Yikes!! This is exactly the reason I'm very hesitant to recommend Airbnb. You guys handled it like pros but I'd be worried that less experienced travelers might have a tough time with a situation like this.
It’s so fun to watch a video from you guys in my home town. It makes me realize how authentic the places you visit are portrayed in you videos. I’m watching reruns because I am missing all your current travel videos that have been on hold during this mess. Can’t wait to see you back on the road.
Well, that's just awful! Thank goodness you had the option to go back to the hotel. Make sure you put lots of layers on and watch the temps. You can get frostbite so quickly! Good luck for the rest of Alaska!
Lived there for 30yrs. Always fun to watch travelers experience it for the first time. My gosh I recognized every thing in this vid. Every place. I lived there way too long LOL. Hope you come back in summer though, far better.
This may sound odd, but thank you for posting about your miserable travel experiences when they happen. It makes the journey that much more real. I was pretty worried for you sitting in that car as the Alaska night fell with no place to go. --P.S., hey it seems like the previous video is missing from your channel? The one with the flight to Alaska and breaking your camera lens. Or maybe I dreamed it...
That was a tough situation. I had one once in Toronto where the host was like 2 hours late and spoke no English (when the listing obviously stated English spoken). We ended up with a completely different room than we booked and the bathroom was in serious disarray. I've been more careful since. I'm glad you two are so savvy!
Thanks for the post you guys! I’m an old time Alaskan, currently trapped in Texas, and your video brought back soooo many memories of 4th Avenue and Fur Rondy and the sled dog races. Great, now I’m homesick! Eagerly awaiting more!
So happy to give you a taste of home! :D We had an absolutely amazing time in Alaska, and can't wait to post the rest of the vlogs! Although I think we prefer the weather in Texas a bit more than the winter weather up there 😂❄️
We had 2 airbnb hosts canceled on us a week before our trips to Tokyo and Hong Kong. 2 out of 3 bookings for us didn't pan out. I guess you guys are pretty lucky to happen to you only this one time. Stay safe!
Wow, Alaska is one place you do not want to be stuck without accomodation for the night. I had to laugh at Allison drinking iced coffee in that cold climate, I would be drinking gallons of hot coffee there :-)
Here in Fairbanks it isn't uncommon to see locals eating ice cream or drinking iced drinks, while its -10 to -20. Sometimes you just want something cold, even if its already cold outside.
Yep, had a pretty unfortunate time with an AirBnb in New York a couple years ago and not used them since. I'm much more willing to spend that little bit more for a hotel where I know it's all safe and secure - plus you can get breakfast made for you!
I kind of hate it. I've had a booking cancelled for no reason. I feel it had to do with being a single young male traveler. I wouldn't suggest it for other male solo travelers under 35. We have a bad reputation from a minority of us. It is sometimes the economical choice, like in the Miami area, but I can get whole apartments for cheaper in some places booked elsewhere.
Stephen Hitchens Even when it "works", there is the inconvenience of having to meet your host at a specific time with limited flexibility. So it's not like you can just roll up to a hotel no matter how late your flight is. I'm too nervous to book an Airbnb for the day I fly in case of delays etc. Also, there are some that require you to pick up your key at a different location than the lodging, which is not an easy task if you are traveling with luggage.
My Uncle was stationed in Alaska (one of my cousins was born in Alaska) and he had to get a heater for the engine to keep it from freezing. This was in the 1960's.
Anchorage looks really cool, and I love the drone shots. Seeing all of that snow makes me want to go snowshoeing! I'm sorry that this happened to you guys. I've never used Airbnb because we usually use VRBO to rent houses and condos. Excited to see the next video!
boy you are brave to go to Alaska in March, it might even be Feb. if the videos are a couple of weeks back. yes, we never got resolved in the Paris Airbnb debacle. Sorry you were so inconvenienced especially with it being so cold . Can't wait for the drive. This is a trip of a lifetime.
So excited you guys are in Alaska. We'll be there this summer, so it's fun to see what it all looks like in the winter. Looking forward to eating recommendations.
Oy. You poor things. I am soooo impressed by your wondetful attitudes. It is totally heatening to see how you brushed off the air b&b flub. Stuff happens. Looking forward to more Alaska!
Airbnb is always working very well for us and we're always last minute bookers, sometimes even just an hour upfront. Well, hope the rest of your time in Alaska well be perfect for you both.
Ya, we've never had a host be completely unresponsive... I think they'd accidentally turned instant book on and were out of town? We never really figured out what happened 😅 but we still have nothing but love for Airbnb! 👍
At least this happened on the US soil. My wife and I got kick out of the Airbnb apt. in Taiwan at midnight for reporting the host to the local Airbnb because the room/apt was not the same one in the posted picture. We were in the foreign country and did not speak the language so we did not have any choice but to pack our stuff and find a local hotel. We will never book another Airbnb apt. again.
Wow, it's minus 2c where I am in England right now, but it seems practically tropical compared to where you are. Great video as always. Stay safe adventurers!
Sorry about the AirB&B that just sucks. But I'm happy you guys are in Alaska that is my bucket list to go in the future, so I'm excited to see more cant wait :D
I don’t do last minute Airbnb for that reason . I do reservations months ahead so if the host cancel I have plan B hotel or hostel. Anyway have fun in Alaska 😊
Been wathcing you guys for about a year and now have been catching up on your older videos. When I saw the outside of your hotel, it looked so familiar, so I looked it up and realized it was the same place my parents and I stayed at one I was 12 years old and visiting my sister and her family who lived in Alaska. That hotel had not changed since the day when we stayed there many, many years ago. However, now it is being turned into low income housing.
Last we checked it was removed. I don't think Airbnb could get through either, so we're not sure what happened there. 😅 At least no one else will have the same issue with that room!
Sorry that happened to you. Airbnb has really been letting me down recently too! During a recent London trip, I had 3 different Airbnbs cancel on me last minute :(
Oh no! We're really hoping this isn't the start of a trend like that 😮 We've typically always had great experiences with Airbnb and still love using it! I guess we'll just be a little more thorough when we do last minute bookings 😕
I’m sure you were happy that you could plug n your car. Block heaters are vital to having a car that starts. I have pulled my car in when I went to school in NOrth Dakota. You crack me up will all the snow talk. That amount of snow and cold weather are normal here in the ND/MN/WI
Oh, no, we saw your last Airbnbs that looked amazing and now booked a lot of Airbnb for the upcoming weeks😀 I guess we can just hope that this won't happen🙈
We booked with airbnb and had a major issue with no one could get there story straight, and the costumer service rep called me a lier. We got there in the end and the person who owned the condo was great, it was just the company
Booked an Airbnb in LA that was not as offered and spent 5 hours trying to figure it out for them to tell us that they would not help us. When we got into the sketch place the door to a main road was smashed as if someone tried to break in. They told us that because there are bars on the door with the smashed glass that we were still safe. I get that ya’ll use their service and yes 90% of the hosts are great but the customer service we got from them when disappointed was horrible.
Should mention there were sketched out druggies shooting up outside said door on the Main Street. They didn’t care. I use them and I run a business where we clean Airbnb vacation homes but they were relentless. Horrible horrible experience.
Ouch! I work for another accommodation website I won't name, but you should get relocated in a place of similar or higher standard without extra cost :/ those things happen unfortunately, but you should at least get proper support from the website you booked through. If that hotel room was more expensive than the airbnb, you should claim the extra charges.
Pretty sure that most people who are living in vans are _"choosing"_ to live in vans because rents have become unaffordable in most places. People don't voluntarily go without bathrooms and kitchens. Necessity and choice are two different things.
Yeah whilst there is people choosing to live in vans for financial reasons. Some do it for the freedom of allows you. Go where you want when you want. It's raining where you are. Go where it's sunny etc. You don't need to go without the mod cons these days. You can have your shower and toilet. Lots have solar power and live off grid. Maybe if they ever do a massive tour of America or Europe. They can use a van, vans are very well catered for in Europe with places to empty your waste and fill your water tanks. There's even outdoor washing machines you can use. i May do it myself one day
Sorry to hear about your AirB'n'B misfortune. You dealt with that situation very well. I know you've had some great accommodation in Europe, but personally I would never use AirB'nB, nor Uber and the like. I do hope your fortunes improve. Oh, and it's World Happiness Day today... 😢😖😥
It's hard to travel with all of our winter gear, especially when we started in much warmer climates. We knew we'd be running to the store to get supplies when we got there, so we just made due the first day. And don't worry, we didn't lose anything to frostbite this trip ❄️😂
@@troyottosen8722 Funny "Summer" with all of that snow lying around. She also talks about dog sled races too. Summer must be a riot ! I take your comment as a rimshot that was almost an airball.

