Mark, This is another one of your superb videos. I just used this video, and there are two tips I’d add: First, when you cut your first cut “against the pin” of each workpiece, it helps if you secure the workpiece to the backer/jig with a clamp. I found that I couldn’t hold my workpiece secure enough with my hands. Once you can straddle the pin, you don't need a clamp; hands work just fine for holding the workpiece securely. Second, on the backer it helps to draw a dozen or so reference lines. The lines provide a visual reference, so when you hold your workpiece to the backer you can see you’re at 90 degrees. I hope these make sense.
I have always been interested in woodworking but I’ve never had the patience (or the talent). Thanks for the video and the finished product looks great.
I am going to try this project as my first Box as a Neophyte woodworker. When I get gone - it looks 1/2 as good as your example I will give it to my son as a Christmas gift - since he is a knife collector too. Thanks for this and wish me luck.
Marc, it is quite hard to watch a video where the phrase “I just farted” appears briefly, then explain to my 3 year old why fart jokes aren’t funny, while I laugh hysterically. Thank you for compromising my parenting skills. In other news, this video had the right balance of humor and info. Very well balanced.
Please tell me that "Bubinga" poster is available somewhere! Even if only in PDF form. I feel like I need to have one in my shop. Or maybe hanging over my bed.
Amazing craftsmanship! Thanks for the video! When drilling holes for a hinge mortise that has a back wall, I never use a self-centering bit. I'll use an awl to offset the hole slightly towards the back of the mortise. That way, the hinge will never pull away from the back wall. Got this idea from a FWW article, and it has always worked for me.
Duluth Trading stuff is Awesome! I've had some of their shirts for pushing 15 years and they're still just fine. Pants wear well, undies are super comfortable, socks too.
Being a novice in comparison to your experience I really enjoyed this build. It included a lot of detail that I had always wondered about but hadn't looked into for lack of experience.
Lovely looking box. I'm going to be making a 3 string guitar soon but don't want to use a cigar box. So perfect timing with your tapered sides. Thanks for the inspiration.
One of the best finger joint demos I have seen, thank you. A quick question though, if you did not have a table saw (I don’t!), how would you have approached this please? I have a Kapex and a router, but the pieces were too long for the Kapex. Thanks.
Wasn't sure if I wanted to see a knife box build. Glad I did. I liked the styling with the beveled sides and lid. I made the woodsmith box with a similar design. Your Daluth bit was uncomfortable and hate the plugs but get it.
Hey! Quick question! Do you have thoughts on Rubio mono coat for furniture? I’m not sure what it is. Just trying to finish a maple chair that doesn’t darken it too much without going the water based poly route.
I've been wearing Duluth for 4 or 5 years now and I like them. When I was on a road trip I stopped by their first store in Duluth the town of MN. Pretty cool place, and they have a lot of cool little fun things too like knives and things for your truck and what not like seat covers so it's not just clothes. They also make things for the lady workers and ladies in general out there too, 1 stop shopping.
I have been collecting knives for about 5 years now. Not actively just one or so a year. Benchmade is where it's at. If you get a chance check out the triage, it's been my favorite overall, so far I have two of those and I think I am just going to get a third this year.
Nice! I'm curious... did you get any tear out using your box joint jig? I use the William Ng method as well, but I consistently have to place a backer board behind my stock to keep the back end clean. It works, but it's a pain in the butt.
Great video. I have just begun to practice woodworking due to lockdown and I am thankful for the knowledge. Very funny as well. I enjoyed it very much.
Creativity + hilarity = Marc Spagnuolo~! Great looking box (Bubinga), Marc, and I never tire of your sense of humor. "I just farted"...awesome~! This is just the project idea I was looking for with Christmas coming up. Got a knife monger in the family that will love it~! I'll refer to my very own, autographed copy of "Essential Joinery" (Woooo Hooo~!) for the details you mentioned. Thanks as always~!
I enjoyed the video and appreciated the mention of the scrap usage during the pertinent portions of the build. The insight provided is valuable, I think, even though I don't need it. I don't need it because I should probably be building things entirely out of scrap two times before I try with real wood. :-)
Hi whisperer Have u ever made a drawer base cabinet where the drawers open both ways. I'm going to make a center console for my cargo van and I want the drawers to open from both front and back. If u have a video making please send me the link. Your work is absolutely awesome. You are one of the best. I'm subscribed now...thanks for all the tips. They changed my habits...
And just about the point where I was going to ask "Why would someone spend so much time making a knife case?" -- You answered it! So never mind. LOL I enjoyed watching you make the case!
watching this during lunch break at office and seriously paying attention to box joints coming together, when "I just farted" shows up and I am laughing uncontrollably. Thanks for the laugh Marc!
First time viewer! Found your book on Amazon and that lead me to your channel. Great stuff and now I own your book and subscribing to your channel. Your Duluth ad was too funny. Easy to follow instructions. What brand of poly glue are you using/recommending? Thanks Alan
Great video. Great fun. Cheers. Gosh, do all Duluth's models have good lookin' butts? May have to check what they have to offer so!! Love the name of the wood there. Reminded me of Sheldon from Big Bang! Well done. Great job on that box. The ebony was stunning.
A dang bevel... And here I went and bought a new tiny chisel to make individual cutouts for each of the hinge tabs.. Granted it looks like magic when you open the box and the hinges just float into the wood. Why do I always make it so hard on myself.. The box turned out great. Might build one myself as I also have a collection of knives in my sock drawer.
I always enjoy your videos. Question - I have seen several, what appears to be, Back To The Future items in the background. I am curious if there is more than a “I just enjoy the movies” reason. I enjoy the BTTF movies a lot and am jealous of the tag.
I think I saw at least one Kershaw knife in there... It needs a couple of rows in the back for your flashlight collection too.. and perhaps a USB-C connector to charge them up?
Well cannot go wrong with the 940-1 superb steel and carbon fiber--->>> whats not to like. BTW the Kershaw Leek and Blur were my first folders that spawned the love for folders for me. At this point I own almost exclusively CRK folders.

