+1 for a “Zero” video. My spouse is a Type II diabetic trying to get off of diet sodas, so he is temporarily drinking Powerade Zero. He chose it over Gatorade because it has Sucralose and Gatorade has Aspartame...he felt Sucralose would be the lesser of the two evils.
Work construction in the hot sun for a handful of years plus sports all my life. Without even looking at the labels I know gatorade works better. When you’re drinking minimum 6 sport drinks and 6 waters everyday to stay hydrated you can tell. I’ve tried multiple times with swapping out gatorade with powerade and you can tell in how you feel. Also have done just water and just sports drinks... that doesn’t work either. You need a 1:1 ratio of both to be hydrated and keep your energy up. (Im talking about sweating literally for 10 hours, drenched in sweat all day)
Drink 100% juice lol it has a lot of natural sugar. I personally want some vegetables in the juice but there are ones with just fruit. Better than gatorade or Powerade.
I agree that maximum performance requires sugar. The issue is that we (including real athletes) over dose on sugar throughout our lives and careers, becoming hooked/dependant, resulting in long term health damages. (Notice pro athletes after retirement). Must be smarter with sugar and use it as a tool and not food.
Is that why real athletes don’t drink anything with sugar during games? The Gatorade coolers and bottles you see on the sidelines of every professional sport are full of nothing but water but you would know that if you were a real athlete.
BODYARMOR is the BEST sports drink now. It uses coconut water, lots of potassium, almost no salt, and the Lyte version uses stevia for sweetener. It has much more vitamins than these two old drinks.
Please go into depth on this subject. I like to use Gatorade zero to add potassium to as it mixes well flavor wise and is a alternative for making sure I reach my daily potassium intake.
His drink has almost no sodium. If you are a couch potato this is OK for you. Today it was near 100F outside and I played a game called pickleball for 2.5 hours and my total sweat loss was 6 pounds and 1 ounce. That is 2.87 liters of sweat. If I am average that means I lost at least 2,500mg of sodium. Some of my weight loss might have been burned calories though. But most weight loss is probably sweat.
During long bicycling rides after 60 miles if I drank gatorade or poweraid my legs would start cramping 30 min to an hour later. In 2008 I switched from oatmeal for breakfast to eggs cooked with butter. Then used an electrolyte powder without any sugars during the ride. Cramping ceased and after a 100 mile ride did not feel wiped out. No need for a 2hr nap post ride.
I used mountain dew soda and I was able to exercise more but Gatorade and Powerade would always tire me out and make me more thirsty when I drank them. Mountain dew did the opposite which is odd though.
I think this video deserves a remake. Sugars aren't just used for energy they also help brain function. When you've drained all your glucose your brain doesn't function at its best. Im here because I play sports and have realized this and am looking for the better option between these two. Also, it seems powerade has updated their recipe. The ingredients and amounts are different than what I am seeing today on powerade.
Been doing keto for about 3yrs now. Down 100lbs, work out regularly and recreational softball. Powerade Zero is my go to drink, it never slowed down my progress. I don't think anyone doing Keto, even a beginner, would think regular Powerade or Gatorade was Keto friendly..both products were too sweet for me even before I started Keto..Just my 2 cents..
You can make your own electrolyte drink with water lemon juice apple cider vinegar and some Celtic Sea salt which is really good for the summer if you're outside and you're perspiring a lot you need to replace all your electrolytes.
This from EPA website : "Glyphosate is a widely used herbicide that controls broadleaf weeds and grasses. It has been registered as a pesticide in the U.S. since 1974." WTF? Registered as PESTicide but used as HERBicide?
I drink low sugar Gatorade. It helped me with a headache. I don’t know how? I am drinking it after my runs but I only take 4-5 sips out of the bottle and keep it for next day or two. I was thinking drinking it would help with leg cramps after run by replacing my electrolytes. But in the back of my mind I am thinking about stopping it. Glad the video came out right on time.
Dr Berg is really cool. Thats why I listen to him. Great advice doc! It's really cool that I started watching you and found out one of my friends watches your videos as well and buys your products too.
