Being born in '73, I have one question. Why can't there be musicians with this level of passion and talent around today? Or at least why must they be such a minority? Music has never been about who sells the most records, it is all about expression, and conveying your thoughts and feelings to your audience. These guys remind what it is like to believe in magic again. Truly amazing.
Listening to "Songs from the wood" this evening, and I still loving it as much as I did when it first came out. Thank you Ian Anderson for many, many years of listening pleasure!
I was 14 years old when I seen my first concert in Cincinnati, Ohio it was JETHRO TULL it's safe to say that I could not have chosen a better band to see than JETHRO TULL. ROCK ON 🪈🪈
I don't think I'll ever stop loving Tull. Ian Anderson and company are some of the most underrated musicians, performers and lyricists ever to grace the stage.
.,..man , the musicianship is astounding. ....Ian says." OK Lads...here we go....." and one take.... AFTER that big swig o' whatever it was... HAAA..! ..amazing
Two great masterpieces of modern music history. The song and the band! Just to imagine these sounds before making them real... It's plain ingenius. One of my all time favorite Top 5 bands if not the number 1.
Ian Anderson is truly talented and gifted musician and singer.....coupled with the rest of Jethro Tull...that music instills in me a sense of wonder, grace, beauty and passion. I adore Jethro Tull....I always have and I always will. They remain my truest pleasure. ♥️
just.....wow. grew up with him on the Radio. didn't particularly buy his records, but...ending up a musician myself, and had ears on, during this phase of generational brilliance, got a healthy dose of this incredible bands offerings, for say, the last 40 years. this peice here, is nothing short of stunning. Ian is a better singer, and entertainer, than i ever gave him credit for. this is True Art and Music. no "Formats'...no "Formulas'... pure unleashed talent and shining brilliance
As far as I know they've always used backing tracks for this song's harmonies. If you listen you can hear that they are the studio tracks with Ian singing all the parts. They pretend to sing them for show, but you can't blame them as its an incredibly tricky part. You can also see Barrie mime the flute part at 1:28, he himself poking fun at this very point because: 1. Barrie doesn't play flute, 2. it's two flute lines harmonized, and 3. He's not playing into a mic. These guys had a good sense of humor and were not above making fun of themselves.
I had a drink with Ian Anderson at The Woodlands Resort in Wilkes Barre, PA. I happened to stop in at the Bar at 3PM to have a quick Brew and i couldnt beleive my eyes when i saw Ian at the Bar. I spend an hour talking about different things,,,I think he appreciated that i didnt ask any music questions, Something i will never forget.
Holy shit! This is perfection!. What an incredible band. I wish I could have seen them live at this point in time. When you see John Glascock in these older concerts you really appreciate what he ment to the band both in musicianship and stage presence. Thanks for posting!
Saw Jethro Tull last summer and they kicked ass. Sometimes I wish I was 40 years old by now... I wish I had the chance to watch all the greats when they were not so "Old to R&R"...You know?
Whether you like or don't like Jethro Tull, they're one of the few bands that never sold out, produced quality music. Much to be respected in the music world
I've seen this on UA-cam many times before, but right now, after watching it again, I was about to clap my hands wildly as the song ended, realizing all of a sudden that I'm at home in front of the computer. It is just such a powerful performance. I can't think of any other song that can bring so much joy to one's dreary evening.
Think this track shows Ian on his highest point as a musician, performer and songwriter! Is such a unique song, there's nothing in the world thats similar to this!
Unfortunately, I was too young to see this, my favourite line up and my favourite era of Tull. I discovered them in 1979 and didn't get to see a concert until 1982.
Bought this album from iTunes on the weekend for $7.99 AUD - 10 songs!!!! All the songs individually added up to over $20 worth - so went for the whole album, and glad that I did - beautiful, mesmerising and exciting. Haven't stopped listening to it.
I saw Tull in their "Songs from the Wood" tour right after the album came out. This vid is just what I remember from the concert! It was FANTASTIC, as is the album. One of my favorites. Altogether, I've seen them four times. Consummate musicians, and I truly think Ian Anderson is a genius.
Saw them a couple of times. Fantastic shows and Ian's a stellar showman! got to meet Ian (won a radio contest) before 1 show & he was a shockingly regular guy and really nice. Also disarmingly intelligent. But mostly a cool, funny guy. GREAT CLIP! Thanks for sharing!
Gives me the chills this is so good. The music, poetry, performance and heck, creativity, are all amazing - and with a sense of humor. Plus they dance across a number of musical genres effortlessly. To top it off Ian smacks those cymbals at the end with superior alacrity. You just can't beat this. Thanks to whomever posted this one.