Woodworking AND knives? We must be brothers by different mothers! ❤
Youre one of the few woodworkers that I’ll watch pretty much anything you put out. I learn something new every time! Thanks for the awesome content!
Had to go back and confirm the message on the test piece at 4:28, nice! Also, greetings from Duluth, MN. Love that you are repping that brand.

If your 3 year old can read the phrase written on a joint in a video that quickly, I'd say you're parenting skills are just fine
@@cbrowning762 I was thinking the same thing
Please tell me that "Bubinga" poster is available somewhere! Even if only in PDF form. I feel like I need to have one in my shop. Or maybe hanging over my bed.
Long time Duluth customer....5 STAR OUTFITTER...babinga sure has nice depth/warmth etc. Used in pool cues alot...and now you gotta case...
My knife collection is jealous now.....thanks a lot!
Bubinga wood. For woodworker it's like have gold. Mark you are so rich. Thanks for sharing your project.

Every year we see more and more of the real wood whisperer. 2020 is about to be lit.
This comment aged like milk, rofl.
I'm glad that you are posting videos again
Me too. Not sure what I do with my time but clearly I don't spend enough time making videos. :)
The Wood Whisperer I also glad that you still do comedy just like the olden days when you did the queen sized bed and the king in his castle shop tour
Being a novice in comparison to your experience I really enjoyed this build. It included a lot of detail that I had always wondered about but hadn't looked into for lack of experience.

Lovely job Marc. I enjoyed the finger joint jig explanation.
This video has everything! Once I am finished setting up my table saw this will be a top priority project.
Very nice project. I like it Would be nice to see if such a case is possible for modern military knives.
Fantastic! These tapered sides make a huge difference! Beautiful !!!👍👍👍
Wasn't sure if I wanted to see a knife box build. Glad I did. I liked the styling with the beveled sides and lid. I made the woodsmith box with a similar design. Your Daluth bit was uncomfortable and hate the plugs but get it.
A beautiful box. I was just thinking of how good it would be for storing watches in when you mentioned it.
Beautifully! Nice to watch the process

Love the humor and the project...equally!
this is beautiful... I love the angles on the outside

Love it, Marc. Those two woods really play well together. Great work.
You sir, are magic. well done.

