I think people who said that are condescending people. They hear South East Asia & they asume all countries in it are developing countries with all goods & services being cheap. They obviously are ignorant & did not care to read about the country they are about to visit.

As a singaporean, I disagree. I take pride in my country and will confidently say that my country is the epitome of what a city can and should be. My disagreement comes from 2 main reason, cities aren't for everyone, and that the "perfect-ness" of this country makes it feel artificial. Both of these points work hand in hand, there really isn't much to do in Singapore that is outside the confines of "city." The artificial-ness also leaves a weird feeling for many travellers. A visiting friend of mind described it as "the country feels too perfect that it is surreal and I don't feel like I belong" -- a sentiment shared by many Singaporeans

I've been to Singapore 4 times and I loved each and every visit. None of those 3 reasons have and effect on me whatsoever. Singapore may be small but it's far from boring, there's so many attractions and a good number of them you don't have to pay for. Of course it's also expensive because it's a very intriguing mix of traditional and modern, plus I'm from NYC so I'm used to places that are pretty pricey. I've been to Tokyo a couple of times to know the score. Singapore is kinda westernized but does have Asian customs and definitely law regulations. I feel a lot safer in Singapore than anywhere else in the West.

Singapore is a unique destination - especially by SE Asisn standards.
Yes... it is small, expensive, and has a 'western' vibe. All true.
However, it is a fantastic travel destination for short stays (3 or 4) days in order to catch your breath while on your way to Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, or other parts of South East Asia.
In contrast to those places, Singapore is incredibly safe and clean and English is spoken almost everywhere by everyone. All signs are also in English. You will have no communication problems in Singapore.
You don't have to worry about scams or petty crimes, like purse snatching, because they are virtually nonexistent. There are no illegal drugs or drug related problems.
The laws are strict and are strictly enforced - but visitors have nothing to worry about. Singapore isn't a police state. I doubt you will ever even see a policeman.
The accommodations are world class and you will find no better tasting food (of all varieties) any where in the world.
Food at the hawker centers are excellent and provide good value for your money.
Public transportation is also excellent and also a good value.
Singapore also has one of the best and most efficient airports in the world - ditto Singapore Airlines.
In short, Singapore is well worth a visit at any time of the year - but be prepared for extreme heat and humidity at all times.
Yes, I have used a lot of superlatives in this review, but if you visit, you will see exactly what I mean.
Do yourself a favor, give Singapore a try - you won't regret it. It is a unique, remarkable travel destination - not to be missed! ✌

But to the people who are married with kids, Singapore is safe and education is good for their kids. But as the kids grow to young teens & teens, most of them will feel the pressure & too much stress from school is not good too. To the tourists, it is good for them to come to Singapore for a visit. I'm a Singaporean. It's okay. Everyone's different so we don't expect everyone to like Singapore. Some say that we don't have the Asian vibe. Maybe it's because we speak mostly English here. A lot of tourists don't realise that we're a multiracial society. So English is the main language used here. Even in schools. Everything is taught in English.

Singapore 🇸🇬 also known variously as the “Lion City” or “Garden City,” the latter for its many parks and tree-lined streets-has also been called “instant Asia” because it offers the tourist an expeditious glimpse into the cultures brought to it by immigrants from all parts of Asia. It is not your typical South East Asia city that you have visited i.e. Thailand🇹🇭, Philippines 🇵🇭, Malaysia 🇲🇾, Indonesia 🇮🇩, Vietnam 🇻🇳, Cambodia 🇰🇭, Myanmar 🇲🇲 or even Brunei 🇧🇳. A combination of Modern Architecture surrounded by old British 🇬🇧 colonial buildings with lush foliage on the skyscrapers. Very westernized and contemporary yet still preserves the old rustic looks of old village settings. The price of accommodation and food tends to be on the pricey side if you dine on a mostly touristy flank. Go to hawker centers for cheaper options in Singapore 🇸🇬. There is plenty of it here and to approximate is beyond comparison.

