I too was 19 years old when I arrived in Vietnam. I ended up flying as helicopter door gunner for the 119th Assault Helicopter Company. We flew combat assaults in the enemy held areas inserting elements of the 4th Infantry. This was back in 1970. I lost some good buddies during my tour of duty. This music helps me to remember and appreciate their memory. We were young once and those of us who came back will always remember those who did not make it back alive.

Hi Chris. I am 61 years old and I am from the Czech Republic. I understand your feelings. I will probably never be able to understand exactly what you experienced and what you felt then, but I definitely understand what you feel today, especially when I read your honest words. I never thought I would experience war in Europe, let alone about 700 km from our country. And it is here. What do you say. I feel it strongly, and I experience it very intensely. But in any case, I think that great evil must fight even greater evil. Best regards Pavel from Kladno.
went to see that movie alone...I am a Nam vet....walked out of that movie depressed.....it was the most graphic and real movie of that war that I had ever seen....
Bought the CD around the time it came out. Listened to it a lot back then because of the film which my dad took me to see as a teenager. Got a valuable lesson. Fast forward to Veterans Day 2022, I was able to assist two Vietnam era veterans who are now ailing and elderly. They had the time of their life at The American Legion. Their mannerisms reflected those soldiers in this film. This past Veteran’s Day I will never forget. And I can credit my father for teaching me about Vietnam. I grew up on it. May his soul and all the US veterans rest in peace. Amen. 🇺🇸
I'm gonna tell you the single quote that summarizes the Vietnam War. "We were invaded by the most brutal regime on Earth and we resisted for decades, and after they killed 5 million of us, we defeated them. Long live the fight of the peoples of the world against the Washington regime."
"You" didn't do anything, as "you" aren't a Rockefeller, a Morgan, a Goldman Sachs... "you" are an expendable human weapon used by them to kill, poison and rape those of us who question American hegemony. "You" are ignorant and fanatical enough to call "we" those who never go to war and laugh at you from the 5th Avenue. From their living rooms there, they thank you for speaking in their name and doing their dirty job while you believe that you're doing justice.
Yes, we did not fight a WAR in Viet Nam. We were suckered into FIANCING the American military-industrial complex (which Eisenhower warned against) and THE BLOATING OF LBJ's pocket book. Another statesman, in his later life, Robert McNamara wrote a book; "In Retrospect: The Tragedy and Lessons of Vietnam", and also cried tears over the insidious..(for no real value)....anguish and pain he...(and the good ol' boys)... put 18-20 year old soldiers through. I personally doubt the Domino Theory's validity. I know the "Gulf of Tonkin Resolution" was fakery bullshit! I know that the rules of engagement...(there).....forced soldiers to fight with peashooters and one arm tied behind their backs. Years later, we saw the same crap when Rumsfeld exclaimed, "you go to war with what you have". I also know that IF LBJ et.al.was/were so chicken shit of China and the USSR .........(therefore not bombing Hanoi)...., they had no business being there!. I could go on and on, but it boils down to only two things; power and money-greed at any price; not philosophical B.S. about not fighting the enemy.
When this movie came out in the theaters in the 80s my dad took me to go see Platoon a few times. I didn't know until I grew older that this movie was about the outfit he served with 25th Infantry Division Bravo Co. 3/22. Apparently the movie takes place the same time he was over there 1966 -67 . The war never leaves them, just a few years ago at a 25th Infantry Div. Vietnam Vet reunion, I saw my Dad crying for the first time in my life. Must have brought up some buried emotions.