Astounding musicianship, unparalleled showmanship AND they look like they're having a fabulous time doing it. They simply don't make 'em like this any more...
GRACIAS VERDADERAMENTE GRACIAS POR NO OLVIDARSE DE LOS MEJORES MUSICOS QUE HA DADO iNGLATERRA MARAVILLOSO ! ME TRANSPORTA JUSTO AL BOSQUE Y PODE ESCUCHAR LAS CANCIONES DEL BOSQUE
Incredible live performance. I was very much in my hippy, pot smoking days when this came out. This album gave us reason to walk in the woods and burn 'em.
I finally saw Ian Anderson perform around 1987 at the Universal Ampitheatre here in Los Angeles. Jethro Tull opened with 'Songs from the Wood' and it was a memorable show.
One of the best videos of the guys on UA-cam, in my opinion. Still browsing through some of them though. I'm a younger guy who's really into Jethro Tull, and will have my first opportunity to see them live in Los Angeles at the end of this summer. Can't wait for it!
Thanks to your video, I got my old vinyl Tull albums out and set them up on my bookcase so I could admire the great artwork they always put on their albums. Still have my old stereo set up intact, but I usually listen to cds now. Thanks so much for this wonderful blast from the past. Great vid!
I was in Bonn of Germany three years ago, visitng good friends, they took us for a long walk to the local forest, in Friesdorf, all along i had this song i my mind and soul I felt part of ii, I was soooo happy then!!
they play every kind of music, blues, folk, rock, hard rock.He is a great musician.I am waiting to see them in Athens again! Lycabetus waiting for your fluite Mr Ian Anderson!!! :)
Although, I've always thought of this music as from their "baroque" period, whatever it is I was lucky enough to see them twice in my small home town of Mobile, AL. Mr. Anderson had a nice young lady in a French maid's outfit to come out and dust off his cod piece. Both shows were the best I've had the good fortune to see! Thank you for the great video.
Can't not still love these guys! Epic performances from all of them. No 'also rans' in this band! Listening to this in the car on the way home today, again. :¬)
Thanks for clearing that up for me. Sad really as he had the most unique voices I've ever heard. I'm still a huge fan and Tull is still my #1 group of all time.
This line up was an amazing group and talent is so very evident! Thank you ...Thank you for posting this! This is better than the album's version!! Looking forward to seeing Ian in October for Thick as a Brick II...!
every man in the band is absolute a genius. you cannot perform a tull song from the beggining to the end without hours and days of learning. but what about singing 10 songs from tull? they are and will remain the best!
I never really thought about them doing this live before. That is incredible that they could do songs like this one live rather than have to lip synch it. This is true and absolute talent. I have always loved Jethro Tull and while several of their other albums are close, this was my favorite.
Frankly, as I Yank, you wouldn't think me to be a big Tull fan, but from my youth, they were my favorites! From 'This Was', with the first line up of musicians, Ian had me with his mix of English history, and rock and roll eccentricity, to 'Heavy Horses' (the last LP I recall purchasing...), I've been a fan. Seen them four times in concerts over the years. The only problem is that all my recordings are in eight track format. I'm almost 54 years old, now. Thanks for posting a piece of my youth.
Tull has always been famous for their live performances. I am not surprised at all at the brilliant performance here. Love Jethro Tull. Have Crest of a Knave Tattoo. =)
Saw this tour, too. What an incredible performance and this is a jewel of a video, with great (rare) quality audio to boot! This was the second tour of Tull's that I saw...1979 I think, with 1975's Warchild the first. My bro went to the Aqualung tour and Thick as a brick as well as the 1971 Passion Play tour. I bought the coat and the boots and took up guitar... Ian's the greatest rock songwriter of all time (next to John Lennon)...
Barrie absolutely kicks ass on drums here. Remarkable composition--you hear something new every time you listen. There's just nothing else in modern music quite like this. Sheer brilliance.
Great comment, EXCEPT...'BARRIE' as you called him, is Martin Barre, the black and white striped -pant legged guitarist of 40+ years (!!!) service in the band... The energetic drummer is AMAZING, but that's Barriemore Barlow...the 2nd, and arguably, the 'best fit' drummer that Jethro Tull ever had...and obviously, he and ALL of the players in that lineup were multi-instrument talented. The drummer?, momentarily playing flute? (and glockenspiel)... I know Martin Barre also played 'live' marimba, saxophone, and I believe, flute. Amazing!!! Missed!!! So Grateful!!!
OMG! Holy Crap!! I LOVE the end - with the cymbals & how the camera pans behind the band so we can see the hall. Awesome considering his voice was feeling rough... sounds great to me :-)