Powerade really helps me at the gym. I do relatively heavy workouts and live in a warm part of the world. If you are working out for an hour with weights and you are a sweater than take some Powerade or Gatorade, but water it down at the drink fountain. That is what I do. Stops you getting a dry mouth from dehydration and will see another 15 or so minutes on workout. I also have a glass of beet juice an hour or so before gym.
I like Powerade Zero, I absolutely love Powerade Zero. I enjoy nearly each flavor. My favorite flavor is Mixed Berry, the blue one. I like Powerade more than Gatorade.
Hey doc great video. I like vitamin water more and their vitamin water ZERO. HAS NO SUGAR and is sweetened with erythritol and stevia. I think it’s the only major brand name waters that use them as their sweetener. I think Powerade and Gatorade zero use sucralose and aspartame. Maybe you can do a follow up video on the “zero” versions of these ???
You mentioned what we should drink but didn't give any specifics. I personally can only drink so much plain water before I'm done. I have tried sugar free water flavorings like crystal light, but I'm fairly certain they aren't good for me either.
south carolina construction worker here. i fill up a 52 ounce container with ice and put just a lightly sweeted tea onto the ice to give the ice a medium to melt into... but here is the magic secret.... separately I keep a jar of pickle juice and do a double shot of t every hour or so to replace the salt I am losing thru sweat. I swear it works like a charm on 100 degree days.
Happy that I just purchased your electrolyte powder. Was stressing seriously doing yard work. Did some ACV + water and what a power- house. Got the electrolyte powder in mail Saturday it really is affective - easy and refreshing. Has become my go to drink. I feel so 😎 drinking it. Okay I’m a senior-senior but wow. 👍
We have no idea what is actually in these drinks asides from what they put on the label. Make your own drinks and add your own electrolytes. I long for the day when Monsanto is no more.
Bro seeing that old school Gatorade lemon lime hit me right in the nostalgia. I really didnt like red or yellow, always been a blue or white kind of guy but youll drink any cold Ade when its 100+ degrees outside.
Athletes aren’t necessarily burning or wanting to burn fat. Sugar and other carbohydrates are used as short term energy reserves. Also if you want avoid high sugar then that would mean using some other artificial sweetener that still maybe be stored as types of fat. I think that there is an argument that these drinks are too sweet and you can cut down on some of the sugars and make a case bump up vitamins, minerals and other essentials. Just my opinion
During winter, when hiking in the mountains, I always carry a bottle of Gatorade or Isostar around exactly because it has plenty of sugar in it. Sugar acts as an efficient anti-freeze protection keeping this stuff liquid down to -8C, at about -10C it get's slushy but still drinkable (saving me the additional weight of a 2nd thermos flask). Plus when it is cold I sometimes just need the extra energy to make it to the summit (and back down) safely. When you're running low on sugar you loose power, concentration goes down, you start making mistakes,... so it has it's purpose.
Tried powerade when gatorade was out of stock ... something felt very off with the taste - very chemical and very acidic, not thirst quenching at all, quite the opposite .... the worse was lime. The orange one tasted like a sweetened vitamin C powder i used to drink as a child when i had a cold. Not good.
It’s insane that these can claim to replace electrolytes when they give you such a tiny amount of potassium and salt that your body needs when you’ve lost a lot. I have leaky gut. I have no large intestines (crohns disease). I’ve been told to drink sports drink instead of water but lately I’ve been drinking coconut water. It costs a lot more but the benefits are much better.
Water, plain old water is the only drink that can truly quench thirst. All that sugar in those energy drinks are bound to make you thirstier and unhealthier too. Be careful with too much water though as it may deplete your electrolyte reserve, particularly Sodium.
I thought Gatorade removed HFCS years ago. Powerade never makes it in my cart. Body armor my choice. Actually has 3 flavors that have 3 g sugar for half bottle. Uses stevia. High K and low Na. Added bonus is the synthetic vitamins. Can you give your analysis of body armor Dr Berg?
@@Drberg I did a brief search, from what I've rea! Coconut water is a great hydrator, acts similarly but is much healthier than Sports Drinks, less calories, sugars, a great amount more of potassium but less sodium. The low amount of the sodium electrolyte makes it not the best hydrator for rigorous prolonged sporting activities. However, adding seasalt will resolve this issue, do be cautious if doing so, as adding too much salt to drinks will lead unpleasant gastrointestinal side affects. However, it just may the best healthy/ natural alternative none the less!