My dad too was in the 25th, Bravo Co., 69-70. We watched this movie together whenever he could muster the nerves. I never saw him cry but I could see him hurt every time we saw it. He instilled in me the same emotions whenever I see this or any other ‘Nam movie. Just looking at The Wall makes me break down for all those who served and especially those who didn’t come home. God bless and keep all you ‘Nam vets and your families.
richard mell full metal jacket is a joke compared to this. First half is okay, second is crap. This, Apocalypse Now and Jarhead are probly the only comparable movies about war in this class. Apocalypse now is different however, different look on war than this, so they're both good in their own sense
Platoon was and still is one of the all time greatest war movies that was ever made. Also giving credit to movies such as Full Metal jacket, Saving Private Ryan, Hamburger Hill, Apocalypse Now and a few other oldies....
It really heartbreaking that so many lost their on a lie and another thing that makes it even more heart breaking is for those who came back from the war were failed by their government and mistreated terribly by the people for years.
@@cacambo589 The Vietnam war was built basically on a lie propogated by the Johnson Administration. The gulf of tonkin incident was a false flag entirely.
I was 21 yrs. old when I went to Viet Nam, a lot of good guys died, and we had very little support from the people back home they didn't understand what we were going through, I lost friends while I was there, even guys I grew up with. We were all brothers and would die for each other, we didn't enjoy our time there, and when we got back home we were spit on and called baby killers, so I just shut my mouth up and didn't talk about it, nobody cared.
+Luis Navarro You have to speak. There are many people want to know the truth of that War. U can give the truth! You have to tell it them otherwise it'll be passed away with you! Sorry for my rude... but I think U have to... Do it!
Luis Navarro I am sorry for what you went through so many people back then did not recognize ptsd and could not had helped you with all the issues that you and your brothers brought from 'Nam. Also I am sorry for your lost and all I can say is that you and your brothers and sisters are heroes for me that statement " no one is left behind" shows me the meaning of the word "brotherhood" and that you did everything to emphasize it in the battlefield. God bless you and thank you for your service. Welcome home. You and your brothers and sisters are in my heart and prayers.
I saw this movie in the theatre. It touched me deeply, like no other war movie has. I also have the DVD and I re-visit it every now and then especially when I am feeling self pity and life isn't worth the struggle. This movie brings me back to the reality that every "minute" of our lives is a gift. And "each" little joyful moment is a blessing".. because it can be over in a mere second. May God be with you all.🙏
God is Fake. Have faith in yourself. Because the invisible man isn’t here to help you. You help yourself and others. Fuck the Bible and all religions. Just a way to control the masses. And the fools let them. 😂 have a good day.
I think this movie portrayed the Vietnam War the best. Mostly because the director Oliver Stone was a Vietnam war veteran who actually fought in the war, and knew what it really was like.
A lot of the things in this movie are things he really witnessed as well, such as the village scene and someone he based sgt barnes off of as well as elias.
Thank you vets, war is a terrible thing to experience and what went on in Vietnam. It was not right what they did to you and people protesting you. Again thank you
This music makes me cry,my older brother was 20 years old, when he was killed in this war,for nothing,I remember my poor mother her sadness it killed her too.

