If you have an iced up coil on a freezer with a dixell control Hold set and down button for 3 sec till it flashes HY then press the Down bottom a few times till you see P2, press the set button and it will display the temperature the evap sensor is reading, when the probe has failed (witch they do 9/10 times) it will be displaying a high temp. so for example you may have a -10 evap but the defrost sensor is reading 20 degrees now let’s say you have a 25 degree defrost temp cut out so in this case it will only defrost and heat the coil up 5 degrees until defrost termination in turn icing up your coil. I have had problem hundreds of times with freezers/freezer rooms here in Australia.
Great repair as usual Dave, I've had mixed results with those Dixell controllers. I'm honestly not a fan for the simple reason that I prefer a mechanical defrost clock that you can watch it move to verify that it is actually keeping time. I've also had the Dixell controllers start doing whatever they want too. Regardless keep the videos coming man, I've enjoyed them for a few years now!!
Bro, I'm going to send you some good ol fashion coonass rubber gloves. So many videos your gloves are torn. Lol, great video, it amazing how fast you diagnosed that unit. You are definitely the man!! South Louisiana needs people like you
Been watching your videos a few months now. I enjoy yours. I will be taking commercial refrigeration this fall after heat pumps this summer. Trying to learn some stuff because its different that the comfort cooling I have been doing. Anyway I thank you and please keep the explanations coming as you have time for during videos. Thanks!
Great vid Dave. Just went through something like that at my work where they had a reachiin refrigerator that started to warm up. Same item,,,iced coil. So bad, just unplug an let sit for hour an half with door propped open. Big ice block fell off the front of coil and pulled the cover off to get ice out than have a rain shower for two hours later when they get crazy and put product back in. Suspect they keep leaving the door cracked open. Back on and pulled down quickly.
Good video Dave, I just wish you could have shown us the automatic ice bagger mechanism cause I’ve never seen one of those units before, next time you service it poke your camera inside there for me please?...😁 I like your longer videos like this too where you go a little bit more in depth into your thinking with diagnostics. Thanks!
heavydiesel I’ve seen that happen. When I checked the manual defrost it was in EL. I also informed the customer that the controller could be faulty. You ever get rid of those and just go back with a mechanical timer and tstat?
I carry about four different types of controller and various sensors on the truck so its usually easiest to put an equivalent one on. Everything here has been digital since I started work in the early 90's so it would probably take a few days for the wholesalers to order in mechanical stats etc and take me ages to figure out how to wire them! haha
Out here everything is getting pretty much digital just now. There is a Mix of digital & Mechanical out here still. Starting to see a lot of digital Now.
Dave , I noticed your UEI meter was a little dirty ... I may have to turn you in to the meter inspector ... Other than that , very good vid ... lol ...
Any other tips for checking compressors on small cap tube systems besides seeing if it can briefly pull down into a vacuum? Getting a compression ratio based on operating pressures? As always thanks for all that you show and share.
So it was the thermistor popping out of the evaporator and possibly overfilling the bin that froze the coil? Nice thorough service call there Guru! This video was very educational in term of troubleshooting and diagnosis.
yes indeed...side show bob what have you done ! 😠 so what was the outcome of it? did you check the doors & gaskets to make sure they are closing & sealing ?
kingofthecrease30 I did the doors and gaskets are good. Either the evap probe piped out, or the controll or they over filled the unit blocking the air flow.
Hi Dave. Great video. At around the 3:31 mark you mention checking terminals 8 and 9 to see if the relay contacts are stuck together. Do you find that they are often stuck, or is that check just part of good problem solving?
Hey guys got an old wood two door beer cooler with two 2000 but evaps just started flooding back to the compressor. Checked txv s they seem fine I'm lost on this one any suggestions would be appreciated Artic Air ref.
How long has it been you had that dl429 , gonna be my next clamp meter you recommended and convinced me, it has lots of great features, have to get used to it from my 3 fieldpieces level up 😊
nate Belden the DL429 meter is a great bang for the buck. I’ve had UEi meters since 2002 there great. I have not tried there wireless gauges. I am using Fieldpiece probes there range is great there app is improving.
The Bible... Dick Wirz's, Commercial Refrigeration for AC Techs. Check out the first two chapters on a free preview in Google books then buy whatever edition, new or used you can afford.
Good vid. Very well explained. You outdid yourself on this one. Even a link to leer. 👍😎And it's iBooks savable. Very nice ! Congrats on 7,000 subs !! Woo hoo !!
Good video sharing thorough diagnostics on the defrost and controller. I also would like to see the bagging sequence. Thanks dave.

First thing I check when I see the coil a block of ice!!

The company I've work for has been training to bypass the digital and mechanical timed defrost timers.

Thanks jessie
That’s why I’m here! Trying to level up
Bear Downs your level is up ⚡️⚡️⚡️
Great info Dave!! Always appreciate your tips!!
Daniel Lind thanks for watching
Thanks for the info. I liked the scientific explanation so now I have become a super tech.😂😂😂

Ice, Ice baby. Neat piece of equipment there Dave, thanks for sharing that one with us. Gotta love the hackery that you run across on service calls, 😂
Thank you for your video, you’ve helped me out a while man considering I’m still a rookie barely going on two months on this refrigeration company.
Great video Dave, I’m binge watching your 2018 season, I’m sensing Championship!!
Thank you Chris
Nice video, and especially before work. Getting pumped up & focused .

Your Right Dave They Do That Shit now days
Suuuuuuuper tech, level up 😂
Good one Dave, had it from the get go. Now it even sounds smooth. Haha
Great video Dave...could you do a video outlining the Dixel controller like you did for the A421ABD? Cheers
Stuart Turner that’s a good idea 👍 there are refer models and freezer models.
Another great vid next level 😊👍👍👍
Next level up 😎👍
Great video thank you
Another great video and job Dave 👍👍👍
Harry Dickson thanks Harry
Wow, bypass service switch.Ohm's Law class, Dave class there will be a test!
Michael Lee test at noon lol
Had one where the controller reset itself for hot gas defrost when it should have been electric, second time it did it I put new controller on.

I’ve seen the stick together to many times. Due to amp draw from compressor.
Hey guys got an old wood two door beer cooler with two 2000 but evaps just started flooding back to the compressor. Checked txv s they seem fine I'm lost on this one any suggestions would be appreciated Artic Air ref.

Gene K I’m thinking 2 years now.
Is there a reason you like uei meters lots of guys say field piece, and have you tried the uei hub6 or the Refrideration wireless gauges uei has
nate Belden the DL429 meter is a great bang for the buck. I’ve had UEi meters since 2002 there great. I have not tried there wireless gauges. I am using Fieldpiece probes there range is great there app is improving.
I don't care for them Dixell controllers much.
bblazeff1 me either. But it’s where we are at now.
Prefer them over Carel
Thanks Dave, i havent ran into a double cap tube yet, did it feed 2 evaporator? please educate me newbie
APR928 it’s one evap with two circuits.
Run cap bandits my bruthu i see i everywhere saddddddd!!!!!!!!
What books would you recommend for an ac tech wanting to break into refrigeration
The Bible... Dick Wirz's, Commercial Refrigeration for AC Techs. Check out the first two chapters on a free preview in Google books then buy whatever edition, new or used you can afford.
Any issues and thoughts on this clamp meter Dave please share thanks
Gene K best bang for the buck 2 years no issues
What is your time frame, start to finish on this call? Great video!
Ray Trent cant remember but melting ice the way I did took some time.
Hey Dave, can you run a 5 door glass and a 8 door glass reach in to one condenser???? Curious
Iceatosis