as a singaporean, i can understand why it's boring. even for us locals, we're run out of places to visit or things to do. the tourist attractions are packed right smack in the city. you get the museums, the marina bay area, the singapore river area and sprinkles of supposedly what's left of our local culture like chinatown and little india. truth is, we've cleaned up so much that even for locals we have no idea what the singapore culture is. food is priced slightly above affordable now from $6-$8 which is a lot actually. other attractions are sentosa island and our zoo or the night safaris. besides all that we really have nothing special as compared to our southeast asian neighbours. that's why singaporeans love to travel to johor bahru in malaysia for weekend trips or even fly over to indonesia. it's an efficient city-state but it has no soul. we're too cleaned up to appear beautiful in tourists eyes but everyone here is secretly wishing they could relocate. this city-state is worth visiting for 2-3 days and anything more than that you'll get bored fast.

@@nurulnadX maybe one day i'll head there, haven't visit australia yet. the boring-ness i mentioned also stems from not having enough nature places to go to besides all that's been designated. we don't really have a space to escape the city life unless maybe heading to st. john's island or ubin. we're too manicured so that affects the way we interact in social settings as well. we really do appear as soul-less folks just on autopilot most of the time. as a kid who had the 90s to grow up with, the changes has been too much too fast. maybe i'm being nostalgic cos i miss those days but singapore now is just too plastic. everything is squeezed into specific areas like kampong gelam, chinatown and little india. outside of all these places where can we go to completely unwind? orchard is dead, sentosa's too expensive and the nature reserve's will always be packed on weekends cos that's the only place we all go too for respite! 😆 no doubt we're efficient in a lot of things and i appreciate that. it's just finding little pockets of spaces where we can socialise as is, being a little carefree from the day to day and relax. we don't have much over here. hence we relocate else where after a few years of hard work and saving up.

Singapore, as a travel destination, is not for the low-budget backpacker's mindset.
Expensive is relative. The people who include Singapore in their travel itinerary have budgeted for it. They want to see and experience the cosmopolitan environment, the orderliness, the blend of the different peoples of the world, their cultures, languages, religions, foods, dressing, the respect extended to different ones, etc. Singapore is a microcosm of the world, a melting pot in a harmonious blend of people the world over.
Small and boring? Well, if you're myopic in your worldview at this juncture, we beg to differ. When you've traveled further, get older, acquired some nest eggs, you’ll find the convenience that Singapore offers is unbeatable. Convenience is the buzzword in Singapore for all peoples. Another is efficiency. Everything works on this island.
Westernised? Cuts both ways. If you're English-speaking, one major hurdle is overcome immediately. English is spoken and used everywhere by everyone in every nook and corner and by all establishments. On the surface, from the outset, Singapore portrays a westernised society. Scratch the surface, and you'll find entrenched deep racial, religious, and cultural norms of the major compositions of the Singaporean and foreigners at play in a well-managed harmonious setting and space extended to all.

I don’t disagree with anything you said, but the three points are valid imo.
    1. Even if we just compare Singapore to other cities (not countries) in Asia, in terms of really unique sites, it is somewhat boring. It has nice malls, restaurants, and the amusement parks, but is that really something to go all the way to Singapore and spend so much money on?
    2. Piggybacking off point one. For what’s being offered in Singapore, it is certainly expensive compared to other major Asian cities that offer the same things.
    3. That you even have to point to a “Chinatown” or a “Little India” sorta underlines the point about people saying it’s very or too westernized. Yes, Chinatown has lots of Chinese culture and Little India has lots of Indian culture, but outside those places (I.e.-the majority of it), what culture are we looking at?
It’s no shade though. 😂 I love Singapore and I love Singaporeans even more. ❤

I will definitely choose TW for a 3-4 day trip instead of Singapore. Here are the reasons: the cost, living standard and public facilities are not much different between 2 countries; TW's climate is more comfortable; both of them are island but TW's size is much bigger with combination of nature, tradition, modernization experiences; street food is easiser to find in many places with diverse ranges in TW. Many TW people can speak English, even local vendors, but if they don't, no problem, I have Google translate 🎉