War is a machine It takes young men with innocence It changes them It breaks them It traumatizes them And the machine spits them out And the only thing left are broken soldiers
A friend of mine from scouts was a very proud soldier, handsome. But as I saw him some years later he was broken from the kosovo war...as a young man. I can feel with your words here.
My brother and I loved platoon. We watched it a million times. We joined the army at age 18-19. We were doing a patrol and we got ambushed.IEDs everywhere. He got shot 15 times. He said"They got Elias." I held him as he died. I played this at his funeral.
only today in 2022 I decided to watch this masterpiece and this gotta be one of the most realistics war movie of all time, it's angusting, sad and depressing. you can see yourself in most of the characters along the movie, you can feel their desesperate, the agony to go home, to end that war...this movie and this soundtrack are speechless...
War is like death. You can postpone it, you can avoid it, but eventually it will come. I love this music. To the previous vets, and vets to come. Good luck. See you on the battlefield.
Comrade_Ivan get rid of that mentality, otherwise were doomed and we will be extinct, weve reached a point in our civilization were war is no longer a part of us and most people have realized that, people like you are a minuscule percentage
Based god megladon example nobody agrees with all the taliban people, theyre assholes we know but america is tryna look like heroes and shit, starting wars only to make it worse now theres terrorist attacks everywhere, if you kill one taliban you will wake up the inner terrorist in 5-10 more, their family and friends will now be enemies too, youre killing them in their own soil they aint letting that shit slip just like that, I known I wouldnt, plus all the shady shit related to the cia, the government funding terrorists, like alright so war is mostly a game to you😂 funny thing the people like you dont even realize you are being fooled by your beloved government/military, killing yourselves and funding the enemy for their own dark purposes, nice going dumbasses, the strongest nation in the world misusing their fucking power, irresponsible pieces of shit, trillions of dollars wasted, hundreds of thousands of lives gone, way to go "heroes"
My brother in law who did 2 deployments in Nam as a gunner on a Huey committed suicide 20 years after he came home......he saw things no one should ever see......
Check out Master Sgt. Andrew 'Andy' Christian Marckesano. The fox news article says he served six full tours in Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne. His friends said of him he was the real life Captain America. The guy was back home for good. One day, while having dinner he committed suicide in front of his wife. He had 3 small children. That gives a hint what sequels war leaves on someone. The toughest guys are not immune.
I was 19 years old in April 22, 1969 and flew from El Toro Naval Air Station, California on a commercial jet to Okinawa on my way to Vietnam. The USMC taught me very well how to handle stress and survival in the bush. I served With G/3/11 1st Marine Division, I Corps. I was a gunner on a 105mm Howitzer in G Battery Hill 10. We shot 24/7 and saved many Marine Grunts lives with accurate cannon fire times six guns in unison. I performed all the duties on the gun and we took turns, loading, setting fuzes, firing, and breaking out hundreds of rounds of ammo on a daily basis. My pride was knowing that every time I pulled that lanyard someone was gonna be blown away in a few short seconds and save Marines from an ambush gone bad somewhere in the bush. This music really puts chills down my spine whenever i hear it. God Bless the USMC and our United States of America. Also, God Bless the other branches of our military who served in country during my tour in the Nam. 1969-1970 DANNYGUNSIX...
This is one of the very few movies I seen several times at the theatre, and then many more times at home after I bought it. Some of Charlie Sheen's best work.
Vietnam was a tragic war. I love this movie. It makes me proud to know that all of these guys went through the agony and pain. Struggle and hurfulness. They did and went through that for our country. This movie lives in my heart always..
My grandfather drove supply trucks from Saigon to Hue from fall 1966 to winter 1968, said it was the scariest time of his life. Every time they began a convoy he never knew who would survive and who wouldn't
I agree it wud be scary. When I arrived in Saigon I had no job, so they wanted me to drive their truck and deliver messages to our other office and said no that's not my job. They made me take the dmv test and then the international test. I passed the first one then purposely failed the other one. Pissed them, so I had to take it again and again and again and again. I failed the international 6 times my 1st sgt really hated me until he left Vietnam. Lucky me
I remember going to the theater to see this movie in college. I was one year into military training, so the effect of listening to the musical scores, and seeing Platoon twice since it's debut, has now become a visceral experience. A timeless classic, with perhaps the greatest score you will ever hear. Kudos to my Military brothers and sisters
That movie and the music impressed me so much when I was younger, and still today. The eternal fight of good and evil within each of us. What would WE do in case of war? It isn't that much easy to say.
I'm not sure if anyone will read this or care, but this piece, Barber's Adagio for Strings, is known as "Agnus Dei" (Lamb of God). When sung with a choir the only words are, "Agnus Dei, qui tolis peccata mundi, Dona nobis pacem." (Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant us peace.) Very appropriate for a war movie, in my opinion.
Gives me chills. Our world is a crooked place, where war robs us from our innocents. Peace on earth is a myth. This song will last until the end of time as the true enigma of our world.
best movie ever ,with the best scenes no one will ever beat oliver stone. for me the best scene is the bunker defense while vietcongs are assaulting and swarming their enemy by thousands, and then chris avenges ellias.
One of the very best war movies as this is based on what soldiers saw in Vietnam and not some propaganda. Oliver Stone served in that war himself and witnessed.
this song is so heartbreaking, i feel for those who lost their lives in all wars, god this makes me cry, i even cry so hard, when william defoe's character sgt. elias dies. great movie too.