Absolutely agree...
Like many things Western in govt, society & culture , popular music has greatly declined!
It's a gift from God
Where has this been all my life? He's a mad faun goblin prince, leaking music and mayhem like a stoned Pan.
perfect description
You are very articulate.
A tip : watch series on flixzone. I've been using it for watching lots of of movies these days.
@Kieran Thomas definitely, I've been using Flixzone for months myself :)
Listening to "Songs from the wood" this evening, and I still loving it as much as I did when it first came out. Thank you Ian Anderson for many, many years of listening pleasure!

Amazing harmonies. Such a tight band. Perfectly in sync.
Hehe
I don't think I'll ever stop loving Tull. Ian Anderson and company are some of the most underrated musicians, performers and lyricists ever to grace the stage.
At 70 I still enjoy the music. I miss the stage theatrics.
Top notch musicians, the lot of them.
.,..man , the musicianship is astounding. ....Ian says." OK Lads...here we go....." and one take.... AFTER that big swig o' whatever it was... HAAA..! ..amazing
Ian your a legend to me, your music is extra ordinairy good.A big fan from you from Holland. God bless you Anderson.
Two great masterpieces of modern music history. The song and the band!
Just to imagine these sounds before making them real... It's plain ingenius.
One of my all time favorite Top 5 bands if not the number 1.

Jethro Tull - just one word, fantastic! Ian Anderson, fully alive, fully human, totally unique - what a talent!
One of my favorite tull albums. ian anderson is beautifull.
Great song played beautifully by this great band. Love it. They were really something live. Glad I was able to see them.
Saw this same concert @ Santa Monica Civic. Best concert I've still ever been to.
Songs like this just are so impressive live, oh my god
Awesomeness! Just wonderful. What a composer and what a band. :)
this is absolutely unbelievable how they pull this song off live. incredible musicianship.

That was flippin' PHENOMENAL. ..those guys were truly great together .
Nicely done live harmonies!
As far as I know they've always used backing tracks for this song's harmonies.

I saw this lovely girl one day and this song popped into my head and was so sweet. Doesn't get any better than that.
I had a drink with Ian Anderson at The Woodlands Resort in Wilkes Barre, PA. I happened to stop in at the Bar at 3PM to have a quick Brew and i couldnt beleive my eyes when i saw Ian at the Bar. Incredible performance 🎭
I am the wind that fills your sail.
I am the cross that takes your nail.
Wow! Such exquisite lyrics!
Love Songs in my top 5 Tull albums. Velvet Green my favorite of the album, but every song is solid in my book.
Whether you like or don't like Jethro Tull, they're one of the few bands that never sold out, produced quality music. Much to be respected in the music world

Good point!
The most unique and incredibly talented groups of all time. I've seen them probably a dozen times.
I wasn’t - this was indeed “my” era of Tull; grew up with older siblings so this was performed at one of the first live concerts I ever attended … 😀😀
@@1ihws that's excellent, you were very lucky to see this line up playing live!

i agree, the more i watch him in these videos and listen to his work the more i come to think he's one of the more overlooked guitarists.
Brilliant. This too is one of the more difficult songs on the album Seeing it live with such showmanship is a real treat. Today....what rock music????
Multumesc pentru melodie, kostoveninga!
Imi place!
5 Stars!!! Tight harmony, tight rhythm, extremely progressive, and a very interesting composition. Not to mention great showmanship. Hat's off!!
AMAZING SOUND! No group today has this much blending of sounds and greatness.
Doesn't get much better than this. Wonderful artistry!!!!
