Make a care pack for your homeward journey. I always stuff a spare bag to leave in the boot with items such as an energy drink, chocolate and crisps. Also in there will be warm, comfortable clothes (dry socks, jogging bottoms etc) and a wash kit & towel on the off chance you can blag a shower at nearby campsite. It can make a pleasant difference to the drive home should the weather turn out crap!
Paul, I know this is a year late; but, your treeless hill provides beautiful views and a real test of tents and kit. I sure enjoy the commentary too. It’s nice when you kinda think out loud about your kit. It is entertaining and informative. Wish I could be there, with you. Maybe we could talk gear, enjoy your views, good eats and some warm tea. Thank you… from an old vet, retired in the US foothills of the Smoky Mountains. That was quite the blow! I think it might have been a good time to stay in the tent. Breaking down and popping smoke in that S#!T storm took courage…
Wow, the change in the weather 😳 I’m up in the Lakes for a small cycling tour end of April and hope the weather is a little more gentle on me! Should be as I’ll be camping at campsites at the lower levels, not getting battered on the tops! Great video, the quality of your films is so good Mr Messner, and I always enjoy seeing what you’ve brought along for supper. The dehydrated meal packets have their place but your meal ideas are so inspiring and better value for those of us watching the pennies. Thank you for sharing and taking us along 🙂👍🏻
you tould need storm pegs up there , stronger than tent pegs . made of strong lightweight plastic that you screw into the ground , if the ground is soft enough , backed up with tent pegs .
Had exactly the same wether experience last week in the Fairfield horseshoe. Glorious on day 1 and woke up to fog/wind and rain. 😂 Love the look of the northern lite 2. Clever use of poles and the space is brilliant for that pack weight.
I’ve used the microwave rice many times in the same way as you but after lugging a couple of packets around for 30 miles and not even eating them 2 weeks ago in the Cairngorms, I’m going to try adding dehydrated rice to my dinner. I’ve been using Huel dinners for a year now and they are cheaper and just as nutritious as the expensive freeze dried meals. I hope the dehydrated rice works out. Enjoyed the video!
Think the regular rice would be a good bet there. And can save some time and gas too. For anyone thinking of giving it a try, I add rice, add water (2x volume of reg rice or 1.5x for basmati, ya know.. the posh in hills touch), bring to boil, turn off and let it steep/rest (in a cozy/wrapped in a fleece) for 20 minutes. If its quite cold, maybe let it simmer for 10 minutes then 10 minutes rest - ymwv. (At home I do 8 minutes simmer, 8 minutes rest, release extra steam, and perfect rice every time). ATB
Great video as always. I just bought the Northernlite 2. Camping in it next weekend. Bought it off the back of the review video and this video. Keep it up.
This tent is on my current short list along with its budget sibling, the Panacea, and the Abisko Lite 2. Yes big disparity in prices but I’ve got some overtime in so a bit of extra cash. Vern 1 was on the list but the recent pole breakages are putting me off at the moment.
It’s a great bit of kit. We had two full days nearly in the Lake District last week without any cellular signal is good for keeping in contact with the family and for emergency purposes.
comparing the Northern Lite to the Panacea does the NL being Silylon I suppose it packs down a lot less when you remove the poles from the pack. I value the reduced volume of silnylon tents over strict weight
Looks a cracking shelter that mate and what a spot to test it out on. It’s a nice gentle walk up there and the views are stunning. Hope you’re well pal and we need another catch up soon. Take care mate and catch you soon
Nice to see the comments back on Paul. Great to see you out on a solo camp. It looks like you have your mojo back. Great camp and test for the tent. Really like the look of it but out of our price range (unless Alex will let me sell the MSR!).
This tent seemed to do extremely well under those conditions. With this in mind, id love to know why you've moved on to other tents and why this one wasn't a keeper?
Loved that. I took my 'kids' camping last weekend. Got down to 2 deg C. That's nothing in comparison to what you just went through! Good on you! Did I hear you say that you were looking at a roof tent?
lol u know ur doing it right when u take ur slippers with you .... not watched one of you vids in a while m8, loved this one great editing and a nice flow to watch cheers ..... 166k subs get in there buddy 👍
I thought I was the only one who ate rice and mackerel together like this. My wife hates it 😂 try adding a bit of Nandos or any other peri peri sauce into it, I normally add it to the tomato one. Great with a garlic and herb pitta too. Great watch also ❤
I really liked the Optimus crux lite build quality but one major flaw let it down. The imprecise simmer control that had a mind of it's own. Unless constantly monitored and adjusted this would turn the flame down and off altogether. I should have paid attention to the reviews that indicated this as a common problem.
Nice camp... im sure you get recommendations all the time but if I may, I highly recommend the tinned mackeral in hot chilli sauce from tesco (the orange one) not too spicy but by far the best ive tried. I was at the outdoor expo on the saturday, was a great day & got a few items from my want list which was good.
Hi Paul, love your videos, im looking at getting the pioneer 2 or northern lite 2, just wondering if youve had any issues with the rain water running onto the inner tent of the fly sheet, while the doors been open, kind regards, keep exploring mate😁👍👍
Hi Paul. Another great video, I've just subscribed to os map's for the year as my eyes are starting to let me down with my paper map's. Do you plot your routes and download to off line map's before you venture out?I only ask as signal has let me down the first time I've used it. I'm not well up with apps because I choose not to be.
You 100% on the rain coming in Paul? I've just sent mine back as water was coming in where the Trekking pole fits. Also feel that they could have put a rain gutter on the flap that covers the zip. I opened the door after the rain stopped and all the water ran down the tent onto the groundsheet and into the inner. Like the weight to space ratio but not impressed really. Hoping I've just had a one off dud and the replacement is fine.
Goodness I don’t know how we did it in the seventies camping wild on a shoestring could not afford this gear now. Or maybe we just did it on what we could afford back then. I got our groups gear from a company called ultimate they did rejects or not sure the term but their gear was good even though.
Hi Paul - can you do a review of the zoleo and your garmin in reach (and any other GPS tracking devices you have) and give us your thoughts on the pros and cons of them? Thanks
This might be a silly question..though I'll ask it anyway. Where do you go to the toilet up there? I've always wondered this. As I'm used to camping/hiking in Australia. Surely its not a case of just digging a hole like it is here. Seems very exposed and a lot more used than the bush here. Asking for a friend.
Hi Paul, the tent looks a winner but all depends on length for me, as when met at the expo (twins pic) I am a tad tall - what is the curly wire thing on your trekking pole?
Walking with the weight of a backpack, is going to put stress on your joints, fact. And as you've said, your a chubby guy which adds to this. Not having a go as I'm indifferent to how people live their lives. Just saying that if people do this on a regular basis, you can expect problems later in life.

