There is a parallel (or rhyme) today with these Musim Taifas making aliances with the Christians Kingdom against each other! Despite the inherent demographic weakness of the Saqaliba Taifas that the video mentioned, they wielded a greatly outsized military power thanks to their origins as members of the Caliph's elite Sclavonian Guard. The Taifa of Denia alone conquered the Balearic Islands and partially conquered Sardinia, while also raiding Italy. One wonders what they might have done if the stable flow of slaves from the Rus hadn't collapsed along with the Caliphate.
    As always, amazing video.

    • @laenorvelaryon5835

      True but I don't think Denia had any chance at further expansion because their initial martial edge wore off quite early, all historical accounts agree that Seville was the strongest taifa, followed by Granada then Zaragoza (which conquered Denia) and Badajoz, but none had any chance at reaching the power of the fallen caliphate.

    Great video, as always! I'd only point out that the fall of the Emirate of Saraqusta took place in the early 12th century. The Emirate was annexed to the Almoravid Empire in 1110, and the city was finally captured by Alfonso I of Aragon in December 1118, not in 1086 CE as you state in 8:36.

  • @laenorvelaryon5835
    @laenorvelaryon5835 5 років тому +5

    Thank you Thank you Thank you!!! I was offline for days and then got in and saw this, so happy!!! Great video!
    As for the military weakness of the taifas, it's neither shocking nor confusing, their annual budget was forked over heavy tributes (pariah) paid to the northern kingdoms and bribes paid to double cross each other, Alfonso was a genious at playing them against each other.
    Treachery was very common, Ibn Amar was notoriously treacherous, he even turned against his king Al mu'tamid, but they all did it.
    And in this climate no taifa could commit all its forces to one front because they could almost always count on a neighbour to stab them in the back (which was true)
    Also Thanks for presenting it from a political view and avoiding the "they fell because of wine and music" cliché.
    PS: Alfonso never actually conquered zaragoza

    • @AlMuqaddimahYT
      @AlMuqaddimahYT  5 років тому +3

      Alfonso didn't conquer Zaragoza. I misspoke there. He did lay siege to it but it was interrupted by the Almoravids landing on Iberia. I have mentioned that in the next video which will be up soon, hopefully.
      I get your point about the Pariahs but money isn't the only way to raise an army, especially in light of a Christian threat, faith could've been used but to me, it feels like there was just a lack of capable soldiers and generals, somehow. Maybe I'm wrong.

    • @laenorvelaryon5835
      @laenorvelaryon5835 5 років тому +1

      @@AlMuqaddimahYT They say faith moves mountains but I guess I'm one of the skeptics lol, without immediate self interest there wouldn't be a reason strong enough to enlist, faith wasn't lacking then, and ulemas and imams kept pointing out the dangers of muslim infighting and the dangers of the christian north. Also there was no shortage of good generals and strategists, each taifa had its heroes, but they were fighting each other, never united on one front.
      Even in modern days, in countries where there's no mandatory conscription, most of those who enlist are those without good prospects in life.
      If you get to the emirate of Granada, there's a whole volunteers rank in the Granadan army, something never mentionned before since the time of the Rashidun caliphate, I think because by this time, people really thought "this is it, the last stretch of muslim land in Andalus" but that's just my guess.
      Sorry I kinda babble a lot. Also can't wait for the Almoravid episode!!!!

You falsely claimed that I thought the world revolved about me because I criticized his egocentric response. Furthermore, his "request to change" was made in jest. Yes, it's the middle of the night but I doubt he was really expecting him to change the schedule that he uploaded. He was merely commenting on it as was I. In neither of our responses did I see any serious expectation that he'd truly change his schedule. That delusion is in your own mind. As far as why he should change, I already addressed that. Islam promotes tolerance
    (Sahih International)
    Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
    -Surah Al-Mumtahanah, verse 8
    Islam promotes kindness
    ۚإِنَّ رَحۡمَتَ ٱللَّهِ قَرِيبٞ مِّنَ ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ
    Indeed, the mercy of Allah is near to the doers of good.
    -Surah Al-A'raf, verse 56

    The hardwork and talent is undeniable but this was one of your less interesting videos. Please don't throw too much data e.g. names of ppl, tribes, places, etc at once as not all of us are historians with super memories. It's hard to keep track of all of those names (that combined with your fast speech) so it made even a well made video like this boring for me.