What powerade were you getting the ingredients from? While watching I decided to check the list on my Powerade bottles and the two flavors I had both used corn syrup for the sugar. You don't ever need sports drinks for normal exercise. But most people need some kind of sugar during an endurance event, such as a marathon. Yes, after you deplete your glycogen reserve, your body can switch to fat. But fat delivers energy slower than glycogen. Unless you are okay with slowing down or walking the last fourth of a marathon, you need that sugar. Some claim that they are able to train to maximize fat adaptation but realistically, most need carbs during an actual endurance event. The real problem is that people think they need a sports drink for 30 minutes the treadmill, etc. Worse is when people drink it just as a treat. It's funny to see Powerade at fast food restaurants along with the other sodas. Why would it ever need to be there?

I don't know when, but dextrose is added to so many types of processed meat now a days. Even what was Keto friendly artisan dried sausages, the type used for tapas, contains dextrose.
Can you do an updated version with Powerade Zero and Gatorade Zero Sugar? Also if they are okay on Keto? I've been doing keto for a year and a half, and am down 200 pounds. I drink ACV in the morning for breakfast, lunch and then dinner. I either do OMAD or 18/6 daily. On the weekends I eat breakfast on saturday and sunday to "Shock" my body so that it is not too used to not having 3 meals.
I know it is bad for you but why NFL NBA NHL, etc, players and many professional athletes drink those stuffs (Gatorade most of the time)? It may gives people a wrong concepts of superstars drinking it, it got to have something good about it, more energy, more vitality, etc.
Very informative, BUT, most people who work out, at least that I know and see drink the, "Zero" in both products, so PLEASE COMPARE THE ZERO POWERADE TO GATORADE. Personally, I prefer the no sugar Pedialyte....
What about pedialytes? I drink it when my muscles are cramping really bad and it always stops the cramps in less than 5 minutes, but i worry about the sugar content. Can you comment on this, please?
As a runner I knew all this was bad to drink it long term so never actually bought it, but admit that on long distance race days I use to accept this garbage starting the 15km ( about 9miles) thinking it was going to make a difference in the 35Km(21.7 mi) .. well I was right but the difference is it prevents me from burning fat and making me slower . Never again, not even a bit thanks to your videos .. please Keep It Up !
I generally never drink fizzy but this is interesting. I'd like to see the difference between coke and Pepsi, normal. Also I believe that sugar free raises insulin levels anyway as it's a body's natural reaction.
My brother and I take a bottle of homemade RO water with Sea Salt, Iodine Salt, Himalayan Salt and Trace Minerals added. We hang gutters in the hot weather and when we feel like we are starting to fade we take a sip or two of this concentrated salt water and we come back to life and have great energy. We are up and down ladders and burn up a lot of energy. I'm 54 and my brother is 64 years old and just lately the Trace Minerals we add to our RO water has cleared all pain in my brothers knees. We eat at home with all prepared GOD's foods. No processed foods with chemicals anymore. Love 4Truth!
What do you recommend for a recreational marathon runner, for a typical 5 km - 20 km training run? A water + lemon juiced by oneself? Does that cover the need for electrolytes? Thank you so much for answering!
You have to look at the ingredients, as G-Zero likely has some sugar alcohols that may not be good for you either. I'd just drink SmartWater or have water and take electrolyte supplements that don't have any sugar or additives. At least that's my opinion.
Water. Pickle juice. Water with added electrolytes. Gatorade is not meant to be consumed during games which is why no professional athlete drinks it during a event. Most organizations in sports don’t even have it available to athletes. Teams get paid to drink water out of Gatorade jugs/bottles so fans like you think it’s beneficial.
He writes 35 g for potassium and 45 g for potassium and calls them milligrams. That’s incorrect. The lower case g has to represent grams which is smaller than milligrams. 35 grams is 35,000 milligrams. Just like 45 grams or g is 45,000 milligrams. If 4,700 milligrams of potassium is daily recommended and I drink Gatorade that contains 45 grams of potassium, then milligram wise that’s 45,000 mg. I’m getting beyond my daily intake which is probably the refuel Gatorade is designed for.
