The Hazbin Hotel Merch Drama is Insane

- So recently there’s been a bunch of drama surrounding hazbin hotel merch and a situation where a24 started sending out cease and desists to fan merch. I’ll break it all down.
So to give a bit of context before we get to the main crux of the situation, recently fans have been upset because there’s been no updates regarding the playbill. Basically if you purchased the deluxe pre order package, you were supposed to receive 8 playbills for each episode with information on songs and the general world of hazbin. We’re now into may and fans still haven’t received these playbills, and there’s been radio silence regarding this. So fans were understandably a bit upset because they didn’t receive something they paid for.

pretty scummy of a24 to stop fanmade work when it was fan content that kept HH alive for years. In the silence between waiting for the pilot and then for the actual show, it was the fans that kept interest up and engagement. When there was no HH content, the fans stepped in and made some. And they shut it down because people are rightfully mad. Shameful.
Right! Thats exactly my thought. The only reason I kept up with Hazbin was because of the podcasts(forgot what they were called) and the fans who were keeping it alive through fanfiction, theory/animatics and ***merch***. I do believe YES, a24 has the right to DMCA / file copyright(?) against stores making "fan" content, but this obviously isn't the correct way to go about it, and its going to show sooner or later.
Whats really pathetic though is the fact that etsy sellers are getting in trouble and all that, but shitty resellers on Temu, Shein, Aliexpress and so on aren't. 💀
That move A24 did was the equivalent of Nintedo shutting down non profit fan games
EXACTLY! Plus, it started out as a small production, yes the team was very good with the pilot but it came as indie animation. They should know better than anyone fans matter and their creations aren’t spiteful or trying to be mean, but rather sharing a skill to provide for a fandom people really enjoy!
It’s not illegal nor scummy to remove bootleg merch that directly competes with products
@@TheL0neDvrk0n3 no? It would be equal to shutting down for profit fan games
The playbills situation is ridiculous, you can’t really fault the fans for being upset about that.
yep I paid for it in December (pre-order) and its been 6 months... and I know people bought the pre orders day 1.
@@Salza02I bought mine not long after it went on pre-order, its so freaking frustrating not getting it.

Eh, Lackadaisy did the same thing with some preorder pins awhile back. Had to wait a whole year and a half with no news for those.
A24 just knows that no one will buy their merch when there is better merch for less money being sold by fans.
I literally bought the Alastor and Angel Dust pins and they look completely different from the images advertised and I’m shocked no one else is talking about this. Alastor’s line out is bright gold irl and NOT black and it looks bad.
@@howellaboutno9500Big corporations are absolute dog shit when it comes to merch and will absolutely screw you over just for a quick hot buck. Just looking at some mlp merchandise would be a good example for this
@@howellaboutno9500 It's actually just poor lightning unfortunately. If you go back to the promo pictures for the Alastor pin and look closely at the top of the pin and at the bottom, you can actually make out it's gold. Around the bottom of his staff and his ears are where you can see it the most and it's easier to see if you zoom into the image. But I agree with you, I think black or silver would've looked better and honestly the promo pics just have terrible lighting, whoever took those pics did an awful job at it.
@@NobodyUndefined If it was a little gold it would be fine but it’s like, EXTREMELY gold. I don’t think it’s terrible lighting, I think it was extremely intentional.
@@howellaboutno9500 I know as I own the pin, I bought the ultimate pack when it released. It's definitely not intentional as at least with the ultimate package, the preview photos were accurate and you could see the pins were gold. I really think it's just crummy lighting, if you google images of the ultimate package then you can see there the pin is gold.

Being picked up by A24 is such a double edged sword for the show. On one hand it allowed the show to reach a wider audience and get more funds. On the other hand the studios handling of the show has been so piss poor between the merch drama, the playbill situation, and how the release was delayed twice. I honestly wish A24 could work a deal with shark robot and use them for merchandise since I've never had a problem with their quality, pricing and shipping.
Agreed, but joining a big company/distributer has always been a double edged sword. One one hand, you get more money, more exposure, able to reach more audiences and a platform. On the other, they will take copyright and do things their way and not the easy/logical way. Hopefully Spindlehorse and Viv can figure it out.
Release date changed twice AND they only allowed Eight 40 min episodes for a series that deserved 20 episodes to get the story across better
The funny thing is that, the show can reach a wider audience without the bigger company, it'll just take longer.

