Singapore's control of immigrantion is smart and pragmatic. Look at what has happened to Sweden and Canada. Both welcomed indiscriminate immigration with open arms, citing tolerance and compassion as the backbone of their culture. Crime and violence have now escalated in both these once idyllic countries, with Sweden now having the 3rd highest gun violence in EU. The centre right Swedish govt who came into power 2 years ago, is now trying very hard to stem the uncontrolled violence and resolve the crisis caused by the previous left wing government. Here in Canada, the liberal Trudeau government has now backtracked on its 'welcome to Canada' , 'free for all' immigration policy because citizens are angry at the consequent escalating homelessness, crime and violence. He's right. I am a Swiss born American. I grew up in New York City and finished high school in Singapore. I recently moved to Switzerland to discover my "birth country" and I have to say I was somewhat disappointed. This disappointment comes not from anything inherently wrong with the place but rather, this idealization of a perfect country which upon arriving was shattered within the first 6 months in the country. Like he mentions, this outdated idea of Switzerland feels as such because it is exactly that; outdated. I have traveled in Europe extensively and have to say that while Switzerland is still in the lead in regards to many metrics used to measure the quality of life, many countries are catching up; some have even surpassed Switzerland in many areas. What I have noticed in my 3 years here is that many locals, businesses and agencies hide behind the label "Swiss Quality" which seems to be losing it's value. Many Swiss seem more focused on maintaining the state of affairs instead of focusing on remaining competitive, in other words, "too rich too care". If you're looking for a tax break and a place to settle, I can definitely see the appeal, but for an exciting business environment and "cutting edge" opportunities I would probably look elsewhere.
I don’t really understand your point about lack of exciting business environment and cutting edge opportunities. In the Zurich area there’s perhaps the best startup scene in all Europe, all the major tech companies (google, meta, nvidia, microsoft) have opened r&d departments in the area so I think it would be difficult to do better than that.
@@DaniloBrancaleone-qu8og Zurich has its strengths, especially in niches like blockchain and MedTech, but calling it Europe’s best startup scene is a stretch. And while having Google or Microsoft open R&D offices is cool, that’s not the same as fostering startups. Interesting viewpoints but I really need to call this out. Guy complains about lax Swiss immigration policies, then opens up a firm to enable pay2win residency schemes for rich people to treat Singapore like a tax saving dumpster. The irony there is palpable. You cannot make this up. Is Oliver Curtis one of his clients?
@leeashernolan According to heartlanders in Switzerland, they despise anyone who doesn't learn Swiss German, Swiss French or Swiss Italian. But in general, Romanians, Portuguese, and Turkish people trigger them the most. One thing Singapore should learn from Switzerland is to enforce learning one of the main ethnic languages to B1 level to qualify for residency. English doesn't count (same in Switzerland). It's doing a good job making sure there's a minimum level of assimilation.
I think he is talking about EU citizens being freely migrating to Switzerland, no matter how qualified they are, but its extremely hard for non EU highly skilled and qualified migrants to emigrate. Singapores policy is different. Its strategic and pragmatic. It only allows highly educated, multi language, and qualified people to emigrate into Singapore that can positively contribute to society
@@UlassG You mean the Schengen region? People can enter and leave really but residency is not easy. CH has a way higher bar than Singapore, like demanding B1 level of at least one of the ethnic languages to even qualify. I don't see any of the immigrants in Singapore having to learn Malay, Chinese, Tamil. English can get you around, like in Switzerland, but to be a resident you have to clear a minimal bar of assimilation for social cohesion. Neighbors get to vote on your eligibility, so you can't be an ex-convict who paid their way into relocation.

I feel very safe in Japan. Japan is arguably the safest country in the world if you consider the large population of over 100 million. Singapore has only 6 million. Smaller countries are much easier to control and manage. Look at all those safe countries in the world, they are all small counties. For large counties, Singapore cannot be a model.
What am I missing here? Why are people talking as if people can just become permanent residents in Singapore without either working there or investing many millions of dollars? I've read the criteria over and over again, and I see no path to residence in Singapore without marrying a national, getting a work visa or investing millions and millions of dollars in a company or fund there.
Just paying for a plane ticket and move there? In any country in the world, even the poorest ones, to settle there you need one of the options you mentioned, it’s just that some are more demanding than others with some exceptions like having an EU passport etc.