I hope no one is confused about this if they are doing keto. Those are both way too sweet even not on keto. iWhat I want to know though is about the Gatorade and other sports drinks that are sugar free. Are they good for keto? Will they spike sugar levels?
Need to do power aid zero vs Gatorade zero which a lot of people on keto consume. No one one keto drink the regular versions.

@@ruig8612 Some humans are made to drink milk during adulthood. Proof for that is that many people with European ancestry are able to digest lactose during adulthood.
Pepe really some people are made to drink milk? Why not human milk? Why does an adult still need a tit to suck on?
"Actually, they are both worst." 🤗 Great review Doc!
Was confused when you spoke of “mg” for the potassium and sodium but your digital graphic has a gram symbol “g” displayed.
What digital graphic? The label? All labels have sugars and carbs in grams. Minerals are shown in milligrams.
Dr Berg speaks of 35 and 45 mg on his screen/board for potassium, but it shows grams on the board. 🤷🏻♂️
I always wondered why someone would think sugar water was a sports drink.
That’s what hydrates you in nature coconut water is sugar water as well
Husband finally gave up Powerade after having his first Heart Attack!!! I warned him
Now,. he has been on Keto, IF and things are good . Thanks to Dr. Berg.
MSG is not starch of any kind. It’s MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE. Completely different thing. And yes it is flavour enhancer
I prefer Powerade over Gatorade because it just taste better and that the only reason why I buy it
I don't know when, but dextrose is added to so many types of processed meat now a days.
Even what was Keto friendly artisan dried sausages, the type used for tapas, contains dextrose.
Even bacon! I searched through 22 types at a store, all had dextrose!
So what is a good alternative? Could you share a link with us?
I will, if you use me as a reference
I know it is bad for you but why NFL NBA NHL, etc, players and many professional athletes drink those stuffs (Gatorade most of the time)? It may gives people a wrong concepts of superstars drinking it, it got to have something good about it, more energy, more vitality, etc.
L L i’ve tought about this too, even their coaches give them those drinks
I worked in the sun for 9 hours yesterday and I drank 4 16 ounce gatorades and I felt better
I knew the conclusion once I saw that it was Dr. Berg doing this video. I was 100% right.
"the answer is NEITHER"
Gatorade has dextrose, not Powerade.
Except that you have them flipped…….Powerade uses HFCS, Gatorade uses sucrose.
SO...WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND??? NOT ONE OF THESE!
Peace and blessings what kind of trace minerals do you add to it
I like fruit punch flavor and lt tastes great at room temp. No ice
Nobody that's following you, are drinking the sugar version of these products.... what about Powerade Zero and Gatorade zero
They still contain aborted fetuses as "natural sweeteners". Mmmmm...
Still going to have artifical sweetener shite in it.
Ummm.. why are the Gatorade and powerade ingredients mixed up?? I have both in front of me..
What do you recommend for a recreational marathon runner, for a typical 5 km - 20 km training run? A water + lemon juiced by oneself? Does that cover the need for electrolytes? Thank you so much for answering!
What’s a good substitute for this then? Love Gatorade during game days. Helps me preform better. How about Gatorade zero?
Is Zevia drink OK to drink? It contains carbonated water, citric acid, Stevia left extract, and natural flavors.
I’d love to see a video like this but with energy drinks.
I hope no one is confused about this if they are doing keto. Those are both way too sweet even not on keto. iWhat I want to know though is about the Gatorade and other sports drinks that are sugar free. Are they good for keto? Will they spike sugar levels?
Dr. Berg can you also give your input on the new hydration drink PRIME-yes or no or just another sugary drink??
You are mistaken. High fructose corn syrup has a higher fructose percentage and lower glucose percentage.
And Thank You So Much For Telling😄
What can I use to replace? Any recipes for homemade sport drinks
I think it is for pro athletic people who are already in good shape physically and metabolically and not for people who want to lose weight.
Gatorade ZERO??? Yay or nay for intermittent fasting?
What about Powerade Zero? Thats what a lot of keto people plug on youtube.