I can't really blame Viv for this situation, she never seemed to mind small business projects and it really comes across as A24 going nuts, this isn't going to go well as the last thing you should do is not only go after your fan base but piss salt on the open wound by jacking up the prices like this.
This comes off as a calculated attack and they're likely banking on the fans being willing to overlook this happening because of the love of the show.
As it stands I will not be buying Hazbin Hotel official merchandise until this situation resolves itself. The indi run Helluva Boss is still on the table for me.
Frankly even if they reverse this situation the damage might done and it being too little too late to salvage public option.

I thought I was the only one who had the Playbill situation, I had to contact the company to send my HH ultimate package again with no charge bc of the address was insufficient and it was returned back to the seller, I double checked my information of the order and it was all correct which was so weird. I didn't understand how that happened🤔
I was just thinking about my Playbill the other day, wondering if I had ever gotten it or not. Glad I'm not the only one who hadn't received it yet
and A24 doesn't do this with content farms...
They really should
Parody is a different ballpark altogether. They are making exact copies of an existing product
This is like Nintendo all over again.....
Reminds me a bit of when Jake Parker went after people using the “Inktober” name in their Etsy stores. A lot of artists would sell prints of work they made during Inktober or even compile them together and part of the product listing or title would reference Inktober since they created the art as part of the challenge. Same thing, zero warning and suddenly Etsy shops were being taken down left and right because people were selling things like “31 cats, an Inktober 2017 zine”. Even thought the content of the art was completely the artists property, and Parker had always encouraged people to use the Inktober name to connect the community together, all of the sudden people were getting copyright struck. It was a mess and really tarnished what had been a really great experience for a lot of artists out there.
Oh yeah. I remember that happening. It's kind of scary for me because I usually participate in Inktober. It's crazy how he went nuts after that.
Shrek: can we stop having drama for 5 MINUTES????
Part of me wonders if there's also a bit of pettiness behind this given they have barely any merch while fans and Shark Robot have made a metric shit ton. Yes, it is still fairly recent since the first season aired, but the supply is still very sparce by comparison
I've been complaining about the official hh merch since it came out. It's lacking so much and the stuff they had before signing onto a24 was better
The Playbills were the one thing I was looking forward to the most because I LOVE stuff like that, it had song lyrics, characters bios, etc. I still really hope we get them, it's not just about the fact we already paid for it, it's legitimately the coolest item in the entire package imo and I wanted it like crazy

1:45 Wait…A24 also has the rights to Helluva Boss?? I’m seeing three Helluva Boss fan merch in the cease-and-desist list.

This was always going to be an issue. As soon as something is picked up by a big company, deace and desist orders will come down. Though I am surprised it's A24 doing this and not Amazon. Maybe A24 are being overprotective because it's the only well known successful thing they've ever made
That's true. I think it's exactly because of this and maybe because A24 were the first ones to pick it up and invest in it, Amazon mainly being used as a distribution platform (correct me if I am wrong tho)

Hazbin Hotel isn’t indie anymore so the old rules don’t apply. Take notes from the Harry Potter fandom. They’ve been pretty smart about making fan made merch that is wizarding world adjacent without infringing on copyright. You’re not going to win against A24s lawyers.
Also other big companies like Disney aren't usually very happy if someone uses their characters so this is basically understandable.
I'm a Finn and couple years ago in Lego masters someone wanted to build something with moomin theme, but because moomin characters oy ltd is very strict about who can use the charcters, where and why, it wasn't allowed.
I was thinking that this was to do with the people disliking the Hazbin Hotel merchandise as a whole. I only saw a comment saying that "If anyone buys something like this, I'll smash you over the head with it breaking it!" Or something along those lines. I swear, I freaking hate people being petty like this! I never bought any of the mugs, but stuff like this makes me not wanna comment positive stuff or stuff that I find interesting 😔
I saw that tweet too and I believe they are only referring to the Valentino mug due to how he is portrayed in the show. There was no need for such a comment/threat and was a classic case of someone unnecessarily needing to point out they don’t like a character/character merch instead of just ignoring the tweet all together.
@@OuranHaruhi as much as I despise Valentino, I wouldn’t stop anyone from buying a mug that really isn’t hurting anyone!