Very nice! Love the incremental measurements done in decimals...🤔😂 that's practically metric
What a gorgeous box! Love the angles and the ebony accent.
I knew that was a Kershaw Blur .5 seconds into the video. My favorite knife by far. I will be making this box lol.
The bevel sides of the box are awesome 👍
Love the humor in your videos.
Nice he gave William ng credit. He is great. I wish William still made videos
“Eyes up here boys” 😂😂😂😂
Man, you are awesome! I love your channel!

Awesome stuff Marc! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Well done Sir! Love the last line!
Beautiful box, Marc! The "Eyes up here boys" scene had me laughing my ass off haha.
Also watches? Never thought of that. My son has several. This would make a great gift for him.
This is why I love my incra ibox, super fast set up,have you ever tried it?
Yes, I own one.
Nice work. Lovely. I'd love to hear more about the collection. I saw a Leek, Kershaw, Benchmade (my favorite). What all do you have there?
"Don't forget to clock your screws."
G*d damn right!

Box is beautiful!
You got a like for making your coworker uncomfortable by resting the leg on a bench. 😂😂😂
That was hilarious! 🤣
Great little project.
How did you adjust the kerf size of the Incra 5000 sled to match the 1/4 dado blade you are using?
Sharp looking case for some nice pointy things. Greetings from Germany
And just about the point where I was going to ask "Why would someone spend so much time making a knife case?" -- You answered it! So never mind. LOL I enjoyed watching you make the case!

Look up Chris Reeve Sebenza. I see you like quality as it shows in your work. Well the Sebenza is a folder by which all others are compared to.
Beautiful case

loved seeing a white balance card on a table saw. subscribbed!
Awesome! Loving the Mayor Goldie Wilson flyer too :)

Fantastic build! I'm a big fan of the Kershaws you're packin'. I've gotta couple myself. =D
Nice box, Marc! greetings from Turkey🤝👋
Great work as per usual! What kind of clock do you have mounted on your wall at the end?
Dumb question, but what is the white pen/marker that you're using?
What type of drillbit is being used at the 14:00 mark? Never seen anything that looks like that...
Nice case, love the humor. I'm guessing that was a shoutout to Sheldon.
Kershaw Ken Onion. My favorite pocket knife from my wife. Nice
This is great as you can modify the insert for watches or fountain pens.
Very nice case. I need to build something similar for my watch collection.
I’m a big knife guy and paused the video to see what you had 😂 hell yeah got a 940
LOL, me too
Great project Mark! At 4:40, you use what looks like a white pen. Where did you get it?
Great looking box
Such a cool build. Lots of little skills to take away from this one.
Love this video, I feel like your videos have gotten much better with slightly more jokes in them than previous ones. Great work Mark as always 😁
I always enjoy your videos. Question - I have seen several, what appears to be, Back To The Future items in the background. I am curious if there is more than a “I just enjoy the movies” reason. I enjoy the BTTF movies a lot and am jealous of the tag.
Nope, just a fan. :)
Very cool box! Congrats!!!
That came out Awesome!
Beautiful.
Aww no Ganzo Firebird knives? I see you have some good and expensive ones, but I love a good beater knife, you know?
That is awesome!! I was curious where you got that chalk mechanical pencil, I can never seem to find one that fine. Thanks for all the great videos
Try these amzn.to/2CsFtOr
Nice display!!!
What’s in your knife collection? Ant Medfords?
Awesome video.
I think I saw at least one Kershaw knife in there...
It needs a couple of rows in the back for your flashlight collection too.. and perhaps a USB-C connector to charge them up?
would love to see the plans for this box as it looks great
U just watched the plans
Can you add a link to the white pencils you use?
leaving me both impressed and aroused.
Aroused?
Haha! I'm wearing those exact Duluth pants as I sit on my couch watching this. And my butt looks similarly fantastic while doing it.
As always, pure entertainment.
The pen turning kids need a nice place to store their collections too! Maybe different risers tho?
Love the dance moves!
Gorgeous [the box!] *shutting-up*
Is it going to be on the free site?