I want to know the name of the hotel at the end so that I can avoid it when I visit. I can't find anything with the word "bear" in it. 🤔

Stay strong both of you, things happened for a good reason. For sure for sure you will get some good news or some thing to make u happy.
You need to go back to Alaska in the summer! Go to the Kenai Peninsula. You won’t regret it!
Well, that's just awful! Thank goodness you had the option to go back to the hotel. Make sure you put lots of layers on and watch the temps. You can get frostbite so quickly! Good luck for the rest of Alaska!
Thanks so much, Susan! We made sure to wear plenty of layers after that day - and those hand warmers were our best friends 😂
Lived there for 30yrs. Always fun to watch travelers experience it for the first time. My gosh I recognized every thing in this vid. Every place. I lived there way too long LOL. Hope you come back in summer though, far better.
Absolutely disgusted the way Air bnb treated you. Stay safe guys!

Wow, what an experince that was and we only saw a little. Glad you found a warm place.
Ya it was a pretty goofy way to start the trip. But don't worry, the rest of our time in Alaska ended up being pretty amazing 🙌

You can't blame AIRB for tardy hosts, but their customer service looks like it sucks. I've always used Trip Advisor and to date never had a problem.
they are the fortune-cookie providers of short-term accommodation. You have to read between the sense of panic & cryptic remarks
Love the Walmart swagger!
You should have used the old, "Do you know who I am?" routine. Come back to Edinburgh.
How many days did you guys stay? An extra $15 a day for an SUV with 4x4 wouldve been soooo worth it