Thing is though Viv allows people too make merch of her shows
I would say I’m surprised, but in all honesty I’m not surprised that these mugs are now a real thing
I hope people don't attack or even blame Viv for this, because I gurantee this is out of her control. She, for once, has absolutely nothing to do with this drama. She's just the showrunner, and as someone who is very well versed in the media industry since I'm literally an animation student who is planning to go into said industry, I feel like people forget that showrunners don't have too much power. Showrunner is the highest position within the show's crew, but obviously the executives outrank the showrunners. People don't realise the executives control A LOT. When they greenlight your show, you literally essentially sign your characters and world away for them to own under their company. They decide the deadlines, work hours, air dates, amount of episodes allowed per season, how long episodes are, and they can just pull the plug at any point. They also often require the crew to make edits to their stories that they want to tell, such as adding things or taking things out. They're also responsible for PR, social media, marketing and merchandise. Everything the crew pitches has to literally be approved by the executives. This INCLDUES merch. Also, I doubt Viv is in charge of handling copyright. So It's definitely the higher ups and the executives at A24 who are doing all this shit, which really sucks.
Well said. I think that is exactly the issue here.
Jeez! I have been wanting to get a mug or some merch, but I just can’t because of how pricey they are. It’s been pretty tough
Don’t. The pins on the website look nothing like they do irl. Complete scam tbh.
Always drama in this fandom, huh? I do wish they would communicate more with us fans. If they have problems with the playbill, then tell this and don't just remain silent. 😢
I preordered the Playbill ages ago when it was announced. I really wouldn’t mind waiting if they’d just communicate what’s going on with it. I got an email in January saying “you gotta wait a little longer”, and nothing since then :/.
1) The playbill not arriving (i paid for it) is a valid point to criticizing
2) I do agree that shipping and merch prices are overpriced (especially if you are overseas/outside NA). But it supports the show and the best possible way to protest these prices are by not paying.
3) A24 and Spindlehorse are within their legal rights to copyright their IPs, but i do agree it didnt go well and shouldve been handled different.

Oh, I should also mention that they apparently won't ship to Germany anymore. It tells me to change my address. So I tried some friends' addresses and the site said the same.
So... are they cutting off their European fans now or what??
A lot of businesses can't ship to germany, and I think it has something to do with you have to do a lot of bureaucratic work related to what packaging you're using. I've seen quite a few small businesses say that they can't ship to Germany because of that. It's just not worth all the extra labor.😢
I’ve heard from sellers that Germany is awful to ship to, so I’m sure many just don’t want to deal with the hassle.

Getting really tired of hearing that when it's not an issue for every company out there, including SharkRobot, and they DID ship to Germany (for ridiculous prices like they charge for the UK) before.
Shark Robot having limited supply is understandable. There is no excuse for Amazon to put limits on their products.
Mass produced unofficial merch shouldn't be tolerated sure, but hand crafted bespoke stuff is basically never gonna be affecting their market share, and if it did that sounds like the official merch just isn't a viable product anyway if it is costing more mass produced than limited run unofficial stuff

