I met him backstage in 2006? They played with the chariot, underoath, and as cities burn...he was holding court outside of the buses and I asked him about the song gentleman and he was just so kind in explaining why they didn't play it. It's always stuck with me what a great speaker he is and how gentle he is. Has to be rad to have him as a professor. I wanna come sit in on a class.
This has been my favorite band for nearly 15 years. Aaron Weiss is unquestionably my favorite lyricists, and one of my favorite poets. As an academic myself, I'm so glad you're enjoying his professorship.
One of the most influential drummers in post hardcore and experimental rock n roll. Almost 20 years of brilliance. [A→B] Life, specifically had a huge impact on my drumming.
@@AN-vs5pb It's really hard to compare them to anyone because they're so unique. But I would say these artists and albums are in a similar vain as mewithoutYou: Brand New (The Devil and God Are Raging Inside of Me, Daisy), Manchester Orchestra (Cope, A Black Mile to the Surface), And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead (X: The Godless Void and Other Stories).
one of the most influential bands that a suprising number of people havnt listened to yet. a true diamond in the rough group of people making insane music for so many years.
Just saw them for the first time ever last night in Denver as part of their farewell tour. So good and so sad I won't be able to see them a 2nd time. Aaron is incredible and looks like he should be a children's book writer!
I was at that show. Absolutely stunning performance as usual for mwY. Glad you got to experience them once! They’ve been my favorite live band for 20 years, and Aaron is so unassuming; I love how all that sound and emotion erupts out of that small guy, especially on their older material.
Aaron is such a fascinating and intelligent person. I love how he sits back, crosses his legs, and drinks his water before throwing it down on the mic.
For those that might not know the band originally planned to only do this gig for 20 years. The coof messed up their schedule so they went a little over that in order to do a proper farewell. I guess what makes that crazy is if you knew this well before their 20th year you could feel the end coming year after year. I respected how they had a plan from the get go and for me makes me miss even more they will never do this again.
So I had a small hard drive with my favorite music on it that I took with me on patrol when I was stationed on a ship. So I basically got through months of not seeing shore for months by listening to mewithoutyou, and that's pretty special to me.
Honestly, one of my favorite bands of all time. Somehow they found a way to distill the depth and breadth of human passion into moments of sonic ecstasy.
I wasn't ready for the sound change when "it's all crazy it's all false.." came out. I've been rediscovering them this week and man... I've been missing out.
During the bridge in red cow you see Aaron sipping that h2o so casually with his legs gently crossed then just discards it and fucking RIFFS on his last stanza is pure hardcore metamorphosis. So hype
listening to them is practically nostalgic these days. I first heard them when I saw the music video for January 1979 on a Christian music channel on satellite, and I loved it. it brings back a lot of memories. that was dang near 15 years ago I guess. I wish I could have seen them live before they called it a day.
@@phis.750 I saw them live at least twice, always a great show. The first time I saw them was in a closed art gallery in their beginning days, Aaron walked through the crowd as he sang, first guy I ever saw do that.
end of Blue Hen is so amazing. "I'll wrap up your absence in blankets of reverence, a mastodon's shadow divided by zero!" Mastodon being something very large and very extinct. SO smart.

How did I miss these guys in my life till now!!!??? I'm 51. As a kid I was into alternative stuff none of my friends liked, like the 77's, The Swirling Eddie's, Adam Again...... but that is late 80's, early 90's. Still a big Comeback Kid fan etc.... But somehow I never heard these guys till 2023!!! I think the late Gord Downey would love you guys!! (Google away kids)
Saw these guys supporting Coheed and Cambria in Birmingham, UK, circa '04/'05. Hadn't heard of them, hell, people had barely heard of Coheed. The ticket cost £8 lol. I travelled from Mid-Wales for the gig. When these guys came on, I didn't quite understand what I was seeing/hearing, I just knew I liked it. Checked them out after the gig and have enjoyed them ever since. Brother, Sister is in my top 10 albums of all time. Addition: Saw Coheed again this year (2024) and Claudio signed my ticket from the 2004 gig. He found it super cool I'd kept the ticket for so long. He'd be more impressed if he knew it had been through 25 house move with me too. lol.
Somewhere in Red Cow or maybe the song before if, Rickie, cuts his hand and his pants are covered in blood. Yet he keeps going with such intensity. These guys really are incredible. .
like we all do? When you listen to MWY and then sing it back to yourself, in public or private, you sound like a madman speaking scripture - lmao once my gf said "WTF are you singing? Is that scripture?" - we're not dating anymore.
It is a good question though. I've played in a Hardcore band until 2 years ago. (I was 35 when we quit) and the other bands we were playing with were getting younger every year.
the first song's intro is the same exact chord progression and rhythm as Boo by Pinback... someday... i will sail again... to a distant shore... far away...
@Ryan Smith Yep... Saw these guys more times than I could count in church basements and tiny venues with no stages in the early 00s and Aaron's intensity always made for an incredible and unique experience. Haven't seen them in years, so I don't know if he still does it, but he used to do lots of ad-libbing and changing up lyrics of songs from show to show and it was always amazing.
i know its a year late but he is actually playing double-butted sticks. they're designed for steel drums but they are fun to play on trap kits as well. you can get them anywhere.
Tyler Thomas they're not though. You can see the regular tapered end anytime he's not playing. But, since he only plays them backwards I wonder why he doesnt just use double butted sticks
Blake Killganon you’re right. Didn’t catch that. I assumed they were because there was an interview with him in a drumming magazine a few years back where he mentioned he had switched to double butted sticks and every time I’ve seen them live he’s been using them. I even talked to him about it after a show once and experimented with them for a while after that. My guess is he’s just used to using them and didn’t have any available for this show for some reason

was at the austin one , sam situation . first and last
Never got to see them
Their drummer is so good.
I see him more as a percussionist than a drummer. He truly understands what the drums can do for a piece of music
Aaron is such a fascinating and intelligent person. I love how he sits back, crosses his legs, and drinks his water before throwing it down on the mic.
I had no idea mewithoutYou was still around. They were one of my absolute favorite bands back in the day.
How does mewithoutYou not have more views than this? They're such an influential band.
They are not hipster enough...
I dunno..the drummer is wearing glasses inside. That's pretty cool.

Agreed. Saw it live a few times too, and it's one of my favorites parts to their songs.