My wife is from Singapore and still has extended family there, so we visit a lot. We have found quite a lot of things to do there, and that excludes the common things like Gardens by the Bay and the glitz at Sentosa. We’ve found a lot of natural beauty in Singapore, from the Botanical Gardens to MacRitchie Reservoir to the Southern Ridges, there are great hiking opportunities (as long as you get an early start). In terms of westernization, if you get away from the core areas and visit what I believe Singaporeans call the heartland, you get a much more traditional, but still upscale, SE Asian vibe. The key to visiting Singapore is to get out into the neighborhoods. Can’t help a lot with the expense, as Singapore does have a very high cost of living and hotels are quite expensive. We don’t stay at five star hotels and we don’t stay in the core areas. Plenty of good, less expensive hotels near Chinatown. If you insist on eating at name brand restaurants, just like anywhere, you’ll pay a premium. But hawker centers and kopitiams serve great food at a fraction of the price. You can pay a couple hundred USD’s for a seafood meal at Jumbo, or you can pay less than $100 for a similar meal at a seafood place connected to a market, and even less for BBQ at at places like Serangoon Gardens or the East Coast Hawker Center.

I’m Singaporean and I came back after 7 years and I feel Singapore is starting to become a place for how I remembered.
One major issue is the society. The people imo has become an “entitled “ society. People seem to be less caring.
Thailand on the other hand, me just learning the basic language just forces you to be polite with the “ka and krub “ it works. It actually makes the place welcoming and respectful to others.
The activity’s in Singapore is plentiful, is the culture is starting to become bad,

Honesty, I really hope fewer tourists come to Singapore. Singapore is just so crowded as it is to travel daily, which is a nightmare. With fewer tourists coming, at least we can breathe while taking public transport.

I am a veteran licensed tour guide in Singapore and have worked n many major events (F1, Zoukout, Fashion week, Gourmet festivals). I can say with certainty people who complaint that Singapore is too small, hot, and boring are mostly the "tight budget travellers" staying in Geylang, Balestier, or Lavender airbnb. Most can't afford to splurge on average luxury dining and attractions to made their trip a memorable, and why won't they feel miserable? When you travel with ready and spare cash, you're pampering yourself and your love ones.

Yeah Singapore is small but for short trip like 3 or 4 days, you can still enjoy a lot of things there. The only thing that kinda turns me off most of the time (i am a frequent visitor to SG) is most but not all are very rude or impatient so i kept saying sorry or need to be extra cautious when dealing with them when i was there 😅 but to summarize it, it is still a worth to visit country !

These reasons are all valid despite your responses. I had a lot more fun in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam because of the rawness, the loose and chaotic vibe, and the many authentic and historic parts of these countries. Singapore is too much like being here in Australia, it's just a tidy modern city with Australian prices and strict rules like Australia. It's a family friendly destination, but isn't exactly fun for young people or uniquely interesting apart from the massive manufactured tourist attractions.

I feel like it's worse for Malaysia as it's neither here nor there: it's not as exotic as other Asian countries, while at the same time also doesn't attract tourists who prefer a more urban/modern/westernised country like Singapore. Most of the time it's just a detour for people visiting places like Thailand or Vietnam.

Every time I visit Singapore, I am always fascinated by the different experiences that I encounter.
Honestly, I feel like in a paradise.
I like the food, the scene, the people, and all others.
As if I am at the Bonifacio Global Center (BGC), Philippines, multiplied how many times.
In Singapore, I don’t worry about going from one place to another. I feel so safe and tranquil. I can hear Mass and feel comfortable because English is spoken everywhere.
Actually, the food servings at the Hawkers Center are good for two persons.
I feel so safe in Singapore. You can leave anything and when you come back to the place where you left your things, surely you will find them on the same spot.
Well, we can learn from the story about the elephant and the four (4) blind people.
Mama, my mother is always telling us, “ food for you may be poison to others.”