Viv has given her consent to fan merch repeatedly. They can't take it back now. No more than Wizards of the Coast could stop fan content.
They already gave consent for the content to be made. No take-backs.
But that was before vivziepop sold HH to A24. Viv doesn't technically own the IP anymore
@@cassdun619 She gave us thr rights before selling it. Selling it doesn't take away those rights. We already have them. The new owner can't retroactively take away what we were given by a previous owner.
Hasbro tried the same thing when they bought Wizards of the Coast, and thus D&D. It didn't fly then, it won't now.
We have the right to make merch, given to us by the creator and prior owner. They can not revoke it.
As much as I love hazbin hotel, A24 is being really dumb.
Viv never should have gone corporate. She was doing fine selling her own art and pins on Sharkrobot, the prices were pretty fair. Now that it's under a corporation, it's basically "overpay or you're not getting anything, even if you drew or made it yourself"
I mean yeah, but it's her show and choice, so we can't really do anything about it now.
I completely agree. Firstly, let’s be honest, Hazbin Hotel was a complete let down. BECAUSE of corporations, it was crammed into 8 episodes, completely rushed, and practically ruined. Honestly I haven’t rewatched and don’t really think about it anymore. It was good in the moment, but looking at it after the fact… yikes.
Helluva Boss meanwhile is thriving. I love Helluva Biss and I think it’s the better show by miles. Sure it has some sketchy episodes, but it has time to flesh out characters, keep secrets, build up character arcs and plot points, etc. It makes me sad to imagine what Hazbin could have been if Vivzie kept creative liberty.
@@howellaboutno9500Vivzie still had creative liberty with hazbin
@howellaboutno9500 Helluva is looking like the characters are FINALLY going to face real consequences, so if the new season is the find out season I'm on board. But yeah. The writing is atrocious
@@RandomHandle837 Not complete liberty. When you pitch a show, you need to be open to them changing things. And they WILL change a lot of things. For example, the episode count. Who knows what else they changed.
Also the animation took a huge hit compared to the pilot or Helluva.
Oh boy another Hazbin Hotel drama
Not going to lie.... the Amazon merch store (the one on Amazon) sucks so badly! Like- who the hell is buying that ugly-ass throw pillow cover? The crewneck logo placement looks like a blind man did it. The official website only has the pins and keychain in stock; in which nobody wants to spend 15 dollars (plus shipping) on a pin. So yeah- people are going to be making merch they want to see and merch they would actually buy.
The merch absolutely sucks. Totally accurate about the shirt design placements, it's godawful, and imo the designs themselves just don't translate well to clothing anyway. And like, they got all those phone cases but not the incredible phone case designs used in the show? The mugs were a good start but clearly they need more stock or a per-person or address limit because scalpers are ridiculous. And there's so many characters not included that people would totally buy, but god forbid they expand their lineup

I've been wondering this for YEARS
Even before the official show dropped, I'd see people selling their own merch, and all I could think was "Is this legal?"
Short answer is NO.
When you use someone else's character, and use it to earn money in any way, it is copyright infringement. To do so, you have to get permission/licence from original creator, or entity that has copyrights. Usually small brands/creators won't mind this, but now Hazbin is in Amazon hands, so i suppose that it is responsible for current situation. It isn't looking good for A24, but fan shops owners are the one that breaks the law.
So you should never use someone else's creation if you don't have written permission to do so, or you could end like this.
This is common practice in industry (read about what Disney do if you infringe it's copyright).
@@freya663 Vivziepop GAVE explicit permission though. She literally said it was completely fine and she was thrilled. She bought and supported fan merch. Obviously it’s complicated with a corporation owning it now, but people making fan merch did nothing wrong because they were never informed it wasn’t ok now.
@@howellaboutno9500 Unfortunately Viv statement is worthless from legal standpoint. Ofcors someone can try and take this to court, but i think that whoever owns copyright to Hazbin now check this before acting.
If you want to sell someone else cration you have to have proper legal documentation, otherwise, you can put yourself in huge mess.
I presume that when Viv sign contract with Amazon (probably), she give up her copyright. Now, new owner wants to get everything straight, and because there isn't any legal history between Viv and merch sellers their will treat everything as copyright infringement. Viv probably didn't even think that this could happen. Most people have poor understanding of copyright, fair use, authors rights ets. in certain situation.
It is ofcors unfair on basic human level, but it is ok from legal standpoint.
And i would like to add that if you are business owner you absolutely have to cover your ass because situation like this happens, and you are the one that will lose big.
I'm also about to release my own merch aswell and seeing this is just so scary, absolutely horrible. I hope all the artists get their campaigns back :,(