+Arturo Hernandez Lopez No. You didn't fight the enemy, and you didn't fight yourselves. You fought FOR the enemy against your own people: the vietnamese people. You fought for the interest of the banksters in Washington and Wall Street.
+Patrick N Thanks, I didn't know. And my statement is still right for every American soldier who fought there: You fought for the interest of the banksters in Washington and Wall Street.
My dad went to Vietnam (I’m Australian) my dad and we watch this together when the Anzacs fought for us, we remember our ancestors who fought in the war
My great uncle served in vietnam, he was also an Australian, he was on patrol when the person in front of him stepped on a land mine killing him instantly, also killing the soldier who was behind my great uncle. My uncle himself was badly wounded and was largely affected by the war for many years. R.I.P everyone who lost their lives in this war.
Adagio for strings. im 31.... and can still remember when and where i heard this for the very first time. i was 6, living in Norwich England, and getting ready for School when this came on the radio.
This was by far my favourite war movie if not movie of all time... the characters were amazing and depicted a contrast of good and evil in an almost spiritual way

I first watched this movie not long after it was released which was about 30 years ago. I loved it, saw it twice, it really had an affect on me and I would have to say the sound track greatly contributed to how I felt during and after the movie. Especially Adagio, it is so haunting. I have watched it again today with my husband and although I still rate it as a brilliant movie it made me feel sick, sad and horrified. It is a real story written and directed by a Vietnam Vet, won Academy for Best Picture and Best Director - Oliver Stone.
Excellent music score for this movie, I love how they can imagine what would work to such a great skillful emotional journey most of us were involved in on either directly or knows of those who where actually going through the horrors of such madness of testing the wills of those who became frightened and those who though higher of the human race as a whole , the damage it did cause will forever be etched in our memory and history , but not the pain. RIP all whose souls are now mostly at peace. Fantastic enjoyment of empathy to be human .
no one should have t go through something like that, William defoes character was based on a real guy oliver stone served with and lost his life the Vietnam veterans should get 100 times more respect than they do
Not just Elias (Stone based Elias his character off of a native indian guy he knew over there but lost his life) Stone also based the character of Barnes off of a real bad dude he served with over there and admitted to be scared of him. The REAL "Barnes" was a guy who had been shot 6/7 times but kept volunteering to go back into the fight.
What about the people they killed 3000, 4000... km far from USA, at their door steps? Do you feel sorry for them? I feel sorry for both sides but have in mind among the sides children are victims just from the side of those who died fighting for the lives of their families not for democracy. Be aware of that. I am from Serbia and I consider US people as friends but when reading about casualties in some war where US takes part first thing which crosses my mind is US bombs. Sorry, I had to say that!
when you relate this to the film it is one of the best classical pieces of music ever, even if you listen to this without watching platoon it moves you !
Yes. I never saw the movie, but this song is heart wrenching to me. I can never hear it without tearing up. I don’t know why. But I know that war has to be hell. !

