    'She is a quitter, but i guess we're both quitting now' ... Wow this song is full of meaning -- so heart-breaking ...

      No. Leave it alone and enjoy the music. Their lives are not your personal soap opera.

      I saw her
      Drink it down 'till it's gone

      Oh well,

      Aubz seems pretty clear to me. One of her songs after band split was the good woman song... the story is pretty obvious. What an incredible duo they were.

    I will forever love the Civil Wars and the two albums they blessed us with but I have also come to realize John Paul really made the Civil Wars. I adore Joy's beautiful voice and miss hearing them together but I will forever love John's music far more. His voice and lyrics alone make a genre of its own. As long as he has a guitar, his voice can take you anywhere.

      I feel the same. They sounded incredible together but his solo songs are beautiful. He just makes absolute magic with that voice and that guitar. Every song, every cover, is pure gold.

    This song talks to me. It's about an old flame that never really dies, even when you really want it go away. "Those old butterflies are eating me alive". If my interpretation is correct and it's really about the feeling of being in love with someone who is maybe out of your reach or isn't good for you so you stay away, then JP found a brilliant way to put it.

    John Paul shares his deep perspective, he needs not layer music or vocals, he is up front and writing from a hidden space. Im always so impressed and taken away. Im thrilled to of gotten a ticket for Denver on May 10, 2017...What a privlidge to spend an evening with this master of music

    Ice, water
    Drink it down 'till it's gone
    I saw her
    Drink it down 'till it's gone
    Oh well,
    There's always a second time around
    So bitter
    In my heart and in my mouth
    She's a quitter
    But I guess we're both quitters now
    Oh well,
    There's always a second time around
    It was hard to breathe
    She was holding me
    Now she's gone and I can't get no air
    Those old butterflies they haven't died
    'Cause they're eating me alive in there
    Please, black leaf
    Show me where you took my love
    Please, hurry
    This whole world ain't enough
    Oh well,
    There's always a second time around
    Oh well,
    There's always a second time around.

    He was on eTown Radio last night and I fell in love with his music all over again. The one little obscure note in this song is just why he is so great.

    • @Trollificusv2
      @Trollificusv2 7 років тому +2

      Not just finding that one half-off note, but having the good taste to feature the damn thing, using it to put people on notice: "Not just a derpy folk tune, folks.". Dude's an excellent guitar player, fine lyricist, has a fantastic voice, but I think, above all, he has a gift for melody. Put it all together (and it don't hurt to look a lot like Johnny Depp), and you've got one remarkable artist.
      And yes, even with this fine album...I still want, someday, more from JP and Joy...sad.

    JPW sounds better w/out Joy. No offense to Joy. She is a great singer. I just like JPW's songwriting better out of the Civil Wars. I think this album is better than anything the CW's did!

    • @sreb5048
      @sreb5048 7 років тому +11

      no he doesn't. And their writing together was way more complex then "i hope I die" or some of his other songs off of this album. He always said lyrics were not his strong side. This song is an exception. Only reason in my opinion is because it must be written about her.

    • @Trollificusv2
      @Trollificusv2 6 років тому +9

      I really love JPW but I have to agree. Their...synergy applied to both songwriting and vocals, and was unique. I'm one who NEVER cares about the personal lives of performers, just their art...except for this one time and I just can't get over it. Damn it!

    • @iamsultana
      @iamsultana 4 роки тому +5

      @@sreb5048 I could not be more in agreement with you. I love JPW and Joy so much and wish them amazing musical careers. They sound wonderful on their own. However... It's impossible not to compare with something that already exists. Like you said, CW songs had much more intricate, mystical and haunting lyrics. I'm missing this part in JPW's work, even though I do think that his voice sounds perfect, and he puts so much feeling into his performances. Then there's Joy. She just released an incredible album, which really says a lot about her song writing skills. But if you watch her perform these songs live, she looks quite lost. She looks like someone who lost an arm or a leg, and is still learning to live without it.