They were so cute but the day before they were gonna be released they were taken down and were cancelled. So many people wanted those cardigans and I'm sooo sad they were taken downnn
Freak I wanted that card stupid scalpers.
I really hope the playbills arrive soon bc my family and I are moving this year and
1. I'm still not sure where we're moving to and
2. We might move into out trailer and I'm not sure if stuff can be delivered wherever we're going to stay
I waited a month to be able to purchase the trading card packs and it never updated from subbing to a waitlist. So I gave up on possibly getting them. Oh and missed my chance on the Alastor Promo.
That outro song brings memories back
As someone who has never been able to afford any kind of merch ever due to lack of funds I'd be really upset if it all shuts down and one day I can't find more. The words 'limited time' make me click off of anything so fast it's a miracle I knew the show finished when it did because I hated seeing all the nice stuff I knew I wouldn't get, it's great for those who got stuff but to be in a place to never worry about money sounds impossible.
It's starting and it's making me really sad
Just the situation with the trading cards alone is crazy. Ordering in January, get them in MAY when they originally said April, out of stock. And now rumors going around that they are going to stop making them all together. When they are in high demand. To me that just is poor buisness. If a product is selling KEEP IT going! And make sure it doesn't run out!
they really should have issued a statement to say that they're going to crack down on artists that are selling fanart of their show or even just to say like "anything sold online will be taken down due to copyright" so everyone has a chance to move their stuff. its a shame that so many stores were taken out because of this too. Also the shipping prices for those mugs are insane omg I didn't even bother to look at them and like.. $115 for shipping would make me scream lmao
Death, taxes, and people on Twitter getting angry about Hazbin Hotel.
This is reasonable, people payed for stuff, yet still haven't received it, I recommend watching the video first before commenting
Nah, this is justified. I understand being defensive, seen as most Hazbin Hotel drama on Twitter is bullshit but fans not getting what they paid for is a very valid concern. It's something that ACTUALLY needs attention and shouldn't be swept under the rug.
Mad I missed the Pimpin' Not Simpin' mug
Australian over here yeah we get clobbered when it comes to exchange rates you are better off making your own more cheaper and easy that’s why we don’t by merch here because we know the pain
I get why people are reluctant to ship out here we are another world away hence to solve the problem two companies both northern/eastern southern/western hemispheres both make the merch so everyone is happy and no one is getting exchange rate penalised
This is why I ALWAYS tell artists to not sell fan merch on Etsy. I’ve seen so many businesses go down because they sold fan merch on Etsy.
Im scared if my shirts will be fake. Theres an app called trendyol and theres hazbin hotel merch but i dont know if its real or fake
At this point I can’t even lay down without this happening
I researched it and Etsy released back in 2005 which was 19 years ago.
Edit: And the hazbin hotel merch of Alastor trading card already sold out. Including mugs as well. They ordered way too quick I think.
Vivziepop and the crew have nothing to do with A24's bullshit!
It's a bit- like the Undertale Yellow and sebastian situation but with shops
As a Brazilian, I'm very disappointed with the whole situation. I've always wanted to help by buying official products to support the production of the shows (Helluva Inclusive), but it's complicated because the dollar price is already absurd, and now there's this story of making products so expensive and still of low quality... It's impossible to feel like buying under these conditions.
PS: I love your channel. Hugs from Brazil.
Did anyone notice the dark carnival theme from L4D2 at the end of the video. That's pretty rad 😎
This is what happens when you sell your creations to a corpo. This whole project was birthed and uplifted by an entire community of people that enjoyed adding their own contributing piece to the whole, from the VA's and the hunicast keeping it alive, to the fanwork, to the volunteers that wanted to aid on the creation of the episodes themselves...
But now the project has an owner, and that owner only cares about one thing, how much money this babe is going to make. Creation is no longer the purpose.
How fitting that the show is about people losing their souls to power huh>
I can only hope that Helluva will be spared this treatment.
My exact thoughts. In my opinion, Helluva Boss is the better show. It's not perfect by any means but nothing is. I liked Hazbin but corporate meddling stopped it from being amazing.
i wanted to add something. but there was also drama speifically about people buying vals mug. to the point someone tweeted that if they see someone with vals mug he would hit them over the head and leave only to later backtrack and claim it was a joke. but still people were also upset because i guess people are fans of val in the show and it's obvious why they be upset but they're going as a far as aaying anyone who's a fan of val aren't good people. which is just like wtf?
Honestly, while it all really sucks that people aren't getting what they paid for, and that shops are being taken down, one thing I gotta say is that people should be a lot more careful when selling fan art. Getting struck down for copyright is a real possibility, so it's important to have other more original merch to sell on the side. That way an entire shop isn't just gone if you were to get copyright struck.
I truly deeply wish i got that shirt the many chances i saw it. I was always low on funds and kept deciding against it. Being smart with money makes me sad
Damn man I tried to contact Etsy customer support when something I ordered never arrived and didn’t get any help whatsoever, good to know the requirement to get something done is to be a large company like A24.