Beautiful, just beautiful. No not you, the scenery! and the tent.
Hahahaha
Paul just gets it. I love this channel.
Great experience with useful comments.
I guess I liked these wild camping videos better than I remembered - - it was nice to go back and see one again after a year.
Thanks for watching again. Hoping to be out again in the next week however there’s a storm brewing again. I do much prefer nicer weather these days 😂

Awesome tent! Love everything about it, Terra Nova nailed it big time! Hope I get it one day. All the best Paul.

This really made me want to head out in't't hills!!!
Love your videos, mate. Keep them coming. They’ve inspired me to go camping in the Lakes this summer.
Great video, thanks very much. The GoPro did really well with the sound in that wind, you have a good setup.
Awesome video, feel inspired. Proper good job filming the tent take down. 👍

Always a breath of fresh air - magic 👌
We went up there yesterday and then climbed down your ascent route Paul - it was a bugger on the knees and ankles!
Well that was a wild ride. Beautiful views though as always in the lakes. thanks
Poles great touch@!! Thanks..
Loved this from start to finish. 👌
Great video as always. I just bought the Northernlite 2. Camping in it next weekend. Bought it off the back of the review video and this video. Keep it up.
Enjoy these videos , be good to see wild camping without all the flash gear that most people can’t afford.
" This is brutal........ but I love it....". : ) Even more fun in a blizzard !
Loved it paul , keeping it simple , can't beat a bit of wind and rain on the face 😂 enjoyed everything, stay safe 👍
Awesome! Thank you for sharing.

