfort and versatility with bench seating.

What a major design FAIL! That looked like such a pain in the ass reaching over the seat to access the storage in the rear. Hopefully they bring back the suicide doors because that is my favorite model. I was seriously considering upgrading from my gen 2 to the new 2024 access cab but I don't think I could live with that.
I use the back for nicer gear that I don't want in the bed like tools, my bow/archery gear, hunting optics, nicer camping gear, or anything I want protected in the cab. Lifting a tool box, cooler, or gear totes over that seat would drive me crazy.

like it was said this is a a pre production model "the only one that exists". Hopefully they will change the rear doors. The big guy had a heck of a time reaching for that seat handle, and as for the "functional area", a cooler a toolbox good luck getting that past that seat. Removing the rear seats was a great idea ,but its far from perfect. Ask anyone with a extended cab small pickup the one thing people want is a flat area to put day to day items ie: groceries, trip to the hardware store, ect. and keep it from sliding all over the place on plastic with the first turn. (But I'm sure toyota will offer a rubber mat to fix that problem they created $$$$). Great idea for a pickup, different from what we have been given a choice as of late. with any hope the reviewers and public will let Toyota know what they like and what they don't . Just give us the rear doors for the love of God. Its like were going back to the 1990's .

It's something they can improve on in the next few years on refreshes, but only if this style is popular enough that they don't kill off the XtraCab entirely.

This was almost the perfect 2 wheel drive mid size truck. I love everything about it including the really well thought out rear compartment behind the seats. But doing away with the access doors really turns it into a real pain to use, especially with the increased ride height of the PreRunner. Because in order to get back there you are going to have to rest your chest on the hard plastic of the folded seat to be able to reach or provide the leverage needed to place or retrieve objects back there. Toyota say's they did it for safety? I don't think the average Tacoma buyer cares that much about the little bit of added safety that provides compared to the inconvenience price we have to pay for the loss of access. Welding the tailgate shut too would add greatly to the rigidity and "safety" of the truck. But who would want that. What a shame.

I think they failed with the xtracab prerunner. It should have been an access cab with the storage options as reaching over the seat all the time to reach something in the back is a PITA especially a child seat as I have an extended cab nissan hardbody. Hell there is even a video of the chief engineer having trouble to reach something in the back. Also the rear suspension was a mistake with the leaf springs being under the axel as that limits the lift options and will probably only be used to lower the truck like what other people did with the Nissan hardbody RWD. The prerunner with be terrible for off roading. They can say that they moved to xtracab for crash tests, but I bet it is to save cost and the MSRP will still be more expensive than previous years for the prerunner. Also they should have left the push start as an option. If I ever do get a 4th gen I will probably get a crew cab and delete the back seats to get what I wanted out of the prerunner.

Maybe if the front seat folded and flipped up to give more room to the back but just looking at the guy struggling to get to the back was enough for me.