30:40 in 2011 or 2012, I bumped in to PM Lee Hsien Loong at waterfront park and said hello. He was there just with his secretary while two police officers were at car park. In the years and decades to come, the price for safety is incalculable for any nation. That's where Singapore stands out. But 'safety' was nurtured from the wisom of the early founding fathers and being continued by the present leaders. Singaporeans must never forget that though they lack the natural resources, it is the honest, non-corrupt leadership that has made Singapore a safe place for investors and companies to set up in Singapore. Treasure the good leadership that we take for granted. Look what's happening around the world. Count our blessings.
Im a born Singaporean and still lives in SG but if I have to choose to migrate than maybe Malaysia, Australia or NZ. But right now I cant really do that because of age catching up and yes I got lots of disagreement on how PAP is running the country. In Singapore most people can live comfortably because they still secure a good job but once youre out of job than it will be hell. It is still lucky for me and my wife because we are still maintaining our good jobs. That guy in the video he loves the security and stability in SG for his business that make him loves staying here, so if you got income or money obviously its SG.

As a German citizen who has lived in Switzerland for the past 20 years and left 6 months ago, I can 100% confirm what this gentleman is saying about the current status and the trajectory of Switzerland these days. Unfortunately Switzerland is going in the same direction as the rest of the EU, albeit a few years behind, the direction is still wrong.
I disagree about small countries. Estonia, a tiny country with a small population, but now with huge taxes, which has made and is making enemies in the face of Russia. And which discriminates against its own people. Estonia used to be the best country on this planet for me, but now everyone is fleeing from here who can
So true what he said. Switzerland lost banking secrecy and neutrality. Not to mention the disaster with CS bankrupcy. Today Switzerland is effectively a EU country. What is the point of paying high fees to swiss banks for what in return? What makes today a swiss bank different from an EU bank? Nothing. I dont understand why people still believe in old steretypes rather than real facts.
Singapore is a very nice country. The people are friendly, and it is super safe there. Lots of good food options. Unfortunately, learned this part the hard way as I gained over 10 kg during an 8-day stay there.
Ahh so applying various citizenships to save on taxes that help your country. These rich leeches are part of the problem that causes country needed to raise their taxes on the common and poor.
Grüezi, he must have been living in Zurich City or Basel, worst places in Switzerland.😅 But he has many valid Points I agree. However he must have a lot of money to choose Singapore as a settlement Country. Alone a Car Permit costs 106k USD in Singapore because the government doesn't want you to drive a Car.

Look at France and Germany, people have fallen into nihilism and self-hatred. Do not take example from these models.
I been to Uruguay. As an american i dont see myself living in that country. Too expensive and too small. I would rather have a bigger beach house somewhere in Rio de Janeiro Brasil or the interior of Minas Gerais and have a big farm, raise livestock and fish farming. But I guess its not for everyone. Having a passport that can bring you anywhere withouts securing visa is such a wondering thing to have.

I speak Portugese so it’s very easy for me to roam around. Goodluck. Not everything you heard is correct. You need to experience it yourself before you can make a conclusion.
Great news about SG. Just don't for get to mention the 60% discrimination tax the government charges foreigners when they would like to buy a home. Other countries ask for investment which is fair, SG just asks for a donation.
For Singapore right now the super rich, leveraging the housing where people are supposed to buy or get a house, but they jack up the price so much to the point that is illegal, don’t know is there any new update

Singapore does not take care of its poorer older citizens. That is why I saw senior citizens sweeping roads and working in other jobs as they are forced to do so
@ lots of my friends left Switzerland. It was not Swiss fault it was our fault to go there. Swiss never invited us. It was our mistake. I have nothing to say for Swiss. Maybe it’s good for Muslim people in my experience. For tourists its ok, but absolutely not settle down or for work in Switzerland
@justingriffin2546 In the US, the basic version of the flagship, iPhone 16 Pro (128 GB), was priced at $999, the same as last year’s flagship. Singapore needs 5.70 days to get the phone, whereas Malaysia needs 25.3 days. Yes, Malaysia is cheaper for those with strong currency countries, but not most locals who live and work there.
I love your content. It seems so many Europeans and North Americans are relocating to SEA, but there still is a large flow of people from SEA moving to Europe and NA. I'm guessing that the flow out of SEA is greater than into SEA. Do you have any data on the numbers, and when do you anticipate the flow into SEA to exceed the number of people leaving?
Barely anyone from SEA actually settles down in western countries. Majority of SEA people who move to western countries are students who study/live there temporary or migrant workers from poorer countries in SEA like Cambodia or Laos, who are also temporary workers. As a Malaysian, lots of people from Malaysia who settled in our countries in the past few days are now coming back here. And anyways, in 2023, our government handed out over 150,000 immigrant visas to foreigners looking to settle here, meanwhile our general population is only 32 million, and as of 2024, the number of issued immigrant visas are up by 20%
Happy for you! As a Singaporean who's been living in Switzerland, I can unfortunately confirm what you say. Having said that, local Singaporeans often joke that we have to export ourselves overseas and import ourselves back in as a foreign talent, to finally enjoy Singaporean citizenship.