Was great to meet you both
Great video as always, Paul, thanks!
😮!It’s very beautiful !
Loving the camera on the gate shot - v effective 😊
Rice and Mackerel, one of my favourites
Like the ping locator device.
It’s a great bit of kit. We had two full days nearly in the Lake District last week without any cellular signal is good for keeping in contact with the family and for emergency purposes.
Top job, seeing this vid just inspires to head out again, looks a good tent too 😊
Thanks for the video Paul, look after those knees mate.
Great videos Paul keep going 👍
Awsome tent.

3 ancient roman tent pegs 👍😂 And in 2000 years someone finds your lost ones! 😉
This tent seemed to do extremely well under those conditions.
With this in mind, id love to know why you've moved on to other tents and why this one wasn't a keeper?
Your tent stood up really well in that weather, Paul 😁🙋♀️ great bit of kit. Beautiful scenery up there!
It should stand well for £600🤣
Paul what's the HH

Like your down to earth approach. No self-indulgent patronising sermons. Just tell it as it is.
Cheers John.
I just boil the bag in water and cooks the rice through nicely

Love the video...but I have to say...that dinner ..rice and mackrel.... looked grim...🤣
Class mate love the vids
Great video Paul
thats a monster of a filter paul
Great video
19:00 why these tents are so loud?
Hi Paul, love your videos, im looking at getting the pioneer 2 or northern lite 2, just wondering if youve had any issues with the rain water running onto the inner tent of the fly sheet, while the doors been open, kind regards, keep exploring mate😁👍👍
Paul, brilliant video as always so thanks for that and the superb advice. What’s the lamp you use inside the tent? Ta

To be honest that doesn't look like fun to me more of a nightmare but certainly an adventure 😮
Are you currently on the trail?
You 100% on the rain coming in Paul? I've just sent mine back as water was coming in where the Trekking pole fits. Also feel that they could have put a rain gutter on the flap that covers the zip. Yes Paul! Did you try the limited edition tinned Katsu Mackerel fillets they had? What model are those trousers from Mountain Equipment?
Hi Paul - can you do a review of the zoleo and your garmin in reach (and any other GPS tracking devices you have) and give us your thoughts on the pros and cons of them? Thanks
I no longer have the garmin.
Do you only have the zoleo now?
@@summitupmark5615 that’s correct
Good video again, what make of water pump did you use and have you made a video?
Looks like a M S R to me
What speeds were the winds overnight and in the morn
30:29 _"...that's if it's still here"_
😕
How heavy was your pack matey.?
May I ask why you pumped the water instead of just dipping the bottle in?
Does the pump have a filter?
I’ve had many wonderful moments up there but what increasingly bugs me - Britain doesn’t really do forests, what a pity.
Which part of Britain have you been visiting?
There's LOADS of forest, you just need to know where to look!
Yep! Hard to find places to hang my hammock. 🌲
@@jonboy2804 I'm guessing KEILDER FOREST and the NEW FOREST must be REALLY hard to find, 🙄
13% of the uk is covered by Forest areas. That’s disgusting.
@@hezzy2813 you do realise how small the UK is right…

what water purifier pump were you using ?
Msr. I wouldn’t recommend for personal use. Too expensive
Hi Paul great videos, what size backpack would you use for 4-7 days hiking?
Here I see my next pitch, lat and long?
Anyone know what the little hanging light is? Or recommend something?
Good video keep them coming but seriously dude sort your dinner out 😂🤢
Where is this park ?
First Class Act.
have you ever been moved on when set up camp that high up by a park ranger??
Hi Paul, the tent looks a winner but all depends on length for me, as when met at the expo (twins pic) I am a tad tall - what is the curly wire thing on your trekking pole?
Might be the same as the orange ones he describes in this vid: ua-cam.com/video/GvZXNe30H6o/v-deo.html
What are you even doing with your life if you leave 3 tent stakes behind
Do you delete some comments???
Seems very odd a video gets 35k views but only 12 comments???
I’m sure he does from time to time
Comments were disabled for a while, maybe folks just don't realise they're open again
Brutal, sadomasochism.

Love the channel but not so much eating/crunching on camera! 😩
Why camp out so exposed 😂