I was in my second year in the U.S. Marines and it may sound crazy but Vietnam and it's veterans always fascinated me.I felt a special attachment to this era, this movie, the soldiers(both dead and or alive). My oldest Brother Louie was there with the Second Marine Btn and survived. He showed me his medals, pictures he took while there as his eyes welled with tears.he regretted having to kill people he never KNEW at all for this cause. It was so hard seeing him cry after so long.I wish i was born a few years earlier because this is 1 WAR that has a Special place in my heart for those who died in it and for those who survived.God Bless all of them, may they ALL rest in peace forever.....................
Today I heard this music as background music in a documentary. I instantly knew it was from the movie Platoon. After so many years that I saw this movie. That's proving how music stuck in your memories, especially when it's so impressing as this .
Was a career troop with 10 years in. Volunteered for Vietnam. Got there in 1969......left after 3 years in the war. How do you tell people the horrors you saw ? How do you tell people what it was like to live like an animal for 3 years?
Bob Remel I deeply apologize for my ignorance but what is a career troop? I'm English and I've never come across that term before. Also on a side note I thank you for your service to your country your fallen brother in arms will always be remembered.
PLS READE THIS !!! This song is sublime !! You can feel incredible emotions, sadness, cruelty, suffering... when I hear this music and thinking about the story of the film, I can ,in a certain way, feel how bad and horrible was the Vietnam war and war in general... I would like to salute all the soldiers that died for there country. But unfortunately war start always for economic trouble and innocent people die. We all think to live in a wonderful world , but we hide the cruelty of our society. We are controlled by all the leader of the world with propagation hiding the bad part of the world.
"Why are we still here? Just to suffer? Every night, I can feel my leg... and my arm... even my fingers. The body I've lost... the comrades I've lost... won't stop hurting... It's like they're all still there. You feel it, too, don't you? I'm gonna make them give back our past."

Amen. 🇺🇸
*Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth*
"We did not fight the enemy, we fought ourselves. And the enemy was in us"
This single quote summarize the Vietnam War
Same today my friend ☺
They are still doing it with this fake war on terror
One of the most heart touching movie i have ever seen. I think we will never see better movie about this war.
what about Full Metal Jacket I have to admit it is very good though
richard mell
Yes, its also very good movie! Apocalypse now, Deer Hunter and some other movies are also good. But Platoon touched me the best.
Fair point
richard mell full metal jacket is a joke compared to this.
Knowing that the war was built on a lie and that so many good people were sent to their demise is even more heartbreaking.
WAR ALWAYS BUILT ON A LIE
It really heartbreaking that so many lost their on a lie and another thing that makes it even more heart breaking is for those who came back from the war were failed by their government and mistreated terribly by the people for years.
Thank you for your service.
Which war was that, then?
Do it!
Well maybe it's not you but your government who sent you there...
You and all your brothers in arms have my respect, and deserve it from all.
im sorry.....thanks
May God be with you all.🙏
You too man.. you too.
God is Fake. Have faith in yourself. Because the invisible man isn’t here to help you. You help yourself and others. Fuck the Bible and all religions. Just a way to control the masses. And the fools let them. 😂 have a good day.
I think this movie portrayed the Vietnam War the best. Mostly because the director Oliver Stone was a Vietnam war veteran who actually fought in the war, and knew what it really was like.
i agree, but mostly from 70-71

Platoon is one of the masterpieces of contemporary cinema.

Platoon showed the sadness of war a pointless war....... it was all about money.
OLIVER STONE IS A GENIUS
War is a machine
It takes young men with innocence
It changes them
It breaks them
It traumatizes them
And the machine spits them out
And the only thing left are broken soldiers

only today in 2022 I decided to watch this masterpiece and this gotta be one of the most realistics war movie of all time, it's angusting, sad and depressing. you can see yourself in most of the characters along the movie, you can feel their desesperate, the agony to go home, to end that war...this movie and this soundtrack are speechless...
War is like death. You can postpone it, you can avoid it, but eventually it will come.
I love this music.
To the previous vets, and vets to come. Good luck. See you on the battlefield.

This song gives you a true feeling of how cruel war really is, yet most of us will never see it ourselves

My grandfather drove supply trucks from Saigon to Hue from fall 1966 to winter 1968, said it was the scariest time of his life. Every time they began a convoy he never knew who would survive and who wouldn't
wow, thanks for sharing that.
saigon to hue is pretty darn far. My dad was an MP and would guard those convoys. RPGs always would hit the tankers.