Interesting viewpoints but I really need to call this out.
Guy complains about lax Swiss immigration policies, then opens up a firm to enable pay2win residency schemes for rich people to treat Singapore like a tax saving dumpster. The irony there is palpable. You cannot make this up. Is Oliver Curtis one of his clients?
when people complain about immigration policies they are complaining about a specific type of people immigrating.
The first minute of the video shows the kind of racist he is
Good video max ! Another informative one. He is knowledgeable in his biz and if he has chosen Singapore, then the people who are contemplating or already there, including yourselves, must have already made a better Plan B choice.
Chalked up another learning journey from your vid, Max, thanks!

I love being Singaporean but I hate our weather (same as the rest of tropical countries). I want to be in a temperate country. However no country, not even Japan, Korea or Taiwan have this level of security. Our punishments for criminals are rightfully strict.
That the trade off that you have to accept.
@@richardchak696 It's literally my only gripe and dealbreaker for not moving to Singapore (or rather, attempting to move to Singapore) in a heartbeat. I visited there recently, and man, it was hot and humid.

Yes some places in Asia like SG and HK would be perfect if it wasn't for the weather. I can't stand the HUMID heat 🥲
@@Satricon00 I replied to you, but Max decided that any comments critical of his videos must be immediately deleted. You know I remember learning in Social Studies as a student, things we were learning from the Swiss system, I feel strange seeing this come full circle now.
So he basically gave the finger to the country that invested in him, to save money on taxes. Claiming that Switzerland isn’t a safe country is ridiculous.
Exactly
A traitor
After hearing the first 2 minutes of him talking I already know what he would vote if he still lived in switzerland and let me tell you is nothing progressive
He is a wise man good knowledge with different countries culture and policies. All good people are welcome to be Singaporean regardless of race, language or religion.
Our leader LKY was and still is the reason that Singapore exist and prosper. He built a good governing system with righteous leaders with wisdom and LSL has continued and carry the PAP torch and look at the monies poured into building our home, infrastructure, better systems and helping the local businesses...UK and USA had tried to attack our beliefs about gun and drug and justice system ..but our leaders defend our system and now the world leaders are envying our safe and secure nation.

Switzerland has quite a few cases of not being neutral since WW2, anyone who knows history proper knows that, Switzerland just appears to be neutral, so recent events is not exactly new or that Switzerland suddenly became not neutral.
Examples?
Stop talking nonsense
30:40 in 2011 or 2012, I bumped in to PM Lee Hsien Loong at waterfront park and said hello. He was there just with his secretary while two police officers were at car park. Keep bumping in to Senior Minister Zaqy often under our housing block. Once literally ran in to him when I came out of the lift lol. Its a very special place when you can bump in to the senior minister of state for defence and manpower and deputy leader of the house and hold a casual conversation right outside your house. Specially for a nobody like me lol. But by god these men are wonderful. Compared to shitstains we had for politicians in my birth country, these people are phenomenal.

This is an interesting vid for me. Thanks for sharing - learning something new everyday! I have heard of this but only know I have a slightly better understanding. And thanks for sharing these vids from the expat POV.

Ahh so applying various citizenships to save on taxes that help your country. These rich leeches are part of the problem that causes country needed to raise their taxes on the common and poor.
Hmmm, Swiss allows multiple citizenships, more flexible. Singapore did sanction Russia if not mistaken.
Singaporean doesn’t allow multiple citizenships.
Grüezi, he must have been living in Zurich City or Basel, worst places in Switzerland.😅
But he has many valid Points I agree.
However he must have a lot of money to choose Singapore as a settlement Country.
Alone a Car Permit costs 106k USD in Singapore because the government doesn't want you to drive a Car.

Look at France and Germany, people have fallen into nihilism and self-hatred. The fabric and harmony of societies has been decaying over the past decades in Europe but this is the product of the wonderful globalism and "humanism" I guess... Sounds like decline to me.
I am married to a Brazilian but he doesn’t want to live there as per safety and security and I must say it is true

Why people always thought that the cost of living in Malaysia is lower than Singapore?
Because it is.
Definitely cheaper in Malaysia.

Taiwan is definitely not sound economically. People there have been suffering from low stagnant wages amid high real estate cost.
One problem is Singapore does not permit dual nationality.