I was one year into military training, so the effect of listening to the musical scores, and
seeing Platoon twice since it's debut, has now become a visceral experience. A timeless classic, with perhaps the greatest score you will ever hear. Kudos to my Military brothers and sisters
That movie and the music impressed me so much when I was younger, and still today. The eternal fight of good and evil within each of us. What would WE do in case of war? It isn't that much easy to say.

One of
one of the most beautiful songs from a movie you will ever hear in your lives
I'm not sure if anyone will read this or care, but this piece, Barber's Adagio for Strings, is known as "Agnus Dei" (Lamb of God). When sung with a choir the only words are,
"Agnus Dei, qui tolis peccata mundi, Dona nobis pacem."
(Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant us peace.)
Very appropriate for a war movie, in my opinion.
Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis ...

I think now, looking back, we did not fight the enemy; we fought ourselves. And the enemy was in us. The war is over for me now, but it will always be there, the rest of my days as I'm sure Elias will be, fighting with Barnes for what Rhah called possession of my soul. There are times since, I've felt like the child born of those two fathers. But, be that as it may, those of us who did make it have an obligation to build again, to teach to others what we know, and to try with what's left of our lives to find a goodness and a meaning to this life.

Superb tribute to this film all the youth fell for nothing ..... respect to them
Excellent music score for this movie, I love how they can imagine what would work to such a great skillful emotional journey most of us were involved in on either directly or knows of those who where actually going through the horrors of such madness of testing the wills of those who became frightened and those who though higher of the human race as a whole , the damage it did cause will forever be etched in our memory and history , but not the pain. RIP all whose souls are now mostly at peace. Fantastic enjoyment of empathy to be human .
i never forget the sounds of platon, all my life
no one should have t go through something like that, William defoes character was based on a real guy oliver stone served with and lost his life the Vietnam veterans should get 100 times more respect than they do
many of my early mentors were vets from this period

Adagio for Strings is probably one of the best orchestra pieces that I can relate to a movie. The Band of Brothers theme song comes a close second.

Always knew the music but never knew it was from this movie.
Just watched it and crying like a baby
This song alone brought tears to my eyes before i even watched the movie
This song is called Adiago For Strings- Samuel Barber
Tout à fait...
Adagio per archi.
"Adagio" means "slow" or "slowly". In italian.
Adagio 11 for strings. Listen to it monthly.
Samuel Barber was a 20th century American whose work evoked older classical composers.
This makes me think of my Dad. He was in Vietnam for 2 tours. He was infantry. He passed 3 years ago. I miss him so much. 😢
may those who have died in the wars rest in peace their sacrifices was not in vain so that we can live a life of freedom from tyranny and injustice
MASTER CYCLONIS i agree on everything but they sadfully didn't dy for a reason that war was for nothing...

Always listen too this song when thinking of my dad before he passed away this was a film he loved I miss him so much could do with a chat
geoffrey massey My father owned this film. It makes me think of mine too. He is also gone.
Easily one of my favourite films and soundtracks.
my friends dad would wake up in the middle of night yelling, "incoming". then break down and cry...
Bless his heart...Been there...
bless
man that's heart breaking. knowing the loss of life for a war without meaning
Are you speaking of China getting their just desserts
+Lord Commander Collins what just desserts? please explain
"Why are we still here? Just to suffer? Every night, I can feel my leg... and my arm... even my fingers. The body I've lost... the comrades I've lost... won't stop hurting... It's like they're all still there. You feel it, too, don't you? I'm gonna make them give back our past."
After quarantine:
- Hey, man. Looks on my new Batman mask.
- Mask...
*corona flashback*
Daryl? What are you doing here?
Seriously though. A lot of people will have ptsd over corona. People with chronic diseases that feared catching the disease, were paranoid, and didn’t leave the house. People that got it and had long term symptoms. People that lost a love one.
